I am currently using Time Warner Cable as my internet provider and I have been experiencing very slow internet connection speeds for the past few weeks. This has happened across multiple laptops and desktops both wireless and wired connections. I have done a ping and tracert test but am unable to read the results.

I also know that if i wanted to learn where a certain IP address was located, i could easily use one of many websites to find out. What I want to know is what each number of ones IP address means. Lets take a random ip - 72.28.456.98 (seriously, random numbers i just thought of) What do each number mean anyway? How is the computer located with each set of numbers? And is there a table or anything somewhere that shows what numbers belong with what geographical location?

Question re: DIR-655; Hardware ver A4; Firmware version 1.32NA
During bandwidth tests to several sites (principally speedtest.net) I get ping times of 10-11 ms, download speeds of 12+ to 17+ mbps but failure on upload tests using my DIR-655.
When I bypass the 655 and test directly with my cable modem, all (including upload) tests work reliably and consistently.
I have swapped the two ethernet cables involved as well as replacing both with new cables but the results are the same (uploads fail with 655 and work without it)
I have seen several postings over the the last year with this same problem but have never seen any comment from D-Link, or a solution from any reader.
Not that it should have any bearing, but I have TA785GE-128M motherboard and am running Windows 7 (patch current) on COMCAST
is this problem acknowledged by D-Link and is there a solution?

we (educational institution)are attempting to trace an ip address for a STC USB stick. Actually, we have requested STC GSM provider to trace it. Reason being is, one or more of our teachers have sent an email harassing other staff. We wish to find out if STC has the techincal know how to get this info.

I am hoping to have my internal data NOT sent via the router.I'm trying to figure out if data from the Windows PC to the Ubuntu PC goes via the N750 AND the router or just the N750.It should be noted that the N750 is set up as an access point with DHCP/NAT disabled. I have read that switches (and I assume this "access point") can store the MAC Addresses of computers to cut out the router, but I'm not sure how to make sure that that's happening.

I can't tracert or ping certain websites or servers for games. Before I go on, no I wasn't doing this because of DDoS-ing. I was doing this so that I could find an exact latency number for a gaming server. Now, to continue. What I mean is if I try to ping this server, the session will timeout no matter what the millisecond limit is (using CMD)
Ping: Pinging (IP Host Name) [IP] with 32 bytes of data
Request Timed Out
Request Timed Out
Request Timed Out
Request Timed Out
[code].....
Why does this happen? I am pretty sure this is a security tactic used to stop DDoS-ing, but why does it not matter how long I allow the tracert or ping to run? I really want to understand this so I can understand how people don't get traced as well as don't get DDoS-ed. I didn't put any of the IP's just to keep it anonymous. If you really need the host IP, I will supply it, but I will not supply the tracert IP's.

I'm working as a network engineer for a service provider, and we had just gone through a pretty large scale upgrade throughout our network and service. But not long after the upgrade (or maybe ever since the upgrade, we can't confirm this because we probably missed it out due to many other links to be tested), we met a peculiar problem.Everything seems to be running fine most of the time, but there has been some weird 'ghost-like' activity which have been causing inconsistent network disruptions. At times, certain portions of the network can't communicate with other subnets. And most obviously is the problem with a continuous ping and a traceroute simultaneously. Ping is usually normal, but until a traceroute is attempted, it times out at the same time as tracert fails to obtain the route.Besides, performing a ping from the 2nd closest hop address, 10.250.253.251, which is a cisco layer 3 switch also has problems, the results shown are as belowType escape sequence to abort[CODE]

I'm trying to trace a host and I'm getting stuck at the port channel mac addresses. I need to find out where the server is connected to and the switch it lives on.
Please read below:
Step 1) Log into the core (MSFC): Code...
How do I find out where this physical server lives? I keep getting the mac for the trunk ports which is being used for all VLANs.
The server is hanging off some switch but I need to track it down to the last end.

I've been having problems downloading full ISO's before they're interrupted. There doesn't seem to be any real rhyme or reason to it. Sometimes a 4.1GB ISO will stop at 2GB, other times at 4.0GB. I realize I could run a ping from the time I walk in until the time I leave, but that seems a bit too archaic of a solution.nfortunately, our CTO believes SNMP is too much of a security risk

My Dell Inspiron Win 7 equipped computer cannot connect to the Internet. I have a DSL router that I can wirelessly connect to, but it says no Internet access. I used the manual Intel Wireless Manual Diagnostic Tools to test my system and failed the ping test. Dialog box says "no response, default gateway,DHCP server" and indicates the ping test failed.I have checked my router and it is working nominally; other laptops in my family have Internet access just fine. My Intel Centrino Wireless N 1030 adapter is working fine. I detect no other hardware problems on my laptop.

I did a network test with Passmarks Performancetest. I'm running a 10/100 network with all devices connecting at 100Mb. On Performancetest there are 2 tests to run for Network speed, TCP and UDP. The TCP speed test came back with an average 62000kbps (7.5Mb), and the UDP was 89000kbps (10.8Mb). As I'm running a 100mb network, shouldn't the results of been higher?

I travel a lot and use wifi in a lot of different places (hotels, airports, etc.)My apps don't always work and I suspect that in some instances the broadband provider is blocking some of the ports I need.I don't need a port scanner like NMAP since that scans a target IP for listening ports. What I need is a way to figure out whether some firewall between my PC and the Internet is blocking specific UDP or TCP port ranges.

I've recently purchased a new modem and router made by net gear I've been able to connect to the internet via laptop, cell phone, etc. but my real problem is that my Xbox will not connect through the net work test when I physically do it myself but if my Xbox is off and I reset the modem /router and then turn on the Xbox it connects me but doesn't allow me to play any games or talk to friends, so back to my first problem I test the internet using the Xbox, it connects to the network but not to internet and trows an error reset modem/router 30sec. ICMP error or MTU error I've browsed online for solutions but none are successful I've changed router settings bought an Ethernet cord bought a second more powerful router from net gear nothing is working, any ideas?

I am used to lan testing with QCheck and Passmark's Performance Test (Network Test). But recently I upgraded to a 10 GbE switch (Netgear M7100), and it broke QCheck; basically, QCheck gave me an infinity as the result of my throughput test. Passmark performed fine, but it's just a hassle to use (or at least it's not as straight forward as QCheck).
Is there another free tool for network lan speed tests? Or is there a really cheap tool for it?Let's say I have less than 20 devices to test on.I've already tried Totusoft's lan speed test and find that its free version is useless.I'm having an itch write my own software now, but if it comes to that, I'd rather pay for a cheap software.Spent too much money on upgrading already - switches, servers, and computers)

I have my 2Wire AT&T U-Verse router properly set up to forward the port 25565 from my machine. (Incidentally, PortForward.com gives me a blank page when I try to look up how to do this.) However, when I test the port is indeed open ( Open Port Check Tool - Test Port Forwarding on Your Router ), it returns as closed. Yes, I'm running the server software while I run the test. I only have the Windows Firewall, but I ran attempts while the firewall was completely disabled as well as with just the appropriate programs allowed.
