Constant Internet Drops From Modem?
Dec 17, 2012
In the past week I have been getting totally random disconnects from my modem. Sometimes it works great, other times it will essentially cease to function as it tries to sync to bells lines, it seems to be worse at night from what I've seen. I have called my ISP over 4 times, had 3 separate techs come to my house and replace everything from the router to the Internet port down the road. The only thing that has not been replaced is the actual phone jack in my wall but every tech has looked at it and said its functioning fine. I am at a loss, and on the verge of canceling my service with my ISP at this point. Problem is I cannot get rogers for various reasons, so bell is my only option for high speed internet, so canceling with them sorts leaves me high and dry.

I currently live in a fairly-large apartment in Downtown San Francisco and as you can probably imagine, I have ALOT of interference with nearby residential and business wifi's, microwave's, cell-phones and all that jazz.
I currently have the ATT Elite DSL package, which is I believe the 6MBPS(?) package? Anyway, it's the $40 package and I want to say it's either the second or third up from the basic 19.95/month subscription. Here's my problem: ever since I moved into this building, I get signal drops on my ATT all the time--like at least once an hour if not more often. I had a technician check the wiring and he even replaced the router box (they always do) in hopes of improving the situation but so far, no dice.
I have tried switching to different channels after using scanning to see what channels other internet users nearby were using, but I did not see any improvement. The best solution I've been able to come up with is to set my router to be on 802.11B only. For the most part,I have not disconnected but I do feel a certain amount of slow-down or lag compared to my 802.11G settings. Now,I might be paranoid but it certainly does take a good amount of time longer to load up pages and such as compared to previously. The tech suggested I look towards getting an 802.11A/N router, but alas ATT does not support routers of that caliber...not sure why. It's been years and they're still stuck with the 2Wire 2701HG-B model for DSL.

Basically my sister, who lives in a flat attached to the side of my parents' house, wanted me to find a solution for her to get internet, as there is no signal from my parents' wireless down in the flat.Originally I tried an old belkin wireless range extender I had lying around but even then the signal was extremely weak and the connection was too slow. So, I decided I would get some powerline adapters. But, of course, my sister needs wireless, so I figured I would use the powerlines to connect a second wireless router to the existing one.And so begin my real problems. The thing is, it actually worked fine at first. I set up a new wireless network, and had the ethernet from the powerline running in to the WAN port of the second router. But, every few minutes or so the connection would just die suddenly and take a while to come back (the connection was still there, but the browser just gave DNS errors etc).So I did some googling and fount a lot of people saying that I had to A) plug it into one of the LAN ports, not WAN, and B) disable DHCP on the second router. However when I do this I simply cant load anything at all. I'm thinking maybe there's some additional setup regarding static IPs or something that I need to do when I disable DHCP?

My internet will drop permently if i connect my router ot my modem. I have purchased a wireless router and intended to use it with my Iphone and when firends come over with laptops they could use it as well. Because i live on 3 and a half acres i don't need to protect it well it doesn't bother me. For a couple of days it was working fine until i was playing a game and my internet just dropped and i investigated the issue and found when i unplug the router which is connect to my modems first slot (Ethernet cable) the internet will come back on but when i put the cord back in my net drops. ive tried changing the slots and trying different cables.

We have approx 40 branch offices - all of which are connected to a single core site over VPN Tunnels using various gear. At one particular site, we are having issues with the tunnel dropping sporadically throughout the day - some days it happens 10 times, some days it happens none. This just randomly started happening two weeks ago, without any changes taking place. Since it started happening, I have upgraded the code to latest versions, but still the issue persists. This particular site has a 2901 and connects back to a 2951.
Below is the output from:

debug crypto isakmp

My internet connection drops every 10-30 minutes and reconnects. The modem seems to reset (every light except the power one). I have a Zoom model 5241 modem. Additionally, I cannot access my modem's status page [URL]. It's as if I'm trying to access a site that doesn't exist. Comcast sent a tech who replaced a splitter, but that didn't work.

Immediately after a power outage, my internet connection predictably drops after a set period of time or usage. It is either after about 30 min or 5-15 mins of watching Netflix. I have a modem hooked up to a wireless router and use the network on my iPhone, laptop and Roku. Since the problem, I have dropped to just having my laptop connected but this has not worked. The wireless network will disappear after the 5 - 20 mins, the light on the modem and router will show no internet (all other lights are normal). Internet connection will be reestablished if I either unplug both the modem and the router (not just one or the other) OR if I unplug the ethernet line from the modem to the router and plug it directly into my laptop (the internet light on the modem will go from "off" to "on"). Despite internet connection working from transferring from the router to the laptop if I connect it back to the router, the internet lights goes off again (resolves upon unplugging and plugging modem and router back in). The internet has not yet dropped when it is physically plugged into my laptop.
I have tried the following:
-Powercycling (temp fix until it crashes again)
-Plugging into a different outlet (I cannot connect it to a different phone line, only have 1 with DSL. Also, I do not have phone service or cable, just internet via DSL)
-Resetting modem
-Resetting 2 different routers
-Calling ISP, their test of the modem was inconclusive
Again, my wifi does not see my network whenever the internet is dropped or the ethernet cord is unplugged from the modem. The outlets I have it plugged into has some type of electrical issue, two electrical devices have shorted out in the room they are in. I do not think this issue is electrical, everything seems to have constant power (unless the power outage shorted out something in the modem). Below are some details of my modem and router. I will provide any additional info requested. I will gladly buy a new modem but I want to see if it can be fixed first.
My modem: Westell
WireSpeed Dual Connect
Model: A90-210030-04
DSL Statistics
Line State: Up
Modulation: G.DMT-Mode
Data Path: Interleaved
[code].....
Router: Linksys E2000 Internet Connection Type: Automatic Config - DHCP (I tried PPPoE and it never got a valid IP address from my ISP)

I have a new DIR-815 router, with a network consisting of one HP desktop computer, one Sony VAIO laptop computer and one Samsung tablet computer. My problem is that I can't seem to maintain a constant internet connection requiring a new router setup at least once a week, sometimes more frequently. Also, even though the network I set up is called "HOME" my desktop, which is the computer connected to my cable provider, never shows any connection to that network. Both the laptop and the tablet connect to the :HOME" network while the desktop connects to something called "Network 5" which does not show up anywhere in my setup. As long as I have an Internet connection I really don't care what the connection is called, but I find it strange that I am connected to a network that apparently does not even exist

I'm currently running Windows 7, and I have this issue where from time to time I am booted from my internet with the error saying either one of two things, one being; No internet access but it does show I am connected to my router, and the other being; plug in an ethernet cable. My 2 brothers on the other hand are both connected to the same router through cables as well and neither have this issue. Both issues seem to simply fix themselves by just waiting, but the disconnects are killing me.

I just got a new 2011 Toshiba Satellite L755 laptop with Windows 7, I also have a 2006 Compaq Presario with the original Windows Vista. We use a DIR-615 router for WIFI connection on both. The old Compaq will keep a connection with no problem and never looses a connection. The new Toshiba will keep 3 bars of signal but will not keep a constant connection to the internet. Do I need to upgrade my router, which I bought the one I have about 3-4 years ago, or could it possibly be a problem with my new computer?

I have a Motorola surfboard sb5101. Provider is comcast.I have never had any problem with my equipment until now. Here is whats going on. I bought a used sb5101 a week ago so that I would not have to pay the rental fee anymore. Comcast activated it, and it worked fine for a week or two. The other night I got disconnected from XBOX live randomly in the middle of a game. Thought maybe just a hickup, no biggie. Well it happened 3 more times in a few hours, then again the next day.So thinking maybe this used modem is bad, I plugged back in the rental from comcast which I still had. Worked fine for a while, then the same thing, random dissconnects after 10 min, 30 min, 2 hrs into a game...etcOn both modems, the 1st and 4th green light are solid, the 2nd and 3rd green light are flashing when the connection from LIVE drops. So I'm starting to think know that neither of the modems are bad. I then try going directly to the modem instead of the router, never had any problems with the router but figured I try.I even went into the attic and got rid of the 4 way splitter that feeds cable into all the bedrooms and put in a 2 way instead hooking up only the cable line im using for xbox. Thought maybe the signal is getting degraded to bad, eventhough never had a problem before. So now I'm practically hooked up right to the line coming off the street, ethernet cord plugged directly into the modem, no router. Still dropping connections randomly with same 2nd and 3rd light flashing. The connection needs to be completely stable for multiple hours. Also, I called comcast when I had to reactivate the rental modem, so they did refreshed that modem and reactivate it, but still had the disconnects the next day.

Model : TD-VG3631
Hardware Version : V1
Firmware Version : TD-VG3631_V1_130108
ISP : iinet
I have set up this modem correctly as it will occasionally sync and internet will be connected for a short time 5-10 seconds then loses sync.Have asked ISP to check line and they say it is fine. I have upgraded to current firmware but same result.I purchased for wireless N and print server features.Have reverted back to 4+ year old Netgear DG834GV which works perfectly with same cabling, filter etc. ISP suggest connect VG3631 on ADSL 1 but if I need to do that I may as well take it back and buy a cheaper wireless AP.I also set my existing Netgear as modem only and connected to EWAN port of VG3631 and it did the same thing (kept dropping connection), this suggests that it is a VG3631 hardware or software problem (completely separate to DSL/Line issues).

I have a Motorola modem SURFBoard SB4200, along with a wireless Linksys router that connects to that modem. The router works normally but the modem often dies and restarts itself after about 1-2 minutes.
What could be causing this problem? How should I start debugging it?
Could an excessive amount of network traffic be bringing down the modem? Are there any tools that can monitor the modem?

My computer is on a direct connection with a docsis 3 modem - with service provided by Comcast. I had no problems with the internet for about a month after signing up with Comcast at 6Mbps. Then out of no where the internet began to drop out whenever in use. When the computer is connected to the internet, and I am not actually using "bandwidth" the connection stays connected, all day with no blips. But when I try to access Youtube or some other site they demands bandwidth it drops out. Comcast has sent out 7-8 Techs to troubleshoot the issue to no avail. They have replaced the modem 3 times, the ethernet cable (is that the right word?) has been replaced, and Comcast cut holes into my walls to re-wire the entire building. I just had a guy leave from Comcast, and when he hooked up his laptop to this modem he had absolutely no problem. Then he hooked up a router, and we both used direct connect to get on the internet, and as long as his computer was connected the signal was strong with no blips. We removed his computer and the connection dropped within a few minutes. Comcast says they have verified the integrity of all their equipment, cables, splitters, main line, ect...I even tried backing up my machine and reformatting it and I still have the same issue. I've always been good about not getting virus or spyware. I have no idea why only my PC won't stay connected to the internet. Oh, also the Comcast tech hooked up a meter to the cable line and he says when the internet drops out on my end that the cable signal is still strong with no blips. When the modem goes out all the lights drop out and it has to re-identify, then it comes back up for a few minutes, only to spiral down and disconnect.
I live in an apartment, and I have a usb adapter that allows me to get on the internet wirelessly. The apartment I am at has a club house that offers free internet to people here who don't have it. If I plug in my adapter I can get a signal from the club house's wireless, and I can connect to that, and I have no problems at all on the apartments club house internet, only on my direct connect form my Comcast modem..

So the best way to explain this is if im on the internet i wont really notice it because it happens so fast and im on the page. also its wireless internet. If i play for example league of legends il be fine then il be reconnecting then im back but the reason im reconnecting is because my connection dropped for a second.IF i open say an online game and i open a stream watching someone. Either the stream will turn off or the game will disconnect or ill get kicked from both.Ive gone into command prompt and done ping google.com and stuff sometimes its perfect then i do it again it misses 2 with time out then i do again its perfect then again time out again time out then perfect its really annoying.I recently started playing a new game and il be running then disconnect from the servers because my connection dropped for a second and ive rang bt and stuff have 2 new hubs. switch phone lines replaced filters still dont know whats going on.

I have an ADSL 2+ connection that constantly seems to be dropping at random intervals for no particular reason that i can tell anywhere from 3 to 20 times a day for over 6 months.I have a Dlink DIR-300 router which connects hard 2 pcs and a wirless connection that host for 4 devices , the Router is connected to my Dlink DSL-502T Gen 2 ADSL 2+ Router.I'm constantly having to disconnect the power wait 5 minutes and reconnect the power to get everything back online. From what i can tell the main problem is the DIR-300 router, ive checked it has the latest firmware, reset the router from factory, tested it with less connections, called up my ISP and checked everything was good on there end but to no avail[CODE]

I am not good at networking. My friend wanted me to set up his home network.because the modem is unable to supply a good wireless connection to the rest of the household when the door is closed, a second router was needed.I set both routers to run with DHCP as they have many devices that needs to connect to the router for internet. However, a few hours after setting it up, my friend's pc as well as all devices connected to the second router faced issues. The router's interface showed that it does not have connection to the internet. they are still facing this problem until now.

My router was working fine. Then 1 day I started having slow internet. My ping in games would jump up from ~60 to about 400-800. Did some troubleshooting with my ISP. Seemed like my modem was to blame. So I bought a Netgear one from BestBuy.
Everything was fine. Then 1 day the internet stated disconnecting. None of the computers could see the router in the wireless networks. I found the only way to solve the problem is to unplug the power and plug it back in. Strangely it seems to happen a lot late at night like around 11PM or 12 midnight EST.
Before with my old modem I just had automatic settings and DHCP. With the new modem it wouldn't work so I called DLink and the tech guy walked me through some steps, one of which was changing the ip address from 192.256.0.1 to 10.10.10.1. Whenever I reboot the router after a disconnect the computers say "there was an IP address conflict." Maybe this has something to do with it?
I saw in another topic someone said their router's time was wrong. Mine said it was 2010 so I updated it to automatically sync with ntp1.dlink.com and now it shows 2012. Let's see if it fixes now. My mom's laptop had a similar problem with Skype. For some reason the clock kept resetting to 2000 and Skype would not work (everything else did). When she resets the time to 2012 it starts working again.

Internet connection fails when desktop boots?I have a wireless internet router/modem. Netgear. The internet works fine via wireless for laptops, phones etc.Until i boot my desktop up that is connected via cable to the router it then drops the internet connection. The network is still showing as active but local only.If i open a browser it tells me that it cannot resolve the DNS server.if i switch the desktop off and reconnect the laptop it works. So its not the laptop or the router i have used a few different cables all the same.I'm using XP on desktop fairly fresh install with AVG antivirus and not much else on it but i have had the internet working since install so its some setting somewhere thats changed or needs setting up again.

I'm at my wits end. We had broadband from Plusnet (uk) put in at xmas. I've had a problem with my laptop connecting wirelessly so I've run a cable from the router up to my room. All's well and I can connect to servers and play online all day to my hearts content. It all goes pairshaped though when someone connects to the internet wirelessly. As soon as the internet is accessed the network just goes. I've spoken to plusnet to see what they can see and as far as they're concerned there's no problem coming into the house. We're getting up to 12mbps which is pretty nice and as I mentioned there's no problem unless someone connects wirelessly. I've changed the channel on the router as there might be interference from a neighbours router. I thought this might have fixed the problem but it's not.

My problem seems to be with the two laptops with Centrino wireless adapters. My daughter has a Dell with Centrino and was complaining that her wireless keeps dropping out and the other 3 laptops in the house had no problems, I bought a new Samsung laptop the other day and my wireless keeps dropping out on it as well. I looked at all the settings and stuff in the posts I found and noticed that I have a Centrino with advanced N6325 and remembered that my daughters dell also has a Centrino wireless, this is the only similarities that I noticed and can find no reason why I am loosing internet.

Just starting a couple of days ago my internet started dropping about every 10-20 minutes. The problem is only with this computer. I have a laptop right next to me and it works fine no problem and two other PCs that don't have any issues so I don't think it is the router. I have scanned my computer with different antivirus software and it's clean. The computer is always connected with a full 5 bars and says it has internet access but sometimes it drops and in order to get it up and running again I unplug the wireless adapter and plug it in again. At first I thought it might have been the adapter so I swapped it out for a new one and I'm still having the same problems. My wireless is unencrypted. This keeps happening over and over again and I am stumped on what to do.
