How To Subnet Within A Subnet
May 11, 2011
i'm doing a project for my networking class and i need to know how to do subnetting within a subnet. it's a network with three routers, each of them being on their own subnet, but there are multiple departments for a store that each will have their own subnet (sales, management, warehouse, etc.) within the network subnet

What I am trying to do is I have one switch with say a 10.1.9.1 sub-net I need to have one of the ports to be trucked with two vlans one for DSL and the other for a local connection with the sub-net of 10.1.5.1 both of the sub-nets are configured in the core as 9 and 5 so I have port 0 set up as a trunk and it is set up as ge-0/0/0.0 vlan_5, vlan_192 on the 10.1.9.1 subnet switch. The DSL is working but the local is not pulling a 10.1.5.1 IP and has no connectivity. Everything looks as if it is configured correctly but still the DSl is working but not the Local connection.

One is my HOME the other is my CARAVAN SITE. both networks are working fine independently, the problem occurs when i join the networks togetherI need to connect the said networks together in order to view my IP cameras which are dotted all around the campsite, i need to be able to view these from HOME.The problems i am having is DHCP servers are stealing clients from the other sides and directing them to the wrong gateway.please see below network map (these routers are all running DDWRT)Below is another network map which someone on another forum told me to do but its still not working. (DHCP servers are still clashing and still stealing clients)by the way, on both of the network maps all routers are connected with the LAN interface. someone told me to connect certain routers with WAN and it didn't work, or it was not explained correctly. Also please note that assigning clients with Static IP's is completely out of the question due to most of the clients being campers who come and go.

I have two routers in my office, each one having wireless extensions and its own DSL connection.I want machine on A subnet communicate with machine on B,I'll need some sort of physical connection (a cable? a new device?).Router A and B are typical home router with wifi extension: they only have a WAN port,I won't be able to let them talk to each other simpy by plugging an Ethernet cable between two LAN ports, since the two routers are on different subnets.

I have setup my network with two subnets (192.168.0.x and 192.168.1.x) and have a number of clients on both.I am using a Vigor 2750n router as my 'primary' router, and have a Server 2008 machine running RRAS as my other 'router'on the 192.168. 1. x subnet. On the 192.168.1.x network I have a server running DNS for local queries on that subnet and have 8.8.8.8 setup as a DNS forwarder. On the 192.168.0.x subnet I use the google DNS 8.8.8.8.I have setup a static route between the two subnets and am able to ping clients between each subnet. With regards to internet access, I am unable to get access to the internet from the 192.168.1.x subnet (no problems from 192.168.0.x subnet) and am unable to even ping a web IP address, and am wondering if I need to make any changes to the 2750's configuration to allow traffic from the other one to get out to the internet.

The ultimate setup thread mentioned only connecting routers together, and it would be cheaper (would it?) to get a new router and a switch instead of two routers of the same type.I admit I don't know much about networking. I tried Googling, but kept getting results about people asking what the difference between a switch and a router is, or how to set up two subnets on one router or switch. My current router is pretty old, its a V2 WRT54GS. I don't want to let it go but the lack of WiFi-n and Gigabit can get limiting, especially when sending large files across systems on a network or streaming video. However, I have another issue that wouldn't really be resolved by replacing it anyway, the fact that most if not all home routers have 4 Ethernet ports max. The amount of wired devices I use in the same area is increasing, and while I can switch some of them to wireless to make room for the wired-only ones, I would prefer not to. Some of these are multimedia or gaming devices and I would prefer the lower latency as well as higher LAN network speeds of Ethernet for them. I was told that I can connect a switch to my router and have everything act as if its on the same subnet. Will devices plugged directly into the router and those on the switch act as if they are on the same subnet and see each other without issue? Wouldn't this cut down on the speed of the devices if I have several plugged into the switch since they are sharing the single port the switch is plugged into the router with? Would it be better to get a switch with several gigabit ports and just plug everything into that for LAN speed? Its not like the WAN connection will come anywhere even close to 100Mbit, much less Gigabit, but would that still cause a bottleneck if several devices are trying to access the WAN over a switch that is plugged into a single port on the router, or no? Or would it be better to plug as many devices as I can into the router and the rest into the switch?
P.S. I use static IPs because I like to know which device has what IP to communicate with them directly if need be, and the WRT54GS has no way for my to reserve an IP based on port, MAC, or anything. Would that cause a problem? Is there any way to assign/reserve IPs on the newer routers (especially Linksys) with their stock firmware so I can switch to DHCP for guest devices?

I'm not sure if this is a possible config, but I have an ASA that I need to be able to SSL VPN to, and get an IP Address that is on the same subnet as my internal interface. The reason is, the person connecting in has a utility that does a broadcast on the internal network to discover the devices he is trying to connect to. Therefore, connecting over VPN and getting put on a different subnet wont work. In this case, I am going to start the ASA configuration from scratch. If its possible to do the above, what are the correct commands to configure it? I was planning to use 10.50.0.1/24 for the internal interface, and then hand out IP Addresses on that subnet to both the lan, and the vpn, This is an ASA 5505. Its on IOS 8.4.

I have old interface hardware with Static IP 10.2.2.200 and on the same switch I have computers with IPs of 10.4.1.0 If I change subnet to 255.0.0.0 old hardware with 10.2.2.200 will be accessible. The problem is that I would like to have 255.255.255.0 as subnet but it should still be possible to access 10.2.2.200. Can I add Static route for oldhardware in XP without adding gateway settings? The most simple would be to put all on same subnet but it is not possible due to a various reasons. The computers are running Windows XP

I have a cisco 877w and ive setup two ssids on it each with different vlans (I intend to use the zone based firewall to lock down the guest zone later)
Ive made a quick diagram of my network its a single server with 2 NIC's one for the internal lan and another for the external network (direct connection to the router) The server hosts 3 virtualized servers with the ecternal nic only shared with the tmg 2010 server.
So my problem is that when I connect to the 10.0.1.1 network as 10.0.1.2 I can only ping the internal network however the internal network is incapable of responding (pinging back) giving destination host unreachable. I know I need some kind of routing but im not sure where to apply it on the TMG server with the next hop as 10.0.0.10 or on the router.
The guest wifi is intended to bypass the network firewall and not allow access to the internal network. I've enabled ip routing on the cisco router and attached the config below.

I have been assigned to create a basic IP Addressing Scheme. The company has a single class B private address range of 172.16.11.0/16 and it needs to be divided into four subnets. They are all based on a single router.
Subnet A: 500 hosts
Subnet B: 200 hosts
Subnet C: 50 hosts
Subnet D: 20 hosts
How can I subnet them correctly and how would I make an addressing scheme for each subnet? (Host range, server, peripherals, gateway address? etc.)

I am designing a network right now that is going to have 356 devices. I need to use vlan separation with subnetting for a number of reasons. The first (and most obvious) is that there are 356 devices that will require an IP. Too many for one subnet. The second is that a good portion of the devices that I am using are a litlle to chatty with the broadcast traffic for my comfort. I have two subnets that are going to be specifically alocated to these chatty devices. Our switches are being provided for us by the client for unknown reasons. They are providing us with HP ProCurve E2810 switches which are layer2 switches.

I'm trying to connect two routers and create a subnet but failing due to a little knowledge but no real understanding! I've read the ultimate setup thread loads of times but can't get my setup to work.
Here's the setup I'm trying to build:
Internet -> Master ADSL modem/router (No NAT, no DHCP) -> Slave cable router (NAT, DHCP)
I want to connect 3 Xboxes to the master router with external IPs to avoid the whole "moderate/strict" NAT nightmare. Then I'll connect everything else (PCs, Macs, wireless devices etc) to the Slave router which will assign IP addresses and do the NAT thing. Both routers are Netgear N150s (master is ADSL, slave is Cable).
Here's what I've tried so far:
Master router:
All IP addresses supplied by ISP
Internet IP: xxx.68.160.143
DNS: xxx.xxx.3.xxx and xxx.xxx.6.xxx
Router IP: xxx.68.160.142
[Code].....

I'm currently taking a networking course and was having some difficulty answering the following questions and could use a little clarification.Question: When pinging a non-existent device on your subnet, why doesn't the source node issue a ICMP echo request. My thoughts on this was because there was not a receiving node therefore any ICMP packets were not issued.Question 2: when pinging another non-existent device but not on your subnet, why doesn't the source node issue a ICMP echo request.

I have a Motorola SBG6580 wireless gateway/router and am happy with it in general. I had a 192.168.2.n subnet with old Linksys but I find that I cannot change the MOT from its pre-set 192.168.0.n net to the ..2.net because it conflicts with a "private LAN" in the same range. How do I change the provate lan to, for example, ..9.n so I can use the ...2.n net? I'm running with the ..0.n now, just fine, but, I VPN into office and primary net there is ..0.n and so is confusing with IP shortcuts/conflicts. how to make the change?
