Home Network :: ISP Bandwidth Throttling - How To Replace Modem

Sep 29, 2012

I think that my ISP is throttling my bandwidth at the modem . how access full available bandwidth. When the technician installed the fibre optic line and then the modem, he showed me an amazing 77MB/s (about 600Mbps) before the modem!!But after the technician left these were the test results after the router:

1) SpeedTests.net:

averages, after router, show: UP between 56/60Mbps & DN 45/75Mbps

2)Local Server Speed Test:

average: UP 45Mpbs & DN 170Mbps

A Japanese Internet savvy guy explained that NTT East throttles the available bandwidth at the building by specific apartment/modem settings related to individual contract bundles. I signed up for the top bundle: TV, Phone and Internet connections. This is my Hardware/ software setup:

OS: Win7,

Line specs:
Line type: IEC60874-14
Connector type: SC
Core across: 9 micrometers
Clad across: 125 micrometers
ITU-TG-652
NTT East fibreoptic TV/Internet/Telephone bundle (100Mbps best effort) Hikari Next Family Type but 10Mbps is considered within parameters
Asahi ISP Internet contract

Modem:
GE-PON (WAN+Coaxial TV antenna)
"SCM-GE-PON-<H>A GV-ONU D<1>" model

Router:
RT-S300HI (4 Giga ports + 1 phone)

Router & Modem have Japanese firmware which I cannot understand and, according to the NTT East, I must rent both modem and router from them and "will not support any other modem/router setup".I could not understand if it was because of technical or contractual limits.

I have tried to test my throughput after the modem but I could not figure out where the DNS, IP, WAN etc strings of numbers should go and, in the end, I simply cannot connect to the internet from my laptop directly to the modem so I cannot perform the same speed tests after the modem.

D-Link DIR-601 :: Throttling Bandwidth For Specific Devices?

May 16, 2011

Bought a DIR-601 for my sister and her kids for their home.  Setup and works successfully.  Sis asked if there is a way to give her laptop bandwith priority over the kids devices.  As is, they are all sharing limited DSL bandwidth.  Reading the manual, I see the QOS feature for specific types of traffic, and other limiters and schedules to shut out certain MAC addresses entirely.  But wondering if this throttling feature exists in the router also.

Acrtiontec GT701D - Verizon Keeps Throttling Bandwidth

Jun 11, 2011

Long story short, the Westell wi-fi DSL modem router box that came with the the service craps out every couple days. I bought a new Acrtiontec GT701D to replace it and installed it in bridge mode. The Actiontec works great for a few days, much better than the verizon POS, then the bandwidth gets throttled down to a meg per second.

Do I need to tell Verizon I have a new DSL modem?

Throttling Specific Computers Access To Home Linksys WRT54GS Router?

Feb 1, 2013

I have a Linksys WRT54GS router that I have installed dd-wrt on.My household is overloaded with wireless devices, and living in a home of 6, speeds for everyone seem to slow down drastically later at night when everyone is simultaneously connected and streaming media -- whether it be Netflix, YouTube, etc.. My typical speed wired to the router with no other connections is around 25 mb/s down and 1-2 mb/s up.Obviously, it's going to slow to a crawl when we have an iPad, 3 iPod touches, an iPhone, a Wii (playing Netflix) and 4 PCs all connected simultaneously. What I need to do is give my personal computer priority and throttle all other devices. So that I myself will have decent speeds while hampering all of the other household connections. I rely on those speeds for my job and that should have priority over my brother watching music videos on YouTube.

Home Network :: Bandwidth In Adhoc Connection Between 3 Laptops

Jul 20, 2011

I have three laptops (running ubuntu with different kernel versions) with wireless adapter Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 3945 ABG. Laptop A ----- Laptop B ----- Laptop CI created an adhoc connection in laptop A with: Essid: 'ad_hoc', IP address: 10.42.43.1, Subnet: 255.255.255.0, Gateway: 0.0.0.0, Now the laptops B and C can see the wireless connection 'ad_hoc' and I can connect to them after setting IP 10.42.43.1 and 10.42.43.2 respectively. So, I created the adhoc connection between 3 laptops. Now, I wanted to check the bandwidth between the different paths. The tool iperf was what I used for TCP bandwidth calculation. The bandwidth between A and B was around 4.5 Mbps , between A and C was around 4.0 Mbps but the bandwidth between B and C (B being server) was 677 kbps whereas C being server was 3.99. I don't understand how can the bandwidth drop so high when B was made the server. The system adapters are identical.

E4200v1 - Monitor Home Network / Internet Bandwidth?

Apr 7, 2013

I'm wondering if there is an easy way to monitor how much bandwidth is being consumed at any given moment for a home network.specifically, for the incoming/outgoing internet connection. My network is as thus:

DSL Modem -> Wifi Router (Linksys E4200v1 - PPPoE enabled here) -> Gigabit switch -> 2nd Wifi router (D-Link DIR-815 - DHCP disabled, repeats same SSID and password)

Most devices are connected directly into the switch, with one computer hard-plugged into the DIR-815 (I will eventually change this, as the 815 only has 10/100 ports).Basically, I want to easily be able to check how much up/down data is being sent for my internet connection. This means that I cannot use a program on a computer (I've used DL Meter before. Works great, but limited to a single computer).

The Linksys E4200v1 is using standard firmware, but I'm not opposed to loading DD-WRT onto it (was the original plan anyway, just never got around to it), if DD-WRT has this capability.Nice to have feature: Ability to see which devices are consuming what part of the bandwidth. Not necessary, but would be a cool feature.Alternatively, if there is a cheap (like $100 or less deal) box that can interface, say, between the E4200 and the switch, that can do this, that would work as well.

Linksys Wireless Router :: Managing Bandwidth / Users On Home Network With E2000

Aug 13, 2012

I've got the E2000 at home for our private network.

We are three guys sharing a flat. We have personal laptops, work laptops, mobile phones, games consoles, tablets etc that connect to the internet.

Problem is that when someone downloads stuff, the speed is slow for the rest of us. So i was hoping i could set up something like three "channels" so each of us could have the same download speed, ie 1 mbs each regardless if others are using the network at the same time. And then maybe a guest network for all the mobiles and tablets etc. MAC filtering for access for our personal laptops should work.

We have a 20mbit cable network line.

Can i do all of this on the E2000 and how?

Home Network :: Use Laptop As Network Tap Between (DSL) Modem And Wrt54gs By Creating A Bridge?

Jan 8, 2013

I'm experimenting/attempting to use a laptop as a network tap between my (DSL) modem and a wrt54gs by creating a bridge with two NICs in the laptop. My problem is I can't seem to get connectivity on the user end of the router. I can't ping the bridge from an end computer...

DHCP is disabled in the router, but even when manually configuring the IP address on an end computer and using the bridge as a default gateway I can't ping out.

Am I completely misunderstanding the purpose of a NIC bridge?

Replace Speedtouch 330 Modem With Netgear Router Dgnd3700?

Dec 16, 2012

install a new N600 Wireless Dual Band Gigabit ADSL2+ Modem Router - Model DGND3700, to replace a Thompson Speedtouch USB Modem.

PC Windows XP Home Premium Media addition - Main PC X2 Laptops Win7 & Vista - fully working on wireless no issues.

I have managed to get two laptops working wirelessly with no problems, my main problem is the master pc needs to be able to use this router as well, but I cannot get it to work via the Ethernet cable!! I can get to to the Routers config page, I have done the following:

unplugged and removed the speedtouch modem, the old dial up connection is still available on the pc along with the speedtouch software and driver, I left this in place just in case the pc needs to revert back to the speedtouch modem, if I am unable to resolve this issue.

I have set the ip address on the PC to static and input the relavent Subnet and Gateway I can ping the Routers address 192.168.0.1 even though I have reserved the PC's Mac address and IP Adress I am unable to get to the internet. I have tried setting up a new internet connection via windows wizard.

when i look into the nework connections section in windows the local area connection is 100mb and there seems to be another connection which looks like another internet connection this indicates I am connected however I still cannot get an actual google session running.

Cisco WAN :: Replace Modem With 2621 Router With WIC-1ADSL Module

Dec 26, 2012

I have a Cisco ASA5505 with Frontier ADSL.  I broke into their crappy little modem and obtained the settings needed to replace their modem with a 2621 router with a WIC-1ADSL module.  I have a static IP from Frontier which is on my ASA5505 and the Dialer interface on the 2621 gets its address from Frontier via DHCP.  There are devices behind the ASA which I need access while in the field, IP Cameras, Seed Treater, etc., so I have Anyconnect running on the ASA and can access everything from my laptop, iPhone and iPad from whereever.  The issue arises when my laptop is in house and communicating with my parent company and I try to make a cell phone call off the network extender.  The call is choppy since there is no QoS and the data is strangling the voice.  Since I have control over the 2621, I added another network and NAT it into Frontier without them knowing.  I have since placed the network extender on this network as well as a WAP200 that is wide open for my customers when they are in the office.  Doesn't fix the problem but...

I have now added Evertek Wireless internet with a static IP also but they use a reservation based on the MAC Address of my interface of the ASA.  This plugs directly intot the ASA via ethernet (I would assume their antenna is just a wireless bridge).  I set route tracking on the Evertek side and use the Frontier as a backup and all devices on my NAT network still funcion on Frontier DSL and all my nornal data traffic is out Evertek.  The issue is that the Evertek Wireless is not very fast or reliable (today in during a snow storm, it could barely keep an internet connection).  And I had a problem with Anyconnect using either connection. I got that working.  But think that the "ip address x.x.x.x y.y.y.y dhcp setroute" on the Evertek side messed things up from a routing standpoint when I would connect from the outside on the Frontier side.  For testing, I switched the tracking around and now the connection on the Frontier side does not work but that is besides the point.

Frontier is going to try out an ADSL/2 connection next week which brings up another issue; all Frontier connections come into my buidling on a single 4-pair wire so if they go down, all my internet except the Evertek goes down.  I have a Raven Slingshot coming for installation shortly that cannot go down; it will provide RTK (sub-inch accuracy GPS) to my customers that have auto-steer and auto-shutoff capabilities in their tractors via cellular data modem.  So, while they are planting their crops in the field, if my connection goes down, their tractor will not function.

I also had a Cisco UC320W but it died a few days after it went off warranty so I replaced it with a Dell Server running 3CX IP PBX that supports Cisco SPA525G2 and SPA501G IP Phones.  There is a 3CX iPhone app that allows me to receive calls while in the field, it uses a proprietary tunnel that I have open on the ASA.  With 4-pair coming into my building, I will be left with a single 1-pair for phones so I am considering a SIP provider instead.

Can/should I move the Evertek ethernet to the third ethernet interface on the 2621 and track the Frontier DSL against the Evertek (backup) on the 2621 side and use the ASA to track the ADSL/2 against the 2621?  Should I acquire an 1841 (or some other device that suppports the HWIC) with a ADSL/2 card and use HSRP between the 2621 and 1841?  Is that even possible?

Home Network :: Router Not Getting IP From Modem?

Feb 12, 2012

so yesterday I went out and bought a new Cisco Linksys E4200v2 router. My ISP is Communicomm (terrible, but they're the only one here). I also have a Terayon TJ 715x cable modem. I shut down pc & cable modem, connected everything, and powered back up. I am able to access the router config page at 192.168.1.1, but the router does not receive an ip address from the modem. If I plug the modem directly to the pc, I get an ip and am able to connect to the internet. I have called my ISP several times, and they tell me that they do not use MAC address filtering. The only MAC address that they need is that of the modem, which they have. This modem has been working fine for several years. After spending over an hour on the phone with Linksys support, they have determined that the router is functioning properly.I also tried hooking up an older netgear router and got the same results. The following is my ipconfig with the modem connected directly to the pc. [CODE]

Home Network :: PCs On Modem Can't Find PCs On Router?

Oct 3, 2011

I have a wireless modem on the first floor of my house, where I got cables through the wall running throughout rooms in first floor, ground floor and basement.I have my small business at the basement, so I have 2 PCs one printer and one external hard disc which also connects directly to a modem/router.I have 3 PCs from the first and ground floor that connect through the wall to my modem, and everything works well. But for my basement, which only has 1 lan cable output on the wall, I got myself a router so that I can connect all my devices.I connect the router with my modem, and then the PCs, printer and hard disc on the router. The PCs have internet access, so I know the connection to the modem has nothing wrong to it. But I am not able to access the PCs connected to the router from the PCs connected to the modem, or vice versa.

I was told to not obtain an IP address automatically, so I assigned my modem and router to work on 192.168.10.x and gave my PCs IPs such as 192.168.10.19 Only after setting this up did all my PCs have internet access, but again, no network communication between PCs on modem and PCs on router. One thing that might be worth mentioning, is that through time, my network keeps going from Home Network: Network, to Network 2, Network 3, and so on... now it's on Network 5. I have no clue why this happens, and if it's related to my problem

D-Link DIR-615 :: Connect 2 Wireless Modem Routers + Switch In Home Network

I have 3 pieces of hardware:

1. Green Packet DX-230 WiMAX modem with router
2. D-Link DIR-615 ver G2 (from my ISP)
3. D-Link 8 port desktop switch

I previously used the DIR-615 with my high speed broadband connection. However I had to move to a new house and here I can only get WiMAX. I want to...Place the WiMAX modem upstairs to serve as modem and wireless access point Have the DIR-615 function as the main router and firewall (downstairs) Use the switch to connect all the rooms in my house FYI my WiMAX modem has no connection configurations. I just plug it in and it'll connect automatically to the WiMAX signal. It has 2 LAN ports but no WAN port. From my understanding of networking, I have to turn off DHCP on my WiMAX modem, put it in the same IP range as my DIR-615 (192.168.0.100-199), and disable UPNP and NATPMP. After this I'm stuck. How do I tell my DIR-615 to use the WiMAX modem as it's WAN connection?Should I reserve an IP for the modem in my DIR-615?

Netgear N300 Dgn2200v1 Adsl2+ Modem Router / Extending Wifi Range For Home Network?

how to properly configure 2 different hardware devices to extend the current wifi signal of my home network.I'm using a Motorola SBG6580 DOCSIS 3.0 cable modem as my primary access point (AP) and a Netgear N300 DGN2200v1 ADSL2+ modem router which will function "behind" the SBG6580 in repeater mode. I previously had DSL for my internet connectivity but recently switched to broadband cable for faster speeds.Due to the layout of my home, I cannot physically connect the Netgear router to the Motorola modem via ethernet cable and need both devices to communicate wirelessly. I have already done extensive reading on this subject and best practices suggest that, whenever possible, both units should be the same brand/manufacturer. The Netgear appliance does have the capability of being configured as a repeater so if I don't have to buy a "network extender" that would be my preference.I understand that both units must be configured to have the same SSID, subnet, wireless channel and security encryption. In repeater mode the Netgear router can't be configured to use WPA2-PSK so I need to use WEP instead.

Cisco WAN :: Throttling Traffic Through ASA5510

Apr 17, 2013

Although this is not a common issue, we have experienced occasions where our internet utilization has been maxed out (slowing everyone else down). Utilizing some features in the ASA, such as Top Usage Stats, along with PRTG monitoring,  have always tracked the culprit down to being a single user -- be it someone downloading movies to a portable device, or downloading ISO's. (And for some strange reason it seems to always be a wireless user.)  We are using an ASA 5510 for our firewall, and I was wondering if its possible to prevent a single client from consuming a disproportionally large percentage of our internet bandwidth? If the ASA 5510 doesn't have the ability to do this on it's own, are there any recommendations for add-on solutions?
