Cisco :: How To Find Attached Devices By MAC Address
Jun 21, 2011
We have a pair of Cisco 6513 switches, to which a selection of Wintel/Linux/UNIX servers are attached, but we have some connections that we can't identify and the data centre is a remote lights-out operation operated by a 3rd party in another country. determining which server NIC ports connect through (via patch panels) to which ports on the Cisco switches. In particular, I have a UNIX (HP-UX) server that has 4 dual port NICs (ie. 8 LAN ports), of which only one is assigned an IP address, but I can see that the other ports have connectivity at level 2 (HP-UX has a "linkloop" command that is analogous to an IP "ping" but takes a MAC address, and I get a response from each when I check from another server). This means that I know that there is a physical, electrical, and level 2 connection. The one server port with the active IP address set up shows in the switches address table ("sh mac-address-table") and it gives the port it is attached to. But the remaining 7 ports do not have IP addresses assigned and so are not listed in the table.

I have recently purchased an SG-300-52 Managed Switch. (This is the first managed switch I have used, so I am trying to figure out what I can do with it and how it works.)
I would like to know how to find out the IP address of each computer connected to each port of the switch. Is this possible and if so how can I do this from the browser interface?

I have installed my new E4200 and it works beautifully. I have several wirelss adapters and a few wired connections through powerline adapters. I also have a second VPN router attached to the 4200.I can see the wireless connected devices with the associated IP addresses. If I plug a laptop directly into the Cisco, I can of course see it.However, I can see none of the devices attatched to the powerline devices? I have a securty cam connected via the powerline and want to know the IP address. I checked with cisco technical support via chat and they said it is impossible. I have used 2 previous routers with the same configuration and can see all devices.

I have 2 networks in the house. The main network is called "FIOS", From one of its LAN ports, a cable runs to the power-line adapter #1) and supplies internet via power-line, to my office.Office network called "Leo". A Netgear router with Its WAN port connected to powerline and is getting its internet from Powerline adapter #1 I have devices attached to both networks, and would like them to communicate. (like TV on "FIOS" to communicate with NAS on "Leo")
Main network "Fios" uses Actiontec MI424WR Gen2. Router DHCP enabled: IP schema 192.168.X.X
Secondary network "Leo". uses Netgear power-line Router DHCP enabled: IP schem 10.0.X.X
So I have a TV which is a member of "Fios" , but would like it to access a NAS, which is attached to the Netgear router "Leo"

I recently installed some wireless IP cameras and when attempting to re-install a camera I went into the DHCP Client table to verify which IP a camera was using to set it up, but I could not...and still cannot see any of my cameras in the table even though I can access three of them directly through the IE web browser. I initially power cycled both the E4200 router and Motorola cable modem, and then later just the wireless router...but I still do not see the devices connected. I currently have 2.0.37 firmware even though I was told by Cisco support that there was a later version available, just before being informed that I do not have support available and could purchase it. I attempted to locate a newer version, but the online upgrade portion of the Cisco Connect software searched the net and then states that I have the latest version available. I also opened a Firefox browser to see if maybe my browser was causing issues, but the same limited table appears without all entries available. I even opened the Cisco Connect software on another laptop with the same limited results. Other than a factory reset, get me E4200 dual band wireless router to show all attached devices through the DHCP Client table as it previously did approximately two weeks ago?

I am having a major issue trying to connect my Windows 7 HP Netbook to my Xbox 360 over either Twonky/Serviio or Windows Media Centre. The Xbox just isn't picking up my computer, my homegroup recognises the Xbox and it is 'Allowed' to share media, but when I test my PC connection within the Xbox dashboard, it fails to connect to PC. My network is wireless. The strange thing is I have TwonkyServer Mobile running on my Android phone and that was found by my Xbox immediately with no need to change settings or search for devices. It streams media just fine from my phone. This leaves me thinking that it is an issue with my PC as opposed to my router, I have double checked my router settings (Sagem 2304), UPnP is showing as enabled, I've reset and unchecked/rechecked the UPnP but still not working.
My TwonkyMobileServer is also unable to find my PC server although I have been able to find my MobileServer in Windows Media Player and stream media from my phone.Windows Firewall has been disabled, I've also Uninstalled my antivirus software, Avast and AVG, although AVG doesn't seem to want to disappear that easily and is still lurking in my System Tray telling me i've 'Lost protection'...Norton Internet Security is also lurking around which is odd, I can not recall installing it! It doesn't seem to be a fully installed version and doesn't seem to want to be uninstalled. Could these AV software and supposed Internet Security software be holding me back? This leaves me thinking that my PC is holding back my Network. Is there any thing I haven't thought of? Would it be the Anti-virus leftovers ruining my streaming dreams??

i am setting up a new Monitoring System (CA Netvoyant). It has some default Cisco monitoring capabilities ( I believe these are soem standard MIBs). I am wondering how can I add more useful Cisco MIBs for the devices I have in my network. There are thousands of MIBs and it looks like it is not easy at all to find the useful ones. For example the MIBs that can give you Emergency and up to warning level information, cpu, memory, interface errors, module failures (in case of Cat 6500), FWSM, BGP, VPN tunnel status notifications. Is there a list of useful MIBs for each device type, like Cat 6500, ASA5540, Cat 3750-E etc depending on IOS Image? setting up the SNMP monitoring system?

I've had been successfully using a WRT400N to extend my wireless network as follows:
The WRT400N connected to my network via an Ethernet port in my kitchen. The cable ran down to a corner of my basement connecting to Verizon router that brings in our Internet, TV etc.
The Verizon router's poor location was a problem, and placing the WRT400N in the kitchen worked perfectly, providing excellent network access and Internet to wireless devices throughout my home. It worked fine for over a year.
Recently, we had a power outage which reset the WRT400N to factory settings. and I am having trouble getting it to work again. I set it up in the first place, but am now having difficulties. Clearly, I am no guru!
I tried to get it going again by: 1) plugging the WRT400N into a PC and giving it a new IP address that would not conflict with the Verizon router (both default to 192.168.1.1) 2) turning off DHCP, 3) renaming the router, 4) changing the router password, 5) setting up a WPA2 security key.
I then plugged the WRT400N back into the kitchen Ethernet port, but something is wrong. Wireless devices cannot find the WRT400N.
The good news is that I can "see" the WRT400N through any PC on the network via a browser and access setup, but the bad news is that devices cannot see or connect to the wireless signal.
When I go to "Status" it shows the IP address, subnet address and default gateway all at 0.0.0.0. On the SETUP page, it has the correct router address (192.168.1.9), and a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0. Not sure if it is supposed to be this way...

I have an AP541N-N-K9 Dual Band Access Point which I'm having some issues with. We have a few users with Android and iOS devices and they want to connect to our corporate network but when we configure the wireless network details in both OSs none of the devices get an IP address. We have an MS AD/DNS/DHCP infrastructure. On looking at the logs of the access point I can see the devices successfully authnticating but then I see the connection being disassociated and deauthed. A few seconds later the device attempts to get an IP address again and the same thing happens again. This loop just keeps on going forever. If we connect to the AP with an MS OS everything is fine. [code]

we use LMS 4.2.1 and we noticed a strange behaviour when starting a discovery. From aprox. 160 devices some devices are displayed as IP Address instead of hostname. Every device is DNS resolvable and has a value for "hostname". I´ve tried every possible option in the global discovery settings but some devices have the IP instead of their hostname. how to fix this?

I've came across IP address that aren't enough for some users in the company. The IP addresses are more than enough to cater to the user's notebook or PC. However, some users does not know that there are actually limits to the IP we have, so quite a number of them actually uses their mobile / pads to tap the company's wireless.
I was wondering if i could restrict that particular user from tapping onto the network. I know it sounds a bit impossible because DHCP doesnt have that smart function to block whoever we sees deemed as a "nuisance".

I have an AT&T Router that is my gateway to the internet, I have no access to it. I do have the inside ip address of it which is on my private LAN. Just for shiggles we will call it 10.25.240.1 255.255.248.0. That is my gateway address for all of my current devices.I have this shiny new ASA that I want to throw in there to eliminate a proventia and a sidewinder.
The diagram shows two stacks, these are my virtual server clusters with 3560X switches with the vlans configured, and several more switches all configured with vlan 832, connected to a 2950, which is connected to my internal 2600 router. I have 4 Vlans running on 4 different ip ranges, all controlled by the internal router, with only one vlan, let's say 832 that is trunked to the outside world. That vlan has 172.16.1.x 255.255.0.0 network attached to it. All is well, and traffic is routing behind the internal router, but I cannot seem to figure out how to get the traffic to pass thru the ASA. [code]

I'm trying to set up a new Cisco SF500-24P switch for our new Polycom IP phones but I'm having some trouble configuring them. It seems a fairly basic setup - We have a Cisco 2800 series router which is configured in a router-on-a-stick scenario to give DHCP addresses to two vlans, '1' for data and '20' for voice...
ip dhcp pool DHCPROUTER
network 10.10.0.0 255.255.255.0
default-router 10.10.0.1
dns-server 10.20.124.200 10.20.124.201
[cod]....
The switch worked practically straight out of the box- when I connected a PC or a phone into it they both got addresses in the 10.10.0.0 range and both worked fine. In the web interface I then set the Voice VLAN ID as 20 and as soon as I did this the phones can no longer get addresses from DHCP (although PCs can). The switch and the phone display both show that the phone is in VLAN 20. All ports are members of VLAN1(native, untagged) and VLAN 20 (tagged) and the port connecting to the router is trunked, as are the others. Also, I can ping 172.16.0.1 from the switch so there is no routing problem, although I did try using the switch as a DHCP relay to 172.16.0.1 but still no luck.I'm not sure how relevant this is but one thing I noticed is that data going to the router untagged (and therefore in VLAN 1) gets through but if I tag it with VLAN 1 then it doesn't.

I have recently had to rebuild the cookie information for a cisco 877 series router due to it being erased by an electrical surge.
I've successfully got it running again by copying the cookies from an identical router (obviously changing the serial numbers and so forth so it passes its verification checks).
The last piece of information I need is the Chassis MAC Address. I don't want to use the one from another router since there will probably be conflicts.
I tried following this Field Note, even though it isn't specifically for my model and it didn't work.

I have been working nicely with an industrial scanner that runs on Linux, but the harddrive has become corrupted and I need to get it working again. The problem is that the main PCB has a realtek chip which I believe has the most basic webserver abilities that is used in the most basic way possible. To use it ARP commands were used to assign an IP address to the chips MAC address e.g. something like: arp -s 192.168.2.5 00-05-a4-00-a8-f8(the actual MAC address was lost along with the HD)So now I'm starting from scratch in XP, how do I find the MAC address in the first place?
