Limiting Bandwidth On A Laptop Using M1424WR FiOS Router?
May 15, 2011
I currently use Verizon FiOS 20/5. The speed has been great until the day my cousin and his parents moved in. They also use our FiOS connection and I have came to the conclusion that my cousin's laptop is eating away all of the bandwidth which makes all devices using FiOS have extremely slow internet speeds. I know it is his computer because I logged in as admin to the Verizon FiOS page (192.168.1.1) and I saw that he is using several P2P applications and downloading torrents as well. Is there a way I can limit the bandwidth he is using so that the internet speed can improve? I looked at the QoS tab and tried to play around with the settings, but I don't want to mess it up. The router I have is Actiontec M1424-WR (Verizon FiOS 20 Down/5 Up). A lot of sources I am reading says that I have to use the QoS, but I don't know how to use it on the site.

I live in rural Alaska and use satellite internet with 1.5mbps rate and 4gb rolling weekly download limit. I was wondering if there are any wireless routers I can buy that I can set a bandwidth limit for the specific router. Due to teenage girls in the house we hit the weekly limit in a day or two because of all the music videos and such that they watch on you tube, it is annoying getting limited to the 256kbps download rate so often.

So my ISP (Telus) recently replaced our old router with a ZyXEL VSG1432. I'm currently having a huge lag issue when my roommates laptop is connected to our network. He is connected via wireless, I'm wired. So I did some searching around and I think i can solve this by limiting his bandwidth with QoS settings. I'm getting conflicting information here though. After logging into the router there are no QoS options yet according to ZyXEL's website url...This router should have the settings available. Is it possible that Telus does something to remove this feature? Is there some not so obvious way to enable QoS? Is there some other way to limit the bandwidth?

I will have this one router. Its f0/0 will be for the Internet connection with bandwidth of 30Mbps. Its f0/1 will be connected to a switch for internal networks. This link will be separated to 3 VLANs for 3 internal networks. I'm wondering if there is a way to gurantee 10Mbps for each VLAN but allow use up to 30Mbps when another two VLANs are not using any Internet bandwidth? I only worry about download bandwidth from internet. The 3 internal networks will all have public IPs and they belong to their own subnets. There won't be NAT/PAT.

I am a gamer living in my apartment with a room mate who loves to download music 24/7 and a girlfriend who loves to watch netflix. Needless to say, every time I go to play a video game I get shitty ping and lots of lag. From what I've gathered, DD-WRT's QOS is ****, and Tomato is the way to go in 3rd party firmware.

Without using another box as a router preferably. My Cisco Linksys router doesn't have any options for this but I heard you could possibly install some 3rd party firmware to get around that. This would be a last resort for me What I'm hoping for his some piece of software that could do this

I Just got FIOS internet at Home with 43 Mbps down and 32 up (measured speed). I replaced the included router with my old reliable RV042 (V1) VPN router that I used with my old service in NY LI. This has been working very stable for week or two, but I use my old 042 to remote desktop via VPN from my work, that was limited to maybe 9-10 Mbps (Home to office) way down from the 32 up I have now (the office has 80Mbps down). So I researched that the RV220W had a VPN speed that was much faster and I ordered one that I am trying this weekend.Out of the box, I plugged accessed and just clone the MAC at the WAN port to match the replaced FIOS router. Power cycle and surprise, no IP from FIOS!. After trying a number of things, I gave up and updated the firmware to the last 1.0.2.4, and that fixed this. I still need to clone the MAC to void calling Verizon FIOS, but at least I get IPs and Internet with no trouble.Next, I configured a couple forwards for two web servers. I found about the bug in this same forum and just used the rules instead. Working good so far.
So now I test WAN bandwidths, and I found all kind of trouble. With the old RV042 and similarly to the included Verizon router I can do steadily 43d/32u. Especially at night is quite stable in these numbers. When I went and move the cables to the RV220W (exact same set up) the speed went all over the map from 4d/8u to 43d/25u. If I power cycle the box, things tend to be stable again around 43d/25u. So, after a while being stable in these numbers I start trying things to improve the 25u that should be around 32u, and recover the missing 7 mbps. Not much I can think, so I just randomly enabled the QoS settings trying to reserve full BW for my tests, and I found just that enabling WAN QoS, and nothing else, no profiles or changes in the Priority Settings, I go up to 30u consistently over a number of tests. This do not affect the down speed that is stable at 43 mbps. The surprising thing, is why this affect to the up speed when nothing else is going on in my network? and also where are the other 2 Mbps to complete the 32 Mbps that I can do with the RV042 (V1) or the cheap included router? In my opinion, if I don't use QoS, I should get full bandwidth to whatever application/computer that requests so, period.

I run a business and have customers who would like to use my wireless internet. I previously had a completely open network that I would allow them to use, until someone illegally downloaded a movie and got us in trouble. I would like to allow use of the network again, but limit activities like this. Basically, so they could only do basic web browsing, etc.

We have two Cisco 2811 Routers setup with a GRE tunnel that we would like to constrain the bandwidth on to replicate a satellite connectinon of 400 kbits. We tried the bandwidth command 400, but from what I understand that is only for routing metrics and not actual speed of the interface.

I have a SG 300-20 small business switch and I would like to restrict bandwidth by gateway ip address but not by physical port or LAG. On the web interface, I can only do bw limiting per port or lag. I want to do bandwidth limiting by the IP addresses that I assign to vlans that my hosts use as a gateway ip.

I have a Cisco ASA5510 with two Cisco Catalyst 3560G switches plugged into it. Then I have 2 Cisco1400 Aironet WAPs plugged into the switches.
My goal is to limit incoming bandwith for two specific vlans. So users who are plugged into the switch or connected to the wifi can't go bandwidth crazy.
The rule I currently have setup on the ASA5510 is limiting internal bandwidth, I know shame on me.
So how do I setup a rule on the ASA5510 that will limit users external traffic on vlans without limit internal lan traffic?

I have an RV220W which I would like to set bandwidth limiting on. When we upload files to yousendit or an FTP server, it saturates the connection and essentially stops any other traffic until the upload is finished. Looking at the manual, it looks like it should do this, but does not seem clear to me.

My QA team needs to test number of special connectivity scenarios where their wireless connection has a limited bandwidth.Ideally, I would like to provide them number of SSIDs each of which has different bandwidth limitation. But so far I did not find a way to apply any bandwidth limitations to my 2504 Wireless controller and the 3602E AP.QoS has only 4 pre-defined modes which can't be set to a specific limit.

I recently moved in with a friend, and we're having trouble setting up file sharing. His PC is connected directly (via ethernet cable) to an Actiontec M1424WR wireless router, which is broadcasting a WEP-secured wireless network. My PC is connected wirelessly (via an RNX-N180UBE usb adapter). Both machines are running Windows 7. Internet access is great. We tried to set up a homegroup, however, and are getting nothing but problems. He created a homegroup on his PC, gave me the password, and I joined on my PC. It said it joined and asked me what I wanted to share, but that's as far as we can get.
- On his PC, when he goes to the Homegroup page, it says "no other Homegroup computers are available."
- On my PC's Homegroup page, I see his computer name listed, and when I open it it shows libraries, but when I double click them it nothing happens
- He right-clicked his "downloads" folder and did "share with -> Homegroup;" I see it in my PC's Homegroup page but when I try to open it, the system thinks for a while before popping up a "cannot access" message
- I also shared a folder of mine to the Homegroup but, since he can't even see my PC, he can't see the folder
- I ran IPCONFIG on both machines; his machine's IP is 192.168.1.2; my machine's IP is 192.168.1.5
- When I ping his machine from my machine, I get "request timed out"
- When I ping my machine from his machine, I get replies.
- When I ping the router from my machine, I get replies.
- He has a printer. On my Homegroup page, it tells me that it has detected a new printer, but the "Install Now" button does nothing.
I've gone into Network and Sharing Center -> Advanced Sharing Settings and enabled "Allow Windows to manage homegroup connections." I did this on both machines. He runs a VPN on his machine. Thought that might be the problem, so we turned it off but nothing changed. I run both Hamachi and Tunngle on my machine. Disabled both of those but nothing changed.

I have a Cisco 1751 that I wanted to use to create another network behind my Actiontec m1424wr Verizon router. My plan was to connect a linksys wrt54gs to the Cisco router for device connectivity. And I wanted everyone else in the house to still be able to use the Verizon router as expected. I know this is probably not the best way to create an internal network. But I am studying for the CCNA & CEH and just wanted to use the Outdated Cisco IOS on the 1751.

I have that red gigabit router with the 150/65 service. It connects via ethernet for internet and has a coax to transmit the guide data etc.So my idea was to just leave the Verizon router connected and on (with wi-fi off) so it could do the TV stuff and just plug my router into the ethernet wall port the Verizon guy installed. Not so easy of course, my E4200 will not recognize the ethernet from my ONT (I think that's what the device they put in my basement is called) and the internet doesn't work. I have factory reset the router. The reason I am doing all this is because the wireless range of the e4200 at 2.4ghz is near unmatched and given my house, the actiontech cannot reach my room.

I connected EA6500 internet port to actiontec router provided by Verizon fios. I don't have any other way to connect as FIOS connection is coax to actiontec modem. I must take a drop from actiontec to internet port on EA6500.
With that said, I can't get EA6500 to work, it keeps saying no internet. The only way I can get it to work is when I set it to bridge mode. This makes my EA6500 a dumb switch/access point. I didn't spend $200 for a switch. I need to use advanced features offered by this router but I can't until this problem is fixed. I made sure I am running latest version of firmware (1.1.28.146856).
I have reset my fios router as well as ea6500 to factory defaults multiple times.

Set up a repeater for their house to get a better signal in locations farther from their main router that is a Verizon Actiontec M1424-WR Rev. C. I am recommending that he get an old router (Linksys wrt54GL or E2000) that I can convert into a repeater with DDWRT firmware as a cheap solution, or with a purpose built Netgear or Linksys range extender repeater as a more $ solution.

My Netgear Rangemax PCI picks up the signal at 68% and connects to the router. But periodically it disconnects from the router and i click connect to a network icon and it shows that i have no wireless internet as if no PCI card is installed so i wait a min then it shows up again and windows network diagnostic kicks in and "resets the network adapter" and all is well for about 15min till it disconnects again.
