Why Is Network Using Up All The Bandwidth
Feb 8, 2011
We have a network of 20 computers here at work. We recently moved from using Outlook to Gmail for our email service. That change appears to have triggered a problem. No more than 5 computers at any given time can acccess the internet now.

I was wondering if there is a way to monitor the total bandwidth available at any given time? My ISP claims and is charging me for a certain amount of bandwidth but I suspect that during the day I am getting much less.
I would like to track available bandwidth continuously (or every 5, 10, 15 minutes) and log that data so I can show them the results. I'm on a Mac 10.7 but can use Windows XP also.

I've been having a bit of a problem lately trying to play Battlefield 3 on my PS3 when other computers are running on my network.
I'm looking for a program or method to set bandwidth limits on some devices to try to guarantee the PS3 enough bandwidth to play without lagging.
With the research I have done what I can find is that there is something called Quality of Service (QoS), and traffic shaping -- which are good and fine but I don't believe my Westell router supports them and I don't want to have to do anything crazy with my router.
Also I am currently dual booting Ubuntu Linux alongside Windows XP, and I don't have XP set up because I want to install Windows 7 on that partition once I can read DVDs (in the hardware forum), therefor I would really like to find a Linux program that I can use to shape my network traffic.

Without using another box as a router preferably. My Cisco Linksys router doesn't have any options for this but I heard you could possibly install some 3rd party firmware to get around that. This would be a last resort for me What I'm hoping for his some piece of software that could do this

Anyway, I have a cable connection with a modem and a D-Link wireless router. Some of the users are abusing the bandwidth, making it difficult for others to surf the net. What's the easiest way to set a bandwidth limit for each user? Also, it is possible to do it through the router as I don't want to keep my computer running the whole time?

My college hostel has a broadband connection in each room, with individual servers, all of which are connected to a central server. Each hostel has a unique ip range(eg 10.3.14.1-10.3.14.255, and others like this, and students are allotted random ips). Each hostel has a particular proxy address that allows us to access the internand by low i mean, quite lowet, and each user has a fixed bandwidth(which is low). My question is, is there a way for one user of a particular hostel to use the bandwidth of multiple users of the same hostel(such that they are in the same ip range, and have the same proxy server for accessing the internet).i.e Is there a way for me to increase my bandwidth by using the bandwidths of other non allocated ips within the range of my hostel, such that with a single broadband connection, i can utilize the the unallocated bandwidth.

I have an internet connection (landline and wifi modem) at my parent's summerhouse as I need it for work. Nobody else does around here so I get constant nagging from neighbours to give them the password. I can't say no however I'm afraid they may use up too much of my bandwith connection which could lead to alot of money being lost from my part. Constant and stable internet is a must for my work. how can I limit the bandwith I give to them? Can I create a second public network with limited bandwith or something like that?

I am looking to add a new connection between a Cisco 2851 and a Cisco 3745. Currently there are two T1 connections between them for a internal 192.168.5.0 network but I would like to add a ethernet connection to give a larger pipe for when transfering large files via that network. Can I just add the ethernet to the multigroup and shut the ethernet connection down when not needed(to limit it to t1 speeds) or is there some other way of doing this?

I have three laptops (running ubuntu with different kernel versions) with wireless adapter Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 3945 ABG. Laptop A ----- Laptop B ----- Laptop CI created an adhoc connection in laptop A with: Essid: 'ad_hoc', IP address: 10.42.43.1, Subnet: 255.255.255.0, Gateway: 0.0.0.0, Now the laptops B and C can see the wireless connection 'ad_hoc' and I can connect to them after setting IP 10.42.43.1 and 10.42.43.2 respectively. So, I created the adhoc connection between 3 laptops. Now, I wanted to check the bandwidth between the different paths. The tool iperf was what I used for TCP bandwidth calculation. The bandwidth between A and B was around 4.5 Mbps , between A and C was around 4.0 Mbps but the bandwidth between B and C (B being server) was 677 kbps whereas C being server was 3.99. I don't understand how can the bandwidth drop so high when B was made the server. The system adapters are identical.

I think that my ISP is throttling my bandwidth at the modem . how access full available bandwidth. When the technician installed the fibre optic line and then the modem, he showed me an amazing 77MB/s (about 600Mbps) before the modem!!But after the technician left these were the test results after the router:
1) SpeedTests.net:
averages, after router, show: UP between 56/60Mbps & DN 45/75Mbps
2)Local Server Speed Test:
average: UP 45Mpbs & DN 170Mbps
A Japanese Internet savvy guy explained that NTT East throttles the available bandwidth at the building by specific apartment/modem settings related to individual contract bundles. I signed up for the top bundle: TV, Phone and Internet connections. This is my Hardware/ software setup:
OS: Win7,
Line specs:
Line type: IEC60874-14
Connector type: SC
Core across: 9 micrometers
Clad across: 125 micrometers
ITU-TG-652
NTT East fibreoptic TV/Internet/Telephone bundle (100Mbps best effort) Hikari Next Family Type but 10Mbps is considered within parameters
Asahi ISP Internet contract
Modem:
GE-PON (WAN+Coaxial TV antenna)
"SCM-GE-PON-<H>A GV-ONU D<1>" model
Router:
RT-S300HI (4 Giga ports + 1 phone)
Router & Modem have Japanese firmware which I cannot understand and, according to the NTT East, I must rent both modem and router from them and "will not support any other modem/router setup".I could not understand if it was because of technical or contractual limits.
I have tried to test my throughput after the modem but I could not figure out where the DNS, IP, WAN etc strings of numbers should go and, in the end, I simply cannot connect to the internet from my laptop directly to the modem so I cannot perform the same speed tests after the modem.

I'm wondering if there is an easy way to monitor how much bandwidth is being consumed at any given moment for a home network.specifically, for the incoming/outgoing internet connection. My network is as thus:
DSL Modem -> Wifi Router (Linksys E4200v1 - PPPoE enabled here) -> Gigabit switch -> 2nd Wifi router (D-Link DIR-815 - DHCP disabled, repeats same SSID and password)
Most devices are connected directly into the switch, with one computer hard-plugged into the DIR-815 (I will eventually change this, as the 815 only has 10/100 ports).Basically, I want to easily be able to check how much up/down data is being sent for my internet connection. This means that I cannot use a program on a computer (I've used DL Meter before. Works great, but limited to a single computer).
The Linksys E4200v1 is using standard firmware, but I'm not opposed to loading DD-WRT onto it (was the original plan anyway, just never got around to it), if DD-WRT has this capability.Nice to have feature: Ability to see which devices are consuming what part of the bandwidth. Not necessary, but would be a cool feature.Alternatively, if there is a cheap (like $100 or less deal) box that can interface, say, between the E4200 and the switch, that can do this, that would work as well.

I currently use a E2500 router for my home network. I have setup the Wireless guest Network for my downstairs Tenant while he is out of work so he can still have some internet. The problem however is that often the guest network will take up 90% of my 55mb/sec bandwidth, leaving none for the primary network. Is there a way for me to Throttle the amount of bandwidth the Guest network can use? Say alot 10mb/sec for Guest access only, and leave the rest for our main network?

I've got the E2000 at home for our private network.
We are three guys sharing a flat. We have personal laptops, work laptops, mobile phones, games consoles, tablets etc that connect to the internet.
Problem is that when someone downloads stuff, the speed is slow for the rest of us. So i was hoping i could set up something like three "channels" so each of us could have the same download speed, ie 1 mbs each regardless if others are using the network at the same time. And then maybe a guest network for all the mobiles and tablets etc. MAC filtering for access for our personal laptops should work.
We have a 20mbit cable network line.
Can i do all of this on the E2000 and how?

Now I have a 172.16.0.0/16 network with a def. gw. for internet where is a MS Forefront TMG 2010 with BSplitter for traffic shaping. I purchased an 2921, 2,5 GB RAM, security+data license and an EHWIC-D-8ESG.
I made 4 subnets in a test environment with some access-lists, nothing fancy yet. How can I use FF TMG for bandwidth management, where should I put it? For those 4 subnets the def. gw. is, normally, the 2921 router. TMG is splitting traffic by client IP.

Is it possible that if i enable Port SPAN in any of the switchport and send a copy of traffic to any of the windows 2008 server, will i be able to monitor the bandwidth of the servers (Here I am only looking for traffic going from servers to PIX and then to internet, also vice versa).
Also will wireshark be able to differentiate specify the bandwidth of each servers seperately ?

I have a Cisco Aironet 1240AG Access Point and I am trying to setup a guest network that is secure and limited in bandwidth utilization. I see an option under security > SSID Manager on the web interface to select an interface of Radio0-802.11G, Radio1-802.11A or both. Can I put the guest network on the Radio1-802.11A and make it more secure/bandwidth limited or does this option not matter?

I show up at this business. They have about 40-50 systems. They have a 2003 AD server with a router, and 4 switches. There is also a dvr system on the network for cameras. Each switch is daisy chained together. Everything is working correctly except for the fact that the network drops about 5 times a day. Before they called us, they would just unhook one switch and plug it back in and it would work. At first, we took that switch and exchanged it with another switch in a computer lab to see if just the computer lab goes down. If it did, then that switch was bad. That wasn't the case, the whole network still went down. We had already left, but when we go back, our first choice will to see if there is a loop anywhere within the switch that will flood the network. Then, we were going to see if there was a switch that was getting a lot of traffic on the network to try to track it down. How can u monitor the bandwidth on the switches? They are 24 port switches. The switch is fs750/24 switch.

I've been experiencing problems with internet speeds at my church and my home. They both have security keys, but many people use it. I was wondering - Is there a free tool to monitor who/which device is taking up all of the bandwidth? Something that kind of points out, "Hey, this guy is really slowing you down". Possibly even (But not necessarily) kill their connection?

Is there a way to limit a whole PC windows XP, or a certain program to use only a certain about of your total internet connection bandwidth? For example, I have 5 PCs in home all one the same ISP connection. I have one PC that I am trying to backup files online but I can only run it at certain times due to the backup program using ALL upload/download speed. And that makes every other PC super slow.
