Cisco WAN :: Linux Not Passing Traffic Through 1721 / 1841?

Jan 6, 2011

I run a network that uses MPLS circuits to connect all of the companies different stores.  Internet access is through a Cisco ASA5500 here at the corp headquarters.

To make all of this work, we use a little 1721 gateway router to move traffic as needed.   All the clients in our corporate office use 10.10.99.1 (Cisco 1721) as a gateway.  The 1721 routes the traffic either to the internet (10.10.99.106 Cisco ASA5500) or the MPLS router (159.61.54.30).

For some reason, anything that runs on Linux (Ubuntu server, ReadyNAS boxes, Thecus NAS) will not pass traffic beyond the 1721 gateway router.

I've poured over the config for that router, and I can't find anything that could be causing this not to work.  Thinking that the 1721 was bad, I put an 1841 online in it's place, and it did the same thing.   I'm a noob when it comes to Cisco configs, but am learning as I go along.

Ive attached a txt file of the 1721 config.

Cisco WAN :: 1841 - 3G-GSM Module Not Connecting APN

Mar 11, 2013

I have a Hwic 3G-GSM module in an 1841 router. The sim card in the module is configured on an APN no username and password. I have checked all the config from a working router 1841 plus the same module and same vendor Sim card on the APN and all is working. I have configured the second router but it doesn't want to connect at all. If i put the Sim card in a standard 3G modem life is good, and I can connect to the APN and get the static IP address. When I'm trying to initiate the connection from the 1841 the Sim card wont connect.

My config to debug:

sh ip int brief
Interface                  IP-Address      OK? Method Status                Protocol
FastEthernet0/0            10.20.20.1      YES NVRAM  up                    up
FastEthernet0/1            unassigned      YES NVRAM  up                    up
Cellular0/1/0              unassigned      YES NVRAM  up                    up
NVI0                       10.20.20.1      YES unset  up                    up

[ code] ...........

I'm not sure if the cellular card is calling the wrong script (d0efault-d0ials0crip) instead of the gsm one configured.

Cisco WAN :: Connecting Two 1841 Routers Together

Feb 6, 2011

For educational reasons (a Videoconference class), I need to connect two 1841 router with each other. They both have HWIC-2T modules, but it's almost impossible for me to have the CAB-SS-2626X Smart Serial crossover cable on time. So, I was wondering if there will be some kind of a problem if I connect them through a UTP crossover cable using their FastEthernet interfaces. I suppose it will not "simulate" a serial wan connection but, would it work as a router to router connection?

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 1841 - Connecting To Hosted Websites

Jan 10, 2013

Here's my setup:

 - Cisco 1841 connected to the internet on fa0/1
- LAN connected to fa0/0/1 (switch port, connected to Vlan1)

On my LAN I have a web server that houses different websites. Those websites have DNS records that point to my public IP address, located on fa0/1. From the outside I can reach the websites perfectly, but I can't reach them from the inside. So it looks like I can't seem to connect from my local LAN address to the public ip address on the Cisco (who then should NAT it to the correct server)

Here is a snippet from my config:

--NAT--
ip nat inside source static tcp 192.168.0.3 80 interface FastEthernet0/1 80
ip nat inside source route-map Internet interface FastEthernet0/1 overload

--OUTSIDE INTERFACE--
 interface FastEthernet0/1
description WAN
ip address dhcp
ip access-group WAN-IN in
[ code]...

--INSIDE INTERFACE--
 interface Vlan1
description LAN
ip address 192.168.0.254 255.255.255.0
ip access-group LAN-IN in

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 1841 Tunnel Without Default Gateway Not Connecting

Feb 12, 2012

I'm trying to configure an IPSEC VPN + tunnel for multicast data. When the default gateway is set on the router (1841) it works fine but if I only set a route to the IPSEC peer via our gateway then the tunnel fails to come up. The end point is to a 3rd party. [code]

I found that if I add a static route for the tunnel destination via fa0/0, the public facing interface, the tunnel comes up..ip route 10.23.4.2 255. 255. 255. 255 FastEthernet0/0

and I can then ping the tunnel IP at the far end - 10.23.0.5.Why would that be? Is there a better way to do this without using a default route??

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 1841 - Connecting Routers Via Serial Interface

Oct 22, 2012

While I managed to connect to each router individually, I decided it was time to connect the routers together via serial; as I don't have any serial cables and need to buy some, what serial cables I need, as well as to ask whether I have the right cards in my router(s) that will allow me to do so.

I bought 3 1841 routers, and all have a 1 port serial WAN Interface Card (WIC 1-T); one router has 2 of these, and one router has a WIC-1B-S/T .. My question is, can I connect the routers with a serial cable via WIC 1-T, or do I need a 2-T

Linksys Wireless Router :: How To Configure E2000 On Linux

Jan 11, 2012

I'm a Linux user and just got a new Linksys E2000 router. I attached the router to the computer with the Ethernet cable, and switched the router on, expecting it to work as DHCP server by default, so I could access routers configuration and set it up as needed. This however failed right away. Obviously the router didn't start DHCP, even after I reset with the reset button on the back. Now there is no way to accesss the router to configure it, since web interface path relies on router's DHCP function to access it through 192.168.1.1 which is not working. What can be done to enable it?

Making Linux Router / Firewall / Proxy From Dell Poweredge 1950?

Apr 7, 2012

Ok, so what I want to do is make a router/firewall/proxy (maybe add webserver/FTP as well). Just to start off I want to say that I have moderate knowledge of Linux, enough to administer it from the CL. I have setup routers before but it was years ago and I've forgotten some of the details involved. What I do is a base LAMP install, with DNS, Samba, DHCP server, OpenSSH and then Webmin for easier administration. I've also installed EHCP (easy hosting control panel) in the past but have not at this point.

So, what I want to know is how do I setup the NIC's in the etc/network/interfaces file. Let's say that eth0 connects to the modem and eth1 & 2 are internal adapters. Currently my network is running a Linksys WRT54GL with DD-WRT and the router is set to DHCP for the WAN connection and DHCP is running on the internal network as well. The modem is at 192.168.254.254 and is giving the router an address of 192.168.254.1 my internal network is 192.168.1.1 (192.168.1.0/24). I would like to setup my internal router address to 192.168.1.1 so I guess I need to set it to static in my interfaces config and then set my eth0 to dhcp. Does this sound correct?

So if I do the above my only question is how do I setup the routing tables after that? I always get messed up when I need to make the switch from my Linksys router to my Linux box. I'm not worried about firewall rules at first I can change those once I have the router up and running. I just don't know if I need to make some kind of bridge to bridge the eth0 and eth1 (external NIC and internal NIC).

Linksys Wireless Router :: E4200 Won't Give DHCP Address To Linux Boxes?

Sep 25, 2011

I've got threeLinux Boxes (running Centos 6).  They were all connected to my cheap WRT54GL--  DHCP worked every time.Absolutely no problems.  Both the LInux boxes and the WRT54GL had MTU set to manual, 1492.I replaced the WRTt54GL with the expensive E4200.  I set the new router's MTU to manual, 1492.  NONE of my Linux boxes ever receive a DHCP address.  I look at the logs, and they do DHCPDISCOVER, get DHCPNACK, try several different intervals, and then fail the interface and quit.ALL I did was unhook cables from the WRT54GL and plug into the E4200.  Yes, the WRT54GL was powered off.   NOTHING was changed in the Linux configs.  Yes, DHCP is enabled, address-range assigned, etc.  BTW--  one box is dual boot with Win7-- in Win7 (using the same card, obviously), DHCP works just fine.  But, Linux doesn't work.

I can give the boxes static IP's, and all is well.  Just can't get DHCP to work.  I evfen tried putting in DHCP reservations (via MAC assignments)  for the E4200-- still doesn't work. The new E4200 is on the 02 firmware (which I believe is cuurent). If I can't iron this simple task out, in a couple of days I'm taking the E4200 back, and getting a refund.  I'll stay with my old WRT54GL... it works.  Hate to give up on some of the new E4200 features, though.

Linksys Wireless Router :: E2500 Linux Debian 6 (Squeeze) DHCP Failure

Nov 17, 2012

I have a Cisco/Linksys E2500 router. I connected to it through one of the Ethernet ports with a Microsoft Windows XP Pro machine and installed and ran the setup software. Windows was able to connect to the router and to the internet through the Siemens Gigaset 4300 DSL modem to my internet provider, Windstream.I cannot get my Dell GX620 which is running Linux Debian 6 (Squeeze) to connect to the router through the Ethernet ports. It appears that I receive no reply to the DHCP requests made by Linux.

I have only one monitor, keyboard and mouse and no KVM switch to run both the machines at once. I do have Windows XP Pro running in a VirtualBox virtual machine on the Debian machine,I can configure Debian to a static IP if I knew all of the IP configuration that the E2500 would assign. I would also need to know what reconfiguration the router requires if I use a static IP.

VGN-SR490 / Linux - Missing Eth0 Ethernet Interface In Ubuntu - Can't Connect To Router

May 6, 2012

I'm having trouble getting my Ubuntu 10.04 machine (Sony Vaio VGN-SR490) to connect to the Internet by way of an Ethernet cable connected directly to my router. I'm able to connect to the Internet using this same cable using a Windows machine, so there's something wrong with the way Linux is configured.

Here are my network settings on Linux:

$ ifconfig
lo Link encap:Local Loopback
inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0
inet6 addr: ::1/128 Scope:Host
UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:16436 Metric:1

[code]....

It looks like the network adapters list is empty. I will now install both Windows XP and Ubuntu Linux dual-boot. I'm still not able to access the internet, even through Windows. I'm wonder if this could be a hardware problem with the computer or a problem with the router itself. Other computers can connect to this same router, and work fine.

Can't Setup NAT For Linux Device?

May 14, 2012

I am having a problem configuring NAT for a Linux device on our network. I am far from a Cisco expert but I have configured this many times in the past for Windows machines quite easily. I do this using the Cisco ASDM 5.2 for PIC GUI. All I needed to do for the Windows machines was:-setup the static NAT rule(inside ip translated to outside ip)-create a security policy(outside, incoming rule) to allow traffic to the outside ipand hey presto it works, ie: i can ping the outside ip and access the device remotely if I have allowed correct ports.I am not sure if this is the correct method but it was how i was shown and has worked many times in the past. But with this Linux device its no dice. The Linux device isnt a desktop but a mediator for industrial air conditioning controls. It runs a web server which we can view temperatures etc... through a browser. This works inside our network by browsing to the inside ip but I am trying to set it up to work outside of our network.

Cisco Firewall :: 6500 - FWSM Linux

Dec 20, 2012

We run a 6500 with an FWSM with multiple security contexts as well as cascading contexts with a "shared V LAN" . There is a problem with regards to Linux machines and our shared network.

For example, we have three Linux machines in production, each in three separate V LAN's. For me to communicate to these boxes from one V LAN to another I must first ping the server. If I do not ping the server it will not bring up a connection like ssh or HTTP, etc. Below is the error I get from the FWSM that hosts the Linux server, but like I said once I ping the server the error goes away. We only have this problem with Linux machines, and it is a problem for all three of them. Is the FWSM having issues understanding something with all three Linux boxes? Below is the error I get at first, when I try to SSH from one V LAN to another V LAN with the Linux machine.
