WRT54gl / N Access Point Connected To G Router
Jul 16, 2013
Any issues connecting an N access point via an ethernet cable to a G router?I currently have a wrt54gl router in one room (where it's connected by cables to various devices). I'm usually in another room and connect via wifi with other devices. Internet speeds over wifi are fine, but speeds are too slow when transferring files from wifi devices to other computers (windows file sharing).
I'm thinking of running a cable through a wall from the wrt54gl room to the other room and connecting a small N router, in access point mode. I'd then connect to the N access point and, through it, to the main router and other devices in the network. All wifi devices can run N.
Are there any issues in doing this? Anything I should know about configuring this? From other questions, it's not clear if I should use the same SSID for both routers. For that matter, should I turn off wifi on the wrt54gl?

In our house we use a Linksys WRT54GL router. When I am connected to the router via a cable I can play an online RPG without any problems.I recently connected an acecss point to the router ( a belkin N1 ). Even if I am connected with a cable to the accesspoint, which is connected to the router by cable as well, I get huge lag spikes about every 10 seconds while playing the game.

I just recently picked up a DIR-655 to replace my WRT54GL, hoping that I could get a better stream in my house. The house is 100 years old with plaster and lathe, and I can't relocate the modem and router. So I figured I could use my old WRT54GL as a signal booster/access point on the second level of the house. I read through a couple of guides, and I could get the router to broadcast the signal with full bars, and I could attach to it, but I didn't get any internet. The D-Link is a DIR-655 with firmware 2.10NA. The Linksys is a WRT54GL with Tomato 1.25. Here are a couple screenshots for the DIR-655

I use a E2000 as a wireless access point to the Internet, by connecting the LAN of the E2000 (set for x.x.x.5) to the LAN of an RVS4000 (Set for x.x.x.1). The E2000 is set for Automatic Configuration, and everything works fine..... Until a power failure occurs... Then, after everything boots up again.. I get the "NO INTERNET" prompt on the wireless....
By using Ping Plotter, from a computer on wireless end, and another computer with Ping Plotter on the wired side of the x.x.x.1 LAN, I've determined that it's the E2000 that has disconnected from the RVS4000.
I have found a work-around, though....No matter How the setting boots up, If I toggle away from and then BACK TO: NAT DISABLED in Advanced Routing, Everything is back operational..... Until the next Power Failure....
Is there any way of making this Automatic.
In another forum, there was a suggestion of putting the E2000 in Bridge mode in WAN settings... I can't find it....

I just bought a WRT54GL router, and am following the CD instructions for installation. Everything is connected according to picture (cable to modem to router to computer), and my phone and computer are working properly. However, the router is telling me that it cannot connect, and to check the ethernet connection.earlier a screen popped up to enter a password, but it was under the checking status screen, so I was not able to enter one. how to get the modem connected.

I connect a wireless access point to our network and within 10-15 minutes any wired LAN users internet connection goes down, yet the wireless internet works fine.
Here is how our small business network is setup:
1. We have a Server 2000 that serves as our companies domain controller and DHCP (I know, I know..dated). We also have another server on our network, which is a Server 2003, which is primarily a backup domain to our Server 2000 and hosts Quickbooks that our employees use and a small intranet website via ISS. We are connected to a router from our ISP with a gateway IP of 192.168.1.2. Our ip address structure is 192.168.1.xxx and subnet is 255.255.255.0.
2. I have configured the AP to be just that, an access point to broadcast wirelessly and made sure that DHCP is turned off on the router. I set it to a static ip of 192.168.1.215 and subnet of 255.255.255.0 and our default gateway of 192.168.1.2. Once I connect it, everything works fine for about 20-30 minutes, then our LAN internet goes down. The Wireless G access point that I am using is a TP-Link Model TL-WA501G.
My question is, how does the WAP know that our server is the DHCP? And are the wired LAN people getting disconnected because of a DHCP fighting issue between the WAP and our server 2000? I'm not a network engineer but know enough, but this problem is really baffling me.

my network isn't the most optimal at the moment. Starting from the router, it's a Thomson TG789vn my roommate has set up in his room. The service is DSL. I've connected my laptop to said WLAN from which I connect my access point turned DIR-600 to the internet and share it to my PC and Xbox 360.It works pretty well most of the time with 28 ping to a ~150 miles far server, yet sometimes I lose connection overall, or partly. For example, the Battlefield 3 beta stays connected to the internet while 3 different browsers are unable to load a single page. It seems like ongoing connection are unaffected while new ones don't work. The problem is usually fixed in a few seconds when I disconnect and reconnect the WLAN on my laptop.

I'm actually surprised it even works this well. how to optimize the whole thing or how to fix the partial lack of connectivity?

I have a big house so I have a e4200 on one end of the house upstairs and the WAP610n on the other end downstairs linked via CA6. I am having no issues with Laptops etc..just with Apple devices. I spent a lot of time with chat support (waste of time). WAP was flashed with latest firmware via hard wire no devices connected to wireless, has same ssid and security settings as router running on 2.4 ghz wpa2 personal AES. I am using 2.4 due to iphone4 does not support 5ghz and wap does not support dual band (another bummer). I am using AES instead of TKIP/AES mixed mode due to apple devices will not acquire dhcp with this setting and if they do they lose it right away. I have tried everything imaginable with the settings even changed beacon to 75, 50 RTS to 2304 etc...the current setting are the only ones that seem to work the best however when i run speedtest.net LA server or SD server the performance is horrible. On windows laptop i can achieve 27mbps down 2.5mbpsup, my apple devices use to achieve very close numbers to that on a simple configuration with two Dlink DGL-4300's one as router one as AP (G mode). So two major issues i have noticed is WAP610N has issues passing DHCP to apple devices and has extremely poor performance. So my question is will there be a firmware to correct this issue or a new hardware version that i can exchange this for if I RMA it or would it be best to call it a day and just get a E3200 and use it as a real simultaneous dual band AP???

I have a WAP54g set up as a repeater. It even shows in the WRT54g device list (Tomato firmware) as a WDS interface but nothing can connect to it. I have the repeater's MAC address in the AP and it's set to "Access Point + WDS" mode. I don't know what I could be doing wrong. Is it a conflict of DHCP on the AP vs static on the repeater?

We can see the 1552E gig1 interface is at 1000full duplex. Is there any chance the speed is causing the problem here. it seems the 1552E doesn't allow to set different speed & remains on 1000.

Few months back i had upgraded my Lynksys router with Coova AP firmware. Everything was working fine.I had configured the AAA server on CoovaAP and was able to access the internet.I had configured the user name and password as a "testuser" and "password" respectively. With that user id i used to access the Coova AP router and internet. Now i want restore the WRT54GL firmware on Lynksys router. But with the used id and password which i had configured the router is not at all accessible. So i did 30-30-30 reset on the router 2-3 times.
Now i can see openwrt login page with 192.168.1.1 IP address. It is asking for user id and password. I tried all the combinations of user id and password, but no luck. I browsed some link on the internet and some people have recommended that default user id as a "root" and blank password. But with that also the router is not accessible. I cant to do much on the router untill i will log in to router. I have spent lot of time on this.
how to restore back the original WRAT54GL firmware on my router. Anyhow i want WRAT54GL firmware on Lynksys router. Can somebody tell me how to achieve this?? Or atleast what user id and password should i try to log in to router?I tried to use telnet command on the router (Connected router to linux based computer with ethernet cable). But telnet also not working. It is not asking for password, and it saying disconnected.

We have received from a customer of us an WRT54GL box configured with a Coova software. This Wifi router was supposed to be a Wifi hotspot, but was not configured by us. This box is able, on startup, to get an IP by DHCP, to touch a remote Radius server, and so on (we "tcpdump" the Internet traffic, and we saw DNS requests, radius requests, ...)...
But, we are unable to connect to this box,by SSH or by HTTP, either by plug-in PC to the Internet RJ45 or the LAN RJ45. It has no IP as 192.168.1.1. Instead, it was configured to have 192.168.1.1 as gateway.
Of course, we have no doc on previous install, but only the admin/root password for SSH.We are afraid to lose the config (coova, ...) if we perform a hard reset. What is the best way for connecting on this box ?

I tried setting up a home network with my above Linksys router and can't connect to the internet now. I have the ethernet cable from my DSL Modem hooked into the ethernet port on the back of the Router. In port one, I have a cable which attaches directly to my laptop as I was advised to use a cable for initial setup of my home wireless network. I was able to get into the router to set all the passphrases and wireless security settings, etc. My ISP is PPPoe and I have entered both the UserId and Password that my ISP provided. However, upon clicking on the wireless icon, my system states I am connected but the status screen shows "No internet access". I have no problem connecting to the Internet when the cable runs from my DSL modem into my computer, so it's something to do with the router blocking it now.
My ISP does not support my Linksys router, of course, and they tell me I need to contact the manufacturer telling me the router needs to be set up as a 'bridge" ??? There is no mention of anything like this in the manual and I do not know if there is a setting on the router that is somehow blocking my being able to get an internet connection. This is all still with cables attached. Again, I seem to be able to 'connect' to the wireless network but I now cannot get to the Internet thru the router...

i want to block all internet access on all my computers from the time range of 9 PM to 8 PM. Yes, that gives 1 hour of internet access per day. However, it seems that there are certain rules of the router that won't let me do this. It seems I can't make 2 different policies for PC's within the same IP range (192.168.1.0 to 192.168.1.254) , it gives me the error: "The values you entered are invalid. Please try again."every time I try to do so. And when I try to give the time range from 9 PM to 8 PM it gives an error stating that the end time must be bigger than start time. I am using the WRT54GL with firmware v4.30.7.

I own an AG214 ADSL2 router that I use for my desktop PC. I now however also have a WRT54GL for wireless connection. I connected the WRT54GL to my AG214 via ethernet. Everything works fine, I have wifi and I can use it to connect to the internet. However when I go to my router (192.168.x.x) I can't seem to be able to find a wireless tab to configure my wifi settings. The network right now is unsecure and has a default name (linksys). How do I access my wireless settings? When I access my router it does go to the AG214, do I need to access the WRT54GL? If so, how do I do that?

setting up my new WRT54GL.this is my first encounter with a wireless router, though I've had 3 previous Linksys (hardwired) routers.I have to say, given that they give virtually no Mac support, it was a breeze….just plugged it in to my cable modem and my laptop and - boom - on the net on my first try!I'm able to access the router via it's web-based system and can now "tweak" with settings, but I'm running in to a lot of "tweakable" settings that I'm not familiar with.
First my setup. I have; (a.) 3 desktop Macs and a Samsung TV hardwired to the four Ethernet ports and (b.) my Mac laptop accessing the router via Airport Extreme wifi. All are happily accessing the web.But I realize that the reason that "(b.)" is accessing the web is that I've changed no default settings in the router and, not only can *I* access the router via wifi, but probably anyone driving down the road or sitting out in front of my house can access the web via my wifi. And I'd like to change that.I'm *guessing* that the router settings i need to change lie in the "Wireless Security" area of the router? And it's here that I'm running in to a lot of "tweakable" settings that I don't understand. But let me give an example of what I would *like* to accomplish.
Let's say that there are 3 different laptops…."A", "B" and "C". All 3 are Macs and running Airport Extreme. Now, "A" is my laptop, sitting here on my desk next to the router. As i leave Airport always turned on, I want "A" to *always* have access to the routers wifi *without* having to enter a username/password, i.e. when i turn "A" on, it's wired. Now "B" might be the laptop of a friend who happens by the house and need access. They would need to find my network on their laptop and then i would need to give them a password to let them get on .And finally, "C" is the guy I don't know out in the street whom I want to *never* have access to my network. So my question then is, can I accomplish this by changing settings in "Wireless Security" on my router and how/what would I change?

I just bought a WRT54GL which is working perfectly. I needed it to extend my home network for my kids (I have not a very fast internet connection and my kids are eating all of it... With the WRT54GL I can choose how much they can have. So my own network has a netgear modem and a netgear wifi access point which is in this network : 192.168.0.x.
This network is not blocked in any way (just password protected). For my kids network, the WRT54GL gives addresses in this network : 192.168.1.x and is limited in speed. Everything is perfect, I have internet connection on both of my network, There is just the problem that I cannot access my printers, my servers, my computers.... that are on the 192.168.0.x network from 192.168.1.x. Is there a solution ? I already tried to force the WRT54GL to go to 192.168.0.x network but no more connection. Should I "bridge" the two networks ? How can I do it ?

I just bought an LG Bluray DVD player (BD390) which is unable to find the access point in my home network. My router is a WRT54G, ver. 2.2, running firmware: Ver.4.21.1. My home network uses high speed cable with two computers on the wireless network, all working with no problems. The router is on the second floor but the two computers and the new BD390 are on the first floor - about 35 feet away. I have the wirelss security set to none and use only the specific computer MAC addresses to allow connection to this network.
I found directions in the forum for a setup using the LG BD390 but with a different Linksys router. I changed the security to WPA (AES); the Beacon interval from 100 to 75; the Fragmentation Threshold from 2346 to 2304; and the RTS Threshold from 2347 to 2307. The DVD wireless connection still failed to find my network. There is a "Push button" connection feature on the BD390 setup which I tried, but the only "button" on the router I could find was in the basic wireless setting, a green icon for the wireless SSID setup. No connection was made there either.
The recommendation connection from the LG manual is for a network cable, but that would be over 50 feet and a real pain to connect, so I would prefer WiFi.
