Linksys Wireless Router :: EA6500 - Identifying Devices Causing High Usage?
Mar 28, 2013
I'm thinking of purchasing a Cisco Linksys EA6500. I need a router that can one monitor bandwidth used by device. Keep exceeding our ISP's network bandwidth allocation, need to identify the devices that are causing this high usage and be able to do so from the router. Does the EA6500's standard software support this, is their router software one can obtain for the unit that does this or is there another home router option that can perform this function?

Hardware Version : V5
Firmware Version : 22.05.2012

I have a TD-W8951ND v5 on the latest firmware.
I recently broke my broadband data cap which surprised me as I had not been using the internet much.
I only have tablet which I switched off having first checked the router to make sure there were no other wireless connections and adding MAC address filtering to be sure no one else was stealing my bandwidth. With just my router connected to the ISP, my ISP has recorded 170MB of downloaded data in 3.5 hours. Switching off the router stops the traffic being recorded (as you would expect), but when switched back on the large data transfers start up again.
I have plugged in an older router (not wireless) and no traffic is generated, so it seems to be the TP-Link router rather than my ISP or ADSL circuit that is at fault.

I have noticed from time to time I get many (15-20) "network devices" in the Device List with no MAC address. I notice this mainly when managing Parental Controls. I go and clean up the Device List and days later they reappear. Another interesting thing is that the computer I am writing this with (through the router) does not show up in the Device List and I have an IP address from the router. I have the latest firmware 1.1.28.146856. Does anyone else see this on their EA6500?

I have an EA6500 and have three AppleTV... all three generations.l I also have a DirecTV Genie and DirecTV HD-DVR that, together, provide whole-house viewing. When I first setup the EA6400 based network, all three AppleTVs were listed and my whole-house viewing worked. This past Saturday, however, that changed, when I couldn't see the programs recorded on the HD-DVR, from the Genie. My troubleshooting determined one of the AppleTVs had been assigned the same address as the HD-DVR upstairs and that the HD-DVR wasn't listed as being connected. Once I reset everything, the IPs resolved and the whole-house viewing was resolved, however, none of the AppleTVs are listed as connected, even though they are. I can check the connections by the AppleTV device and see that they do, indeed, have an IP address, and I can view material from the iTunes cloud or stored on another PC in the local network. I reset everything again, but to no avail. No AppleTV devies show as connected from Smart Wi-Fi. The AppeTVs are all wired to the LAN... not wireless.
So, the question is, is there a fix to get AppleTV devices to list? All of my devices and router have the lastest firmware. BTW, I had a WRT610N, which I'm now useing as an access point, didn't have this issue.

To preface this message I need to state that I am functionally illiterate when it comes to any kind of networking. I just replaced an old Linksys wireless-G router with a new Linksys EA6500 router. My needs are as follows: I am connecting 4 desktop computers (two personal and two business) via Ethernet cables. In addition there will be three smart phones, two DVD players and one game console connected wirelessly. In the future I will add a printer, hard drive and more wireless devices. After installing the hardware and running the setup disk all four computers wired with Ethernet cables worked fine (although they are not set up to communicate or share files with one another - they only need to access the internet. My problem is with the wireless connectivity. I cannot get any one of the wireless devices to work.

I got the new EA6500. For the last few days I've noticed there are multiple devices showing under one device with different IP addresses. In the beginning they show up individually with their own device names, then somehow combine. Each device is different ie. computer, phone, DirecTV box, etc. I did a hard reset, re-flash and still it keeps happening.

Although EA6500 states support for WPA devices it appears that some B devices (like HP Wi-Fi printer PSC 2510) are not supported. The lack of support seems due to the lack of WPA with TKIP encryption, only the newer EAS encryption appears to be available.

We purchased an EA6500 to take the place of the router function of a Verizon Westell 7500. We bridged the Westell, installed and set up the EA6500 and everything seems fine.
What is strange is that some devices on the network (our server, user PC, a NAS that isn't part of the domain) while accessible if you navigate to them via \ do not appear in the Network window.
This of course is causing issues for some users who don't or won't map network drives.
At first I thought this may be an issue related to us having some of our network devices with static IP addresses so we switched them over to dynamic - no change in the network window.
we will have to return this router and get a different brand/model if it won't work in this fashion.

Once your devices start showing up in your device list make a DHCP reservation for each device. (after confirming that no other devices are listed under it).
If you have a device that has multiple MAC & ip addresses under it you MUST first determine what the devices are listed & power-down before you can delete the device. Also note that some wired devices will still show as connected so you must have to either power down the device by pulling Th power cord OR disconnect the ethernet cable.

I have an issue with 7600 router where CPU goes up to 60-70% and memory is also high. Both due to BGP Router process. [URL] According to our baseline it should not be more than 40% at any given time. We see high CPU uptp 70% consistently.

A customer reported that their router experienced spikes (high cpu utilization) every 4 hours and claims that it is caused by snmp polling of the Ciscoworks server.
The process SNMP engine is the process that causes these spikes .We think that the job responsible of this periodic high CPU utilization. It's called "Vrf Collector Job" and it's runnning every 4 hours.Below the result of show stack PID and show version

I have 3560-24PS-S (ios version 12.2(35)SE1) that have high CPU (almost 100%) use at every inventory collection (each sunday) or polling (each day 6 a.m) during 2 or 3 minutes.
I read on the forum, that this could be due to some mib object polling failure, and could, perhaps, be solved by upgrading the ios version or configuring view preventing the poll of the problematic object.
But what view to configure ?Is there well known MIB objects to filter ? Which ones ? I did not see any bug related to my IOS version and this behavior in the bug toolkit ... I join some sh commands (unfortunately done when no problem). I will try to obtain the output of the sh command when the pb occurs.

Recently me and my girlfriend have been having issues with in game latency, receiving pings close to jittering to well over 300 where they were formerly in the 30-40s to identical servers. We live with a Chinese housemate who is extremely conscious of her privacy/personal space, we noticed a dirge of active ports on the router (both TCP and UDP) which seemed to have no association with any major application and assumed it was the old P2P boogie-monster. She is the only one who uses Wifi, an upon briefly deactivating the Wifi, all ping issues were instantly resolved. The bizarre thing is we still have plently of up/download bandwidth, I mean we're not swimming in a fibre optic connection but still a relatively healthy 1MB dl/70KB/s ul, more than enough for gaming.Deciding we needed a better idea of what was going on in the network, we downloaded Wireshark. We discovered a couple of things that might mean something, they might mean nothing at all:Firstly there was a deluge of random ARP requests coming from the suspect IP, something along the lines of:"who has 192.168.0.(random number) Tell (suspect computer's IP)"repeated over and over in bursts. A little googling found us this: Has Your Network been Now given that she is Chinese and is probably exposed to a lot of Chinese websites, is there any chance that this could be the root cause - could it drown the network to the extent that it produces terrible pings?Secondly there have been an inordinate amount of name queries coming from her IP to 192.168.0.255 (broadcast channel), they generally take the form of:
NBNS92Name query NB WPAD<00>
or
NBNS92Name query NB ISATAP<00>
and occasionally, it will name query my network id, leading to: (her ip being 192.168.0.3)
2144211275.734470000192.168.0.3 192.168.0.255NBNS92Name query NB (my id)<20>
2144231275.739314000192.168.0.3 (my id)TCP6658451 > netbios-ssn [SYN] Seq=0 Win=8192 Len=0 MSS=1460 WS=4 SACK_PERM=1
2144251275.741325000192.168.0.3 (my id)NBSS126Session request, to (my network id)<20> from (her network id)<00>
2144271275.744124000192.168.0.3 (my id)SMB213Negotiate Protocol Request
[code]....
Now combine this with the sometimes 9-10 active ports our router assigns to her IP (which don't appear to relate to anything according to numerous port id sites), does this send out a red flag to any of you? I realize it would be so much easier if I could get access to her computer, but as I said, she is very private and timid and doesn't seem to like even having people in her room, let alone letting them use her computer.

I'm attempting to create an erspan session between a Nexus 5000 and 6500 to get traffic from a FEX interface on the 5000 over to a sniffer off of the 6500. The Nexus and 6500 are directly connected with a 10G link, but I added a separate 1G link between the two for the erpsan traffic. I created a routed interface on the 6500, and and SVI on the Nexus. The Erspan session came up, and looked ok from both sides, but as soon as we got a burst of traffic this morning the CPU on the 6500 spiked to 99%. I used 'debug netdr capture rx' to determine the traffic was coming in from the erspan port and subsequently shut down the new interface on the 6500. why this caused a CPU spike? Here are the relevant configs from each device:
Nexus:
vrf context NetOps!
interface Vlan123
no shutdown

Since recently replacing my home router with a Linksys E2500, I have been getting Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) with my Company's VPN (AT&T). It only happens when I am running wireless with my E2500. If I am hooked up to my E2500 through a ethernet cable it doesn't happen. I have updated the BIOS on my Lenovo Thinkpad T410 and ensured all of my drivers are up to date. I am 99.9% sure the problem is caused by my Linksys E2500 because I have used my laptop on other wireless routes at work and school and never get this problem. I am also ensured that my E2500 has the current firmware installed and upgraded my Company's VPN to the most current level to no avail.
I am getting DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL Blue Screen of Death in agnfilt.sys.

For some reason, I have been trying to use QOS for several network related jobs (VPN, streaming). It would seem that when QOS is enabled and the appropriate ports are set which a high priority, the speed of my connection drops to a crawl. When I disable QOS, I'm flying again. I have confirmed ports, and protocol types (TCP or UDP) and nothing seems to work.

I just bought a Samsung BD-D5300 Blu-ray player that allows a bunch of networking options including wireless and wired. I was using the wired option when I came across some conflicts with my network using a Linksys WRT350N v1. The Samsung conflicted with the Linksys's DHCP server. The blu-ray player turns off automatically when inactive. It was causing conflicts with my iPad 2, MacBook Pro and Motorola Atrix android phone whenever it got assigned an IP address. When I reset the router and my cable modem, it wasn't assigned an address for awhile, which fixed things, but as soon as it got an address again, it was caused conflicts by being seen as a LAN by my router. When it wasn't receiving an address, it got the automatic private IP address of 169.x.x.x. When I removed the connection with my router, the conflicts disappeared and my computers were able to access my wifi again.

I set up an E1200 about two weeks ago to replace our old DI-524 because our net speeds were getting throttled (the old router wouldn't support anything higher than 10mbps). The same day, we started getting modem resets (We have an SB6120). This never happened on the old router but it's constantly happening with this new one. It'll happen multiple times a day. I called Cox Tech Support and they pushed an upgrade onto the modem but it still reset. I don't think it's the router, since I don't understand why it would force the modem to reset, but this never happened before I installed it. The firmware is updated to the latest version on the Cisco site (1.0.02).

Received this notice from ISP. Does this make sense:We have noticed we are getting a huge number of queries from X.X.X.X and it is showing to be about 98% of the DNS traffic hitting our name servers. It appears that the data consists of reverse lookups to 10.1.0.0 network. It needs to be remediated as soon as possible because it could cause a service interruption. It almost seems as if my router is acting as a DNS server. The isp data consists of reverse lookups to 10.1.0.0 network which would be the internal.

I've had an E4200v1 in use as my home's main router for about 3 mos. And while many others have reported disconnect problems (I think), I myself have never seen any. My router and its N & G wifi networks have been rock solid. Until yesterday that is.Now all of a sudden, most of my family is complaining about wifi disconnects, slow speeds, etc. (My primary PC is hard-wired so I don't see any problems whatsoever... the problem apears to be wifi-only)And the Apple devices (OSX & IOS) seem to have the most severe problems. But Windows devices have also seen problems, just not as critical. Also, it's worth noting that I've been running 1.0.04 the whole time, without any problems... it seemed relatively stable to me. That is until yesterday.
I've bounced the router, I've disabled/re-enabled Wireless G network. I've switched mode from "mixed" to "G-only" back to "mixed". I've changed the channel width back to the default of Auto (I had been using 20Mhz), which increased my throughput (as measured by Qcheck) so I'm leaving it "Auto".

I have an E1550 less than 1 year old. Lately, I have been losing internet on the AT&T modem. I called AT&T but as part of their diagnostics, I have to plug the modem directly into the PC. I have loaded the latest firmware to the E1550.Lose Internet but wireless connectivity to router exists.Internet light on modem is out (modem is connected to router)Unplug modem and leave off plug in, internet light is still out.Unplug router, plug router back in - no internet connection but do have wireless connectivity to router.Take cable from modem to router and plug directly into PC internet light comes on in modem and I have internet from PC.Take cable from PC and plug back into router .I have internet via wireless. What I can't figure out is what could be happening in router that would impact modem internet connection. I have replicated this at least 3 times. Yes, the modem is a bit old, but since plugging it directly into the PC works, I'm thinking it has to be the router and I cannot figure out why unless there's some sort of electrical thing going on in the router.

I work from home on a Lenovo Laptop. I connect to my work network, and ultimately to a midrange ISeries. For the past year I've had no major problems with my Netgear Linksys WRT54G. I switched to a Netgear N300 last weekend because my husband's desktop was having a lot of issues. His connection is much better now.I'm able to connect to the internet with no problem, and I can access my company network & email pretty well. But, when I log on the ISeries it slows to way less than a crawl. According to my netwok icon, the connection is anywhere from 104 to 130 MBPS at any given time. But it freezes up so badly that it takes about 20 - 30 seconds just to type each letter, or to go from one window to another, or just to move the cursor down one line. It's infuriating. Every once in awhile if I disconnect and reconnect it works almost normally for awhile, but eventually slows down almost to a stop again. I actually worked for about 90 minutes the other day with no problem before it started acting up again. When I put the old G router back it works fine again. My laptop has an Intel(R) Centrino(R) Advanced-N 620 wireless adaptor. As long as I don't connect to the iseries, I have good speed and no issues with the internet or work intranet.

When a physical switchport/routed port has high usage, you can move the link to a higher capacity port, upgrade the port, bond links, etc. What exactly do you do when an SVI has high usage? I guess you could remove some servers from the VLAN, but that doesn't seem like a reasonable solution. What dictates the capacity of an SVI? The backplane of the switch?
