View 6 RepliesI have a network hard drive (NAS) in my LAN. I would like that a few computers in the LAN were able to only read but not write and the other computers could both write and read. Is there any way I could do this?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to see if I can fix my friend's NAS which apparently has some pretty important data on it that wasn't saved anywhere else. They actually had the Geeksquad look at it and they've come to the same conclusion I have so far, but I figured I would ask the internet before I gave the thing back to them and said Geeksquad was right.
Anyways, they have this 5 drive RAIDed NAS which apparently just stopped showing up on their network. I borrowed it from them to see if I could figure it out. It turns on just fine and my router assigns it an IP address, but the IP address just takes me to a blank LaCie dashboard screen. It's weird because it's clearly running it's web server because it's just a gray background with an empty white box and "(c) LaCie 2010" at the bottom. No content at all.
Additionally, I tried installing the LaCie Network Assistant on my home computer and it says it cannot find any network disks. I've tried the "wake up a device" where I enter the mac address, but that doesn't do anything.
All the lights are solid blue on the front and over all the drives so it doesn't appear a drive has failed or something. Even so, that wouldn't really explain the blank dashboard right?
I have a desktop and a laptop. I'm trying to share my external HD from my desktop, to my laptop. What I did was gave the local administrators group full share permissions to the drive, and of course the local administrators group also has full NTFS permission. That being said, I went to my laptop and did a Code:net use X: \mydesktopexternal /user:mydesktopuser PasswordExternal is the share name for the external HD on my desktop. The command worked successfully, however, I am still getting Access Denied when trying to get inside of this mapped drive. How and why does the command map the drive properly, using those credentials, but there's no access when trying to navigate to it? It works if I give Everyone full share permission, but I don't want anyone to just connect to it. Use password protection file sharing is enabled, but of course with "Everyone" given permission, that won't apply (at least to my knowledge).
View 7 Replies View RelatedIf Anonymous Disk Access is selected, read-only files cannot be deleted; nor can the file attributes be changed. This is true even if one attempts to connect as an administrator. Unchecking Anonymous Disk Access and logging on as an administrator fixed this problem for me, but I'd think there are 2 issues.
1. Anonymous Disk Access should allow deletion of ANY files. I would expect this to be a "wide open" setting.
2. If Anonymous Disk Access is selected, a valid login should take precedence.
I started getting into IT (as a job) a little less than a year ago, though I've been working with computers for close to 20. So networking was never something I was into while working on computers at home. I've been handed a significant position at work and I am learning a lot as I go. I want to know how to grant permissions for a domain user to a directory without adding the user to all of the sub-directories and directories. The only way I've figure thus far is to grant permissions to said folder, then inside remove the "inherit permissions..." but then I have to manually remove the permissions to every other sub-folder.I want to add a single path to a folder by adding single permissions to each folder until the directory in question is reached.

The problem we are experiencing is when a folder is created by user A, it cannot be moved by user B (and vice versa), as it says the folder is in use.The exact error is: Error Moving File or Folder.Cannot move <filename>: Access is denied.Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use.I have explicitly set full control for both users on the folder. The drive has 70GB of 500GB remaining. I have also used File Server Management to verify the files were not in use when they were being moved. The server is Windows 2003, SP2. Domain environment, with all relevant users having permissions on the folder, and the everyone account removed. Any other operation inside the shared folder works fine.

joed on \serverusers$ (H:)
When this takes place the users name is replaced with just Users Users on \serverusers$ (H:) (This can sometimes change to Z drive)
This then exposes all user drives. This does not run from a script but is used in AD under the profile drive letter. Have tried to:Rebuild profile in Active Directory. (New Profile)Re Build user profile on workstation>Rebuild Operating system on Workstation.Change drive on the user profile in AD letter H to Z.Have also tried on a different workstation.
I just updated Cisco software and my external hard drive is no longer recognized by Cisco. It is a Seagate drive that is listed on the Cisco tested - passed - approved list. It worked prior to this update. I have disconnected the drive. Reconnected it. Rebooted. Turned machine and router on and off and its still not recognized.
Model name: Linksys E4200
Model number: E4200
Firmware version: 1.0.03 build 14
Operating system: Windows 7 SP 1
Software version: 1.4.11266.0
Connection type (WAN): DHCP
I had an Iomega 1TB External Hard Drive connected to my E4200 router. I had shares confgured and they were properly running on the network.
As of yesterday, this all stopped working. The router does not see the drive; it is as though it is not plugged in.
I rebooted the router and it still does not work. I've connected the hard drive directly to my PC to verify that it works there, and it does. The router is running Ver.1.0.03 (Build 14) of firmware (the latest).
I have been trying to convince my bosses, the IT department, and others where I work, in a small call center, to switch to a different browser other than IE. The reason is IE times out on the techs a lot and freezes up constantly. I am able to use Firefox and Chrome at the lead station and do not have any issues, but the only browser currently allowed on the techs computers is IE. The reason I am getting as to why this is not possible is that with IE, IT is able to block certain options in IE from being changed such as proxy settings, add-ons, and advanced settings, but that these settings cannot be blocked or managed in firefox and chrome.

When I got the new router everything programed easily and I could retrieve files from my desktop and print remotely. Sometimes I would have to "refresh" before the laptop would detect the desktop but now it will not detect the desktop or the printer. I suspect that a Microsoft Update did this but just guessing. I went back and deleted the updates that downloaded around the time that this stopped working. I have tried every thing that I can think of to get it back working but can not get it fixed.

Because it can be fixed by rebooting, the IT person has filed it as low priority / given up on fixing it but I would really like to shut him up but I can't find the answer in google. His computer is Windows 2000 SP4 and the server is Windows NT 4.0.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a windows 7 desktop with an SSD and regular mechanical hard drive where I keep my data. I also have a laptop with a small SSD as well. I wanted to keep the laptop free of non-critical data so I decided to setup a file share between my desktop (Windows 7 home prem) and my laptop (Windows 7 pro). I was able share the files and navigate to my desktop through my laptop. I successfully mapped the folder as a network drive and all was well. Then I rebooted and I was disconnected from it, it remembered that it was there but I needed to manually connect to it and I needed to provide my login credentials. There is no password just a username.
What is causing this and is there a way to get around this? Also is there a way to set a timeout because if my desktop is not on and I want to use my laptop, the boot times are much longer compared to when I don't have the mapped network drive on my laptop at all.
There are 2 locations to choose from. One location requires me to run longer CAT6 cables. 7 of them. The other location requires me to run a longer RG6 cable. (the CAT6 runs would then be about the shortest they could get)So, I guess I need to know which can handle running parallel with power cables better, 25feet of RG6 or CAT6?The parallel with power cable is only for about 6-8 feet, but that's already more than it should be for CAT6.

View 1 Replies View RelatedMy laptop all of a sudden can't connect to my wireless internet connection and also seem unable to find any other wireless network but mine.I recently moved to a new flat, but brought my old modem/router with me (Scientific Atlanta 2434) and use the same ISP. Last week everything worked as a charm, but at the new location my laptop won't connect to my network, though I can connect to it through my mobile phone. My laptop only seem to find my own network ("Fidel") but with my mobile I can pick up 10-15 different networks from my flat. Connecting my laptop to the modem with a cable works all good. I tried to remove "Fidel" from my networks and added it again, typing wrong password gives a message saying "wrong network key" so my laptop and the modem seem to shake hands at least. Yesterday when trying I actually got connected, but the connection died after a few minutes and I wasn't able to connect again.Windows device manager display no errors nor conflicts around the ethernet controller or network adapter. Have tried to update the drivers through the device manager as well but it says they are up to date.Windows version is Windows 7 Home Premium.Don't know if my ISP uploaded new firmware to my modem when I connected it in my new flat, but on the other hand I can't see why this would affect my laptop's ability to pick up other networks in my house? The other day while I was browsing the internet all of a sudden my internet stopped working. I look down below and try to connect to the network again but it no longer shows my network anymore. I went into the room of my router and it looked fine. All lights were lit up like they should be. I turned on my Laptop to see if it was just a problem with my desktop but it's still not showing my network either.
I have restarted my router and reset it numerous times and it has still yet to show my network. It only seems to work if I connect it to my Laptop with an Ethernet cord. I have a Dell laptop running Windows 7. The problem is that every single time I try to connect to any wireless network, I get a message that says "Connecting to the network is taking longer than usual."The network almost always connects eventually (about 2 minutes), and once connected there doesn't seem to be any other problem. This has been going on for about 2.5 months. It began shortly after I restored the laptop to factory default.
