Cisco WAN :: ISPs Layer2 Link But Not VPLS With ASA 6580
Mar 30, 2012
I understood that service provider will use hardware Alcatel 6850 on the distribution/core and Zyxel 2108G on customer access level.query is that service provider says it's not VPLS which should work most probably through MPLS network of ISP.ISP noted that it would be direct 802.1q VLAN between two sites without any Layer3 on ISP side.
How to:
- understand what kind of connection this will be?
- is this connection is fine for customer?
- identify if this kind of connection will be fine for converge network (voice+data) ?
- what should I ask to ISP to clarify details?

Lately my internet speed is lagging like crazy. It's a Comcast cable internet so it shouldn't be this slow. Each time I go to the internet, I get the tuning circle (Internet Explorer 9) for like ages before any internet comes on. It used to be almost instantly.
Is it my PC or is it my cable modem? I have resetting the modem many times but it's still the same. FYI: Windows 7 and IEX 9 and Motorola Cable modem SGB6580.

I'm running a Motorola Surfboard Extreme 6580 as my modem and main access point, but I have equipment downstairs in my home theater that I need LAN connections for. I want to set up another router/device as a wireless-n bridge to plug these into, and I don't want to spend more than necessary, but I want the best performance from my 6580. As the 6580 is only singal band, and my wife's computer only runs on 2.4ghz, I think I don't really need a dual band device, but a single band n device. I bought a netgear WNR2000v3 router, but when I try to bridge it (enable wireless repeating function) it tells me that I can not enable this function with AES, TKIP, or AES + TKIP enabled. The 6580 tells me I should use AES to get the best speed, and the WNR2000 won't let me use any security when bridging (the router's menu page hints tell me to enable WEP, but I don't even see an option for that, and it's pretty worthless as security I've been told). I think I need to return this WNR2000v3 and get something else.

My company is moving the datacenter to our new building on Saturday, however the users will remain at the old building until late next month so they bought a 100M Metro E VPLS circuit through their ISP. I went to test it today but could not ping the workstation from my laptop. I wanted to do some bandwidth testing with iperf but could never get to that point because ICMP connectivity wasn't even there. From what I understand, VPLS is just a layer 2 extension so they way I'm testing the circuit below SHOULD work, but it isn't. Spoke with the ISP and they tested the circuit end-to-end on their equipment which was fine so am I missing something?

ISP provides us with 20 mb/s download speed. Both Toshiba laptops used to be able to attain this but after reinstalling windows xp on this laptop, it can only achieve 8mb/s. The other laptop will get 20 mb/s whether connected wired or wireless. For the life of me cannot figure what has changed. I have installed all windows updates including SP3 and updated all drivers via Toshiba and Intel websites. It uses the Intel 3945b/g network card and the router is a motorola sbg 6580.

I have a Motorola SURFBoard 6580 as my cable modem + router + 802.11n AP. I wanted to add an AP on the second floor of the house for better signal. I have read that APs from different manuafacturers are not necessarily compatible for seamless roaming. Well, I guess the worst case is to turn off wifi on the SURFBoard and get 2 identical APs, but that's not ideal.

I get the error that the DNS lookup failed. I have looked everywhere on the HP site, and have talked to the Motorola people. I can't download an updated driver without the internet (I don't think)

I have a SR520 router with the ADSL WAN built in. I am looking to ignore the ADSL port and utilise the 4 FA ports to route between two networks. Can I configure the ports on the switch part of the router to become Layer 3 and take there own Ip addresses? If so I can save myself the purchase of a new router.I have used loopbacks before but not sure that will work.

One of our customer would like to connect 3 datacentres and decided to use VPLS to extend layer 2 VLANs . For this purpose they have bought six Cisco ASR1000 edge routers( two at each side). They also wanted to buy MPLS SP backbone but have decided to buy 2x10G dark fibre links instead. My question is,
1-Will it still possible to run VPLS over dark fibre? Because all the documents I read regarding VPLS are deployed over MPLS backbone.
2-Any sample configuration for implementation VPLS in ASR1000 ?

A Layer 2 switch with IP Address 192.168.1.4 (Vlan0), subnet 255.255.255.0 is physically connected to ADSL Router with IP address 192.168.1.1 (which is also the gateway address for the switch). The problem I have is that all the devices connected to the switch can intercommunicate but are unable to communicate with devices connected to the Router. I guess this may be something to do with how the Vlan is configured on ADSL router?

I have a second link being installed this week to a second ISP. Each ISP has tunnels that terminate on there routers for various services. Right now on the 6509 I have a static default route which sends all traffic to ISP one. Once I get the second link installed I would only like to send specific traffic to ISP1 and everything else to ISP2 unless the link is down. Would policy routing on the 6509 fit my needs?I would like to send 172.20.0.0 / 24 and 10.25.0.0 to isp one and everything else to ISP2.

My question is how to configure the 2nd ISP on the ASA to auto switch to the 2nd ISP when the 1st is down with a backup static NAT and backup ACL for the new ISP , in other words how to configure a active static NAT and Backup Static NAT and ACL only for Exchange/Mail Server. Here is the example of our configuration where PIE is Primary ISP & EMC is Backup ISP.
ASA Version 8.2(1)
hostname Corp-ASA
enable password 2KFQnbNIdI.2KYOU encrypted

I have a 192.168.1.xxx network connected to Verizon FIOS via Actiontec MOCA / router.I also have a 192.168.15.xxx network connected to Comcast via Motorola VT2442 router (used for Vonage) and a Motorola SB6121 cable modem. Each network has it's own gigabit switch connected to each router. The two networks are physically separated but switches and routers are physically side by side. What is the best configuration to allow devices on 192.168.1.xxx network to communicate with devices on the 192.168.15.xxx network (share printers, NAS, etc), but still have each network served by it's respective ISP, and each device still get it's dhcp, dns, gateway, etc from each respective router?

The problem is the memory available in common BGP-routers. A sup720-3BXL for example, a widly used sup-engine for handling BGP as far as I know, is getting to the limit of its memory size, depending on the number of upstream-providers connected to it.What are you doing, what are major ISPs doing, to circumvent this problem? setting up some server, working as route-reflector, and with a high level of summarizing routes, above supernetting? But at the cost of stability? Or buying new hardware, supporting bigger table? For example the RSP720-3CXL-10GE with up to 4GB memory? But how long will it last? Or a ASR-9001 with 8GB memory or even the ASR9k6 + RSP440 with 12GB mem?

I've been searching the net for days now trying to configure the ASA5505 for dual DHCP ISP use. All guides available assume you have one static.
After realizing that it required a Security Plus license to even configure 3 VLANs.
I can choose a backup interface in ASDM. It even says dual ISP enabled. Why cant there be a guide or simple configuration example or am I the only one looking for this kind of solution?
Customer has two ADSL internet connections and want to switch between them if they fail. No load balancing required.
