I really want to network the two with an RJ45 crossover cable, and all the instructions I've found on our illustrious internet tell me it's easy. HOWEVER, when I've only begun to follow those instructions (one list is from the God Microsoft itself), NONE OF ANY of the sets of instructions matches the steps offered on either one of these notebooks. The options do not correspond. The results do not correspond. The closest I get is a window that says I do not have access to such file sharing. These are MY computers, and have always been, and I am attempting to network using administrator ID logins on BOTH. What's the REAL way to network only two notebooks with an RJ45 crossover cable?

Sharing :: Laptop With Vista Can't Access Shared Folders?

Dec 3, 2012

Suddenly Can't access shared folders but others can . Laptop with Vista. Had many Mapped Network Drive issues about 2 months ago. Finally all resolved. Laptop was gone from our shop for about 2 weeks. Now it cannot see the Shared Folders (except for Public and Printers), and could not re-connect the Mapped Drives. Accesses Internet, can Ping the other PCs(all running Win7). Connect thru Wireless.

Why SUDDENLY, there are no shared folders visible on a Laptop?

Notes: This is the 2nd time this has happened. I changed alot of settings the first time. I re-checked all the settings this time.

Update: Magically works today 12-3-12. But what caused it? Why does Vista loose the ability to map network drives, when nothing

changes...I still want to know why for the next time this happens.

2nd PC is a Desktop Alexs-PC connected via cable to the same router/modem

I can share all the shared folders from the Desktop to the Laptop, but I can only share Media streaming on the Desktop from the Laptop, so I know there is a connection between the two computers. I have now turned off Media streaming to concentrate on just folder sharing.Whenever I try to access the Laptop from the Desktop I get an " Access Denied you do not have permission contact your administrator " box on the desktop.

Sharing :: Prompted To Enter Network Password After Turning Off Sharing?

Aug 9, 2011

Trying to create a network for file sharing, as have upgraded the 'server' (part of a Workgroup, not a Domain) from WinXP to Win7 and experienced problems ever since. Ironically the problems haven't mainly been with sharing files between Win7 and WinXP systems, but between 2 Win7 systems. I bought a new Win7 laptop and tried to connect it to the server, but it hasn't had Read/Write privileges over the files in the Win7 server. Entering a username and password to gain access to the servers folders has not been a problem, and as far as I know, opening files such as documents has not been a problem either. However, when trying to save an edited document, access is denied, and if I try to open an executable file (this is necessary for a node installation), it prompts me for a network password. Every combination possible of username and password from the 2 systems (including '' or 'SYSTEMNAME' before the username) has not worked. I tried syncing the times which was apparently a previous problem, but to no avail. I am unable to access Local Security Policy, as the server is running off Home Premium. I have tried creating a new workgroup, removing and changing passwords, enabling guest access to the network through the Windows Resource Kit Command Shell, creating identical users on both computers, but nothing appears to have worked.

Sharing :: Server Disconnects From Internet Blocking Access To Shared Folders

Aug 19, 2012

I have a small network running in my language academy which is causing me some issues. We have a server running Win XP with two folders, one for the teachers which is password protected and the other for the students which doesn't require a password. Up until two days it has been working well. However now the server keeps disconnecting from the internet quite randomly which stops us from connecting to the shared folders.

I've noticed that a caution icon appears next to the ethernet icon in the task bar when this problems occurs on the server. I have tried to right click and choose the repair option but it tell me that it cannot resolve the ip address. In some cases rebooting the server resolves the issues but in many case it doesn't.

I have one computer (also Win 7 Ult.) that's my primary computer, the other 2 computers are mostly HTPC computers that I have set up to stream from my main computer.I do know how to set up Home groups for sharing files, but I could only set it up that there would be full access to the shares or no access at all. [For simplicity: My primary computer will be PC-1, the 2 HTPC's will be PC-2 and PC-3, and my laptop PC-4.]PC-1 will host all the files I want access to. PC-2 and PC-3 will access my music and videos folders for streaming. PC-4 which is my own personal laptop will have full access to shared folders that I DO NOT want being able to be accessed on PC-2 and PC-3.I have tried many and various types of ways to deny access from PC-2 and PC-3, where PC-4 would be allowed access to on my PC-1, but every time it's either all PC's get access or NO access to the shared folders. I also want to keep all my user accounts as admins.

Cisco Switching/Routing :: Sharing Internet Access Through A 3550 With 2 Vlans?

Apr 27, 2013

They have a locked Cisco Router which is from the ISP and its confed on a fa 0/0 interface to share Internet access on the network. The ip on that interface is 195.198.11.217 255.255.255.252 and i tried it with a PC (set my personal ip to .218 and entered their dns info (195.67.199.27) and it is working. The question is now. My friend found a 3550 laying around and since the ISP wont let them conf their router he wants to use the 3550 to create 2 vlans with internet access and without access to eachother. Vlan 10 for the desktops and Vlan 20 for the wireless (Moving on to some netgear wireless switches) How would you configure the 3550 for this to work?

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 2950 / Vlans And Internet Access Sharing?

Apr 5, 2013

i am trying to set up a cisco 2950 with a vlan to seperate all of the pos machines on the network (4 of them) from all other machnes in the building (3 hard wired and wi-fi).  i was going to use vlan 1 as a trunk to allow internet access to go from fa0/1 to both vlans (vlan 10 and vlan 20).  i have read things about the acl having an explicit deny at the end, so i'm thinking that is my  problem.  i am testing it at my house before deploying it to the network.  i have 1 laptop setup with an ip of 192.168.0.50, and the other is .60.  my router is 192.168.0.1.  i have the ethernet from the router plugged into fa0/1, the 1st laptop on fa0/2 and the other at fa0/3. before i set the vlans up, i checked the communication by just plugging them in and trying to ping, they could both ping each other, the router and 8.8.8.8.  when i finished setting up the test vlans, they could not ping each other(what i wanted) and laptop 1 can ping the router, and 8.8.8.8.  laptop 2 cannot ping anything.
the only thing i did was create vlan 10 and 20, set port fa0/2 to vlan 10 and no sh, fa03 to vlan 20 and no sh, fa0/1 to vlan 1 and no sh.  then i did switchport mode trunk on fa0/1, and switchport native vlan 1.  this seems to be how i was supposed to do it, but it's been a while since i have worked with switches.  i'm sure it's simple, but after searching the internet and poring over my cisco books for 5 hours, it is turning out not to be the case. here are some details:

greenhouse#sh int fa0/1 switchport
Name: Fa0/1
Switchport: Enabled
Administrative Mode: trunk
Operational Mode: trunk
Administrative Trunking Encapsulation: dot1q

Sharing :: Small Business File-Sharing Among Employees

Mar 6, 2012
Basically, we used to use Outlook for our customer management, but after I tried to design a custom form for customers that suited our needs better than Outlook's default form (i.e. we don't need state, country, region, etc. for each customer, and we'd prefer to have spots for Roof, Shingle, Shingle color, etc. in their place), we ended up turning OneNote into our new Customer Management System. Our problem is sharing files, and the security or lack thereof that goes along with it.We used to save all the files to a single computer, and use Windows 7 Home group to access them. That worked okay, but often we couldn't see the file-holding computer, and would have to disconnect/reconnect to the internet.

We recently bought a NAS HD, which actually works a lot better than I expected. Unfortunately, we've learned recently that new employees are not always the most trustworthy. So this is what we are trying to do:We want to set up some type of way for us to save, store, and access files, which allows us to keep track of who has done what (access, save, copy, delete, print, etc.), preferably one where we can set up alerts if certain things happen (i.e. someone copies and pastes the entire thing, or attempts to delete). We've run into the problem where, yes, we want people to be able to copy and paste certain documents, yes we want people to be able to print, but no we don't want someone to be able to print out our entire customer lists, current project lists, etc. This NAS HD (MyBook Live 2TB by Western Digital) could quite possibly have the most ridiculous set up I've ever encountered. I can set up accounts and passwords, but they are completely irrelevant because from "Computer" you can just select the z:/ drive and it will still take you to our files. We just brought on a couple new people, and its like, everyone tells them to come to me in regards to the computers, and I can't even hook them up to the internet because it would give them access to our network, which in turn gives them access to our z:/ drive, which contains every file our company has.
