View 1 RepliesHave had ADSL installed through a router, connected the wireless router and it works fine Have since connected the original router via -120mtrs of CAT5 cable to extend to the house. Connection through LAN is fine into desktop however the minute we try to connect an additional wireless router the connection fails. We have even put the LAN from the second Wireless into the desktop and there is no connectivity. We have had a technician come to sort the problem, they advise that they have no explanation as to why the LAN works from the distance but the wireless does not. They have suggested that we need to cut the CAT5 half way and put an antenna up to connect the two routers.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI am installing a network in my small business and was given a spool of Cat5 cable to run wires... I know the length in feet of cable that I was given, but I was wondering if there is some kind of markers on the cable to tell me how much is left... I will be charged for it by foot after I'm done, and I want to know how much I've used. Do I have to just use a measuring tape? Seems unnecessarily complicated... I've checked the wire but can't see any marker of the length remaining.

Last night I accessed the Internet at home via my USB Internet dongle (actually an O2 mobile phone). Today neither works. I have also tried to connect to the Internet via Wireless and that does not work either.Needless to say my desktop (using the same Cat5 cable) works. My mobile phone can access the Internet on it own. And others can get the wireless to work.My Vaio can connect to all three; however, all three say "No Internet access".I changed nothing between last night and this morning. I have scanned through the list of Windows Updates and nothing has been downloaded in the past week. I have turned off my firewalls (in both McAfee and Symantec Endpoint Protection). I have run the three NETSH reset commands with Administrator privileges. I have rebooted my machine numerous times. Nothing works.

View 1 Replies View RelatedOur wireless router is in a room at one end of the house (beside the telephone point) from which ethernet cables can connect to the Cat5 sockets taking the broadband to the other rooms that have a Cat5 socket. That is fine for connecting devices to the sockets in the other rooms but because the house is old with thick walls our wifi signal fades to nothing in some parts of the house. Moving the wireless router only moves the problem to another area. I thought about a wifi repeater but the room I would like to locate it in to then boost the signal to the rest of the house is borderline on the range for the wireless router. Is it possible to connect another wireless router or device to the main wireless router through the Cat5 cabling so that the second router/device can offer wifi to that area of the house?

View 15 Replies View RelatedI have a question relating to installing lines underground in a conduit.
We've had several lines get hit by lighting which leads to the line being bad, equipment being damaged and so on. We've then installed a new cat6e cable WITH lightning arrestors which were blown almost instantly on the first storm. This is obviously a bad ground issue, and a risk to the equipment.
This being said, I would like very much to run fiber optic cable in this conduit and then convert it to ethernet, but I don't know if fiber is susceptible to lighting like ethernet cable is, OR if there are other methods to prevent this freak of nature crap!
I have CAT5 cables run throughout my house to a few different jacks. They plug into my modem downstairs. I want to hook up my desktop internet through one of the wall jacks upstairs. View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a computer that is directly connected to my internet broadband service via my router and modem. From that computer, by use of a router (of course), I have a wireless connection to another desktop computer in my home, about 90 feet away. From that remote wireless internet broadband connection, I'd like to connect to yet a third computer. That third computer will be 200 more feet away. I have a direct Cat5 wire from the wireless computer desktop to that point 200 feet away. I'm thinking of adding a computer at that point. So, that raises my question: Can a computer receiving a wireless signal, then relay or transmit that signal to another computer that is "hard wired" to it via a Cat5 wire?
View 8 Replies View RelatedI have a Linksys/Cisco wireless router. For the purposes of a high def throughput, I have a wired connection from the router to a Windows Media Center appliance in a separate room. However, now I have a second media appliance (Roku device) that I want to run in a wired fashion as well. Here is the thing, I don't want to run a second Ethernet line from the router to new roku device. Is there some way I can share the existing ethernet line between the roku device and the media center appliance? Ideally, since the two devices would never be used at the same time, I was hoping some other network device (another router?) could be hooked up to split the line between the devices. Worst case, is there some simple splitter I can use? Obviously I am trying to avoid the worst case scenario: switching the ethernet connection manually between the two devices every time I want to go from one to the other.
View 6 Replies View RelatedIs there an easier way to connect an RJ45 connector to a Cat5 cable, rather than the traditional method of lining up the wires by hand, inserting them in the right order into the jack, and then crimping it? It just seems like it would be very tedious if you had to do this A LOT, and I've had a good bit of practice. I saw that they make "EZ RJ45" jacks.. but do they make anything else that can make it easier? I'm asking out of curiosity, and not necessity. I have no problem wiring them, but it's just something that I hate to do (I think a lot of people would agree that it's not the most fun thing to do in the world of networking).

View 1 Replies View RelatedI live in a frat and I am currently researching how to design and configure the most efficient network for the house. However, one of the other big problems we have is connectivity of our ethernet cables. We have an IT room with 2 switches that feed ethernet cables to all parts of the house and connect to an ethernet box in the wall where we can simply wire in our internet connection. We have wireless routers too but to keep the bandwidth usage across the WAP's I want to let people use the wired connections. However, many of the connection in the house do not work at all. I plug in my laptop to the wall jack and it gives me the No Internet Access notice. I don't understand why it works in some rooms and not others. All jacks seem to go into the same switches at the other end so I cannot figure out what the problem could be.

Orginally we had the wireless router attached to the end of the cat 5 and then attached to the computer. We could not get a connection through this wire. We then took out the cable, and ran a new one, same issue. We took the same cable, cut it down to 25 feet, installed the router in the garage and we have an excellant connection. We then ran a new wire through the crawl space from the router. Same issue, no connectivity. Taking that cable out, cutting it down we ran the wires from the router to our computers in the garage. why a Cat5 cable would not work at 60Ft.?

Im not going to lie, I'm pretty much a beginner when it comes to switches. I have recently purchased a second hand 3512 XL which I have managed to connect to via PuTTY and the console cable. I have familiarized myself with access privileges and resetting passwords and locating the IP address, etc.
I am trying to connect the switch to Cisco Network Assistant however I am unable to connect to the switch over a cat5 on the first port (nothing else is on the network, just a server directly to the switch). I have tried pinging the switch from my server, and similarly I have tried pinging the server from the switch and each time there is 100% fail rate.
I have a WAG160N wireless gateway . Yesterday when i tried to power it on after a couple of seconds the power led was solid green and the Ethernet leds were blinking with no Ethernet cable attached to the router . The ethernet leds would keep blinking for minutes . I tried to use a screwdriver to do a hardware reset ( with power on ) and i noticed that the power led would start blinking green/red for minutes . I tried to use another wired router which i have for backup and it could connect to the internet normally without a problem.
What the green / red blinking power led means ( power led is green and then changes to red and then it starts over ) ?
I can't get a new IP from my ISP when my Cable modem router(EPC3925) is set to router mode, i have tried factory restore, unplugged etc..but still no luck. It changes each time i reset it when i set it to bridged only mode but then i won't be able to connect other devices to it since it doesn't uses DHCP in bridged only mode. It changes back to the IP i had when i set it to router mode. I don't want to change my router settings to bridged only because it would disconnect the other devices in my house. Why my ISP assigns the same IP address when it's set to router mode but assigns different IPs when it's set to bridged only, how is this possible ?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI just upgraded my cable modem from the Motorola Sufboard 5120 to the DOCSIS 3.0 capable 6120. Provisioned it with Comcast and their "Blast" service (supposedly it caps at 16 down, 2 up).
I had, in the past, used my desktop via N-format wireless (DWA-525 N-format PCI adapter and DIR-655 N-format router) to do a speedtest.net test. I was getting 16 down and 2 up (as advertised). When I switched to the 6120, I did a speedtest.net test again to see what kind of gains, if any, I was getting. Turns out, I was getting 20+ down (nice improvement) and 1/2 Mbps up (a fourth of what I used to be getting?). Called Comcast. They "sent signals" (don't they always?) and claimed that it fixed it. My download speeds increased a smidge (about 22), but my upload speeds were still .5. Called Motorola, they had me do a few things and now I get 1 Mbps up and 27 - 30 down via wireless.
My download speeds are great. I'm content with that. If I hardwire from the cable modem directly to a ****py old laptop, a speedtest.net shows 4 Mbps up. So why do I get such a high upload speed when hardwired (4 Mbps), but a fraction of it (1/4th) when wireless? I'm not using any other devices to sap bandwidth (some are connected -- i.e. another desktop, my Droid phone, etc., but aren't actively pulling packets). And why would it go from 2 up (on my desktop via wireless in the past) to only 1 up (via wireless now) when the setup is the same across the board (as best I recall) other than upgrading my cable modem.
Since I get 4 up when hardwired straight off the cable modem, I assume my DIR-655 is slowing me down somehow. How to pick up the pace a bit? I've already tried the standard "power cycling", etc.
Oh, and the reason I go wireless -- my cable modem and wireless router are in my game room in the basement for my PS3. My desktop computer (and the wife's desktop computer) are two floors directly above it in our "office". Signal strength is "excellent" ... always has been. And again, pretty much everything is the same.

View 2 Replies View RelatedOur family has about three computers that use a wireless network that we all share. We have an old Gateway, a WCG200, that is bridged to an E2000, which was set-up ever since we required better security when someone used our connection to illegally obtain movies. We got a letter which warned us of any future violations that could cause legal action, so we looked into our wireless connection to better secure it from any other individuals outside of our household. The WCG200 is connected to the outlet in the wall via cable, and then connects from the Ethernet to the E2000. The E2000 has a stronger security setup than the WCG200, which is the advice we received from our ISP and would allow us to keep the Gateway. It provides a strong signal, but from time to time, we suffer latency or slow loading through all of our online devices, even though our connection speed displays a solid 72.0 Mbps. I've tried the Event Viewer to see any problems, and I have noticed some small things:
- WLAN AutoConfig service has successfully stopped.Wirel?
- WLAN Extensibility Module has stopped. Module Path: C:WindowsSystem32cmihvsrv64.dll
- The server {E10F6C3A-F1AE-4ADC-AA9D-2FE65525666E} did not register with DCOM within the required timeout.
- Broadcom NetLink (TM) Gigabit Ethernet: The network link is down. Check to make sure the network cable is properly connected. [This last one is strange, since I use the Wireless Network Connection with a DW1501 Wireless-N WLAN Half-Mini Card, while the Broadcom adapter is under the Local Area Connection and displayed as not connected.]
Other than that, I'm not quite sure what the recurring problem comes from. Our WCG200 has a firewall enabled and our E2000 has an SPI firewall enabled. The security mode of the E2000 is a WPA2 setup. We have disabled the wireless network of our WCG200 in order to make use of the E2000.

At the moment I cant run an ethernet cable through my house from my router to my desktop PC (Which is where I use the internet/play games etc) and connect directly that way because my parents dont want cables going through the house etc etc.For the past 2 months or more I used my old laptop to pick up the wireless connection downstairs then I bridged the connection and used my ethernet cable from the laptop into my PC/Xbox or whatever, no problems until today, I wouldnt even have to log into the laptop, i would just turn it on and leave it at the login screen and I would have internet on my desktop/Xbox.Tried to do that today and was getting unidentified network on my desktop, i dont know what the problem is, I can connect directly to my router with the ethernet (I tried it) but not the old way anymore, i'm on the laptop now on the wireless internet. In network connections there LAN network isnt there anymore, its just the 'Unidentified Network' which is the bridged connection.
