Saving / Updating Network Files To Intranet?

Aug 23, 2011

I am trying to put a link on our Intranet page to several documents that are updated daily by specific users. These users save the documents in their department folders, which are only acessible by their department and I.T. (me). Right now I have a .bat file that checks every half hour of the work day to see if it has been updated, if it has it will be moved to a location in the Intranet folder which will update the link on the Intranet. While users can view the Intranet, they do not have access to view the files or folders that house the Intranet html coding etc. This option works but our users are complaining that it isn't instantaneous. Any ideas how I can do this on a network while keeping everyone's security in place and not give them extra rights to the Intranet folders?

Slow Opening / Saving Files Through Remote VPN Access

Feb 12, 2012

I'm accessing a NAS server remotely through VPN (Netgear FVG318). I can connect to the NAS server but it is very slow when opening and saving documents. When accessing the network drive I am connected to the Internet through wireless connection. When I connect to the Internet through Ethernet cable opening and saving documents is much quicker. Is there anyway I can make the remote access quicker when accessing it through a wireless connection?

Saving Passwords For Access To Shared Files On Windows Server 2K3?

Aug 20, 2011

We've recently installed Windows Server 2003 at our small office for data storage, and have set up shared folders in the Win Server 2K3 for access from about a dozen Win XP Pro machines.Upon the first access of these shared folders from a Win XP Pro machine, we're required to enter a User Name & Password for the Win Server 2K3 machine:Is there a work-around for this? Perhaps some method in WinXP Pro to save the username/password? As it stands now, any time one of the WinXP Pro machines gets rebooted, or if the server gets rebooted, users of the Win XP Pro machines have to re-enter the username/password, and I'd like to find if there's away around having to re-enter that info.

Sharing :: NAS Files Not Updating On Media Player

May 5, 2012

I have a Buffalo LS-XLBB2 Linkstation NAS streaming wirelessly to a Sony SMP-N200 media player. For some reason, whenever I add or edit a file on the NAS via my PC the file list is not updating on the media player.I have the database set to refresh at 20 minute intervals, but some files and folders never show up and some do after a few days. There are no problems with file type as I can play them back fine when I connect a USB drive to the media player, it just seems like the media player isn't getting a copy of the new database. When I manually refresh the database, it makes matters worse. All of the files disappear on the media player list, except for one folder (the same folder every time). The original file list comes back again if I restart the NAS and media player, but the new files are still not listed. I can access the new files on the NAS fine with my PC or laptop, so the files are there, the media player just isn't updating the file list.

Things I've tried:

- Checking that both the NAS and media player firmware is up to date

- Retarting both units

- Resetting both units to default

- Trying different files types (the first file has never shown up, the second file showed up in the list 5 days later)

- Changing the database refresh intervals on the NAS

- Manually refreshing/initialising the NAS database

The main advice on other forums seems to be to set up a media server on the PC and stream though that, but the whole idea of getting the NAS was so that I could watch videos on my TV without having to have the PC on all the time.

Home Network :: How To Manage Data Sharing In A Little Intranet On Windows

Mar 10, 2012

I should set up a network for a little enterprise. The requirements can be summarized as follows:

- All the "business" softwares have to be stored in a single computer (let's call it "the server"). The other computers (in this case there should be at most 2 or 3 computers) can execute these softwares through the server. So there are no local copies of those softwares on clients, only on the server.
- The main computer (the server) shares also a printer.
- All the computers in the network, are interconnected through a single wi-fi modem/router. Some of them are connected through the wi-fi interface and others through an ethernet cable.

the server, in order to perform some special procedures, has to connect to a special modem which connects it to a remote private network. In order to do so, the server disconnects from the local enterprise network because Windows does not allow me to stay connected to more than one network at the same time. The remote private network does not require to disconnect from any other network, it's just a constraint imposed by Windows. In the meantime, clients are not able to execute softwares anymore and cannot print anything.when the server is connected to the private network, it still needs to execute the "business" softwares.

Is it possible to keep the server connected to both the networks without denying the access to softwares, data and printers to anyone? If yes, how?If not, how can I design the topology of the network in order to share softwares and other data among all the computers (server and clients)? It's important that when the server connects to the private network every computer (including the server itself) can still access softwares, data and printers.

Home Network :: Updating Mac Cache When Moving To Another Location?

Apr 4, 2011

I ve read, that Cisco routers/switches drop the entries of their ARP cache after 4 hours and of the MAC cache after 5 minutes (in the defaults).Question: What is the regular way, to update the MAC cache when moving to another location in the network?(Background: My device is a hand-held device, and we have problems to get access to it from a terminal server in another network, when connecting the hand-held device at different locations.) One approach is to send in a fix interval a arp-ping to the gateway, or trigger the ping by the interface-up.How do other devices handles this problem? (Or do they ignore it, because the most will stay on its location/port their whole live?

Cisco Wireless :: WAP200 Updating Firmware Without Connecting It To Network

Aug 2, 2012

I was brought a WAP200 that was giving a client some issues. I've been told the first thing to try is to update/reinstall the firmware. I have the newest firmware file downloaded and saved, and I have the WAP200 plugged in and sitting on my desk.

I reset the access point and connected it directly to my computer with a patch cable, then entered the default IP address (192.168.1.245) to attempt to access the device. No go. Is that supposed to work and something is wrong with it? All I want to do is update the firmware, because if the device has been reset and the firmware reinstalled and it's still not working, then we'll just deem it defective and have it replaced.

But at least the speeds were constant and unchangingI have also tried Windows Easy Transfer. But that software makes it a bit harder to send back and for whenever i feel like it, and although sometime i would hit speeds 5 times faster than with the previously mentioned software (about 12MB/s) , those speeds were not constant. It would be slow (around 1MB/s) and then spike up, and then go back down, and repeat in that fashion

Unable To Browse An Intranet Computer

Jan 22, 2011

I have been stuck in a strange problems which happens occasionally--but too often to be ignored.I have a Windows 2003 Server running as a virtual machine via MS Virtual PC 2007. The host machine is a Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit. This setup used to run fine where I had no issues accessing the guest OS (Win 2003). My development environment is Visual Studio 2005 and 2010 based, both running on the host machine. Some days ago I started working on a ASP .NET application which had a lots of files on the guest OS. That would cause the dreaded 'Network Bios Limit Reached' error in VS. So tweaked a few Registry keys on both host and guest and that problem went away. But then I started to get a new kind of problem: Occasionally, within VS 2010, I could not save files and that would be so bad that the entire guest OS cannot be browsed (but can be seen in the Network Neighborhood and be pinged as well).I have undone all Registry changes in both guest and host but I still see this problem. Only the virtual machine running Win 2003 is occasionally un-browseable but still ping-able by other intranet computers: Win xp, vista, Win 7 but cannot browse until the guest win 2003 is re-started.Is it some kind of network buffer being too full? So far I only see this problem when working inside Visual Studio 2010 but it could be happening elsewhere. The guest win 2003 is assigned a static ip of 192.168.1.7 by the router, btw.

Cisco 300 Series Switch Internet / Intranet?

Dec 29, 2011

I just set up a new Cisco 300 Series Switch to replace an old switch on our network. We have probably 6 switches around our facility, all of them working fine (except for this one).

We have Windows SBS 2008. If I plug a PC directly into the switch that is NOT configured for SBS (in other words, it hasn't joined the domain) I have no problems accessing the internet. However if I connect PCs configured for SBS that have joined the domain to the switch, they can only access our intranet and not connect out to the internet.

The switch is currently configured for a static IP address and the client PCs are all dynamic.

Shared Files Not Accessible On Network

I can see the (shared) folders, but when I click on one I get the message: "You might not have permission to use this network resource..Not enough server storage is available to process this command." One solution suggested in several places is to change the IRPStackSize to 15. However, if I start the desktop in safe mode with networking, I can access the files.I can also access the machine using remote desktop. One extra frustration is that this is a problem that has happened relatively recently. It used to work OK.
