Slow Opening / Saving Files Through Remote VPN Access
Feb 12, 2012
I'm accessing a NAS server remotely through VPN (Netgear FVG318). I can connect to the NAS server but it is very slow when opening and saving documents. When accessing the network drive I am connected to the Internet through wireless connection. When I connect to the Internet through Ethernet cable opening and saving documents is much quicker. Is there anyway I can make the remote access quicker when accessing it through a wireless connection?

We've recently installed Windows Server 2003 at our small office for data storage, and have set up shared folders in the Win Server 2K3 for access from about a dozen Win XP Pro machines.Upon the first access of these shared folders from a Win XP Pro machine, we're required to enter a User Name & Password for the Win Server 2K3 machine:Is there a work-around for this? Perhaps some method in WinXP Pro to save the username/password? As it stands now, any time one of the WinXP Pro machines gets rebooted, or if the server gets rebooted, users of the Win XP Pro machines have to re-enter the username/password, and I'd like to find if there's away around having to re-enter that info.

I am trying to put a link on our Intranet page to several documents that are updated daily by specific users. These users save the documents in their department folders, which are only acessible by their department and I.T. (me). Right now I have a .bat file that checks every half hour of the work day to see if it has been updated, if it has it will be moved to a location in the Intranet folder which will update the link on the Intranet. While users can view the Intranet, they do not have access to view the files or folders that house the Intranet html coding etc. This option works but our users are complaining that it isn't instantaneous. Any ideas how I can do this on a network while keeping everyone's security in place and not give them extra rights to the Intranet folders?

I have a server connected to my router with a CAT5. I usually manage the server from my laptop connected to the router via WLAN. I often need to add files to a public folder on the server so it can be dowloaded by my clients when they need them. I can access my personal laptop from the server, but I cannot access the server's files from my laptop. This is recent and used to work fine. I also cannot acces other personal computers on my network that I often connect to

I seem to be having a real hard time getting the hardware for my scanner to be networked and i am trying to think of some different ways to do it and i think this might work.So our server is off site and we all access the server via remote desktop on our individual computers. ie) there is one computer that we all access with our own computers. We need our scanner to send the files to the server so that anyone logged on to the server can access it.But our server is off site and we cant connect our scanner to it.But since we have many computers here, I was wondering if there would be a way to plug the scanner in to MY computer at the office, have the offsite computer use the same remote connection to access my computer so that everyone else logged on to the server can access the folder where the scans are sent to.I know that there are ways to make my local hard drive accessible while im logged on to the server. So is there a way to allow everyone else on the server to access my local hard drives?

Basic info: SBS 2008 (64bit), XP-sp3 (32bit) workstations, gigabit switch, SEP. App is Sage Masterbuilder.Network config: Server is 1gb to switch over CAT6. All the workstations are 100mb over CAT5. SEP is set to exclude all pertinent files on both the server and workstations.Problem: The program is called MasterBuilder and does job costing and much more. In the job costing feature there is an option to "Compute" job costing. In version 16.x, when the "Compute" was performed the task was done very quickly. After an upgrade to version 17.x it is very SLOW. According to tech support, our network is at fault since it is a database function over the network.Troubleshooting done: Tech support blamed our network speed (100mb) and switch. We had a Netgear 100mb switch so we replaced it with a GB switch however the cabling will not support GB. Being a managed switch I set all the ports to 100mb except the server port. Even tried the server plugged into a 100mb port and no change. I am confident there are no speed issues on our network. All other programs perform flawlessly. ACAD, Exchange, data transfers and many other high data use programs work perfectly. I updated the network card drivers in the server as well. There are no performance or resource issues on the workstations. I monitored the network traffic at the workstations, server and switch with no issues and about 2.5% utilization during the slow "Compute" process. The switch shows no errors at all, no collisions, no dropped packets, nothing. I also disabled the SEP.
During testing and while the slow "Compute" was going on, I copied a large folder (400mb) from the server to the workstations see the impact on network utilization. As soon as I start the copy process the "Compute" process speeds up to normal and zips by as it should. As soon as I cancel the copy process the "Compute" drops right back to very slow.

#1 windows 7 computer has a wired connection and #2 windows 7 computer has a wireless connection. When at #2 and trying to save a file to #1, the save time may be about a minute. When doing the same thing from a computer #3 with windows xp, the save time is a few seconds. Tried safe mode with networking. Same thing. Tried disabling remote differential compression. No change. The three computers are in the same workgroup.

So I am working on a website with MySQL/PHP that I have been developing on my Linux box. I wanted to show a friend my progress so I temporarily opened up port 80. So he was able to just type in my public IP and it brought him to my localhost index.
My question is, when I type in my IP address in the URL bar, does the web browser automatically just assume port 80? What happens if I want to have 2 different servers from the same local network and one is running through port 80 and the other is running through port 90? In this case, would I have to type ":90" to access the machine running on port 90?

On my moms laptop, (month old Lenovo B570/i3-3230/4GB/W7), when transferring files to my Crucial Gizmo! 16GB USB Drive, it is pretty much impossible to surf the web. Loading websites take 30-60 seconds, it's ridiculous. Is this normal? Her router is Linksys WRT54G. Router is not connected via USB, in fact the Laptop is connected through ethernet cable (not currently using wireless).

Did not see any particualler message on the switch. ports are all full/100m.

Currently, my work computer has (obviously) a local desktop. Also, we use a Remote Desktop for our shared network drive (our head office is on the other side of the country). The annoying thing is that if I am looking up a document on the share drive (Remote Desktop) and I want to work on it, the Remote Desktop applications are slow. So I'd rather work on it on my local desktop. However, I have to email it to myself, exit the Remote Desktop, retrieve it from my mail (in local desktop) and then save it

I have a question on a VPN connection. I have a remote access VPN setup on an ASA 5505 to be able to remote into a location and check the HVAC program running on a PC. The remote connection connects fine, but when I use remote desktop to connect to the PC, it connects quick, but the screen redraw and reaction time is extremely slow. EG: I click on the program and it takes about 20 seconds to draw the screen, or I click on a menu bar and get the same times for reactions. Could this be a ISP Up/Download issue or is there something that I need to look at on the ASA to change?
If I connect to the remote and do a PING from my desktop to the remote Desktop, these are the results that I get:

I have found many well meaning suggestions to resolve this annoying aspect of networking between Windows 7, Vista and XP but it seems like we are all banging our heads against a brick wall. I have tried every suggestion I can find on other forums but still my Windows 7 computer cannot access my XP Home or Vista machines. The message I see each time I try is as follows:- "\WINXP (or \VISTA) is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have permissions. The account is not authorised to log in from this station." You will of course appreciate that the 'administrator' is myself. I can access files and a printer on Windows 7 from the other two computers providing I place shared files in the public folder ... no problem with this.
I have checked that all three computers have the same Workgroup Name. Yes, I have got Network Discovery turned on. Yes, I have turned on file and printer sharing. Yes, I have turned off Password protected sharing (and tried it turned on). Yes, I have set my network location to Work network. Yes, the computers I am trying to access do show in my network window ... each and everyone of them can be pinged from each other. I even have a little utility called Wireless Network Watcher that shows that the IP addresses, MAC addresses and each computer by name can be seen on the network.

And when I go to Network and Sharing Center, on "View your active networks" part, I click joined to give check mark on Pictures, Music, Videos, Documents, and Printers (the default setting: only printers that got checked). After I checked those all, I click "Save changes". But, if I go back to click "Joined" It was set as default, it is like it doesn't save my setting.

I'm considering upgrading my home server to 2012 Essentials from WHS 2011. WHS 2011 has always been strangely finicky and I have a new Win8 laptop, so i would like to take advantage of the new options in Essentials.that said, I was looking to access my data on the WHS 2011 system to back IT up, and all I see are a bunch of 4,194,304kb .dat files. I've been lucky in that I have never had to recover data from the server, so this has been an interesting issue. how does one access the backed up files on a WHS2011 computer, short of doing some kind of restore?

Also have tried suggestions in other forums such as simple sharing and creating an account on other pc's with same username and password as server. I am trying to transfer files from Laptop A to Laptop B. I can transfer files from B to A, but I can't transfer them from A to B. When I try to, I get an error message saying "Windows cannot access Laptop A".It then gives me the option to diagnose the problem (I'm using Vista on both laptops, by the way). When I click that, it gives me the error of "Cannot communicate with Laptop A. We pinged the remote host but did not receive a response".Laptop A is connected to the network according to it, it can access the internet fine and can access other laptops on the network fine. I have disabled the firewall, shared the folders appropriately, made sure they were both on the same workgroup (they are both on the default Vista WORKGROUP), and still nothing.

I have a desktop computer, Sony VAIO laptop, and a Motorola router. The computers are both running Windows 7 Professional. The desktop computer is running 32 bit Windows and the Laptop 64 bit.
My network appears to be Windows Homegroup which got setup after a crash of the desktop. Previously, I ran a network setup with Motorolas tech support and it ran fine (before crash and reinstall on desktop computer). I had access back and forth between both computers. I would rather not run Windows Homegroup but it looks like I am stuck with it if there is no way to remove it and resinstall another network or unless I can have two networks on my computer.
The error message that I get when trying access my laptop from the desktop is
"Windows cannot access \name-VAIOackups You do not have permission to access \name-VAIOackups"
I have set file sharing on both computers and am running all files as administrator. How can I regain access between these computers?

Recently my laptop, which is successfully connected to the wireless network, has failed to recognize shared folders on my desktop and the external hard drive connected to it. Laptop running 7, desktop running XP Pro. 2 days ago it was working fine. Yesterday it stopped working. I have made no changes that I can think of. All of the folders on the desktop and external drive that I want shared are set up for sharing. So, my question is, what do I need to do to again be able to read and write to these folders, especially the ones on the external hard drive. I believe the adjustment has to be made on the desktop, either in the network connections or the file sharing, but the laptop may need adjusted as well.
