Wireless Network Slow To Initialize In XP - Windows 7 Fine?

Mar 6, 2012

my machine is set up to dual boot Windows XP Professional Edition and Windows 7 Home edition. I had Windows XP installed on this machine first because it is 10 years old and I wasn't sure how well it would work with Windows 7. I decided to test out Windows 7 a few months after using Windows XP on here and noticed the wireless network was started right when Windows 7 loaded, where as in Windows XP it can take anywhere from 1-3 minutes for the wireless network to load. In this 1-3 minute time frame on Windows XP any browser or attempted connection to the internet 'hangs' and does not display a time out, it just continues to try and connect until the wireless icon finally shows in the taskbar

I have a Dell Inspiron 6400 running Windows Vista with a Broadcom 440x10/100 Integrated Controller.  I've had the computer for 5 years, and have always connected to the  internet using wireless with no problem.  Just moved to a new place, don't have a router yet, and now when I try to connect via the ethernet cable my internet is sooo slow, taking about a minute to load a page.  My roommate's computer runs great using the ethernet.

Desktop PC Internet Is Really Slow But All Other Computers Work Fine

Oct 23, 2011

A couple of days ago I bought a new desktop PC (Here is the link if anybody wants info on the PC [URL] but anyway, I'll get to my problem. My wireless router is downstairs in the living room and my desktop PC is upstairs in the bedroom. Theoretically, My PC's wireless card should be able to reach the router perfectly, being as I have several other PC's in the house that I use from my bedroom and the connection is 'Very Good' to 'Excellent'. Although with this new computer the connection's strength is very weak and it's so slow using the internet or trying to download things. It's internet is almost unusable. I've tried swapping the wireless card, but to avail. The connection is still awful.

Or of a way to boost the signal of my wireless card?

D-Link DIR-655 :: Wireless Stalls / Lags Constantly On Windows 7 - Wired Is Fine - REV-A - HW 1.35N

May 13, 2011

I have the Dlink DIR-655, Rev-A, HW 1.35NA Wireless Router Before you ask, I have reset the router to factory defaults, and reinstalled the latest firmware twice, most recently after trying everything else I could think of.I have Cable internet, ALWAYS using wireless, NEVER using wired except for the router installs, which worked just fine until I switched from my old D-Link router to this 655 one a few weeks ago. Now, very frequently, I will open ANY webpage, and the internet will lag, 5, sometimes 10 or 15 seconds and then suddenly it will work properly for a while... only to happen again a little while later - completely randomly it seems.I wired the router to the computer to check to see if the lagging still happened, and everything was fine.I am using a 1-year old Dell laptop, using Windows 7 Home Premium, 64 Bit, and the Network Adapter is Intel WIFI Link 5300 AGN with the most up to date driver confirmed.  Under the Advanced Tab for the Laptop's Network Adapter, the settings are as follows:

802.11n CHannel Width for band 2.4 - Value: 20MHz Only
802.11n CHannel Width for band 2.4 - Value: Auto
802.11n Mode - Value: Enabled

There are a number of other settings which I am confident are not relevant, but happy to provide The last setting is: Wireless Mode - Value: 6. 802.11a/b/g In the DLink Configuration, the relevant settings are:

802.11 Mode: Mixed 802.11N and 802.11G
Wireless Channel is on 10, so as not to use the most common "11"
Channel Width Auto 20/40MHz
DNS Relay Enabled
DHCP Server Enabled
Range: 192.168.0.100 to 192.168.0.199

[code].....

Under WAN, the Primary DNS Server numbers are showing and the Secondary DNS Server numbers are showing as 0.0.0.0 McAffee Anti-Virus is up to date and shows no viruses, nor to the Dlink Logs - McAffee Firewall is turned off, Enable SPI in Dlink Settings is turned on.this problem only occurred when I switched routers recently, the old DlInk router I had never had this issue.  And I am using a completely different network name with this new router to avoid any conflicts there.  And this problem does NOT occur when hardwiring the laptop to the router directly, it only happens via wireless.Storage of the router is fine, it is in the same spot as the old router was, not to hot, not too cold, it didn't eat any metal for breakfast and there are no MRI machines within 10 miles.

Belkin Basic USB Wireless Adapter / Very Slow Download Speed - Upload Speed Is Fine

Jan 11, 2011

Recently my desktop has experienced very slow download speeds (~0.11 Mbps), however the upload speed appears to be in line (~2.0Mbps). These numbers are taken from Comcast's speed test (my ISP). It is obviously a problem with my PC because everything else on the network (PS3, Laptop) have great signals with no problems. I just recently reverted the Desktop back to its factory state, and everything was working fine for a couple of months. The desktop in question uses Vista 32-bit and the Belkin Basic USB Wireless Adapter.

Connection To Wireless Router Is Fine But No Network Access?

Apr 11, 2011

I have recently purchased a new laptop (less than a week ago) and since purchase I have had the same recurring problem. Coincidentally, my wireless router is brand new also, and so it makes the situation even more difficult to eradicate. My laptop connects to the router wirelessly without a hitch, however, every five minutes or so, a small yellow exclaimation mark appears alongside the 'connection symbol' and it says there is either 'No Internet Access', or 'No Network Access', despite the fact it is connected to the wireless and has a full strength connection. However, my brother's laptop connects and surfs the web seamlessly, as well as the family desktop PC and various mobile devices. I am reluctant to return the laptop back to the store?

Sharing :: Windows 7 / XP Slow File Listings On Network Shares

Nov 2, 2011

Having got a new Windows 7 (64 bit Ultimate) PC, I decided to turn my old PC (XP Pro) into a file server. After much fun with Windows networking, I have one particular problem. Listing files on the server from the Win7 machine is ridiculously slow. A few directories have large numbers of files in them, around 10,000 image files. Browsing to one such folder on Win7, I have timed a listing and it took 48 seconds! That's a very long time to wait for a file listing. I have a network connection monitor running and it doesn't seem to be overloading the network- data was dribbling down the 100Base-T cable at about 200kiloBITS per second. Trying things the other way around, the same folder if placed on the Win7 machine and listed from the old XP machine can deliver a complete listing in about 5 seconds. I'm not sure which end has the problem; either the server is delivering file names very slowly or (my guess) the Win 7 machine is asking for them very slowly, perhaps asking for lots of crap that isn't needed like icons or file dimensions or something.

D-Link DIR-655 :: Download Speed Fine But Upload Speed Is Way Slow?

Mar 17, 2011

I live in the tampa bay area, I have bright house (BHN) as my service provider, which provides a Road Runner Lightning (40/5) package.  I previously used BHN's top tier (20/2) back in July (and prior) with no problems.

After converting to Lightning in August of this year (2010).  Of course, BHN (and every other provider) wants to force a modem/router down your throat, so I had them bridge it (in short, turn it into a dummy modem with no routing). I had an SMC branded modem gateway at the time.  I work from home 2 days a week (so I can spend more time with my kids during morning, lunch, right after work) and this requires me to use QoS to ensure my VOIP work calls don't get dropped, if the family is watching youtube videos or watching netflex.

My network was as follows SMC Modem >WAN IP>>WAN Port>>D-link DIR-655>>Switch Ports>PC1, PC2, PC3

Everything seemed fine (from a usability stand point) till about 2 weeks ago when my upload speed seemed to grind to halt.  Normally I was able to upload about 200-300K per second, and I noticed this dropped to about 45K per second during a drop box upload.   First thing I did was power cycle both my modem and router (in the proper/usual order).  After they both come up, I start using speed test to find out what my upload speeds were.  I was getting about 39Mbps down, but only .56Mbps up still.  I factory reset my router.... test, similar speeds.  Power cycle all computers (just in case), and then modem/router.  Tested, similar speeds.   Updated the firmware to the latest. Same issue

Called BHN customer service, they factor reset it, but it wasn't in bridge mode.  If I by passed the 655, in factory mode (non bridge mode) upload speeds returned to better than expected states.  If I bridged the cable modem, upload speeds seemed to crash.

Had BHN replace the modem, seemed fixed for a day, then issue came back.  Had them come back out and replace it again, this time with a Motorolla Surfboard modem... same issue.  Fine during factory reset, however after they bridge the modem, upload speeds were fine.  Told BHN I would take it from there.. Connected up the DIR-655, and upload speeds crashed again. (.6Mbps).  Called D-Link Support, and the Chinese English speaking rep seemed to not be listening to me and tried to have me adjust my MTU as well as Wireless settings.  Long story short... the rep was a level 0 id10t and I hope D-link will consider hiring better employees/contractors.  So I was all about to give up and replace it with a DD-WRT capable router (which it takes me a lot to want to swap hardware), when I discovered the wan shaping was on.  Which I thought to myself... nah... QoS has never messed up before... why would it be the cause.  Turned off wan shapping... and voila.  Issue seemed to be insta-resolved.

Unsatisfied with that... I decided to dig a lil deeper. I turned on Wan shaping again, but decided to set the settings manually instead of auto detect.

Here are the settings I used... (Advanced Tab>QoS)
Enable Traffic Shaping - Checked
Automatic Uplink Speed - Unchecked
Manual Uplink Speed - 5000
Connection Type: Cable or Other Broadand Network

Enable QoS Engine - Checked Automatic Classification - unchecked (this checked seemed to affect my upload speed by about 5-10% during testing) Dynamic Fragmentation - unchecked (this checked seemed to be the worse enemy for upload speed)

While I know I'm not any network guru (still have to use a subnet calculator for subnetting), I think I did a pretty good job drilling down the issue (once I got passed my service provider replacing modems).

Anyways, I've had overall good luck with D-Link products, even have a 5 port 10/100 switch (all metal) from 1998 that works great.  Hopefully, D-Link will just either put more documentation on the web, or hire better employees.

Cisco :: Re-initialize The DFM Database For CWLMS 2.6

Jan 29, 2012

We are using CWLMS 2.6 on a UNIX machine. And recently we changed the SNMP String to our network devices. One of L2 switches keeps logging the following message:

%SNMP-3-AUTHFAIL: Authentication failure for SNMP req from host 10.x.x.1

Where 10.x.x.1 is ciscoworks LMS server. I found a solution on many sites that suggest resetting DFM database. I stopped first the daemon manager and tried to apply the perl script:

perl dbRestoreOrig.pl dsn=dfmInv dmprefix=INV npwd=cisco

but it gives me the following error:

Can't locate CRM.pm in @INC (@INC contains: /usr/perl5/5.6.1/lib/sun4-solaris-64int /usr/perl5/5.6.1/lib /usr/perl5/site_perl/5.6.1/sun4-solaris-64int /usr/perl5/site_perl/5.6.1 /usr/perl5/site_perl /usr/perl5/vendor_perl/5.6.1/sun4-solaris-64int /usr/perl5/vendor_perl/5.6.1 /usr/perl5/vendor_perl .) at dbRestoreOrig.pl line 31.
BEGIN failed--compilation aborted at dbRestoreOrig.pl line 31.

CRM.pm already exists in the path ENV{NMSROOT}/lib/perl/db

At line 31 of dbRestoreOrig.pl – the error – I found the following:

push(@INC, "$ENV{NMSROOT}/cgi-bin/dbadmin/pdbadmin");
use lib "$ENV{NMSROOT}/lib/perl/db";

I gave the system the path of NMSROOT and run the script again but it gives me the same error “Can't locate CRM.pm”

Cisco :: Waiting To Initialize State In LMS 3.2

Jun 13, 2011

About 1-5 times per week I will find the jrm process showing as "Administrator has shut down this server". I have written a script that 2/day checks the status of the jrm process and if it is down, restarts it (pdexec jrm). About 25% of the time the jrm process will then show a status of "waiting to initialize". The only way I have found to recover it to shut down CiscoWorks and restart it (takes about 25 minutes). Why it would shutdown or how to get it restarted after the initializing state?

Desktop Getting 169.254 Even Though Network Is Fine?

Apr 23, 2012

I lost my internet connection after I set my system up for an image backup, left the house and returned. Here’s how my home network is configured:

Cable internet -> Cisco modem/wireless router combo -> Dlink wireless router-turned-switch -> my computer

My computer, which is hardwired, was coming up with a 169.254. My phone, iPad and laptop were still able to connect to the Dlink signal and surf the net with no problems. I connected the laptop to the Dlink via Ethernet – OK. I connected the laptop the Ethernet cable leading to my desktop – OK. So now I isolated the problem to my desktop. I rebooted, released and renewed IP and still 169.254. I went ahead to force a manual IP address and it worked! Reverted TCPIP back to “obtain address automatically” and got a 169.254.

Windows 7 Pro 64bit Machine - Wireless Connection Very Slow And Dropping Regularly

Dec 31, 2011

It's a Windows 7 Pro 64bit machine with a (newly installed) Asus P8H67 pro motherboard and an Edimax ew-7612pln pci-e card, the router is a thompson 585v8 router with the latest firmware on (upgraded as part of troubleshooting). I upgraded the wireless card drivers one time whilst it was disconnected, it appeared to work for a few hours but then dropped again it also went through a phase of connecting to the router as an 'unidentified network' with no internet access although I don't believe it was attaining an IP address. When it was connected the internet was pretty slow and anything like a file down load would knock it off completely. There were no errors at the time of disconnection in the event log (bar a DNS error or two saying it could not locate the website I was trying to get to before it failed), however the only information type events I noted were a few services stopping and starting and an odd one regarding the host not being able to find the 'master browser' which was identified as another laptop on the wireless network.

The machines are not in the same work group or in a domain, all other laptops and devices on the network work fine and are very stable - as was this one up until a couple of weeks ago. I've uninstalled a couple of pieces of software that were recently installed ; VMware player (which added virtual NICs upon installation and funnily enough made the wireless reconnect after a few hours of downtime upon installation...but the effect was shortlived) and some asus mobo utilities.
