Linksys Wireless Router :: Folder Ownership On WRT610N USB Storage Drive?
Mar 10, 2011
I'm trying to share all of my Itunes media (music, movies, apps, etc.) between three PC's. I have created a share of the entire hard drive which I have mapped on all three computers. Basic connectivity seems to be working fine. From each computer, I am able to read and write to the disk. In Itunes however, I created a library including everything I want to share, but Itunes is unable to save the library. When I check security options on the hard drive, I see that it is owned by an unknown user and I am unable to change ownership of the drive. The owner is listed as "Account Unknown S-1-5-21 plus a long string of numbers) I think that if I can take ownership of the drive, I can get iTunes to save the library. how I can change the account ownership of the storage drive? Trying to change ownership properties, I get an access denied message. When the drive is connected to a PC via USB, I am able to change its ownership, but it reverts back to the Account Unknown owner when connected to the router. All three computers are running Windows 7 64bit.

I would like to turn on continuous video recording and have it sent to a drive on the same network as the camera without going through a computer. Is there a way to setup the "storage folder" as a network drive? For example my network drive is accessed at \192.168.0.1volume1 through a web browser.

I am uable to access my files on the USB Storage Device connected to WRT610. Its configured properly. I can see the drive on my network. When I double click it asks for password which I enter and it takes me to the shared folder. But when I click it it says Not Accessible....You donot have the persmission. FTP works fine.I have noticed that on the disk page in the Shared Folder Area when you click on the Summary, the box with Groups With Access is Empty. Whereas on the FTP area in the same summary it clearly mentions the admin group.I have tried every thing including factory reset, hard reset, using new group, new user name etc..The technician from Linsys even spent an hour on my computer and ultimately he gave up and gave me number to contact technical support.

On my network I have a wired PC running Vista Ultimate, a wireless g notebook running XP Pro, a wired PABT box for VOIP, an iPhone, a wireless g Mediagate MG350HD media extender connected to the TV in the lounge (about 10 metres away through 3 wooden walls) and I have a usb hard drive connected to the WRT610N router.I have only switched on the 2.4 band on the router - 5.0 band requires the client to have wireless N anyway, so since I have no wireless N devices it's no use right now?To manage my network I use Network Magic.
Problem #1. My Mediagate MG350HD keeps dropping it's connection to the network. I have tried using DHCP and a static ip for it but it still drops. The only solution I've found is toremove the blanked-out Mediagate from the network map in Network Magic, reboot the router, click 'search for new devices' in Network Magic and MOST times it will redetect and reconnect the Mediagate.
Problem #2. Trying to configure the network storage device (my USB hardrive) is a pain in the arse.In the routers storage tab I cannot make sense of the folder creation. All I want to do is share specific folders and all their contents on the network. Every time I go to assign access rights and click the groups over into the access granted column and hit 'save' it puts them straight back in the access denied column. Does this have something to with permissions on my PC? When I go into Network and Sharing Centre it now displays 'Network Storage', when I click into it 3 networked folders appear, when I try to set permissions on these folders I hit apply and the boxes I've just ticked blank-out again. The folder marked 'Network Hard Drive' (the one I set-up using the storage tab in the router) does not display the subfolders and the actual movies stored on them. When I try to change the persmissions on the using my PC, different folders, eg Movies, TV etc... I get the same blanking out of the tickboxes on 'apply'.Is there a step-by step graphical instruction I can follow other than the PDF that came on the disk with the router.

I have a 1 TB external drive plugged into my WRT610 and want to access the drive from both Mac and PC. I recently upgraded the Mac to Lion and they no longer enable Time Machine to back-up to a network attached drive (Ugh!). I thought a simple work around would be to clone the drive, but the FAT file format does not allow a file size greater than 4 GB. So I seem stuck. Can the router be configured to enable exFat file format for storage? I have the back-up drive in an obsecure location (this is why I want to access the drive over the network) and would hate to relocate the drive to a more visible location.

I just got the WRT610N and I really like it so far, I'm playing with the NAS option and I can't get it to create any new users or groups. I click on the link, fill out the form and click on 'modify user' (The set-up guide has a button there for 'save settings') and nothing gets created. I tried this several times and there are no new groups or users. I checked the storage.info file and there is no additional users or groups there either. I think I can edit that file but I'm not too sure what these last 2 lines mean

What do I have to do to be able to access the USB drive I plugged into my WRT610N from anywhere, on any computer?
Currently, I just plugged it in, went to \WRT610N in windows explorer, and mapped it as a network drive, adding a few files to try out.
So what do I need to do now to access it from any computer that has internet?

I'm trying map the USB hard drive connected to my EA4500 router as a network drive in Windows 7, and it works perfectly until I enable secure folder access on the router.
After enabling secure folder access, and not changing any other settings on the router I first unmount the drive since it was set up without credentials and doesn't work that way any more. When I try to remap the drive I use the same address, but select "Connect using different credentials" When it prompts me for the log in info I try using the router admin account, but it fails to connect. Windows network diagnostics tells me the device refused the connection. I proceeded to set up an account on the router under the folder access settings with the same username, and password I use on my computer, and tried to connect it without checking "Connect using different credentials" (And typing them in manually if that matters) with the same results.
Even with secure folder access enabled I can still reach the drive just fine by typing "ftp://192.168.1.1/" into file explorer. It prompts me for a username and password, I put in the admin credentials, and I'm in. Even the account I created with the same username/password as my computer works this way.
After disabling secure folder access everything works perfectly fine again... I would MUCH rather do this with it though.
Following these directions: [URL] When clicking the browse button the router shows up when secure folder access is disabled, but does not after it is enabled. I've looked through my windows sharing settings, and haven't noticed anything that should cause problems, pretty much everything is enabled. I've also tried turning off my firewall with no success.

I have a WRT610N v2 with current firmware. The hard drive is a Western Digital Elements formatted to NTFS and already has music and photos so that other computers in the house can view them. This setup was done awhile back, maybe even a year ago.
Anyway, I can map the network drive and see everything there, but then after awhile (minutes - maybe 10) of idle time, the network drive can't be accessed by any computer, either as the mapped drive (W or by clicking the WRT610N in the network tree. It's like it goes to sleep and can't be awakened by activity.
I have searched the forums here and at WD but haven't found a solution or even this exact problem. I did find a utility on the WD site that is supposed to fix/eliminate the short idle time, but it didn't seem to work.

Have just had a stab at using my Netgear DGND3700's USB drive sharing - I had a spare external HDD + I want to be able to access files on it both over the 'net and from local network. Both work fine, very easy to set up, however I am unable to edit settings for the shared folder, which means I am unable to password protect it.
I don't need a password for local sharing but obviously it isn't ideal to have files freely available on the Internet, have looked into troubleshooting but can't find any similar stories with Netgears.I click "edit" or "create network folder" and it loads for a second or two but just stays on the same page. There is only one option to select but I have tried clicking the radio button first anyway, then clicking edit, same result.

I am using Win 7 Pro x32. When I use RDP to connect to another computer, I noticed that on the remote computer (sometimes) as well as on my local machine (always), it creates a "Z:" drive. It isn't like a mapped network drive though, it shows under Hard Disk Drives. The free space is the same as the C: drive. When you open it, it is the %TEMP% folder on my machine. Going to the run command and typing %TEMP% will show you the same contents as the Z: drive. When I close the RD Connection, the Z drive goes away. I have no clue what is causing this and I did a little searching and couldn't find anything that resembled anything close to this online. I saw the same thing happen on a Win XP machine earlier as well.

I have a desktop and a laptop. I'm trying to share my external HD from my desktop, to my laptop. What I did was gave the local administrators group full share permissions to the drive, and of course the local administrators group also has full NTFS permission. That being said, I went to my laptop and did a Code:net use X: \mydesktopexternal /user:mydesktopuser PasswordExternal is the share name for the external HD on my desktop. The command worked successfully, however, I am still getting Access Denied when trying to get inside of this mapped drive. How and why does the command map the drive properly, using those credentials, but there's no access when trying to navigate to it? It works if I give Everyone full share permission, but I don't want anyone to just connect to it. Use password protection file sharing is enabled, but of course with "Everyone" given permission, that won't apply (at least to my knowledge).

I recently purchased a NAS enclosure to use my WD IDE hard drive as a networked drive. I configured the hard drive's jumper setting as single (no jumper). I installed the hard drive in the enclosure and connected the Cat 5e cable to the back of the DIR-655 router. When I tried mapping to the drive, I receive the error:
\STORAGE-3B25 is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. Network error (1208).
I suspect perhaps that I might need to change a setting on my router to allow me to access the NAS. The NAS ip address is visible on the router's admin page and I am able to see it when searching for network drives in my laptop. But I just somehow can't connect to it. I am running Windows 7 Professional 32-bit.

I have a Windows 2003 SP2 server with a shared folder. This folder is accessed by 2 people on a regular basis. The problem we are experiencing is when a folder is created by user A, it cannot be moved by user B (and vice versa), as it says the folder is in use.The exact error is: Error Moving File or Folder.Cannot move <filename>: Access is denied.Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use.I have explicitly set full control for both users on the folder. The drive has 70GB of 500GB remaining. I have also used File Server Management to verify the files were not in use when they were being moved. The server is Windows 2003, SP2. Domain environment, with all relevant users having permissions on the folder, and the everyone account removed. Any other operation inside the shared folder works fine.

I have a 1TB Western Digital drive connected to my home EA4500 router. Connecting to media server using SMB protocol (192.168.1.1) works fine. I am moving abroad for an extended amount of time, though, so I would also like to connect to this USB drive using FTP. Using the new Cisco Connect Cloud interface, I have enabled FTP sharing for the USB storage device with port 21 and using standard UTF-8 encoding. Whenever I try to connect to the FTP server using my router login credentials, I get the following error message:"There was a problem connecting to the server xx.xxx.xxx.xx. This file server will not allow any additional users to log on. Try to connect again later"

When I connect my WD My Book Essential 3TB (which is listed as officially compatible with the E4200), I get the following screen:
The E4200 does not detect my hard drive, nor is there a bar saying "detecting".
My problem started when I could not create any new folders through finder. I had to store new files in the root folder. Every time I entered the admin password, I got a message saying I did not have sufficient permission to perform such a task. I then went on to create a new user within the admin group and continued getting the same message. Finally, I formatted the drive directly through my computer and reconnected. And now my HDD is not detected at all.
I have an iMac running OS X Lion. The HDD is question has been formatted to Mac OS extended (journaled).

I have an e4200v2 with latest firmware. I have changed the administrator password from "admin" to a password of my own.I have recently added a USB hard drive to the router, and it says that admin password to access the share drive is the same as the admin password as the router, but it is not. The password to acces the USB drive is "admin" and there is nowhere to change this password to something secure.

I have my WRT350N setup. all computers within my LAN can access my usb storage device. I can not access my usb storage device using a computer outside my LAN.
if you log on to 99.225.89.229:8080 it will ask you for user id and pass word to log into my router.
if you try to log on to 99.225.89.229:21 it wont even connect asking you for a user id and password.
my guess is the router is not allowing port 21 to be accessed, but I'm not sure.

Just bought router and installed. I cannot create share in Storage settings in Advanced settings. I hit Create Share and it brings up the dialog box where I enter the display name. Share entire partition is checked already. I save settings and I see the box going to the form where you assign the Group roles, but then the box disappears and closes. All I see is the original Storage setting page with the Create Share button still there.I tried this on Win 7 using both IE8 and Chrome browsers.
