Linksys Wireless Router :: WRT610Nv2 Setup From Scratch - Recovering Correct User Name?

Jul 26, 2012

I'm trying to access the web setup page and I'm being asked for the user name and password. I have the password from the initial setup written down but apparently didn't also record the (changed) user name. It's not "admin" (tried that - and just leaving it blank - already).

Is there any way to recover the correct user name short of resetting the router and setting it up again from scratch?

Cisco :: RV042G - Reconfigure Router From Scratch?

Today the power was fallen out in our area and the rv042g was turned off. After the power was back I was checking the router because some trafic didn't came through. Then I saw that all the services were messed up and also all the firewall rules were wrong.the lines were still there but it all was setup as [all 0-0].

After trying to restore a backup it gave me the same, even after resetting the router with the reset button for 30 seconds and doing a restore it didn't work.So I had to reconfigure the router from scratch. This services thing gives me a real pain in the *** because in a previous topic I also have mentioned that something is wrong with the services.

Recovering A Lost Wireless Password In Windows 7?

Mar 1, 2013

Recovering the password for a protected network. It can be difficult sometimes to recover a password for a home wireless network or a small to large business. There are several ways to recover such sensitive data and I would trust you to recover in all honesty for the sake and security of the business you work for or even your home network. So how do I recover the key if I don't know the gateway login to my router? the end user will likely default their router to recover the sensitive data but after defaulting they then realize that the SSID key has now been wiped out. The problem now is that all other trusted devices will be disconnected and the set up for the router; well that's just common sense, you would need to set up your static all over again (if applies) and your security as well. Use other devices in your house, trusted devices that have already been able to connect. Windows 7 is the protagonist in this role. Windows 7 enables the use of wireless profiles to be saved for faster connections to be made within the broadcasted range of the SSID. Btw SSID is the network name you see appear in your Wireless Manager. I.e.Bat_Cave; Starbucks; Barnes & Noble Wifi etc.

TIP #!
SSID - service set identification; two categories apply to SSID
SSID - basic service set identification

This applies to ad hoc wireless networks that do not have access points

SSID - extended service set identification

An infrastructure wireless network that has an access point; however this term can be used either SSID or eSSID. You will see eSSID with Point to Point; backhauls, switches, subscriber modules or comtrols; there are tons others but I won't stress other device types. Rarely will you connect to an AP, likely the type of service you receive depends on what you connect to, radio equipment like Canopy, Ubiquiti and Motorola are technologies you will see that are wireless based. What you are seeing is coming from a smaller device within your home or office network. If you use a Verizon air card, it's likely connecting to a nearby AP or a nearby radio which is pointing to an AP.Back to reality now, in order to locate profiles used in Windows 7 we head to the location by two categories of view in the control panel:

Small Icons Start > Control Panel > Network and Sharing > Manage Wireless Networks (This can be found in the left navigation within the vertical blue strip.)

Category Start > Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network and Sharing > Manage Wireless Networks (This can be found in the left navigation within the vertical blue strip.)

What you will see here may be a small list or a large list of every network you have connected to since you purchased the notebook. Now certificate trusted networks will appear here however they may not contain a key. The company I work for requires certificate of authentication and then the use of password linked to Active Directory as long as my computer is on the domain controller. Each wireless profile you see appear here has its own configuration and each configuration is bound to the SSID or network name. It's like the title of a book with its own story. You can have two (2) books with the same name but a different story. When I say different story, I am referring to a different encryption standard; cipher and wireless password. You can see below I have two (2) wireless networks with the same name but notice the different settings.

Bat_Cave
Standard: WPA2 Personal
Cipher: TKIP
Key: -pass51-
Bat_Cave
Standard: WPA Personal
Cipher: AES
Key: #Off5id35!

The reason I am showing you two (2) configurations is because when you are recovering a key for a network, you want to make sure the configuration is the same or else the door will always be locked until you correct your errors. The network name we have is Bat_Cave and we need to recover the key for the SSID that has a Cipher of TKIP.Right click the profile name and click properties. This will allow you to change SSID configuration on the notebook ONLY; in case changes have been made to the router or a buddy changed his encryption standard on his home network. Yeah it's easy enough just to remove the profile and reconnect; but that would be too easy, you wouldn't learn anything.Once you are in the properties of the wireless profile, click the [Security Tab] up top and you will see: encryption standard, cipher and the key; and as a plus, a check box to show you what the key is. Show the hidden contents and copy or write down the key.By using other trusted device on your network or business, you can utilize the resources that you have, to recover a password on your home or business network so long you have the permission from your superior and a good heart for positive intent.

Linksys Wireless Router :: E2500 Not Asking For User Name / Password

Jan 6, 2013

Having just upgraded from a WRT54G to a E2500 all I can say is that I'm disappointed with Cisco.Having spent a few hours yesterday trying to resolve issues via Live Chat (ID 130105-001270 & 130105-002081) and spending more time today - I'm truly at wits end. I consider myself pretty knowledgeable with computers and networking.I'm not sure if anyone from Cisco's Tech staff sees these posts but I don't know where else to "complain" in hopes that the next software/firmware update resolves these problem(s).

The first is my router's setup screens are totally open when using my desktop. The desktop is hardwired to the router and has the Cisco Connect software installed. I open the Cisco software and go to advanced settings. There I'm shown what my router's name is and its password. This is really strange - why would you wish to display this information PRIOR to requesting username and password? However, once there you can go right into the setup screens by clicking OK.I have also entered these screens directly without being prompted for username/password by using 192.168.1.1 or my router.local via Internet Explorer 8 or Google Chrome. At other times I am denied access because IE cannot display page.I'm concerned because I can hide the Cisco Connect software however, anyone that uses my desktop has full access to my router via the web or Cisco Connect.

The second issue is that the password to enter the router and allow access to the internet IS THE SAME! When I had my WRT54G running I had one password (8 alpha characters) to enter setup screens. There was a router generated, 16 alpha/numeric character, password to allow outside devices such as laptops, TVs and game consoles access to the internet. When I set this router up I installed the 16 character password originally used so my laptop and Wii could connect without having to fool around with their settings. Everything was fine until I went into administration and changed the password to my old 8 character one. That is when I found out that the router uses this password setting under administration to control access to the internet AND access to the router settings!

I have uninstalled and reinstalled IE 8. I have ensured that my browser's history and caches are clear which they do when I shut IE down. I'm running Windows XP service pack 3 with the "proper" anti-virus and anti-malware software. My system is up-to-date.I have ensured that the router is running the latest firmware 1.0.05 build 2 and software 1.4.11299.0.I have seen other posts suggesting the removal of Cisco Connect however, I feel that this is a bandaid solution.I'm not professing  to be a router technician however, I "feel" the problem might be the fact that the password issue is the problem. Since the same one is being used for both accessing the router and having the router grant access to the net, my desktop is allowed to access the setup screens without being prompted for username and password.

Linksys Wireless Router :: X2000 Doesn't Need A User Name / Only A Password Required

Nov 27, 2011

Just set-up a new X2000, loaded latest firmware 2.0.01, configured it via the web UI ('Browser based utility' as per the manual). Connected OK to my ADSL broadband by O2.  Configured wireless, everything OK. Funny it doesn't need a user name, only a password, my prevoius WAG160N could be configured for both. Now I want to configure the Parental Controls, BUT apart from my computer name and an Android phone name, all I see in the Target Device ADD button pop-up  are a list of repeated 'Network Device'.   There seems no way to be able to distinguish which is which device (mix of XP & Win 7 PC's and HP Printer through a separate switch), as it does not show IP address or MAC.

I thought I may have better luck with the Cisco Connect software (which I didn't use to set-up the router).  I downloaded the latest version 1.4.11194.0, and ran this on another computer with wireless.   Apart from reconfiguring my static IP address to DHCP, and then connecting through DHCP, the software said it could not configure my router. So it never gets to a point where it installs any program on the computer so that I can configure Parental Controls. How do I get the router to show ALL the computer names in the list rather than 'Network Device' or is there a way to distinguish which 'Network Device' is which computer?

Linksys Wireless Router :: RE1000 Wired PC Prompting User For Login Information For Wireles

Once I unplugged to extender the problem went away. I know what you're thinking: Maybe I just think there's no wireless adapter on these PC's. NO, I looked in device manager and the only network adapter installed is the ethernet adapter. These are all 4+ year old machines with no hardware changes made to them. Wireless adapters are not necessarily standard issue on old towers--even on new towers. Actually I have broken the process of development in 4 stages namely :

1. Capture the packet (using libcap)

2. Break the packet into headers and data (using libpcap)

3. Analyze the headers and data and make a decision

4. ACCEPT or DROP the packet

Its the third step that will depend on the features which are included in the project. I plan to code using the UNIX Socket API.
