Linksys Wireless Router :: E2500 Constantly Dropping Connections
Sep 27, 2011In the last three weeks I replaced a Linksys WRT54G wireless router with a new E2500. The only reason this was done because the store salesman indicated I should get much better performance over my router that was probably 5 years only.
Since the install I have had nothing but issues. I could never get on PC runing XP to connect. It worked one day and the next morning I could never get it to connect again. I even removed the encryption and went to WEP with no luck. My laptop that I loaded the software on and initially did the connection I didn't have an initial problem. The problem I now have is the wireless connection is constantly dropping. In the course of an hour the connection probably drops 3 to 4 times. If you leave the PC for several hours, you may need to sign of your user and resign in to get the wireless connection to work. This is an experiment gone bad. My old router never dropped a connection and every PC in the house stayed connected forever. This new router is located the same distance as my original one was, but is nothing but a series of failed connection.

Mar 28, 2012I just bought and set up an E2500 wireless router this evening. Using the default settings (as applied by the Cisco setup CD), I was experiencing pitiful range, with signal dropping to 2 out of 4 bars just one room (about 20 feet away). (Previously, using the exact same physical setup with the same computer and a single-band Belkin n150 router, I always had 4 out of 4 bars in that room).
I entered an online live tech chat, and after some back and forth, the tech rep had me change the settings as follows:
(1) Rename the SSID to separate the two bands: One network SSID for the 5GHz band, another for the 2.4GHz.
(2) Turn off auto-channel for both networks: Set 5GHz to stay on channel 36. Set 2.4GHz to stay on channel 1.
(3) The 5GHz is set to use 20/40 MHz width, while the 2.4GHz is set to use only 20MHz width, but I believe those were the defaults already in place.
Then he promptly ended the chat, so we didn't get to finish. Nonetheless, with these settings in place, I am now getting a steady, uninterrupted 4 bars in the next room, using the 5GHz network SSID. Because we were disconnected, I have a few questions remaining:
(1) Is it normal to get such terrible range using the default settings (that's make for a lot of unhappy customers and a lot of extra calls to tech support)? Or does this indicate a problem with my router? (This was a Cisco certified refurbished model)
(2) Which change 'fixed' the problem: Was it separating the two bands into different SSIDs, or locking the channels rather than using Auto channel?
(3) Was this just intended as a test to troubleshoot the problem, or am I supposed to leave the router configured this way? (Since we were disconnected, I didn't get to follow up with the tech rep after changing the settings.) With it configured this way, I'm connecting devices that can find the 5GHz network to the 5GHz network's SSID, and the other devices that can't find it, I'm connecting to the separate SSID for the 2.4GHz network. Seems unnecessarily messy to have 2 SSIDs.

Aug 1, 2011I set up my new E2500 last week, and it works fantastic with every device (iPad, 2 iPhones, iMac, DLink usb, ...) EXCEPT my iMac. That connects, but loses the connection very frequently (say at least every half hour) and I need to turn wifi off and on to get it to reconnect.
I've ensured that the iMac has all system updates, and I've checked that the E2500 is the latest firmware.
I've reverted to my old WRT54G for now, I'll have to return the E2500 if it won't work consistently with the iMac.

Jun 27, 2011I have a toshiba a215-s7437. I bought this router upgrading from the usual netgear router that everyone and there mother has(wrt54g or something?). The routers are in the same exact spot...less than 6 feet from the computer with no obstructions. No matter WHAT i do, even if i put the router on top of the laptop keyboard, over time, usually a matter of minutes, it starts dropping my link speed. My old netgear ever went below 54, EVER. Even if i was out on the porch.It will connect at 54 mbps, then go to 36, etc etc until we get to 1mbps. I have had other friends bring laptops over, same exact thing happens to them. I am viewing the link speed through windows task manager to get these readings. Though i can't see the link speed on my android phone or xbox, it seems over time they get slower also. I have tried googling the hell out of this issue to no avail. I do have the latest firmware. I have also tried searching these cisco forums and have not found any topics pertaining to this (maybe i just suck at searching). I have comcast at 15mbps and i do know that whether it is 54 or 36, it's not gonna be any faster. But just the fact that it falls the whole way to 1 is not acceptable. My fix for this at the moment is just disconnecting and reconnecting real quick, and i always start back out at 54 mbps. Sometimes I will get lucky and it will stay at that point for 20-30 min?

I can connect and load maybe 2 pages before that little yellow triangle of doom appears. Then after 2 or 3 minutes I am good and can reconnect. This cycle just keeps happening.

Feb 20, 2012I am using the E2500 with the Wireless N-pci adapter with dual band, both with the latest drivers / firmware, and I am getting extremely low signal quality and connection speed when connecting to the 5 Ghz network.My computer is no more than 15 feet away from the router, and on the same level. I also verified the connection with the 2.4 Ghz band, and it reads as excellent, and with 54 mps. Using 5 Ghz I get one bar of signal quality (very poor) and no more than 13 mps connection speed.

Apr 6, 2012I just bought an e2500 to replace my WRT54g, hoping that it would fix my call dropping problem. I had tried installing some friend recommended third party firmware on the WRT54g that he said would fix my problem, and with my infinite technological wisdom and experience ended up bricking it.
My problem is that randomly during skype calls with my family back home, I will lose internet connection. It drops the skype call and then I cannot open a web page or anything for about 60 seconds. My internets dead, then it just starts working normally again by itself. I can have anywhere from 60 seconds of connectivity up to 20 minutes or more while skyping. This all happens over a wired connection. Changing the router didn't change a thing, the problem still happens in exactly the same way. I have good bandwidth and all that stuff.Also, I watch netflix on my Xbox 360 over a wireless connection. Sometimes it will just lose connection in the middle of a show. However, the difference is that I can reconnect almost instantly after an interruption on that device. I have fixed the settings on the two different channels according to one of the other post I found in this community, and have not tried those settings out yet. This doesn't worry me as much as the wired connection issues.
Linksys Wireless Router :: E2500 Has A Slow Oscillating Signal
May 1, 2012I upgraded my WRT54N to an E2500 in November 2011 and I am now having problems with a slow signal that oscillates according to Speedtest.net. Results with the router are a ping of 300-500 ms and a wide variability on download speeds in a single test of 0.5 Mbps to 3 Mbps. When I bypass the router my results improve to a ping of about 65 ms and a constant download speed of about 4.25 Mbps which is the extent of what my ISP can offer due to my rural location. My network has two desktops (one Mac, one PC), an occasional MacBook Air, an occasional PS3 connection (though the variable signal has rendered the PS3 useless for online play), and my iPhone when I'm home.
So far, I have reset the router and ensured the latest firmware is installed. I also relocated the router to another section of the house, thinking it may be experiencing interference. Interestingly enough, I can unplug the router for 10 seconds, reboot it and it works great for about 30 seconds or long enough to run Speedtest a couple of times. Then it returns to the same slow, oscillating pattern.

Setup was easy to my laptop and XBox 360 but my Samsung Internet TV is another story. I can get my tv to get the wireless signal but when I click on an app nothing but error messages. Often times it will say to check my dns settings but I am not that tech savvy and don't know what to do.

Other times I keep connected to the network but there's no access to the Internet. Everything seems fine on the ISP's part, I can connect just fine directly from my modem, so I'm certain the problem is with the router. Besides, these problems are solved by just power cycling the router.

I'm able to have a great signal with my laptop but with my desktop computer I only have 2 bars out of 5 and the pages take forever to load. Jan 12, 2012I have a Dell Studio 1745 Laptop and its only a few years old, I recently upgraded my router to be wireless a year or so ago and have had a few d/c issues here and there but mostly has not been a problem.Recently I have had tons of d/c issues while playing warcraft or browsing the internet in general, anything really.So I made the mistake of recently updating my WNR1000V3 router's firmware from my laptop's wireless connection. After I did this I saw all sorts of warnings (none built into the firmware itself, sigh) that this was a big no no.
Since then my d/c issues have been horrible but what it does now is my connection will be completely normal then all of a sudden my wireless access point will switch to 'No Internet Access' and it will drop my internet.The only way I can get it back is to go into the other room and reset the router by either unplugging it, or pressing the reset button on the back, once it reboots and everything, my laptop sees the connection again, and it has Internet Access fine.Soo I went and made the problem much worse, the lame part of the situation is before I had this firmware issue I was getting this problem anyways.
I decided if I could flash a older version of firmware to the router using my desktop that is wired to the router I could then reupdate it to the current version,I found a old firmware version on netgear.com and went to upload it through the router login for my router, it then said the file format was unrecognizable or not the right one (it was a .img file). I even tried to mount the file and explore it, no go. I found another firmware version older than that and attempted to flash that to the router and it began to update, then gave me a warning that this firmware was older than my current, I click yes and my internet drops and the update never happens.
So if I did screw the modem up this way I have no idea how to fix it now I have reset it to factory settings but this doesn't affect the firmware version. I suspect the firmware has something to do with the recent problems because I have seen the 'Congratulations, You have setup your router and are connected to the internet" like 20 times these past 48 hrs.I downloaded Xirrus wifi inspector and have it running now.I tried the ip flush and release stuff, and a bunch of tricks ive seen on other forums.My system is Windows 7 with a Intel wi-fi link 5100 AGN network adapter. I have tried rolling back that network driver and messing with the advanced and tcp/ip settings.

- TX and RX packets dropping, also some errors.
-All new CAT 6 cabling between router and modem.
-Have tried all different wireless modes.
-Wired clients are working perfectly.
-Changed the DNS servers.

Feb 16, 2011I setup a D-Link DIR-825, VB1, Firmware V2.00NA about a month ago. We have 3 Macs here at home - 1 brand new iMac, a G4 Powerbook, and an old G4 / 933 Tower. The G4 tower is connected via ethernet. The other two through Wi-Fi. My problem is that I can barely use the internet for even a few minutes on the G4 tower, connected via Ethernet, without losing my connection. I can be in the middle of loading a page or an image, and suddenly it will say "Waiting for xxx.com". Then if I try to go to Google.com or something I will invariably get "Looking up xxx.com". The connection usually returns on it's own, but it can take up to 3 or 5 minutes. When I get this message on the ethernet G4 tower, I will also have lost connection on the wireless Macs. For the first couple of weeks the tower was not connected and we were just using the two wireless Macs, and they were working well. It seems that as soon as I hooked up the G4 tower via ethernet, connections became very flaky and intermittent all of a sudden.All the Macs are configured for DHCP. We have a Time Warner cable modem. The G4 tower had previously been used at my office with it's own dedicated DSL modem / router, and it worked flawlessly for months at a time without dropping a connection. I've tried rebooting the modem, then the router, then turning all the Macs back on, several times. Same result. I just tried loading the new firmware but it didn't work. Said the Gateway was too crowded or something.

Jun 15, 2012My wife, daughter, mother and I recently moved into a place together. Since moving in together, our internet connection has been less than reliable. We use a motorola modem and a DLink DIR615 router. I have a desktop with a wireless card, and my mother has an all in one with a wireless card, so we both connect wirelessly to the internet. We also use iPhones and a PS3 for internet purposes. The DLink is my router from my family's old place before moving with my mother. The motorola modem is my mother's from her place. Prior to sharing a household, I never had a problem with the router dropping signal. She, however, did have a problem with it. She was using the motorola and a netgear router. So, with that out of the way, here's what happens. The internet works fine and the network shows as available, but then suddenly the internet just goes out in all areas of the house. The network no longer shows as available. It's fixed by unplugging the router for about 10 seconds and then plugging it back in. I've tried talking to DLink about it, thinking it was a problem with the router. They even sent me a replacement router because we couldn't figure out the problem, but even with the new one it's still happening. I can also add that while we were waiting for the replacement, we connected my mother's Netgear and it continued happening. When the new DLink came, I confirmed that the router has the latest firmware as well, just in case. I can add that since sharing a network, we've been getting an IP Address conflict message on both computers. We both have Windows 7. Can anybody shed some light on this? I have some knowledge of this kind of stuff but what's happening is way beyond my scope.

Jan 17, 2012I have D-Link Amplifi N+600 Dual Band wireless router (Model: DIR-827) that was purchased a couple of months ago. I live in a house with a bunch of other university students so I would estimate we have about 18 devices that connect to the router such as laptops, mobile phones, and gaming systems. Every few hours our wireless router will just stop working and drop everyone's connection including the connection to the wired Ethernet ports. The light which is normally green on the front of the router turns yellow and will stay that way until the router is reset. The network still shows up on all the devices with full signal bars but no access.

Mar 28, 2012We have a home network which consists of one Motorola wireless router and 3 PCs. Two of the PCs connect directly to the wireless router without any issues, however, my PC dosent have a built in Wi Fi card so am using a TP Link wireless N USB adaptor.... so as you can imagine the signal is still very poor. So I have bought a TP Link AP and have it set up in repeater mode to increase the range of the router and thus improve my connection.
Now this works great in the short term as I get full signal, but the problem is the signal tends to drop out every 20 mins or so.Now, originally we were recieving an IP address conflict message which I thought was causing these drop outs, but I have rectified this by using MAC address filtering on the AP (think the AP was connecting to someone elses PC in our block of flats), but the drop outs still continue.
I have a static IP set on both my PC and AP and DHCP enabled on the Motorola router, I have also tried changing the Motorola's channel and moving the AP to different places but the story dosent change.I am a right noob when it comes to networking and have got this far by reading manuals, google searching and trail and error so dont know what else to do.
Losing Wifi Signal Intermittently Constantly
Dec 19, 2011I've been having a problem with my wifi connection.I give my neighbor $15 a month to use his connection, so I have no control over the router.I'll be surfing along or just checking mail or whatever and out of the blue my connection stops. A little yellow triangle "warning" sign covers the signal strength meter in the lower right corner. If I click on the signal meter, up pops the list of wireless connections available to me and says that I'm connected, (but I'm not). So I go to the network and sharing center and sometimes this alone will restart the signal but usually I have to run the troubleshooter and the signal will come back with no explanation of what the problem is.While in the network and sharing center, my connection to the router looks clear and connected but shows a red X over the connection between the router and Internet.
