D-Link DIR-655 :: Upload Test Error Test With Speednet

May 3, 2011

Question re:  DIR-655; Hardware ver A4; Firmware version 1.32NA

During bandwidth tests to several sites (principally speedtest.net) I get ping times of 10-11 ms, download speeds of 12+ to 17+ mbps but failure on upload tests using my DIR-655.

When I bypass the 655 and test directly with my cable modem, all (including upload) tests work reliably and consistently.

I have swapped the two ethernet cables involved as well as replacing both with new cables but the results are the same (uploads fail with 655 and work without it)

I have seen several postings over the the last year with this same problem but have never seen any comment from D-Link, or a solution from any reader.

Not that it should have any bearing, but I have TA785GE-128M motherboard and am running Windows 7 (patch current) on COMCAST

is this problem acknowledged by D-Link and is there a solution?

Home Network :: Playing MPEG-2 File In Webpage From Home Server?

Dec 20, 2012

I have setup a webserver on my home PC and I have forwarded port 80 on my router to the IP adress of the PC that is running the web server. The web server is working great; I can get to my web pages from outside of my home by going to http://MyIpAddress/Anyway, the problem is with the Windows Media Player plugin I'm using. I want to embed 6GB MPEG-2 videos into my web pages. I have some videos on my PC and I want to be able to watch them remotely by connecting into my web page. It works fine when I'm at home; other PCs can connect and play the videos no problem. The problem is when I'm at work. When I'm at work, I go to my web page (via my IP address in a web browser) and the Media Player plugin says "Connecting" for a minute, then it says Ready, but the video will not play. I tried using a smaller, AVI file (680 MB) instead to see if the problem was streaming such a large file, but the video still would not play.Do I need to foward more ports on my router so that Windows Media Player can connect back and get the information it needs?

Setting Up A DNS Server On Home Network

Jan 18, 2011

I have a small home network. My goal is to use Windows Server 2003 R2 to setup a DNS Server that can create a few simple names for some devices on my LAN, such as my printer. My DNS server will forward other inquiries (like google.com) to OpenDNS. Additionally, I don't want to setup a domain controller for my network. I wish to continue using workgroups, how to setup a Windows DNS Server on a workgroup. My biggest confusion is the FQDN of my name server. By default, it's setup as "server.", where 'server' is the name of my Windows Server 2003 machine. My workgroup is named 'Home'. So I tried 'server.home', but this does not resolve. What DNS suffix do my other machines on the network use by default? Is my domain name on the network really my workgroup name? Another thing I want to avoid is configuring a DNS Suffix for every single client machine on my network in their NIC properties for IPv4. I have a D-Link router, and if I do an "ipconfig /all" on my machine, I see that my DNS suffix is 'router', which is the name of my D-Link router. I try setting my DNS Server FQDN as 'server.router' and that doesn't work either, so I'm out of ideas.

Router Configuration For Home Server

Oct 9, 2011

I'm trying to run a server for a java application called mekwars. The program needs ports 2347 and 4867 open. I have obtained an ip address from my ISP and registered with dyndns. I can ping my public ip address (my router)I can access my server from any other computer in the LAN. My router is a Zyxel p660hn-T1a. I have configured port forwarding of both ports to my server.I have disabled the firewall in the router and restarted it.My server is running CentOS 6. I have opened the ports in the server iptables, I don't think this is the issue as I can connect from my lan to the server. When I try to connect (from within my lan) to the public ip address of my server the program tells me it cannot find the server. I can't telnet to port 2347 and nmap tells me that the only ports that are open are 22, 23 and 80 ( I believe this are open by default on the router to allow remote management).I can telnet from the lan. My networking isn't great and I'm used to having an "ip passthrough" option on the router to assign to my server. I do have it set as the default router in port-forwarding so I had hoped this would be a similiar option.

Do I have to set a static route in addition to port forwarding or could I have port forwarding configured incorrectly? I'm also considering the router may be at fault and I've emailed my ISP to make sure they're not filtering the ports before they reach my router.

Home Network :: Connect To Application On Server?

Feb 11, 2011

How do you access an application that is in the server? Like what extra steps you gotta make? Are they software related or do I have to do some configuration on the router or switch? Heres a little example:

Assume you have a group of computer connecter to a switch, this switch is connected to a router which has the connection to your ISP. On the router, you also have connected a server farm for your network and all the apps are stored there, say MS Word, Excel and such. Now, you have your network running, every ping comes out successful, so you know you did that part right, so the next part is to get the host use the MS Word or any other app in that server. How do you do that? Is there something that need to be configured on router/switch or is it with a software on your host? If its a software, whats the name of it and how you make it work?

Registering A FQDN And DNS For Home Use To Connect To Server?

Mar 26, 2011

I have a video hosting server on vmware and I need to be able to connect to it through it's domain name. It needs a FQDN. On it's network config it has spaces to enter in FQDN, IP, Subnet, and two DNS. It must use FQDN to connect through http.I was told I can just open up the system32/driver/etc/host file and edit in the info, ex: 1.1.1.2 [URL] I tried to ping 1.1.1.2 and it does ping, and I even tried to ping [URL] and it pings (not connected to the web). But I can't get the web interface to connect when i put in server.com:8080 (needs 8080) into my web browser. FYI, I have no idea about the DNS space on the server, I just put in some random number. Why does this server need a DNS anyways? This computer is not connected to the web or any other computer. It's just this computer and the vmware server on it.

Home Network :: Hosting Multiple Websites On Server?

Jan 8, 2012

I had setup 2 servers at home. I'm now in need of hosting 4 websites. I have 4 static public ip's. I'm currently using a router with DD-WRT firmware installed. I have setup up as static NAT. X.X.X.27 to 192.168.0.100, X.X.X.28 to 192.168.0.101. This is my current setup for the existing 2 webservers which host a website each. I notice apache allows for multiple websites per server. One of the server's is a dell 2500 with 2 NIC's and will not be a problem assigning two ip's. The second server only has 1 NIC. Should I buy another NIC card for the second server or could I get by using a virtual NIC? The load on the servers isnt heavy. Only bout 20 clients connect to them daily.
