D-Link DIR-655 :: ITunes Killing Bandwidth How To Control It
Apr 5, 2011
This has finally become a BIG problem. Any time I have iTunes running and downloading podcasts, it hogs all the bandwidth for the Internet (but not the local network). This is not only slowing down access from the machine running iTunes and the downloads but for every other device trying to web browse.I'm running two Macs and one Windows/Dell PC on the network. All are hard-wired (Ethernet) to the DIR-655. How to throttle iTunes? I did some research and found that I am apparently not the only one having this issue.I'm about to bail on iTunes entirely and try to get used to Miro, which does allow bandwidth control.

After lot of troubleshooting and efforts I figured out there seems to be BUG with routers firmware 0.6.0 1.1 v0005.0 Build 120926 Rel.27100n.When you enable Bandwidth control, FTP stops working from Internet. However, it does work from local network. When you disable Bandwidth control, FTP starts working from internet as well as local network.

Looking at the manual for this router in regards to bandwidth restrictions. When you set up the Rules under Bandwidth Control does this setting shared by the IP range or does each IP in the range get that amount of bandwidth?

I have a router with 2 service providers connectivity with different ASN and running with BGP.I've announce few IP-prefix by ISP-A and Few Prefix by ISP-B.Both are working well with redundancy. But,Problem is here, that the all uplink bandwidth goes through ISP-A link.I want to make it that, ISP-A routed ip-Prefix's upload data will go through ISP-A & ISP-B IP-Prefix's Upload data will go through ISP-B Link.

Also, a utorrent monitoring app cannot connect to my computer, which is set up right at my computers end, but won't connect at all from my phone over wi-fi.

PC: Win 7 x86
iTunes: 10.6
Router: DIR-655 (Firmware Version: B1, 2.06)
My new iPad cannot connect to iTunes for either home sharing or Wi-Fi Sync.I have check the windows event log and provides the following error lists....
444: ERROR: read_msg errno 0 (The operation completed successfully.)ERROR: mDNSPlatformReadTCP - recv: 10053..The following ports have been set up in Router Port Forwarding/Virtual Servers
-TCP: 3689
-UDP: 5353
I have disabled DMZ and enabled Multi Stream Cast, but it seems no use on the problem solving. The same errors are still provided. iPad cannot in the device list if it is in Wi-Fi connection, no home sharing. As I am not in US, the local supplier latest firmware version is 2.06NA Beta1

We have 3 sets of applications. The first does not require much bandwidth but is very critical, the other two is more bandwidth consuming but less critical. I would like to know if it's possible to reflect this priorities on the router configuration. Is it possible to set the ports 10000, 10001 and 10002 of the external IP have higher priority to be handled, for example? Also, is it possible to limit the bandwidth that goes through a set of ports?
I must prevent the 2 sets of less critical applications to strugle the critical ones. What router can provide this capabilities? Is the 1921 able to do this job?

If you can't home share on iTunes between Computers or AppleTV, try turning multicast on
1) login to router
2) Go to Advanced tab
3) Select Advanced Networking on Left hand column
4) Select checkbox to enable multicast streams
5) Save the changes
In order to get all my machines working, I also had to enable multicast streams on my network extender as well. The IP address for the network extender is 192.168.0.50 or type in DLINKAP in the URL bar and follow the relevant instructions for your model number.
Please note if you use a software firewall on your PC or Mac, you may need to also free up TCP port 3689 and UDP port 5353. However there are plenty of support articles at Apple / Norton / Microsoft / etc... on how to do this for your relevant firewall..

We are about to share a 10 MBit ISP connection with 2 others companies, and they are going to split the bill up into 3,3 and 4 Mbit, so we where thinking that we could setup a switch before their and ours router and provide them with a static IP from our ISP. But is it possible to set a bandwidth limit on the ports of a Cisco Catalyst 2960-8TC, so that we can set a limit of 3,3 and 4 on 3 ports.

I have been using a linksys 5 port workgroup switch in my room. I have the ethernet cable coming from the router into the uplink port and my PS3, xbox, dvr, and pc in the other ports. It has been working fine until today I started messing around the the cables. I had trouble with the ps3 connecting to the internet so I used my laptop with wifi disabled to test out a few of the cables and ports. Now all of a sudden the switch kills the internet connection. If I remove the cable running to my room from the main router, the other PCs and wireless will connect, but as soon I plug myself up it goes dead. I now have the ethernet cable in my room hooked directly to the PC bypassing the switch and everything works fine now.

I have 16 customers using RV042 router all 11 have the RV042 router different ISP's. After eleminating every thing else we were down to the routers. Two of the customers we built linux boxes to do the routing and firewalling and VPN, etc. Once in place the problems went away. Which confirmed it was the RV042 router causing the problem.
We watched the traffic and after about 2 hrs the router tells both ends to reset. End of communication.
My question is how do we stop the router from terminiating the connections. They are not bandwith hogs. They are nessessary connect connections.

I have tried to setup access control by setting up a policy that restricts certain MAC addresses during a period during the day from certain websites. I set up the website filter and a schedule and selected them for the policy. Instead of blocking just the websites on the filter list during the time setup in the schedule, it blocks all websites all the time.I made sure that I setup the policy to 'block some access' NOT 'block all access'.The only thing that seems to work is that only the computers with the MAC address selected are effected.

I may be doing it incorrectly, but I'm trying to configure web access rules. I first set up access control and tell it to use the website filter. I've tried configuring it by both MAC address and IP address (separately, not simultaneously), but it still allows the listed sites in the web filter to get through. Is there something else I need to block or am I not doing something correctly? The network is on DHCP reservation, so IP addresses are always the same. MAC addresses, as I mentioned, don't work, either and they are fixed and logged in the router.

DIR655 with 1.33NA firmware. I'm trying to determine how to block access to the internet for a specific LAN computer when the user knows how to change a MAC address. I don't want to turn MAC control on and grant only to listed computers - the list doesn't accommodate enough MAC addresses, and the client has wireless and wired since it's a laptop. I also don't want to set static IPs on all of the devices since some cannot accommodate that feature.I'm thinking that reserving an IP address isn't ultimately the solution either, since assigning the IP isn't going to work if the MAC changes. how to use access control under these circumstances?

For our children, we use the parental control feature of the DIR-615 (RevD, FW4.11b15), which works excellently. I use the whitelist feature, so only trusted web sites can be accessed. Unfortunately the DIR-615 only has 10 entries in that list and I will soon need more. So I wonder if there is another D-Link router that offers a bigger list with maybe 50 or even 100 entries?

When attempting to configure access controls from the advanced menu I enable the access control checkbox. I then follow the configuration wizard completing each step as directed by the wizard. When I complete the wizard and try to save the rule I get the following error message regardless of how I complete the wizard. "Name can not be empty string". Yes, cannot is misspelled in the message. I have tried every combination of choices in the wizard and many combinations of naming the rule to no avail.
This did work properly on a previous firmware version, probably 1.04 or 1.05. I have not tried back loading to the previous versions to see where it did or did not work. I don't know how well the router goes back and don't really care to reload all the settings again by hand if the automatic recovery doesn't work.I want to use this feature to control what hours certain machines on the network have access to the internet.

I'm trying to block internet access to a range of IP addresses using the Access Control function of the DIR-655 router. Unfortunately, the router does not allow me to block a range of IPs. Instead, I can only create policies based upon individual IPs or MAC addresses. I have over 60 machines I want to block Internet access and I'd hate to have to type them in individually. How do I go about blocking all Internet access (HTTP/FTP/email/everything) for a range of IP addresses? They will have to be able to continue to use the internal LAN.
