Linksys Wireless Router :: How To Cascade WRT54G For Guest AP Purposes
Oct 24, 2011
Summary: Want to use a WRT54G cascaded behind existing DI-604 router to offer free wi-fi to guests. Need to keep guests on a separate subnet, and make sure their traffic is never routed to currently existing one (office PCs).

Tried above settings, with DHCP enabled for the new guest subnet. Using normal Gateway mode (i.e. re-NATting). Wireless guests can access the Internet, but also 192.168.0.x machines. Also tried, as suggested on several docs, disconnecting the WRT from the main network, resetting to factory defaults and setting up router from scratch, with the same result. It seems reasonable that, by default, things are set up in such a way that the new subnet can share resources with the existing one; however, I need the contrary and can't seem to get it right.BTW, as soon as I enter the static IP and default gateway for the WAN interface I see new default entries appearing on the static route table (Adv Routing / Show Table) for 10.x.x.x to 192.168.0.x routing. I suppose that this is necessary for the router itself, as a member of both, to be able to perform NAT and gateway through the upper tier -- since I can't seem to delete these entries manually, anyway.Considered using Router mode, but if I understand correctly, that would disable NAT, which seems (to me) inconsistent with the "separate subnet" requirement, since the main router would need to NAT guests as well as employee PCs (which would imply using one subnet for both, right?). Considered adding a firewall rule at the WRT, but the firmware does not seem to offer a suitable feature. There are "Filters", but those aim at restricting Internet access (which I want to allow), or to a certain range of ports, or even search keywords -- but not to a range of *hosts*.Tried filtering out guest-to-LAN traffic at the main router, but this proved nontrivial to get working (probably due to NAT-within-NAT which, other than that, works fine). It sounds a bit silly, anyway, I mean, why route this kind of traffic only to filter it out later on? I'd rather not route it at all in the first place. Can that be avoided? How?

I am trying to go from the Cable Modem to E4200 >> LAN >> WRT54G then Wifi with the same SSID as the E4200 in order to boost range.
E4200 is set at 192.168.1.1 WRT54G is set at 192.168.1.2 What LAN Port do I connect the LAN on the WRT54G?
So how do I configure the WRT54G for DHCP, SSID, Password.. I am using WPA for security.

I have a wrt54g router and would like to separate the WLAN clients from accessing computers and servers on the LAN... in other words I would like to make it a "guest" network. I've put the router in "router" mode instead of "gateway". I just want to be sure if that is the best thing I can do in terms of turning the wireless network into an isolated one.

I have a wrt160n as my main router cascading to an e1200 at the other end of my house. The idea was to enhance the wireless signal there. Went thru extended discussion with Cisco support settnig the system up.
Ip address of e1200 is set more than 5 apart from primary router, dhcp is disabled. The connection bewtween routers is Wan to Wan.
I have wired signal at the e1200 but no wireless signal?

I have an ASUS P5E3 Deluxe motherboard and am having minor connection issues. Occasionally it will have trouble connecting to the internet....IMO, the traffic gets stuck as it attempts to send requests through the non-internet connected line. Here's how I have it connected, running Windows XP: It has a Realtek ethernet jack which is LAN 1 on the Connections menu and that line is connected to the router for internet. Typical set-up that automatically assigns IP address and all other options. It also has a Marvell Yukon connection (LAN 2) that connects to the server so that I can use the networked printer. I've assigned an IP address within the range of the settings on that router. The printer works. Is there a way to direct all internet or web data through one card so that the connection doesn't get bogged down? The server has no internet connection so I don't want any internet requests to go through the Marvell Yukon ethernet jack.

The guest network on the router keeps going down. It can be seen but it cannot be connected to. Sometimes it works for a day or 2 and then it doesn't. I have to constantly babysit the network and it is entirely frustrating because the only fix is to reboot the router.I have tried factory resetting several times.I have tried re-flashing the fw.I'm using the non-CCC fw because CCC had way, way too many issues. These routers have been out for months and many people have been having issues and somehow Cisco doesn't see fit to work on firmware that stabilizes them at all? It's like, they release a router and then forget about it - the next batch comes along, often the same guts with a different shell and it's the same thing over again. I had a WRT610N and I said I'd never buy another Cisco after that but I broke my rule because of being lured by these "App enabled" features, which mind you have nothing at all over the competition since the CCC doesn't even work for most people.

I can connect to the guest account but it cannot resolve DNS addresses; how should the router be set up?
The regular (non-guest) account works as advertised. The E1200 is connected to my Verizon modem/router. I have tried disable/enable of DHCP on the E1200; I have tried setting the E1200 Static DNS 1 to my Verizon router IP address without success.

I have the wireless guest network up and running just fine. But, I need to also connect to the router's quest network via one of the ethernet ports. Can I just give the LAN-conencted PC a 192.168.3.x static IP to access the guest network? I am assuming there is no VLAN functionality...
And even better, can I set up a DHCP relationship to that port? So that any device plugged into the port will get a IP on that subnet?

Purchased E3200 and did simple setup via CD setup (Cisco connect). Set up main name and password. Cisco Connect assigned "-guest" to end of main name for the guest account. Gave guest account its own password. Both main and guest accounts were broadcasting OK -- but guest account was not secure and could be accessed without password. (All software and firmware upgrades were done during initial setup).Reset the E3200 and restarted things from the CD setup. Created main account, main account password, and guest password again. In advanced settings, left basic wireless settings at initial settings, changed wireless secutiy to WPA2 Personal. Still having the guest account being broadcast in unlocked status. (Have turned off guest access for now until I can get password protection for it).

My EA4500 has the newest firmware and is properly configured to support 20+ wireless and wired devices. It does this job well.Guest Access, however, is a problem. It works for about a day, then stops.Guests can access the login screen and enter the password. Then nothing happens. The screen appears to "load", but it does not connect.I have tried returning to default settings and reconfiguring and reupdating firmware. I have tried turning Guest Access on and off, as well as resetting the password. The only that works is rebooting the router. This is obviously not practical, especially for a contract client.

Just bought an E1500 wireless router -- when setting the router name and password, a 2nd guest sight came up, but I had to leave the computer, and when I came back that page was not there. I do have a guess password, that is fine---what I want to remove is the guest signal to our Dish Network wireless sight.

I cannot get the Guest Network feature to work.Even though Guest SSID is enabled, it does not show up on any devices attempting to connect. Manually connecting by entering the Guest SSID fails (not recognized). On devices with the primary 5 and 2.4 GHz configured they do see the third network but without SSID (unknown) and are also unable to connect to it manually using the SSID.I did not try this before 1.0.02. Have rebooted modem and verified all configs (multiple times). The network is live in an office and can't keep screwing with it or drastically changing its settings.

Do any of Linksys routers have the recently popular guest network access feature where you can create a password protected or no password secondary network that provides internet-only access to guests and prevents them from accessing your main network (computers, printers, HDDs etc?). Does Linksys's highest end WRT610N have a similar feature that works slightly differently but does the same thing?

I just installed my EA4500 router and it was amazingly simple. My only question is it shows two wireless connections available: The secured one I set up and the another network with the same name that says "guest" and is NOT secured. Is there a way to either disable the unsecured guest network or to secure the guest network?

I am running a guest network on my E4200V2. I have changed my DNS servers on the router to use OpenDNS for traffic filtering. The filtering on my non-guest networks is working fine; the OpenDNS test sites are blocked. However, when I use the guest network, the OpenDNS test sites are not blocked. There's obviously nowhere that I can change the DNS settings for the guest network.
I know that parental filtering in the router applies to the guest network, however, it seems that the DNS servers for the non-guest networks don't apply to the guest network. Is this true? Have others seen this?If so, that's pretty disappointing. OpenDNS filtering is much more powerful than the 8-URL blacklist I can create in the router admin. If I want to filter sites for my kids, having a guest network that is essentially wide-open (except for 8 URLs) is not an ideal situation.

I tried to extend the Range of the Guest WLAN of the E2000 with several different Access Points vom TP-Link. (Last try: TL-WA901D) The Access Point recognises the WLAN and sometimes it has a connection for a short time. But then the whole WLAN is breaking down, sometimes the Router E200 hangs up, also with the LAN connections. The E200 is connected to a sky-DSL Router and works fine when no additional access point is connected. In the web-Interface of the E2000 I cant setup any specific Guest-WLAN settings.

E2000 has the guest account feature. Not sure if all guests shares the same login credentials. I would like to have guests account use seperate logins. Is this feature available? Another thing, I read the manual and it is indicated that only up to 10 maximum guest acccounts is allowed. I am looking for more than 10 - kinda like a hotspot software.
I've been looking everywhere. I've seen hotspot system, ddwrt, chillspot, etc. But it's complicated as firmware needed to be flashed.
