Cisco Routers :: RV042 Does Not Load Web Interface / VPN Stops Working?

Aug 12, 2011

We bought an RV042 at the end of June. It is used as a gateway and VPN router. DHCP server is disabled and all IPs are configured manually.Every once in a while (Tuesday night, then Friday night - yesterday, it has hapened once or twice before that) the router appears to restart (see log below) then comes back up with system time of Jan 01 2010. At this point the router will no longer load its configuration page ( and VPN connection to our customer in Africa drops. However, devices behind the router can be reached and can access the internet. The only way to fix this is to power cycle the router at which point everything starts working flawlessly again. The PID VID is RV042 V03 running firmware v4.0.3.03-tm (May 12 2011 21:27:37). Our RV042 is a newer one with Cisco SMB Router branding not the older Linksys branding.
From the log when the router reboots:
Aug 12 22:38:42 2011VPN Log(g2gips0) #141: retransmitting in response to duplicate packet; already STATE_QUICK_I2Jan 1 01:00:05 2010System Logheart : System is upJan 1 01:00:13 2010System LogWAN connection is up : gw on eth1Jan 1 01:00:15 2010VPN Log(g2gips0) #1: [Tunnel Negotiation Info] >>> Initiator Send Main Mode 1st packet
I looked at the log more and all the usual messages assosciated with VPN being established are there - the last thing in the log before the router coming back up again is:
Jan 1 01:03:49 2010VPN Log(g2gips0) #4: [Tunnel Negotiation Info] Quick Mode Phase 2 SA Established, IPSec Tunnel ConnectedJan 1 01:03:49 2010VPN Log(g2gips0) #4: [Tunnel Negotiation Info] Quick Mode Phase 2 SA Established, IPSec Tunnel ConnectedJan 1 01:03:49 2010VPN Log(g2gips0) #4: sent QI2, IPsec SA established {ESP=>0x575a01c0 <0x6534ae4e
So it even claims the tunnel should be up but I can never reach anything on the far side.

Cisco Routers :: RV042 Port Forwarding Stops Working When Firewall Is Enabled

Jun 4, 2013

I have a RV042 router on a single WAN and an internal LAN. I have configured port forwarding as follows: HTTP[TCP/80~80]->[TCP/443~443]->[TCP/143~143]-> SSL[TCP/993~993]-> SSL[TCP/587~587]->
Everything works just fine when I have the firewall DISABLED. However, when I enable it the behaviour is erratic. 1 out of 10 attempts to connect to ANY port forwarded works. Almost all attempts time out. Notice that this happens even if using only the default firewall rules (which should be bypassed by the port forwarding as I read in other posts).
My second try was to create firewall rules manually, overriding the default ones. I tried adding rules from source WAN1 (where my connection is) to ANY and to SINGLE IP's on every port. Nothing seems to work.
I don't know what I'm doing wrong, this is really bugging me. I had to turn the firewall off so we can access our servers from outside the office. This shouldn't have to be done.
Just found out that my firewall is getting LOTS and LOTS of Blocked - SYN Flood entries. I think this is why we are having trouble with the firewall. Could this be the problem? I have no idea where all these SYN packets are coming from since they appear with spoofed IPs or come from different bots all over.

Cisco Routers :: RV042 Load Balance Not Working Correctly

Feb 8, 2012

We have an RV042 on firmware version and 2 ISPs:
WAN1 = Telepacific T1
1.5Mbps down and 1.5Mbps up
WAN2 = AT&T U-Verse
12Mbps down and 5Mbps up
I have it set to Load Balance, Primary WAN = WAN2
Network Service Detection enabled, only pinging the Remote Host of and set to Generate Log
Bandwidth is set to:
WAN1 = 1000Kbps upstream & downstream
WAN2 = 5040Kbps upstream & 12000Kbps downstream
It seems to pick WAN1 a lot of the time.  Do I have something setup wrong?

IPSec Tunnel none used

Every day or so the Router becomes unresponsive to the HTTP mgmt interface, as well as it no longer offers DHCP services.then this happens the only remedy is to power reboot.

Everything comes back online just fine, however, the LOGS are initilaized so no data to figure out what`s going on.My next step is to setuo a syslog server and have the logs copied out.(  No, I have no Torrents running at all, but I do have several devices like AppleTV, PS3s etc that run streaming Video plus I have the SPA3102  )

Cisco :: Asa5010 Interface Stops Working?

Mar 5, 2012

I have a cisco asa 5010 where, during the process of configuring, the outside ports become down/down. The /0 port won't even reactivate after cycling power on the unit.Port /1 is the inside interface and it is not affected by the problems.I switched the outside port to port /3 and it worked for awhile then it stopped working. I switched it to Port /2 and the same thing.Port /2 and Port /3 are on after a power recycle but shut down completely (down/down) during the reconfiguration. It seems like a hardware failure, but I'm wondering if it could be anything else.

Cisco Routers :: RV042 Stops Passing Traffic On WAN

Feb 12, 2012

We have a managed service provider voip network that requires us to use our own router for the data network. We wanted to use the RV042 for it's easy vpn setup. After installing it worked great for about 10 min. then the WAN port stopped passing traffic. 3 min. later it started working again. We tested the RV042 on a different network and it works fine. We tested an older Pix on the managed network and that works fine. But the RV042 will not work on the managed service provider voip network. The service provider says that on their end it shows our WAN port going up and down.

Cisco Routers :: RV042 Slows Down And Finally Stops

Dec 20, 2011

I recently took over at a company as IT Manager.  All through my career I have heard about the quality of Cisco equipment.  Over the past few years I have used a few different Cisco products with good success.  When I took over they were using an assortment of old D-link DI-604UP's & DI-804HV routers.  The problem is that most of the DSL Internet connections now are faster than the 10 megs that these units WAN connections support.  Since they were working fine other than that I felt that replacing them with the RV042 would be a good step.  So far I have purchased 6 & implemented 5 of them.  The sites vary in number of network devices from 10 to about 50.
The problem is that 4 of the 5 routers start to slow down & finally stop responding after a period of time.  If I unplug them, count to 10 & plug them in again they work fine again for a period of time & then quit.  The length of time varies between sites & even varies on the same unit.  They may go for 2 days or 2 weeks.  I never know what I'm going to get.  When they go down I don't even have local access to them.  It's like they overload & can't accept any more data.  I can't tell you what version of firmware they originally had but I can tell you I had upgraded 3 of them to version & then to version  I reset & manually re-entered all the settings after I did this.
I have read through the posts & have changed the MTU settings & tried disabling the SPI firewall setting to no avail.  The D-link routers ran flawlessley until I replaced them & have done so since I put them back.
I now have over $1000.00 dollars worth of routers that I can't use.  I have a boss that is on me because I talked him into spending the money when the $200.00 dollars worth of routers I replaced were working fine.
I have 10 locations to upgrade the total infrastructure in.  Routers, switches, etc.  If I don't get this resolved quick there is no way in the world I be buying any more Cisco equipment.

Cisco Wireless :: 2960G / AIR-AP1142N-E-K9 Ethernet Interface Stops Working?

May 13, 2012

I installed two AIR-AP1142N-E-K9 access points, running a fairly simple config, WPA2 PSK, with AES cipher, both the same SSID.The two access points are connected to Cisco 2960G switches, which are in turn connected to each other, again without any fancy config options, no VLAN's ed.
After a random while, varying from 30 minutes to 15 hours, the access points will stop sending/recieving traffic on the ethernet interface. The units don't stop at the same moment, this also varies seemingly random. It's not related to load or the amount of clients (1 to 15).Only turning on one unit doesn't make any difference.
The units keep sending out their SSID, you can associate to them, but the DHCP requests aren't passed on to the DHCP server which is connected to one of the 2960G's.If you wirelessly connect to the AP and set a manual IP adress you can reach the webinterface and telnet/ssh to the access point. The ethernet link is reported as being up on the access point. Also the switch reports a link on the port to which the access point is connected.Resetting the link does have no effect. The log doesn't mention any errors or warnings.Power cycling or reloading the access point will put it back in working order for a varying amount of time.
Access point version:
Cisco IOS Software, C1140 Software (C1140-K9W7-M), Version 12.4(21a)JA1, RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc1)

Cisco Routers :: RV042 VPN Vs Load Balance

Jun 6, 2011

I have problem with VPN and Load Balance at the same time.VPN (Gateway to Gateway) between two RV042 routers is working fine with only one WAN or two WAN's with Smart Link Backup. If i switch to Load Balance communication through VPN is almost impossible.
I have postgres server (port 5432) in first location and clients in another. Clients cannot connect to server or lose connection after while. This is example, but every communicaton except ICMP over VPN with Load Balance enabled is faulty (file sharing, RDP...). Everything works fine using public IP and port forwarding or VPN with only one WAN.
If i understand it correctly Protocol Binding should affect only "normal" communication (outside of VPN), but it looks like VPN communication is also divided between WAN1 and WAN2. Of course this cannot work this way because VPN works only with one WAN.

Another question - is it possible to bind communication TO selected target port with RV042 Load Balancing to selected WAN?

Cisco Routers :: RV042 Both Failover And Load Balancing?

Jan 27, 2012

We are looking at purchasing and RV042 soon and have one cruitcial question. I am looking at having two internet connections running into the RV042. The only load balancing is going to be that all the VOIP traffic will go through one connection (eg WAN2) and then have all other traffic (such as web and email) through WAN1.
I am looking to have it so that if one of the internet connections goes down then it will failover EVERYTHING to the one that is working so both the VOIP and all the other traffic share the same connection until both WANs then go back online.

Cisco Routers :: Configured RV042 To Load Balance 2 WAN

Mar 16, 2013

I configured a RV042 to load balance 2 WANs. It appears to working well but I would like a 2nd opinion as to whether or not I chose the proper settings to accomplish the task.
1. WAN1(ISP1) is the existing internet connection(1.5mb T1). I have a block of static IPs with ISP1.
2. I added ISP2 to the RV042's WAN2 connection to increase bandwith (10mb). I only have one static IP on ISP2.
3. I want everyone on this router to use WAN2... well... almost everyone... for the most part.
4. I want to keep WAN1 active on this router because there will be periodic inbound connections using static IPs (from ISP1) that are setup with one-to-one NAT. I also have a voicemail system that needs to continue to use ISP1's email relay (SMTP,25).
Anyway, I was able get the outgoing traffic that had to remain on WAN1 working with protocol binding. In order to get the router to use WAN2 for pretty much everything else, I set it for load balancing and set "Max. Bandwidth provided by ISP"  for WAN1  up & down kbits/sec both to 32 (very low). I left the WAN2 up & down settings to the actual speed of WAN2.
The result is very low traffic on WAN1 and lots of traffic on WAN2 which is what I wanted. Did I do this right? Is there another preferred method to accomplish this.

Cisco Routers :: RV042 Link Backup Versus Load Balance?

Nov 14, 2011

We have 2 dsl lines coming in and the modem is in bridge mode while the router handles the pppoe information. Each line is 6mb down and .5 mb up. It's ****, yes I know, but this is pretty decent for a small town in the country. To double our bandwidth, I put it in load balance mode. When load balance, I get anywhere from 9-12 down and .8 up. Here's where it gets tricky.
When anything is uploaded, the speed drops from 9-12 down and .8 up to about .2-.7 down and .2 up. I realize that we will lose some down and up speed but I wouldn't think it would be this drastic. Is this normal? When they upload to a specific https site (file is about 50mb), it never initiates the upload. If I switch it to Link Backup, it will upload fine. I still lose the speed but at least it does something. I've read that some https sites have issues with grabbing data from multiple IP's so I figured this is the case since it's a medical site that was probably developed in house. Is this true?Does protocol binding work in Load Balance mode? I binded all http and https traffic through WAN 2 interface however, when I do a speed test or check my external IP, it is not indicating the WAN 2 IP address.  Is this a common issue in rv042's or is there a firmware update that solves all these issues?

Cisco Routers :: RV042 Dual-WAN Threshold Based Load Balance?

Sep 19, 2012

I have an RV042 (it's old, silver/dark grey plastic front one) w/ firmware
The reason we bought this (long ago) was to balance two WAN connections, one with unlimited data and one capped monthly.  It did that once, but for a couple years both connections have been unmetered so it's just been balancing them 50/50.  As of today one WAN connection (the new much faster one) is back to being metered but I can't figure out how to configure the RV042 as it once was to prefer sending traffic over the slow, unmetered connection first, and only use the faster metered connection when necessary.
It's been a long time and honestly I only vaguely remember the ability to prioritize a connection based on % of bandwidth used so that all traffic would go over the unlimited connection 1st until it was flooded, and only then fall over to the metered connection.  This is totally different than the weighted round robin, or smart link backup.
I found this 3rdparty forum post that supports that vauge memory and suggests this was eliminated between firmware 1.23 and 1.3: [URL] Is it possible to replicate this functionality with the current firmware? if so how?  If not, how to do roll back to firmware 1.23?
It sounded like perhaps I could assigned WAN1 a bandwidth of 100000 (even though it's really 1500) and then assign WAN2 a bandwidth of 1 (even though it's really 20000) and the result might be the prioritization I'm looking to achieve...  but I feel like I'm stumbling in the dark at the point.

Cisco Routers :: RV042 Load Balance Protocol Binding Not Failing Back

Mar 6, 2013

I am trying to make this router prefer Wan1 for outbound while listening to both WAN ports for Inbound. I set it to Load Balance mode and added in a rule for Protocol binding:
All Traffic( TCP & UDP/1-65535)> ENABLED
This says bind all Outbound traffic  to anybody to WAN1
My Wan 2 connection is over satellite so it is easy to tell if a ping is going over Wan2 because the latency is >600mS
If I start a continuous ping to outside site - eg then if I Fail WAN1 I see the ping latency Jump from 30mS to 700mS  as it starts to use Wan2. If I restore the Connection to Wan 1 then the pings stay on WAN2 - seemingly forever. If I stop pinging for 30 mins then a restart of pinging does use Wan1 - so it fails back eventually If I restore Wan1 and then remove Wan2, it fails back right away
My problem is with our VOIP which uses a connection keepalive  so there is no real downtime for the router to release the path to WAN2 should it fail over how I can force the router to fail back to Wan1 without removing Wan2?

I am using a RV110W with the latest firmware I have some port forwarding configured, which normally work. But sometimes, all port forwarding stop working. Everything else continues working normally, just all port forwarding don't work any more. I tried disabling the port forwarding and enabling them again, this doesn't work. Also disabling the firewall completely does not work. You have to reboot the router, then everything works fine again. When I make a portscan from outside with a "fresh" started router, the forwarded ports are open. When the error occurs and I make a portscan from outside, all ports that should be open (and have been open before) are closed.

Cisco Routers :: RV220 Host Name Resolution LAN / WLAN Stops Working?

Sep 11, 2011

I'm running a Windows Server 2008 R2 connected via cable to my RV220. The server is hosting several websites running in separate virtual machines. These websites are accessible through a reverse proxy set up on the 2008 R2. In addition the 2008 R2 provides access to storage over Windows file sharing (client backup, file sharing ...). Most of the clients are connected via wireless. My problem is that after some time (~24h) I lose the connection to the services provided by the 2008 R2 server as a result of (host) name resolution has stopped working. This only happens for wireless clients. Wired clients are not affected. To give more details: Network clients connected via wireless can't see clients connected via Ethernet and the network shares are not accessible anymore (even by putting in manually "\hostnameshare", but "\[IP address]share" still works). Being connected via Ethernet the communication between client and server works flawlessly - the server appears immediately on the network device list. The other way around is also not possible: the server can’t see clients connected via wireless. The reverse proxy is still accessible through wireless connection by putting in the IP address, e.g. "" but "http://hostname/homepage" won't work.A restart of the router will fix things but only for the next couple of hours.

Cisco Routers :: RV042 1 To 1 NAT Stopped Working

Jan 6, 2012

I've had 1 to 1 NAT setup for years now with no issues and the other day it simply stopped working.  Rebooted everything, had ISP clear arp on their cable modem yet nothing going.  As soon as I remove the 1 to 1 NAT on the router the PC has internet access.  Add the 1 to 1 back and no out going internet.  The configuration is pretty basic and has not changed.Thinking it could be a hardware issue I swapped it out with another RV042 I have with the exact config, same thing 1 to 1 NATs have no internet access.  Upgraded one of the RV042 firmware to Firmware Version:, had cable modem replaced, spent numerous calls with ISP.  nada
I have found one interesting thing however, any internal machine which is set to dhp works fine, and static ip that does not have a 1 to 1 nat works fine and the last ip in the 1 to 1 nat range works fine.  If I extend the range it is always only the last ip that works.  Even if I add 1 to 1 nats one line at a time, it is always the last entry that works..

Cisco Switches :: SG200-08 Web Interface Stops Responding

Aug 26, 2012

I bought a pair of SG200-08 switches a month ago and noticed that after a couple of weeks (give or take) the web interface stops responding (today being the 2nd time this happened). I am on v1.0.5.1 of the firmware on both switches. I can ping the switches just fine. I've run a port scan against then showing that port 80 is open. When I browse to either switch using IE9.0 or Chrome (v21) both show page loading however it remains blank - eventually the browser times out. I've tried multiple machines (just in case of port blocking) however always the same result.
To correct this I power cycle the switches and the web interface starts working. On the switching side, both seem to be working as there doesn't isn't any network impact (from what I can tell) however not being able to access the web interface is very irritating, not to mention making me wonder what else isn't working.
