Installing Second Wireless Network Separate From DSL?

Feb 2, 2013

I have a DSL modem with wireless networking, and I am trying to install a second wireless router for a separate network. The standalone wireless network has five laptops networked to a sixth laptop, in a server/client setup. To complicate things, I am plugging the server laptop into a LAN connection on the DSL modem. The server shows both the LAN connection with internet access, and the second wireless network without internet access. The client laptops just show the wireless network, without internet access.

This is exactly what I need - internet access for the server but no access for the five clients. I have each wireless router on a separate channel and only auto connect to the standalone wireless network. Is there anything I need to do to the setup of either of the routers to avoid problems?? The wireless network without internet access seems to be abnormally slow in response and I am wondering if there is any interference between networks. None of the laptops are accessing the DSL wireless network, but I still need that DSL wireless capability for other computers in the building.

Access Internet Using Wireless Network And Printer Using Separate Wired Network At Time?

Apr 4, 2012

I have 4 computers (3 laptops, 1 desktop) in a shared office. We get internet access using their wireless network. All works fine. However, I need to share a printer amongst all of the computers. The printer is LAN enabled and I would normally just put all the PCs on a hub, together with the printer and share it that way. BUT my question is can we access the internet using the wireless network and the printer using a separate wired network at the same time?

AR5005GS - Wireless Network Card Not Detected After Installing New Hardware

Nov 27, 2012

My wireless network card is not detected by the system and wont show up in device manager. the green light on the back of the card is still blinking, so it is getting power through the mobo. Wireless network card was working perfectly before swapping out my video card for a new 7850 and swapping out my RAM modules. The drivers are Up to date. I'm running windows 7 and the wireless network card is an atheros AR5005GS.

I don't understand why installing new RAM and a new video card would affect this?? I didn't touch that card, and have double checked it is still seated properly.

I have no other way currently to connect this computer to the Internet.

- interrupt sharing?

Separate Port 4 Into Separate Vlan?

Jan 16, 2013

My fiance recently signed up for the Screen-wise Panel for Google research. Basically they monitor your TV usage and your internet usage. As part of the program they installed a Cisco WIFI router. I've got no issue with them logging the sites visited etc but I'm a little worried about them possible collecting private information (banking / work related stuff) that I don't want going out there. According to what I've read what's supposed to happen is they replace your router with the new Cisco router. The "technician" who came in and installed the router was actually a builder and not an IT technician and rather than replace our router he connected the Cisco router into port 4 of our router... I wasn't in at the time.

What I was looking to do is separate Port 4 of my router into a separate VLAN that can access the internet, but not access anything on ports 1-3, or the wireless. However, I want to be able to see everything on port 4 from the other side (in other words I want to see "into" the port 4 VLAN, but don't want them to see out). I also wanted DHCP to assign IP addresses correctly depending on where you were plugged in. In this example the first VLAN (your current router ip address) is going to be on 192.168.1.1, and the second VLAN (the new on we create on port 4) is going to be on 192.168.2.1.This is exactly what I'm looking to do, I could then connect the kids machines / tablets / ipods to the Cisco router and have the main machine and my work laptop on the main router... but I don't have a clue how to do it. </quote> Is this something that I am able to do with the Netgear router I own and is it hard to set up?

Group B: PC 4, PC 5, PC 6 (can see each other and share files within this group)

But Group A & B can not see each other and are blocked from accessing each other. Can this be done with the DIR 655 or do I need to upgrade? Also, these two groups will be sharing the same internet connection.

Routers / Switches :: Setting Up A Network With Separate Subgroups

Jun 13, 2012

I have a 4-port Netgear modem/router (DG834), and need to distribute its Internet connection according to the following criteria:

1.There are 11 access points (3 wired, 8 wireless) across 4 floors of a building - all cabling is from a central point, which will connect through a switch.Cat 5e cabling is in place.
2.The wireless points need Power over Ethernet connections
3.The 4 router ports serve 2 PC's and a printer in an office, the fourth being the connection to the switch.
4.There must be network separation so that:
- all points have Internet access
- there are three separate groups - one for the office, one for staff (wired) and one for guests (the wireless points), the purpose being to ensure that no user in one group can access any user's device in the other 2 groups. I'm assuming VLAN is the method for this.
5.Traffic on the network is likely to be fairly low casual use of the wireless ports, the office PC's only being used for Internet access and email no transactional systems, large databases or other resource / network-intensive functions.

1.Both the Netgear FS726TP and GS724TP look as if they will do what I want, using WNAP210 wireless access points. Could I achieve the same outcome with 2 x GS108PE switches? Any other hardware recommendations?
2.Do I need any additional hardware?
3.Are there any other considerations I have not thought of?

Sharing :: Creating Separate Work-group On One Network?

Feb 1, 2011

I'm in a house on a network that has 2 Macbooks, 4 notebooks running either Windows Vista or Windows 7, and 3 desktops running either Windows Vista or Windows XP. (Sidenote: No, they're not all accessing the network at the same time; actually some of them are hardly ever even turned on but it's important to include them because of the questions to follow.) Out of all those machines, one desktop running XP and one notebook running Vista are mine. Now, my family's pretty private, so we have file sharing turned off on all the computers. The problem is it's really a pain to have to transfer files between my laptop and my desktop, which I do fairly often because some of my schoolwork is done on the desktop (bigger screen), while some is done on my laptop (portability), and I also have a partition on the desktop's hard drive specifically for backing up files. When I want to transfer files, whether it's one file or 10,000 files (which I had to do the other day, actually), I either have to:

a) e-mail the file to myself if it's not too large and open it on the other machine

b)use my flash drive to transfer files

c) use a usb transfer cable, start the software, log in to the connection, etc etc.

simply create a new Workgroup on the network with just my 2 machines in it, so I can put all the files I want to share/move between them on the network instead of manually transferring them. I've already taken care of that step (creating the Workgroup, that is), so for the sake of not being confusing, I'll call my network "Network" and my workgroup "Mygroup" and whatever workgroups the other computers might be in "Theirgroups". Now that I've figured out that it's possible for Mygroup and Theirgroups to co-exist on Network, what about the actual file sharing? If I set up file sharing will only the 2 computers in Mygroup have access to them, or will the computers in Theirgroups have access as well since we're all on the same network? If the computers on Theirgroups will have access as well, is there any way I can make it so that only Mygroup will have access?

Cisco :: WS-C2950-24 Separate Guest Clients From Domain On Network?

Jun 8, 2012

I am playing around with a WS-C2950-24 running IOS 12.1(22)EA13. I would like to separate guest clients from domain clients on the network (for a start) so that guest clients only get access to internet and i have created three vlans for this purpose. Vlan 10 - internet, vlan 20 - internal, vlan 40 - guest. I have also set up a trunk link on the internal network.since the 2950 does not offer routing capabilities i assume i need to to the routing between these networks on another box. I am planing to do this on a linux machine. I have set up the same vlans on the linux box.

My question is how do I configure the cisco correctly so i can reach all the networks on the linux box. The cable that runs between the cisco and the linux box is connected to vlan 20 - internal and is defined as a trunk port allowing all vlans ( switchport trunk allowed vlan all ) with vlan 20 as native.it looks like only vlan 20 is using the cable that reaches the linux machine. 2950 ----- unmanaged switch (not replaced yet) ---servers

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 1800 - How To Use Gateway On Separate Network

Sep 30, 2012

I've just started out playing with a Cisco 1800 router to gain some knowledge of Cisco devices before taking a CCNA. I also have a 2950 switch but will start with the router.

I'm using an Android phone as a wireless Internet access point.  This issues IP addresses by DHCP in the 192.168.43.x range with 255.255.255.0 subnet.

Also I have a Linksys WRT54G router running DD-WRT firmware acting as a wireless bridge to the Android phone, and it has 4 LAN ports.

This bridge is up and running and I have successfully connected my laptop to the Linksys for testing and can use the Internet provided by the phone.

Connected to the Linksys is a Cisco 1800 router. Connected to the router is my Citrix XenServer PC and a NAS box.

The XenServer and NAS are on another network 07.05.19.x range with 255.0.0.0 subnet using their own static IPs. One of the virtual clients on the XenServer will be a DHCP server to service other virtual clients.  All still in the 07.05.19.x range.

Basically I want the devices on the 07.05.19.x IP range to be able to use the Internet gateway at 192.168.43.1 to access the Internet.

How would I set up my 1800 to achieve this?

Also, am I right in understanding that the 1800 will ignore DHCP leases from the Android phone due to it being a Layer 3 device.

Networking :: Second Separate Network Using Single ISP Provided Address D-Link DI-624

Nov 25, 2011

I have a standard home network consisting of internet access provided by my cable company which is then disseminated to a variety of wired and wireless devices via a router.

I would like to create a second wireless network that is separate from my current one. This new wireless network would have extra access controls including access restrictions to some web sites using both IP address restrictions and using the OpenDNS DNS servers.

The picture below illustrates the current configuration. The question is: how can I connect ROUTER B to the internet using my current equipment (without buying another IP address from the cable company)?

W
MODEM --> ROUTER A --> ANTENNA <------> COMP 3
1 2 3 4
| |
| |
COMP 1 <---' | W
| ?? <--> ROUTER B --> ANTENNA <---> COMP 4
COMP 2 <-----' 1 2 3 4

W = WAN port

So, in the above picture, COMP 4 is connected via wireless to this second network and cannot access anything on the first network and uses different different DNS servers.

In case it matters, ROUTER A is a Linksys WRT54GL while ROUTER B is a D-Link DI-624.

My questions are below.

1, We have a home hub supplied by the ISP which is configured by an IP address which is NOT static. Can we not use the ASA 5505 instead. I know that if our ISP change the IP address we have to change the IP address on the 5505.

2, Will we be able to use the home network broadband to create a secure connection?

Cisco Firewall :: 6500 Separate Internal Server / HQ Network From 3 / 4 Different External Connections

May 21, 2012

I am using a 6500 with FWSM. I need to separate an internal server/HQ network from 3 or 4 different external connections. The external networks do not necessarily need to be isolated from each other.I have the option of using a 3 layer model: L2 Access layer to SVIs on the Distribution layer and then L3 to the 6500.L2 Access, connecting directly to the 6500s, with the SVIs on the FWSM.Is it better to have the FWSM outside the MSFC or Inside? Am i correct in thinking that "inside" vs "outside" is determined by whether the SVI's are configured on the FWSM or the MSFC? is there any performance impact from having the FWSM doing the routing instead of the MSFC.If the vlans are all configured on the FWSM, what is the 6500 doing, other than providing switch ports?

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 5510 Isolating Switch Ports For A Separate Network

Feb 2, 2012

I have to configure failover Active/Standby on my ASA 5510.I am wondering how i could do for the outside interface, i mean, actually the ASA1 outside interface is linked directly to our Internet router. So now if i have to add ASA2 connecting to that router i will need a switch between them.I have already a switch for DMZ & LAN.The thing is that i will have to allow 3 switchs ports to communicate with each others.

- 1 for ASA1--outside
- 1 for ASA2--outside
- 1 for Internet router

How could i isolate these 3 ports to make them communicate alone ? Should i use VLAN for that ?And if i use VLAN, will this require to make any change of configuration on my firewalls (ASA1 & ASA2) outside interface ?I am a bit lost with this, if i am correct i will not have to do some "vlan tagging" on the firewall itself ?
