D-Link DIR-615 :: How To Limit Speed On Some Computers
May 15, 2011
i recently bought the dir-615, and i have 4 computers connected to it, 2 desktops with ethernet cables and 2 laptops with wifi. I want to know how to limit the internet speed on some computers, because i sometimes need full speed on my desktop. Is it possible within the router configuration interface?

I bought my d-link 615 a few days ago and managed to connect it to my network and so on but I have a problem when it comes to my download speed. My usual speed is somewhere between 7.5-8 mb/s but when I have the router installed it's limited to 5 mb/s. Do you know why this might be happening?

On board NIC: Intel 82579V Gigabit Network Controller (asus sabertooth x79 motherboard)I installed the drivers for it from intel's site.f I set link speed to auto (chooses 100mbps full duplex) or 100mbps full or half duplex, any HTTP downloads get slowed to a crawl (30kbps) (steam downloads remain at normal speeds). If I set it to 10mbps full duplex, download speeds jump to normal (500kbps for most HTTP sources)his happens on just this new computer (wired connection), any other computers on the network (wireless) work just fine

My home LAN supports 3 Chinese students who spend many hours each day watching movies through either Baidu or QQ. Both these operations seem offer streaming video but in a P-2-P mode. As a result typical daily uploads are running at greater than 6GB. My ISP daily upload limit is 1750 MB; after that I am throttled to 25% of the service I am paying for.I have tried and failed to explain to the students the impact this is having on me. I would like therefore to be able to prevent P2P uploads by suitable settings on my router. Is this possible?

I work at a small private school for languages and we have 3 public computers for the students to use for general stuff, internet research, facebook etc etc. Now every week i go to the comps and make sure their running well etc etc but every time there is new stupid things being installed by the students. Anyway, i wanna put a stop to this activity. the computers are not a toy for this lot but a tool and if they need a program for something to come and ask. As it stands the comps are all win 7, and are connected to the network via WIFI. the network is a simple zyxel router. There is another office comp connected to the router running Win XP pro and i also have a spare comp in the office which is unused.

I own a cyber cafe. I was told that switches are smart enough to distribute the same speed to all the clients. So I was not worried at first. But now if 2-3 customers starts watching youtube videos the rest starts complaining about the speed. I googled for the solution but got none. How to limit the speed,I want to lock the bandwidth of each computer.

I was wondering if theres a program or something that I could use for my router to limit the bandwidth that it gives on wifi? I currently have about a 20down/2up connection from time warner with a linksys E1200 router.
I just want to limit the wifi speeds to about 70% because recently someone moved in that does a lot of downloads and makes my games go from 40 ping to 300+ and also my phone is through the internet, which becomes unusable.
just some simple setting to set the max wifi data to 13megabits/s down 1mbit up or something.

In my home We have 3 pcs.
1. my personal PC1
2. home or general PC2
3. wireless PC (not important here.)so PC1 and PC2 are connected directly to internet via this [URL] modem router. I have full control over everything and I did setup the whole thing. We have a limited bandwidth internet plan, but a lot of bandwidth is easily used up by PC2.I want to limit the speed of internet access on that PC2 so that downloading becomes impossible or difficult.

We need to have one connection with less internet bandwidth assigned to it than all other other connections. Basically it is a separate conection from all others, incoming just from one switch port and separate VLAN.I know this can be done on the switch by limiting the bandwidth allocated to a port,
however, is it possible to have the speed limited down, just before it goes to the internet, ie, on the ASA, rather than doing it on the switch? The firewall is an ASA 5505.

How can I limit bandwidth speed of guest accounts? Or are there free softwares available to do something like that? It's kinda like the hotspot softwares - where we can set hourly, daily, monthly allowances and see a report on their connectivity.

capping all of the computers on my router to a certain speed. I like to play games and the others like to buffer movies, is there a way I can cap all of ours so we can each get smooth internet use? Be it by program or through the router it would be great to get it setup and working. Router is Actiontec GT704WG and has 4 computers hooked up to it, will post other spec's if needed.

I recently got a new 100MB/s cable internet connection in my house... when plugging in a cable into my laptops I can easily get 92MB/s on [URL] (40 MB/s wireless) when plugging the same cable into my PC I only get .5 MB/s (same as wireless connection on PC)even my cell phone can get 10 MB/s from the WiFi...Ive done everything I can think of... driver software for the Atheros AR8121/AR8113/AR8114 PCI-E Ethernet Controller is up to date... I've restarted both the modem, router, and computer multiple times and nothing changes...I have also disabled ipV6 ... no difference...

In the household we have 3 computers. 1 computer upstairs is the main computer with the router. My computer and the girlfriends is downstairs on wireless. We are currently paying for a 7.5 Mbps download speed. The computer upstairs and my girlfriends computer which is 10 feet away, get speeds between 7.5 Mbps and 10 during boost. My computer during a speed test will spike to 7.5 Mbps and remain anywhere from 2 Mbps to 3.5, roughly have of what they have. I have tested both wireless devices on my computer and my girlfriends, no improvement. She is running a device plugged via usb, I'm running a wireless card. Tried her usb, no success. Went into Task Manager and processes looking for other programs that would eat bandwidth, no success. And played around for a little bit with the channel settings on my card. It is Asus 802.11n WirelessLanCard.
Running Windows 7, Kaspersky, Shaw is my ISP.

I live in the tampa bay area, I have bright house (BHN) as my service provider, which provides a Road Runner Lightning (40/5) package. I previously used BHN's top tier (20/2) back in July (and prior) with no problems.
After converting to Lightning in August of this year (2010). Of course, BHN (and every other provider) wants to force a modem/router down your throat, so I had them bridge it (in short, turn it into a dummy modem with no routing). I had an SMC branded modem gateway at the time. I work from home 2 days a week (so I can spend more time with my kids during morning, lunch, right after work) and this requires me to use QoS to ensure my VOIP work calls don't get dropped, if the family is watching youtube videos or watching netflex.
My network was as follows SMC Modem >WAN IP>>WAN Port>>D-link DIR-655>>Switch Ports>PC1, PC2, PC3
Everything seemed fine (from a usability stand point) till about 2 weeks ago when my upload speed seemed to grind to halt. Normally I was able to upload about 200-300K per second, and I noticed this dropped to about 45K per second during a drop box upload. First thing I did was power cycle both my modem and router (in the proper/usual order). After they both come up, I start using speed test to find out what my upload speeds were. I was getting about 39Mbps down, but only .56Mbps up still. I factory reset my router.... test, similar speeds. Power cycle all computers (just in case), and then modem/router. Tested, similar speeds. Updated the firmware to the latest. Same issue
Called BHN customer service, they factor reset it, but it wasn't in bridge mode. If I by passed the 655, in factory mode (non bridge mode) upload speeds returned to better than expected states. If I bridged the cable modem, upload speeds seemed to crash.
Had BHN replace the modem, seemed fixed for a day, then issue came back. Had them come back out and replace it again, this time with a Motorolla Surfboard modem... same issue. Fine during factory reset, however after they bridge the modem, upload speeds were fine. Told BHN I would take it from there.. Connected up the DIR-655, and upload speeds crashed again. (.6Mbps). Called D-Link Support, and the Chinese English speaking rep seemed to not be listening to me and tried to have me adjust my MTU as well as Wireless settings. Long story short... the rep was a level 0 id10t and I hope D-link will consider hiring better employees/contractors. So I was all about to give up and replace it with a DD-WRT capable router (which it takes me a lot to want to swap hardware), when I discovered the wan shaping was on. Which I thought to myself... nah... QoS has never messed up before... why would it be the cause. Turned off wan shapping... and voila. Issue seemed to be insta-resolved.
Unsatisfied with that... I decided to dig a lil deeper. I turned on Wan shaping again, but decided to set the settings manually instead of auto detect.
Here are the settings I used... (Advanced Tab>QoS)
Enable Traffic Shaping - Checked
Automatic Uplink Speed - Unchecked
Manual Uplink Speed - 5000
Connection Type: Cable or Other Broadand Network
Enable QoS Engine - Checked Automatic Classification - unchecked (this checked seemed to affect my upload speed by about 5-10% during testing) Dynamic Fragmentation - unchecked (this checked seemed to be the worse enemy for upload speed)
While I know I'm not any network guru (still have to use a subnet calculator for subnetting), I think I did a pretty good job drilling down the issue (once I got passed my service provider replacing modems).
Anyways, I've had overall good luck with D-Link products, even have a 5 port 10/100 switch (all metal) from 1998 that works great. Hopefully, D-Link will just either put more documentation on the web, or hire better employees.

I have had a great experience with my old DIR-655 (rev A) router. However, I would like to upgrade to a newer and better D-link router for my home that contains many well-connected children. Which routers are like my DIR-655, and have better overall performance than the DIR-655 without necessarily using the benefit of the 5 GHz second band. What better performing routers can record more than 24 MAC addresses in the Network Filtering area? I understand many people don't agree with MAC address filtering, but I like it to keep my kids from giving out my network password to all the neighbor kids and their friends too. So, MAC address filtering works for me. Or, should I just get an updated version of the DIR-655?

I just purchased a 100M fiber line to go with a brand new D-Link DIR-655 router. Before plugging in the router, I tested on my laptop directly from the modem and had great result speeds of 98M/97M. I connected the router, then plugged my laptop to find I was only getting speeds of about 10M/6M. This was true for both wired and wireless connections.
I took a look at the router settings. I turned off QoS, but that didn't work. One thing I did see was the WAN was set to auto. I attempted to change that to 100mbps or to 1000mpbs. However, when I did that my modem light that shows a 100M connection is active turned off and I couldn't get internet. I was only able to get a connection if I left that on auto. Is there a setting somewhere that is limiting my bandwidth from the router?I reset the router twice and checked to find I had the latest firmware. Is there something that I am missing? I have always been a Linksys fan, but wanted to see how D-Link is.

when I connect my DIR-655 to the Motorola SB6141 cable modem I notice that the link speed LED on the cable modem never glows blue indicating a gigabit connection, it only glows amber indicating a lower negotiated speed. I am using a Cat6 cable between the two devices and have also tried a Cat5e cable.
When I try and force the WAN port speed to 1000Mpbs in the router interface the cable modem link speed will not light at all with no connectivity. Only resetting to Auto WAN port speed restores functionality albeit at the lower negotiated speed setting.
I'm running the DIR-655 rev B1 at 2.03NA firmware level.
I did connect the modem directly to my PC that uses an Intel Gigabit ethernet card and still had the lower connection indication (Amber) so it seems that the modem might be faulty.
