My internet comes in at one end of the apartment and then needs to travel about 60 feet and through three walls to get to the other end. Currently, the signal makes it about 25 feet through one wall and then fades. Should I use two extenders?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI recently moved into a new apartment complex where Internet is included with the rent, meaning that I do not have a personal Internet connection. Instead, the apartment company has a general connection along with a router on each floor of the complex. They then wire out from that connection to an ethernet port in each apartment. Because of that, calling the Internet company doesn't work because they can only tell me that the router on my floor is getting an Internet connection (and unfortunately my apartment is too far away from that router to have signal strength to use it for wireless). Most tenants plug their personal routers into the ethernet ports and use them for wireless connection within their apartments.
When I try to plug my router in, I cannot connect. I get an error message saying that there is no Internet connection. When I plug my Mac directly into the ethernet port, I still get no Internet connection. I've even tried plugging my netbook (PC) in, and get nothing. I have tried network diagnostics, I have used multiple ethernet cables, nothing. The previous tenant apparently plugged her router into the same ethernet jack I am using and had no problems. She has been gone for a few months, and now I cannot connect.

1) We would have around 200 users at max (accounting for people to have more than one device or computer connected. Such as Xbox360 and whatnot). What speeds should we consider from a ISP.?
2) Should we get more than one ISP feed?
3) How many wireless access points should we get? (Ruffly we are looking at 5-6)
4) Where should the WAP's be placed around the complex? Considering the apartments are brick outside and inside regular wood frame/drywall construction type. Also should they be inside or outdoor WAP's.
5)What hardware should be considered? (switches, WAP's, ect...)

View 1 Replies View RelatedI own a Dell XPS M1330 laptop (Windows 7 Home Premium 32 bit, service pack 1) that is about three and a half years old. I realize this Dell model has been discontinued. Work with me here. I STRONGLY believe after 6+ hours of personal troubleshooting that the laptop model is NOT the problem. I have lived at the same apartment complex the entire time I have owned this laptop. Up until a month ago when a new management company (the third one I’ve had) took over, I was able to use the free WiFi they offer at the office and the laundry room without one single speck of a problem weekly for YEARS. Suddenly I am getting: Unidentified Network: No Internet Connection with a public park bench (which it is a public network, I suppose) and a “!” over my perfect five bar signal. Therefore, we can rule out signal strength as the problem. I have a Dell Wireless 1395 WLAN Mino-Card, the card that came pre-installed with the laptop when I bought it brand new. Also, I know the Dell Wireless Card WLAN Utility is installed on this computer but I’ve always used Windows Network and Sharing Center to control the WiFi network I am connected to. I saw something somewhere about this maybe being the problem but since I’ve never used it I don’t think it has anything to do with my problem…
Talk about the router will be brief as it is my apartment complex they will not allow me access to the router so I know virtually nothing other than it is a Cisco wireless router, there are three office computers connected to it that run the internet just fine, and DCHP is enabled on both my laptop and the router (I may or may not have snuck in against their wishes to figure this one out…).
Also noteworthy are two things. One: I can connect to about a dozen other public WiFi networks around the city malls, coffee shops, bookstores, the college campuses, ECT. So connecting to WiFi is not the problem, this WiFi network specifically is (AKA. My NIC is NOT dead). I can also connect to my boyfriend’s private network at his house. The second thing worth noting is that once, I got the manager to cave and re-set the router for me. It connected! I re-started my computer and it still connected! I took my laptop back to my apartment, brought it back re-booted an hour late and it still connected! The next morning; back to the same old annoying problem. I asked him if they did ANYTHING with the computers at night and he said no.
As I stated, I have 6+ hours of troubleshooting pre-done on this problem. I have tried what I am able to with no access to the router (okay, maybe I snuck in and did a couple more things…) including:
Re-start laptop.
Re-start router.
Disable all firewalls/virus protection programs/ect.
Connect to the internet in Safe Mode.
Disable Bonjour.
Uninstall wireless card/re-install wireless card/un-install drivers/re-install drivers/update drivers.
Reset the TCP/IP stack.

I want to connect to the Internet small office where docsis (internet over tv cable) is used as WAN.For similar tasks but other WANs (adsl, dial-up) I used 800 series. But now I can't find anything in this series to solve my issue. There is 815 but it has no wi-fi.
I can use cable modem that my ISP gave to me: this modem acts as bridge so I can use router with FE-based WAN but it is better to have one device instead of two.
I have a laptop that I take to work, and would like to set things up to use my home internet connection from elsewhere. I don't have another computer to function as a server for me at home, so would like to do it so that my router alone provides this access (log into it from the internet anywhere and use my internet as if I am using it from home). How would I go about doing this? Would it require installing new firmware?

Last night I accessed the Internet at home via my USB Internet dongle (actually an O2 mobile phone). Today neither works. We have AT&T (DSL, not cable) and it used to connect just fine but then I moved out, left everything plugged in exactly as it was and when I came back it wouldn't connect.It connects to the LAN but not to the internet. When I go in cmd to type ipconfig the DNS suffix is blank on that computer but says gateway.2wire.net on my wireless laptop. You see, about two or so years ago on this very laptop, it was just another day where I booted up my laptop and was going to get a good day of wasting time on the internet underway. I tried to open Firefox, and I got prompted to download an apparent update for the browser. Obviously I went along with it because it seemed pretty routine and identical to how Firefox had updated in the past.
After the update was all done and dusted, I found myself unable to connect to the internet through Firefox. I would just get a constant stream of "Unable to connect" messages. I thought it might have been a problem on my end since back then I had rather wishy washy internet. So I let it settle for a while. Later on that day I talked to a few of my buddies over Xbox Live and asked if they'd had any similar issues with the new Firefox update because at the time, we all used it and hadn't quite jumped ship to Chrome just yet. But no matter who I asked, I always got the same response "I didn't get any update." Which as you can imagine, confused me quite thoroughly.
My computer it connected to the internet wirelessly but i cant broswe the web or play video games online. I am an avid world of warcraft player but it tells me i cannot connect to the launcher. The laptops that connect to the same internet work just fine though. I have tried to connect through an ethernet cord with no luck.

ISP: Wow! Cable - 15/1Mbps
Modem: Motorola SB6121 (new)
Router: D-Link DIR-655 (new) Firmware 2.00NA
When the internet disconnects:
- Both the LAN & the WAN are affected, but I do not lose any wireless connectivity with the router itself.
- I am able to log into the router wirelessly but cannot access the modem.
- If I plug my laptop directly into the modem, I can connect to the internet.
- When I reboot (using the on/off switch on the surge protector), everything comes back up.
There are a couple of other wireless routers nearby with fairly strong signals, but they appear to be running on different channels.
My phones are DECT 6.0, so there shouldn't be any interference problems with those.
I've been poking around this forum, and have already made some setting changes that seem to be consistently recommended:
- Ensured DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual
- Turned off ALL QoS (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
- Turned off Advanced DNS Services
- Turned on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
- Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router.
- Ensured devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
- Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.
- Using mixed G and N signal mode
- My security setting is WPA-Personal. WPA2-PSK
