Cabling / Cards :: Switch To Interconnect Exterior Cable To Interior One

Jul 28, 2011

I am designing a cabling system to interconnect all the buildings in my school.In one of the building, I have 2 patch panels and switch to interconnect cables that comes into the building with cables that runs to the rooms.From what I understand, connectivity should be something like this:

1. Exterior cables coming in through the entry point.
2. Exterior cables terminates at the back of patch panel.
3. Patch cables run from the front of patch panel to a switch.
4. Patch cables run from the switch to another patch panel which connects the interior cabling that runs to the wall socket in each room.

My question:

1. Which ports should I use on the switch to interconnect exterior cable to the interior cable? They should be a connection between the exterior cabling and the interior cabling and both terminates in the same switch, but different ports. How do you allow communication to happen?

2. How do connect all the buildings to the router that connects to the internet?

Serial Connection For Interconnect 5324?

Nov 16, 2012

I just bought this switch off Ebay and I can't seem to find anything online on the physical connection of this switch. It's not like normal switches where it just uses a ethernet type cable that goes to serial, it requires a female to female cable which does not exist anywhere so I ended up buying a gender changer for a normal cable I had but can't seem to get the prompt to come up. I'm using 9600, 8 data bits, no parity, 1 stop bits and no flow control. Do some wires have to be crossed a special way or something or do I need to type anything special in the console to get the prompt? I can't find much online on this switch. At least not as far as serial connectivity goes.

Cisco Switching/Routing :: Interconnect Between 2821 And HP 5412zl?

Jan 27, 2012

I  have a 5412zl 10.215.x.x/16 Most of the connections on this switch are  on vlan1. B9 is the port which is connected to a Cisco 2821 Router. The  port on that end is GE0/1. The port on the cisco side is not a trunk but  configure with an ip of 10.215.1.30/24 Its part of a some ip  access group. The network that i now sit on is a 172.x.x.x/24 (behind  cisco router, about 3 hops to that main 2821)We current  have a system on my side that talks to a server on the 10.215. that has  no issues. I'm trying to access some switches on the 10.215. and have  had no luck reaching them.

Here is the access list that i found that port is configured to use:

permit ip 10.215.0.0 0.0.255.255 172.18.0.0 0.0.255.255 permit ip 10.254.0.0 0.0.255.255 172.18.0.0 0.0.255.255 permit ip 10.215.0.0 0.0.255.255 172.14.0.0 0.0.255.255 permit ip 10.254.0.0 0.0.255.255 172.14.0.0 0.0.255.255 permit ip 10.215.0.0 0.0.255.255 192.168.2.0 0.0.0.255 permit ip 10.254.0.0 0.0.255.255 192.168.2.0 0.0.0.255 permit ip 10.215.0.0 0.0.255.255 192.168.20.0 0.0.0.255 permit ip 10.254.0.0 0.0.255.255 192.168.20.0 0.0.0.255 I  would think the first permit would allow me to get through to the  10.215 side but maybe i need to set something up on the hp size to let  it know how to get back? I'm very new to this stuff.

How to properly power down the Nexus 5000 and the fabric interconnect switches? I have looked up and down cisco's and google web for steps, but they are all coming back with the answer to just disconnect the power cables after you have power down all the windows os and exs servers. Before i do that, I just wanted to make sure that that's the correct way to do it or if there are actual commands that I will need to run on the devices to properly power down. Connect DSL Modem To Router And Then To Switch

May 3, 2012

I have a question regarding the network setup. I have 3 pieces of network hardware and a fast dsl connection. The hardware is:

- DSL Modem from my provider with static IP connection (CISCO - don't know the symbol)
- DSL Router (edimax ar-7084a)
- Switch (Hewlett-Packard JD871A)

Now the task is to create a LAN network so all my computers can talk together and have a internet connection shared between them.When I connect Modem to Router and then 4 CPUs to router, it is working fine. The problem is that the router has only 4 ports and that it is 100Mbit slow. I would like to use the HP switch for the LAN setup (1Gbit) and then connect the switch to router and router to modem. But it doesn't work   I cannot establish internet connection this way. I'm setting all the settings in my router but it doesn't work as it was in simple setup modem->router->cpu. when I add switch to this, the setup is going berserk.Problem is that I would like to create a LAN only between computers using switch. I have other computers that I want to conect to the router directly and don't see the computers using switch.

DLink WBR-2310 Router Don't See Modem But Switch Does

May 24, 2012

We setup a home network in our new house but we have a problem with limited connectivity in specific configuration.

There is few situations to describe the problem :

1. If I connect my computer directly to the modem I can access to the internet. (modem --> computer = internet OK)

2. If i connect the ethernet cable (in the wall) between my modem and RJ45 jack in the living room and connect my computer directly to the RJ45 I can access to the internet. (modem --> cat6 cable in the wall --> computer = internet ok)

3. If I connect my router directly (without the cat6 cable in the wall) to the modem and my computer to the the router I can access to the internet. (modem --> router --> computer = internet ok)

4. If i connect the ethernet cable (in the wall) between my modem and RJ45 jack in the living room and connect to router to the RJ45 and my computer to the router I CANNOT access to the internet. (modem --> cat6 cable in the wall --> router --> computer = internet access problem)

5. If i connect the ethernet cable (in the wall) between my modem and RJ45 jack in the living room and connect to a swith to the RJ45 and my computer to the switch I can access to the internet. (modem --> cat6 cable in the wall --> switch --> computer = internet OK)

With those tests I am not able to figured out what is the problem... router is working in situation #3. cable in the wall is ok in situations #2 and 5. How to make my router working when connected to the RJ45 jack in the living room.

There is my component :
Router --> D-Link WBR-2310
Switch --> Trendnet TE100-S5
Modem --> Thomson DCM475
Cable in the wall --> Homemade with 568A standard in both end.

Netgear FS726T Switch And SMC Cable Modem Connection?

Jan 27, 2012

I am relatively good at installing and troubleshooting smaller sized networks... I am having trouble with one of my customer's networks and I think I have the problem narrowed down. r issues.I have a customer with a FS726T switch and ~20 computers connected to this switch running DHCP assigned addresses.The switch is assigning addresses in the 10.0.0.xx rangehe customer currently has an old T1 line coming into a Cisco router, which then directs traffic to port 20 on the switch.The problem is, we are replacing the old T1 line with a newer 50mbps cable connection.The cable company pre-configured their router with a static IP address the 68.116.xx.xx range. The Subnet is also different than the Netgear's subnet. I would like to keep the old T1 connection in place. I believe they have data that needs to go to their mainframe/backbone server at corporate.

I cannot log in to the cable modem. IT is an SMC SMCD3G with a staic IP. I tried changing my PC's IP address to the same gateway but cannot get into the cable company's modem, even using a static IP with the same gateway as the modem's gateway address. I don't want to reset the modem/router and lose the cable company's settings.I am pretty sure for the devices to communicate, the following has to be true?:1) Cable modem and FS726T must be on the same 10.0.0.xx IP range?2) Cable modem and FS726T must be on the same 255.255.255.0 subnet mask?

Cisco WAN :: C2950 Vlan From Switch To Router For Cable Modem

Jun 25, 2012

The current setup is as follows: Virginmedia Superhub in modem mode connected to  one Cisco C2950 on port fa 0/23. The 2950 is connected to a Cisco C3550 over fa 0/24 via normal Cat 5e.Port fa 0/23 on the 3550 have a Astaro/Sophos UTM connected to it that acts as a Firewall/Wireless controller etc. The hitch, or maybe one of them, is that the 3550 and the UTM is on another floor from the 2950 and cannot be moved. The Virginmedia superhub can't be moved to the other floor either due to limitations in the cabling.What I'd like to achieve is for the UTM to pick up the public IP from the Virginmedia cable modem whilst no other devices on the Lan should be able to connect to the cable modem. All inbound/outbound internet traffic should go through the UTM for security reasons. The UTM have a number of available nic's that can be set to dhcp, static etc. I already have a number of VLANS on the router/switch and have half a suspicion that using another VLAN for this purpose might be the way forward but I'm not sure..

I have 3 pieces of hardware:

3. D-Link 8 port desktop switch

I previously used the DIR-615 with my high speed broadband connection. However I had to move to a new house and here I can only get WiMAX. I just plug it in and it'll connect automatically to the WiMAX signal. It has 2 LAN ports but no WAN port. From my understanding of networking, I have to turn off DHCP on my WiMAX modem, put it in the same IP range as my DIR-615 (192.168.0.100-199), and disable UPNP and NATPMP. After this I'm stuck.How do I tell my DIR-615 to use the WiMAX modem as it's WAN connection?Should I reserve an IP for the modem in my DIR-615?

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 3560CG Switch Terminate On Internet Modem

We have a Cisco WS-C3560CG-8PC-S (Cisco Catalyst 3560-C Switch, 8 GE PoE, 2 dual-purpose uplinks, IP Base image) switch which will be a core switch and the internet link from the ISP is terminated on a Modem. The ISP configured the internet modem and provided the details such as Gateway IP, Subnet Mask, DNS IP address, Usable IP Address Block,  to configure the switch, where ew have connacted the Modem. When, I verified the details, there were only 4 IP addresses available under Usable IP address block. Spoke with the ISP and they confirmed that they cannot increase the IP Addresses (some limitation on the Modem) in the pool and we have to do NATing at the switching (Which we can't do, because of IP Base image limitation). About the network, it will be a flat network with only one VLAN which is used for Wireless Guest Access.
