Cisco Infrastructure :: Wastefulness 3845 Fan Module Required

May 3, 2011

We had a fan fail on our 3845 edge router. No big deal; the other two fans kept the temperature easily within spec, and the module is a two minute hot swap. I opened a ticket, they sent me a replacement. Simple. (In fact, the router install docs note that the fans are essentially a "consumable" part, and will fail within a few years, depending on how hot and dusty your environment is.)

The fan module is actually the whole face plate of the router, blue plastic with a steel backing, status LEDs, and the three fans. That is all fine. But, Cisco won't take the failed part back for refurbishment, which in this case would be simply to replace the fans!

The replacement part came with the standard Cisco return packaging: a sticker with an RMA #, a "manual" paper UPS label, and instructions to use their on-line tool [URL]. But, when I entered the RMA number, I got a pop-up saying it was invalid, and I should call Cisco Asset Recovery, whose 800 number is also on the sticker.

They told me that this part is not returnable; that the RMA is only to ID the shipment so they can confirm I got it. They told me to just throw it out. They would not provide a printable return shipping label.

I'd feel bad throwing out even the substantial cardboard and foam packaging of this part, let alone the assembled unit!

Hasn't Cisco heard that there is a general industry movement to cut down on electronic waste? With the removal of six screws, I could swap the failed fan out of this assembly and replace only the fan. I'm glad Cisco didn't ask me to do that level of repair, but I certainly think they should -- I'd assumed that the replacement unit I'd received was a return "refurbished" with new fans.It seems a complete waste to just chuck out this whole thing.

Heck, even the tiny power supply bricks for the Aeronet APs have a little "no trash" sticker on them, with a link to [URL]. Why do they just dispose of router faceplace assemblies when the only issue is a fan that was expected to fail in the first place?

Attached photo shows the 3845 front piece, which is the fan assembly, and the package the replacement came in, which could be used to return this part, and then be reused. For comparison, the little black thing in front is an Aeronet 1131 power module, which has a Cisco Recycles sticker.

Cisco :: How To Swap An Extension Number

Dec 24, 2012

I'm working with a Cisco Unified CM 7.0There are sevral ip phones in the place.ach phone has a 3 digit extension tied to it. no matter where on the network that phone is plugged in that phone has the same extension. This is a problem because one phone (extension 134) is damaged and was swapped out with a phone that has extension 102. I want that phone that has extension 102 to have the extension 134 instead. So that is my problem. I must say I am merely a CCNA and I have no idea about this voip stuff. I thought it was a simple log in to the server and make a single change. boy was I wrong. I clicked on call routing, then I clicked on Directory number and I got a list of all the DNs. I then click on extension 102 and 134. I noticed the MAC of the respective phones was in a field titled associated devices. I then dissociated both phones thinking I could just associate the appropriate phones next. as soon as I hit save that entire section disappeared. Now those extension aren't tied to any phone and once more those phones now have no extensions. I am freaking out because I can't undo this. I've clicked on literally every single option inside this server. I am in way over my head. I will include a picture to illestrate what I am talking about.

Cisco LAN :: 6509-e Best Way To Swap Out Supervisor Module

Mar 28, 2012

We have a 6509-e (WS-C6509-E V04) with (4) (WS-X6148-GE-TX) 48 port modules and a supervisor 32 (WS-SUP32-GE-3B).We purchased a supervisor 720 (WS-SUP720-3B) and (2) (WS-6708-10G-3C) 8 port fiber modules and (1) WS-X6748-GE-TX)48 port module to add to the switch. My question is what is the best way to swap out the supervisor module? Can the SUP720 be added as a standby module so that the config can be transferred? Probably a long shot. Is there anything in this swap that I should be concerned with? The other three modules should be pretty straight forward.

Cisco Switching/Routing :: C3560 Swap Out Not Ping Across Network

Jun 17, 2012

Had a switch die over the weekend, a c3560, per our normal procedure I pulled the hardware put a very basic config on it(vlans, portchannel, uplink ports, ip of management vlan, con and vty security, snmp, enable secret, and hostname).  Then I use solarwinds orion to upload a copy of the old config to bring the switch back to the same state as the one that failed.  Its a system that has worked for us 3 or 4 times in the past.  But this time when the base config was on the box it couldnt ping across the network.I have tried clearing the arp cache and the dynamic mac tables, i verified the routing tables and even removed the 10.1.185.128/27 route and re-added it, saw the routing update go across to the other 65k, tried bouncing the edge switch(i cant bounce the 65k's), took down the po between the edge and 65k.

TEGs80G - Swap Unmanaged Devices With More Expensive Cisco Devices?

Jun 1, 2012

Currently my home network is being switched via TrendNet TEGs80G unmanaged gig switches. I have been using them for about a year now with no issues. As my home network becomes more advanced, I recently just added a Cisco ASA5505, I am thinking about swapping those unmanaged devices, 4 of them, to managed. I was looking at the Cisco SG300-10 for upstairs, and a 16 port variant for my main core. These devices do not support full Cisco IOS cli, but they are manageable with a rich feature set nonetheless. My question is, should I swap the unmanaged devices with the more expensive Cisco devices, or just keep what works and save the money until I really need to spend it. As previously stated, my home LAN works just fine as it is, however my WiFi, NTV550s, server and workstations are all on the same network. Probably not the most secure but it is what it is without VLAN support.

vc-class atm ATM
vbr-nrt 44096 44096 1
oam-pvc manage
oam retry 3 10 1
encapsulation aal5mux ip

That worked fine for the first one with the NM-ATM-DS3, however, using NM-1A-T3/E3, it seems that I'm restricted up to 40700 kbps PCR/SCR:

router(config-vc-class)#vbr-nrt ?

I tried to look for some reference but couldn't find... Is there a way I can have a full DS3 with this card?

Cisco WAN :: T1 Cards In 3845?

Apr 21, 2013

I am replacing our core router, which is a very old 7204VXR, with a T3 card in it.  We are using it to terminate about 10 point to point T1's.  It is also the central gateway for our entire network.

I am planning on replacing it with a 3845, and an NM-1T3/E3 card for my DS3.  I think I've got that part worked out.

My real question is concerning future upgrades.  We are trying to convert many of these point to point connections to Metro Ethernet, and get rid of the huge DS3 cost.  When that happens, I'll probably have a handful of point to point T1's left over (maybe 2-6 of them).  So, what I need is a good solution to terminate those 2-6 PTP T1's in my 3845.  In the past I have just been using the old WIC-1DSU-T1-V2 cards to terminate my T1's.  I am looking for a solution that won't break the bank.  I looked at both the HWIC-4T1/E1 and the NM-8CE1T1-PRI cards (which terminate 4 and 8 T1's), but they are like $4,500 and $8,500 respectively.  That's way beyond my budget for these.  I definitley don't need a card that will do PRI's (DSP's etc.).  I just need it to terminate plain old point to point T1's.

So it may be that I'm just looking at the wrong cards.  Or maybe the make cards that will go in the back of the 3845 that will house 2, 4 or more WIC slots, and I could just use WIC-1DSU-T1-V2 cards?

Cisco WAN :: Installing New CF In 3845 Router?

Mar 24, 2011

I am installing Cisco blank CF upgrades (double the capacity of the CF that came with the router) in Cisco 3845 routers and I cannot get the IOS to load.

Network security requires tftp be disabled, so I am limited to xmodem.  Slow, but it works. I know the IOS download is good, because I can load it on the CF that came with the router.

I can install, format and read the new flash.  But the download locks up and bombs about 1/3 of the way through.

Note:  CF that came with the router was "C" so I used the format flash: command.  The new flash reads the same as the old, except that there is no file IOS loaded.

I've never had an issue upgrading an IOS, but this is my first shot at installing on a new CF.
