Ubuntu 12.04 - How To Open Ports For Localhost On Linux

Jul 12, 2013

I've been reading for the past hour about opening ports on Ubuntu 12.04 and I can't seem to get anything to work. I'm running a program with an RPC server accepting local connections on localhost (127.0.0.1) which has allowed ip range 192.168.*.*

I've tried to edit the iptables to allow incoming connections, but curl still can't connect to the RPC server no matter what I do.

$ sudo iptables -A INPUT -i eth0 -p tcp --dport 18332 -j ACCEPT
$ nmap -v -sT localhost
Starting Nmap 5.21 ( http://nmap.org ) at 2013-07-13 05:54 UTC
Initiating Ping Scan at 05:54

WRTN310N / Linux - Allow Incoming Responses Apache / On Ubuntu 11.10 - Curl

Dec 9, 2012

I'm trying to get a Curl Response from an outside server, however I noticed I cant neither PING the server in question nor connect to it.I tried disabling the iptables firewall but I had no success.My server is running behind a Cisco Linksys WRTN310N Router with the DD-wrt firmware Installed. In which I already disabled the firewall.

Here are my network settings:

Ifconfig
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:26:b9:76:73:6b
inet addr:192.168.1.120 Bcast:192.168.1.255 Mask:255.255.255.0
inet6 addr: fe80::226:b9ff:fe76:736b/64 Scope:Link
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1

[code]......

This gets an empty result array. This function however works well in the previous server where the script was hosted before. No modifications where made whatsoever

VGN-SR490 / Linux - Missing Eth0 Ethernet Interface In Ubuntu - Can't Connect To Router

May 6, 2012

I'm having trouble getting my Ubuntu 10.04 machine (Sony Vaio VGN-SR490) to connect to the Internet by way of an Ethernet cable connected directly to my router. I'm able to connect to the Internet using this same cable using a Windows machine, so there's something wrong with the way Linux is configured.

Here are my network settings on Linux:

$ ifconfig
lo Link encap:Local Loopback
inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0
inet6 addr: ::1/128 Scope:Host
UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:16436 Metric:1

[code]....

It looks like the network adapters list is empty. I will now install both Windows XP and Ubuntu Linux dual-boot. I'm still not able to access the internet, even through Windows. I'm wonder if this could be a hardware problem with the computer or a problem with the router itself. Other computers can connect to this same router, and work fine.

I am running a headless gui-less install of Ubuntu Server 12.04 that is being used for a variety of different purposes... I want to be able to SSH into the device without RS-232, WiFi, or other network connection. What software combination and setup do I need to make this happen?Basically, I'd love the be able to have the equivalent of adb shell, but for when the tablet is running pure Ubuntu, not Android.

Limiting Upstream Rates For Web In Ubuntu 12.10

Jan 14, 2013

Network settings. What I want to do is limit the rate that people can download files from my webserver remotely. LAN connections should still be able to transfer at full speed, but anything outside of the local network should be limited to 200Kbps per connection. Is that even possible? Can I limit the number of connections per client (probably by IP)?

If this can't be done at the OS level, is there any way I could script it using PHP? Maybe read X bytes into a file and then sleep...

Can't Setup NAT For Linux Device?

May 14, 2012

I am having a problem configuring NAT for a Linux device on our network. I am far from a Cisco expert but I have configured this many times in the past for Windows machines quite easily. I do this using the Cisco ASDM 5.2 for PIC GUI. All I needed to do for the Windows machines was:-setup the static NAT rule(inside ip translated to outside ip)-create a security policy(outside, incoming rule) to allow traffic to the outside ipand hey presto it works, ie: i can ping the outside ip and access the device remotely if I have allowed correct ports.I am not sure if this is the correct method but it was how i was shown and has worked many times in the past.But with this Linux device its no dice. The Linux device isnt a desktop but a mediator for industrial air conditioning controls. It runs a web server which we can view temperatures etc... through a browser. This works inside our network by browsing to the inside ip but I am trying to set it up to work outside of our network.
