I'm looking for a wireless router that can throttle per device. That is, a specific internal IP address can have a specific upload/download speed limit assigned to it that the device cannot exceed. I'm not looking to allocate bandwidth priority or block a specific protocol.

With the BEFSR81Router conected I get 1000kbps.
I have a Linksys WRT54GS router that I have installed dd-wrt on.My household is overloaded with wireless devices, and living in a home of 6, speeds for everyone seem to slow down drastically later at night when everyone is simultaneously connected and streaming media -- whether it be Netflix, YouTube, etc.. My typical speed wired to the router with no other connections is around 25 mb/s down and 1-2 mb/s up.Obviously, it's going to slow to a crawl when we have an iPad, 3 iPod touches, an iPhone, a Wii (playing Netflix) and 4 PCs all connected simultaneously.What I need to do is give my personal computer priority and throttle all other devices. So that I myself will have decent speeds while hampering all of the other household connections. I rely on those speeds for my job and that should have priority over my brother watching music videos on YouTube.

Utilizing some features in the ASA, such as Top Usage Stats, along with PRTG monitoring, have always tracked the culprit down to being a single user -- be it someone downloading movies to a portable device, or downloading ISO's. (And for some strange reason it seems to always be a wireless user.) We are using an ASA 5510 for our firewall, and I was wondering if its possible to prevent a single client from consuming a disproportionally large percentage of our internet bandwidth? If the ASA 5510 doesn't have the ability to do this on it's own, are there any recommendations for add-on solutions?

Sis asked if there is a way to give her laptop bandwith priority over the kids devices. As is, they are all sharing limited DSL bandwidth. Reading the manual, I see the QOS feature for specific types of traffic, and other limiters and schedules to shut out certain MAC addresses entirely. But wondering if this throttling feature exists in the router also.
View 11 Replies View RelatedWe have 110mbps internet service. When we have the 5505 behind the cable modem, our speed drops to 55mbps or so. If we remove the 5505, we see the full 100mbps. I assume the 5505 can handle the speed; if so, what other things should I be looking at?As an aside, we used to have 50mbps wich worked fine, then the ISP upgraded to 60mbps and the through put dropped to 30mbps (It always seems to be half)
View 2 Replies View RelatedLong story short, the Westell wi-fi DSL modem router box that came with the the service craps out every couple days. I bought a new Acrtiontec GT701D to replace it and installed it in bridge mode. The Actiontec works great for a few days, much better than the verizon POS, then the bandwidth gets throttled down to a meg per second.
Do I need to tell Verizon I have a new DSL modem?
I think that my ISP is throttling my bandwidth at the modem . how access full available bandwidth.When the technician installed the fibre optic line and then the modem, he showed me an amazing 77MB/s (about 600Mbps) before the modem!!But after the technician left these were the test results after the router:
1) SpeedTests.net:
averages, after router, show: UP between 56/60Mbps & DN 45/75Mbps
2)Local Server Speed Test:
average: UP 45Mpbs & DN 170Mbps
A Japanese Internet savvy guy explained that NTT East throttles the available bandwidth at the building by specific apartment/modem settings related to individual contract bundles. I signed up for the top bundle: TV, Phone and Internet connections.This is my Hardware/ software setup:

Router & Modem have Japanese firmware which I cannot understand and, according to the NTT East, I must rent both modem and router from them and "will not support any other modem/router setup".I could not understand if it was because of technical or contractual limits.
I have tried to test my throughput after the modem but I could not figure out where the DNS, IP, WAN etc strings of numbers should go and, in the end, I simply cannot connect to the internet from my laptop directly to the modem so I cannot perform the same speed tests after the modem.
My BEFSR81 is my primary router and has DHCP turned on. The router's DHCP range is set to accommodate 12 devices. I have three computers wired to it and their Host names (as specified in the set-up of each computer) show up in the router's DHCP device table. I also have two printers (one old Brother HL5250DN laser printer and one new HP Photosmart Premier C410a inkjet printer) connected and there are blanks where the Host name should go. I would like to be able to tell which printer is which when I am looking at the DHCP device table. How can I get a names associated with each printer's IP address in the router's DHCP device table? (The real problem is that the router seems to have both printers at the same IP address (192.168.1.100) and if I can get one of them to change I'd like to know which one it was!)

Now my phone and one laptop device is connecting fine, no problem, but my old laptop that I need to go on is not liking the new connection. It's saying that it is connected but only local access is available and it says the connection is unidentified.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI get internet through my Desktop using a wifi card that picks up the internet from my in-laws across the street (gets a really good signal btw). Anyway, that connection is perfectly fine, and up until recently I had been using a Hawking Range Extender to repeat the signal through my house connecting it to my PC's ethernet port and using the Internet Connection Sharing feature. For some reason that is beyond me it suddenly stopped working. Or rather, it will work for a couple minutes and then stop receiving packets.I'm thinking the device is faulty since it never actually worked that great to begin with. Is this type of setup possible for a wireless Router such as a lynksys device? Or would I need a repeater/range extender like I have been using?Again I would use the Wifi from my PC to share the connection with the Router to broadcast that signal through my house.

But now It only allows my laptop, when I try to connect with my ipod touch or desktop, not only does it fail, the entire network crashes and my laptop loses it and its gone. It then takes about 2 minutes to come back up. So whenever I attempt to connect with another device the network crashes. so right now only my laptop is connected.I downloaded & updated to the newest firmware, did not work.I tried resetting the router, and made the network all over again, did NOT work.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI am trying to have one of my devices always get the same internal IP address. I have an IP camera that I have setup with port forwarding. I think I found where to set it, but it isn't 100% clear that I have it set correctly. I have a E900 wireless router.
From my router's homepage I went to Setup - Basic Setup --> DHCP Reservation button. Then I found my camera in the top box (Select Clients from DHCP tables) and checked the box next to it and pressed the "Add Clients" button. Now I see my IP camera (along with the IP address I want it assigned to and it's MAC access in the section labeled "Clients Already Reserved".
So, did I go through to the procedure correctly to have my IP camera always get the same IP address?
wrt54g v1.1 After setting up the wireless router, I can use the internet on the pc as well as a wireless device. However after putting my pc in standby mode then back on, I can no longer connect to either. I have to restore factory defaults each time and re-enter all passwords and settings.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have an EA4500 and am using Cisco Connect Cloud software. Its working mostly fine except that I have one device on the network that will not show up in the device list. This is not an issue in itself and normally I would ignore (although it used to show up when I forst got the router) however..
The device is a WDTVLive media unit and required access to windows shares on a media server. Now the WDTVLive device is server an ip address by the router and is available from everywhere on my network but every couple of days it loses the capacity to search windows shares.
I know what you are thinking and I initially thought the same, this is an issue with the WDTVLive box. However one day I spent a few hours trying to resolve (Am an IT Consultant and know a little about networks) and found that I could not fix the issue. I then rebooted the router and it started working. I have since confirmed that every time it breaks I have to reboot the router.
I have full signal strength but I can't connect to the internet from any device. Internet works fine when connected directly to devices. Devices will show an IP address but will not connect to the internet. The first router worked fine for about a year and did the same thing so I replaced it but now after 1 month, this router is doing the same thing!

Everything set up great with no problems and after a day or 2 I managed to get all home devices connected (2 laptops, 2 printers, an iphone, 1 tv, 1 blu-ray, an old desktop, and a tablet). Everything was connected right and working and I installed the Linksys app on my iPhone which let me see what devices were connected and all that. Well, last night, an unknown device showed up as a connected device. It's labeled as: android_(insert string of characters) and has a MAC address. I've tried and tried to identify what this device is and I can't. Everything else on our network is still showing up independently of that device. I'm worried that someone using our connection and possibly putting our device security at risk. What can I do to A) try to identify what the device is and B) if it is an intruder, block it's access.

I wrote down the password of my wireless router on installing it. However, each time I want to add a new device to the router, the password that I wrote down does not prompt the router to recognize the new device or equipment. How do I go back into my computer and retrieve the password to my router if I did copy it down wrongly? how to retrieve the password.
Under Devices, I find that my Apple laptop (WIFI connection) and our Dell Desktop (LAN) connection are considered the same device. The operating system the EA3500 shows for this device is the apple IOS system both connections and address numbers appear in this device. This makes it impossible to set up separate parental control settings on each computer. What could I do to get the EA3500 to recognize these as separate devices? I have already tried forcing the WIFI network address of the Apple to another address. All that happened was the device address updated in on the EA3500 device list, but the LAN and WIFI addresses remained together still under the same device name and MAC OS on the device list.
I have the latest firmware loaded on my EA3500. This was not an issue previously when I ran the old firmware. Below is a what I see in the device listing showing the LAN address for the Dell and WIFI address for the Apple all on the same screen. When I turn one device off, the respective entry goes away. Only when both computers are off does the single device entry on the EA3500 reflect being offline.
installed the E1000 router that AT&T provides with U-verse DSL. All works fine except that the device name that appears under "Network Infrastructure" in Windows 7 shows the original default name that Cisco assigned instead of the name I chose. It does not affect operation or performance but looks oddball. I don't see how it can be changed.

When I select to do it manually (upstream bandwidth) it limits ALL devices and I do not want this. I want to limit the bandwidth on only one device that is connected (ie an Xbox)

I got the new EA6500. For the last few days I've noticed there are multiple devices showing under one device with different IP addresses. In the beginning they show up individually with their own device names, then somehow combine. Each device is different ie. computer, phone, DirecTV box, etc. I did a hard reset, re-flash and still it keeps happening.
