Wireless Network - Router For Both Internet And NAS
Sep 11, 2011
I'm looking set up a wireless network at home, I'm working with a10.00Mbps connection so top of the range isn't really necessary, but I would love to be able to plug in my two external hardrives and access them wirelessly as well. What router would you suggest for both internet and NAS, and If the router had a single usb could you use a hub to plug two hardrives in or would that make it whig out?

can connect to the network but not the internet. In IPCONFIG it says media is disconnected. In properties it says adapter is not connected. But I can see the network, I can ping every computer on the network, just can't get to the internet.Reinstalled all the drivers, tried renew, netsh commands, flushdns, disabled & reenabled. 2 other computers connect to the internet and each other with no problem. Can connect to other WI Fi's too, but still no internet access.

I have cable internet with a speed plan in the 10-15 mbps range. I have a wireless Belkin g router that is several years old. Connected to the router I have my cable modem as well as my PS3. I connect wirelessly from my PC to the internet, as my PC is in the other room (more on that later). When I'm streaming movies via WiFi to my TV, the connection is highly unstable. Some days, I will not experience any stuttering (or very minor stuttering), whereas other times the stuttering is almost unbearable. Last night, I had trouble streaming a DVD quality movie whenever it went above 2 mbps total bitrate. Other times, I can stream HD movies without much stuttering (except for very action packed scenes).Interestingly, I stream Netflix movies over my PS3 via a *wired* connection. Last night, I conducted a speed test on my PS3. First, I had the PS3 plugged into the wireless router. I achieved speeds around 2 - 4 mbps on average. I then plugged my PS3 directly into my modem and achieved speeds around 10 mbps! The boost was instantaneous. I should note that on my PC, I speed test regularly over the WiFi and achieve around 4-6 mbps on average (only once did I achieve 11 mbps).

I'm having trouble connecting my 360 to the wireless router to gain Internet access.I use my phone's Wi-Fi to gain internet access with NO issues. My current setup: NetGear Wireless router is connected to my D-Link wired router, and I can access the internet no problem. (10 MBPS down, 5MBPS up)When I try to connect the 360 to the Netgear Wireless router, it connects to the Network, but Internet test it reads "DNS error - The router or modem may mot be automatically providing DNS settings. Try a manual DNS setting instead."(Next suggestion) "DNS Error - If you have a PC that can successfully browse the web, check it's network properties to find the DNS address it uses..."Now, I have XBMC running on my computer, and the 360 can access the network so it shows up under Video Apps so I can see a file list to stream movies. When I try to run a movie, it says I must download an update - so I can't watch the movies at all.I juso set it up so I can access the Network AND Internet.Again, Netgear wireless router (which 360 connects to) connected to D-Link wired router.

I have a Comcast SMC8014 cable modem connected to a Linksys BEFSR81 Router and a Netgear Prosafe 24-port 10/100 switch connected to one of the LAN ports on the router. There are many PCs connected to this network, including one used as a file server. I would like to add a LINKSYS WRT54GL wireless router to this mix to allow visitors wireless access to the internet and network printers but NOT allow access to the file server

I have a Free Community WiFi that I can access from the edges of my house, but not from anywhere inside the house. My personal Internet connection is out due to the fact our bill trippled for some reason we can't figure out 2 months ago without telling us. We've had an auto payment sent every month for just over what it should be. So until I get this sorted out with the ISP I have to use the community WiFi. I would like to be able to use the internet from somewhere other than the wall in my kitchen.
So, I have a number of Routers, 2 Actiontec Q1000s, but only 1 power suply, a D-Link WBR-2310, D-Link DIR-601 & a few other ods & Ends including a 12DB Amped Wireless & An 8DB Hawking Tech antennas. What I want to do is to use 1 router to connect to the CommunityShared Network, A wired connection to another router (Preferably the Q1000 as it's already setup for my Home Network) & that router to serve my Home Network, preferably over the WAN port if possible, but I can run VPNs on each device for a week if I have to.
Right now I have one computer setup in the kitchen with a High Gain Antenna conected to a Atheros SUB-362 EXT USB WiFi card, (This computer gets 7Mbps Down & 9Mbps Up) then the built-in WiFi card connected to my Home network with a Static IP, The Q1000 set to use that IP as the Gateway. I can get about 200Kbps max on devices connected to the Home Network. But the biggest problem is that my old Atheros card disconnects randomly when accessed from one of the devices on the home network. I'm fine with a ThirdParty Firmware Update on the D-Links if necessary. When I look online I only find posts about how to extend a network using a second router or how to use a specific router to repeat or bridge.

Just set upa new e1200 on my brand new primary PC - connects flawlessly. One other PC in the house and an iphone also connect on the network to the internet with no issues. The problem: My laptop connects to the secure network without prompting for a password, but then does not connect to the internet at all. This same laptop easily connects to the internet via the network as a guest, just as it should. Tried using Easkey, but same result: laptop connects OK to the secure network without a password prompt, but then does not connect to the net.

I have an E4200, and upgraded to Connect Cloud. It was buggy, and so I downgraded to the firmware before that. I have all the computers working fine in the house except my desktop. it connects fine to the network, can see the other computers on the network, can even do a windows update. But when I go to use google chrome or internet explorer it just wont access the internet. It doesn't seem to work either if it is a wired connection, or a wireless connection It was fine before the upgrade and subsequent downgrade. It was on this desktop that i installed and uninstalled thew Connection cloud. I know enough to set up the network but when it doesn't work

My main pc is running Windows 7. It is also running MS Windows firewall and anti-virus. It connects fine to the internet via an ethernet connection to the WRT610N.
I am trying to access the internet wirelessly from another pc running Windows XP. The wireless pc indicates it is connected to the network with excellent signal strength. It will not connect to the internet. I can successfully ping the router but it is unsuccessful when pinging an internet address.
An additional wireless pc (WinXP) and my phone (Android) also show connected to the network but will not connect to the internet.
These wireless computers used to be able to access the internet before we moved house. They only thing I think that has changed is the addition of Windows firewall and anti-virus. It may however be something else.

I have a home network with a Linksys E4200 connected to the ISP's fiber box. The problem is that when I'm connected to the Linksys, either wired or wireless, the connection to the internet will drop after what seems to be a random amount of time (normally anywhere from 2-10 minutes). I can restore the connection by doing any of these things:-reboot Linksys-disconnect and reconnect cable from router to fiber box-if on wireless connection, make changes to the router wifi settings, like change the wifi channel. The internal network stays up, and I can ping both the internal and external ip of the router, but not the fiber box. I have also had the same behavior with an Edimax Wifi AP and less frequently with a Edimax router (once every 1-2 days). I have done everything I can think of:-changed the wifi channels-changed the ip ranges, subnets, turned router DHCP off and back on-booted the fiber box-changed cables-updated all routers to the latest firmware, the network cards with latest drivers...and loads other things that I don't remember right now. For the wifi side of things, there are no other networks in range that could interfere. The same problem occurs on both my and wife's Win 7 laptops and on the iMac (latest OSX). Here's a fun detail: while the Linksys has lost its connection to the internet, I can still access the internet through the old Edimax router connected to the same fiber box, either wired or wireless.

I'm having a networking issue that I cannot resolve. My DirecTV HD DVR receiver (HR21-700) shows a working connection to both my network and internet. However, the STB services port (range of 27161-27192) will not connect through my router (linksys E4200) automatically or manually (Dtv error code 301). By connecting the receiver directly to my modem, the STB services port will connect as it should. I also have a XB360 (LAN), BluRay Player (LAN), two PCs, & Wireless Bridge connected with absolutely no issues. Each are manually configured with a static IP and the proper ports forwarded.I am STUMPED and FRUSTRATED to say the least.Other than the manual setup of these devices, my networking knowledge is not very broad. Are there any settings or configurations that I may be overlooking? The uPnP is enabled, NAT is enabled, and all firewalls are turned off.

I have an E900 I replaced an old Airport Extreme with. The reason was for increased download speed. The Apple router I used saw my work network and I could access files and printers; no changes to my Mac were necessary. It worked out of the box. The new Linksys has Internet connectivity but will not see my work network at all. I have looked into the old settings and cannot figure out how to make the new router see my network. I called Linksys but no dice. What settings need to be changed to see the work network? It is connected to the same ethernet cable as the other router that worked fine.

I am currently connecting my PC to a mobile phone as a Wireless Access Point to give that PC access the internet. I also have a small home network, with one other PC and a Game Console. I own a Linksys E900 Wireless-N300 Router. My problem is this. How do I share that internet connection with the rest of the home network? To the best of my knowledge its not possible to connect my mobile phone directly to my Linksys E900 Wireless-N300 Router.
So my alternative idea is to connect to the internet via one PC, set up that internet connection as "Shared." and then allow the other devices on the home network to connect thru this. My question is how do I set up my Linksys E900 Wireless-N300 Router to allow my other PC and game console connect to the internet? Bridge Mode? PPPoE?

I have 4 computers (3 laptops, 1 desktop) in a shared office. We get internet access using their wireless network. All works fine. However, I need to share a printer amongst all of the computers. The printer is LAN enabled and I would normally just put all the PCs on a hub, together with the printer and share it that way. BUT my question is can we access the internet using the wireless network and the printer using a separate wired network at the same time?

Recently we ordered a new Modem from Centurylink to replace an old one we have. (which ironically the old one's wireless is way better) Both modems work perfectly fine, and I've tried the same things with both to figure this out. I ran an ethernet to my gaming room, which is about 150 feet. When I connect my computer directly into the modem, my computer works fine. Initially, the PS3 worked, but when I switched back to the computer with the single Ethernet cable, I was getting an IP error. Every since then, the PS3 will not connect through Ethernet. (Wireless works, but its so far away the signal is weak)
So, I dug up my router, Linksys WRT54GL, plugged it into the ethernet that came from the Modem, (did all the steps in order multiple times), and no internet through wifi or ethernet on it. The lights and everything say there is ethernet and the WIFI/Ethernet are working, but there is no internet. All the wires are confirmed fine. I've tested them on other devices plugged directly into the modem. I tried the PS3 at the modem with 3 Ethernet cords as a test, It says there is an IP Address timeout error. Regardless of what I do, the PS3 won't connect via Ethernet. And without internet working on the Linksys router, Im getting about 15-25% signal from the Modem. (which is also wireless, if that has anything to do with the issue)
I need the router to do at the very least, WIFI. I really want Ethernet though so I don't lose much speed. (We are maxed out here at 1.5mb connection from Centurylink)
When it comes to computers, I'm advanced with them. When it comes to networking, I'm okay. I understand basic things, like accessing the router or modem through the browser. I can do the whole setup for WIFI. But when it comes to how the IP address, Static IP, etc., goes, im confused by them. So forgive me if I sound ignorant. I've looked for over a week on sites, and nothing is working. The router may be broken, im not sure. I bought it a few years ago and then didn't need it till recently. So its been sitting in a box.
All I know is, I have an ethernet from the modem to this room, the PS3 refuses to get an IP, and if I do it too much the PC gets an IP conflict. If I plug the Ethernet into the internet part of the router and do wireless or Ethernet, there is no internet coming out.

Orange sent me a replacement Netgear DNG1000 and from the moment I had it there was issues, if N mode was enabled and I had to set it to B/G only for it to have a stable connection, not a problem as I only use it for the internet. The range on it was roughly the same as the livebox. For a few weeks it worked fine until recently it started to go insane, on the main computer the wifi works most of the time with 80%-95% signal strength, and then every now and then it will suddenly lose communication with the router but act as if it was connected for 5-10 minutes, signal strength is still at about 90% yet I can't access the router or the internet. Wifi works fine at full speed on the stairs, drops to a few bytes per second on the landing and then increases back up to full speed in the room next to it. In the one bedroom the wifi works up until the door where it instantly drops from full speed to a few bytes a second. This drop off point is only a few cms, as in full speed at one place, move it back a few cm and it slows down loads, but I still get 4-5 bars on windows and -50 RSSI on inSSIDer, about 94% strength and a link quality which tends to fluctuate. What could be causing this, specifically the weird instant deadzones and randomly not responding.

I can connect with no problems through my ordinary internet cable but not when I instead connect it to the router and I put a cable between the router and computer. Then a red cross appears between my "Network" and my "Internet" and it says "there may be a problem with your domain name server" when I try to repair it. I can access the router settings by going to 192.168.1.1 but I don't know what to change. It's a Linksys WRT54GL and I'm on a windows vista. I've tried stuff like reseting the router and doing ipconfig /flushdns but no success.

A dialog box would appear asking for a username and password. Now it doesn't even reach that screen. It says that the connection timed out. I've tried Firefox/Chrome/IE10. To no avail. I'm having trouble connecting my 02 dongle to the internet using my router. My router is a TP-LINK MR3420 and my 02 modem device is E1752. I checked to see if the modem is compatible and it says it is. I went through the configuration that was given to me with the router and I tried using you tube but nothing. Do i need to get a static I.P address off my Internet provider? If I plug my 02 usb dongle directly into my computer it works perfectly and I got the router to work using a ethernet cable and plugging it into the WAN port at the back of the router but I would prefer to let it connect through the 3g port. I get a connection at 40% and 100 bytes are sent and some are received but the connection drops. Is it a problem with the connection? I will upload a image.
