Cisco Infrastructure :: Can 1841 Router Boot From System Image From USB Disk
Jan 12, 2013
I have a cisco1841 router with 32M CF card installed. Now , i want boot a system image larger 32M from usbdisk.First i insert the 128M usb flash disk to the 1841 router and format it, then i can see the device from dir command.Second copy the larger ios image from tftp to the usb disk and successed,i can see the image with " dir usbflash0:" command.Third i use this command "boot system " ,but there is no selection of "usbflash0: " Does the cisco 1841 router boot the system image from usb disk when reboot the router.
i recently bought a new Supervisor Engine 720 WS-SUP720-3B and 48-port 10/100/1000 RJ45 EtherModule WS-X6148A-GE-45AF. Once i fired it all up i got this error %C6KPWR-SP-4-UNSUPPORTED: unsupported module in slot 2, power not allowed: Unknown Card Type. the System image file is "bootdisk:s72033-ipservicesk9_wan-mz.122-18.SXE6a.bin".
I have a 6509 up and running the same mods and working fine BUT the System image file is sup-bootdisk:s72033-ipservicesk9-mz.122-18.SXF7.bin. Is the boot image what is causing my isses?
128 compact flash got corrupted and suddenly not working after i reboot the 2801 router. now i have a new 256 compact flash and 512 compact flash but i cannot still to boot the 2801 properly. it always do looping like booting in rommon and will be the image decompress but in the end theres an error, Wrong system software for this hardware. ive tried different ios but still the same.

I have a 5010 that simply won't load any system image. Loads the kickstart image just fine, but once at the Switch(boot)# prompt just give me garbage when I enter "load bootflash:n5000-uk9.5.1.3.N2.1b.bin Restarting system.

I'm trying to get a spare Sup. V engine module operational in a 4507E and get the above message when it try to boots. I am not aware if this spare had been used in production before. [code]
I had originally set up my E1200 Jan 2012 & had Cisco Connect setup. I didn't use it much but back in Oct after being away for 10 days I didn't have internet connection. Had to re-set both cable modem--then I at least had connection via ethernet, but still no wifi connection. Had to turn off for awhile to get it Router to properly reset & work. & then I think I had to do another reset maybe in Dec, can't remember exactly.
As I mention in another post, I have been having frequent intermittent not connected to internet messages for a long time. Usually if I just turn wifi off & then turn it back on it finds my network (although frequently I notice that it was on my guest network rather than main). I still don't know if it is cable modem, router or my ISP, altho they came out & checked & said signals ok, but modem could be going (Its old but about to move so don't want to buy new modem now).
I updated to Mountain Lion about 2-3 weeks ago. After a Panic last night I was advised to make sure everything updated including router firmware. When I opened Cisco Connect it said I had an unsupported Operating System. Trying to figure this all out, I finally found links to download Cisco Connect that are supposed to be compatible w Mountain Lion (at least the original link said that, but not where I went w the links so hoping it is right link for that). Anyway I downloaded it & was reading a bit & then clicket on the setup icon.
That said it was damaged & to eject it. I downloaded it via wifi just like I download other software. Maybe it is hyper sensitive so I need to take it over to plug directly into my cable modem? But then that will mess up the router, although I guess it will need to be reset any way.So I think i need to get Cisco Connect updated so it works w Mountain Lion. Mountain Lion told me about 1 software that wasn't compatible but didn't pick up on Cisco Connect. So don't know if I need to do a hard wired download, unlike the way I download other things, or what to get an undamaged copy. I then hope that it will see the old version, even though it isn't didn't work & hopefully pick up all my settings & all.
& then I guess I still need to check for a firmware update. & I understand that a firmware update should be done w a good connection (although the user manual just says good signal, web says hard wired ethernet. & because of the intermittent issues I plan to to it manually by 1st downloading & then installing from the download so there won't be a risk of interruption during install--if its even needed.
I've got a 2621XM that has not been used for a while.Completely stripped of any modules and configuration files, the router will continually cycle the startup process without actually booting from the IOS.
The cycle displays the following :
System Bootstrap, Version 12.2(8r) [cmong 8r], RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc1) Copyright (c) 2003 by cisco Systems, Inc.
program load complete, entry point: 0x80008000, size: 0x10034ec
What I've tried:
1) Downloading another IOS image (c2600-is-mz.123-20.bin) via Xmodem and running "confreg 0x2102" from the rommon. All that did is change the last message to "program load complete, entry point: 0x80008000, size: 0x10fa95c"
2) Running the command "boot flash:c2600-is-mz.123-20.bin". If I enable the diagnostics via rommon, the cycle expands to:
System Bootstrap, Version 12.2(8r) [cmong 8r], RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc1) Copyright (c) 2003 by cisco Systems, Inc. program load complete, entry point: 0x80008000, size: 0x10fa95c Testing lower main memory - data equals address Testing lower main memory - checkerboard

If it wasn't for the lack of error messages, I would assume it was a hardware issue. If the image was corrupted, I would expect a message indicating that the image couldn't be read.
I recently obtained a 2851 and have been battling this issue for a week now. An odd set of circumstances happen with the bootstrap startup process. If the router has loss of power or when reloaded; it fails to read the CF card and boots to rommon. I can tftp an image to it (tftpdnld -r) and IOS CAN read the flash card along with any saved configuration. In fact once in IOS, I can wr mem and print the hardware details of the CF card. Once I reload the router it goes to rommon, fails to open the flash, then sits until i tftp the image back. When the router load IOS, it also loads the startup config.I don't think it's a problem with the CF card as IOS can read it. I've tried formatting the card from IOS and from my pc as FAT, FAT16, FAT32, and NTFS - it didn't make a different. I updated the ROMMON to allow for USB booting but haven't purchased a USB Drive yet for testing. The upgrade didn't resolve this issue either. It almost seems like a firmware problem with the EPROM.
I recently formatted the flash drive of an 1800 router and replaced it with an updated image. However, the new features within the new image aren't reflected in the router. I believe that this is because a reboot would be required for the updates in the new image to be reflected in the router i.e. the image needs to be added to the system. How to get the image to the system without a reboot and if by doing so I would get all the new features from the image. For example, the show version below shows the old image in the system as [code]
last month I bought in our China office a 2811c router.I asked (to a Chinese informatic company) a router to create a IPSEC - site to site VPN connection with an ASA.I'm not in China, and when they told me that router was power on, I tried to configure VPN.It was a bomb when I found that the image installed was "c2800nmc-spservicesk9-mz.150-1.M7.bin" not enough for my VPN, we need for example "c2800nmc-advipservicesk9-mz.150-1.M7.bin".Is it possible that in China this image is forbidden for VPN political restriction? - If I can, what's the Cisco procedure to change ios image? I must to buy an advanced license or I only register and download which image I need?
Getting message, cannot open "flash:" on 1841 evdo router, how do I reinstall flash? I am currently consoled into the router, the prompt is coming up as rommon 1>
One of the 6500 was going in bootrom mode, so I have formated the flash disk using the other Cisco 6500 switch and copied IOS file to the boot disk. But the 6500 booting failed.
I recently received these routers and after the first reboot I changed the user id and password so it does not lock out...After configuring my routers for installation, upon bootup I am getting this message scroll down my screen
I have Cisco 2600 series Router which has only 32 MB flash memory. I tried to load IOS image in that but image size is 29 Mb in compressed form. The minimum i found is 5 MB in compressed form but it is missing so many commands. that in 32 MB flash, how can I load image which has almost all the commands.
How do I upgrade the boot rom version on the 7200 router? I am running IOS Version 12.4(22)T and when I plug in the serial ds3 card in my router it keeps rebooting with a watch dog error ( see below). Also, what version should I upgrade to?

We deploy 881G routers at our store locations and are planning to upgrade the IOS to 15.2.2. One concern we have is if the router fails to boot to the new image. Is there a way to configure a second boot image as a failover in case the primary boot image does not load? Our current DR plan is to have a laptop on site that we can connect to remotely and setup a console session to manually change the boot file. This can be cumbersome and time consuming, so I'm wondering if the 881 has the ability to have another file loaded if the boot fails.
Whenever I want to turn off the ip cache flow and enter command "no ip flow egress" on a router interface, the router will self reboot and returned with the error message - System returned to ROM by bus error at PC message in the show version ouput.
I tried on two different routers below here and both also undergoing a cold restart when I key in the command "no ip flow egress" on the said interface
1) Cisco 7206 running IOS 12.4(1c)
interface GigabitEthernet0/1 ip address 10.20.10.2 255.255.255.0 ip flow egress duplex auto speed auto end
when I key in "no ip flow egress" under int gi0/1 and the router self restarted and return the message Router uptime is 3 minutes System returned to ROM by bus error at PC 0x606D48FC,address 0x0
2) Cisco 3845 running IOS 12.4(3e)
interface GigabitEthernet0/0 ip address 10.20.20.2 255.255.255.0 ip nbar protocol-discovery ip flow egress duplex auto speed auto end
when I key in "no ip flow egress" under int gi0/0 and the router self restarted and return the message
Router uptime is 3 minutes System returned to ROM by bus error at PC 0x6007EBE0, address 0x0
I have an ASA 5505 that I was updating from frimware 8.04 to 8.41. Anyway, I went through the update procedure half-asleep and accidentally deleted the boot image right after I installed it (I used the CLI and put in the command del asa8*.bin then just hit enter a bunch of times, which of course means I deleted the old firmware too).
So now whenever I power up the ASA, I get the "Could not find boot file" error. Is there a guide somewhere that tells me how can upload another boot image to the ASA and set the ASA to boot it from teh ROMMON prompt?
I have a Cisco 7204 vxr router that does not have a valid image on the boot flash or on the pcmcia card (disk 2). I tried everything i could to try and get the router to recognize the flash but it keeps giving me a magic card error. I'm losing my mind slowly but surely.
The router boots into Rommon every time and the Rommon options for this router are horrible. No tftpdnld option. Can I get this router to boot from tftp, from Rommon?
I have a cisco 6503 - e series switch which runs c6sup22-psv-mz.121-26.E4.bin. Both superviser engine and MSFC2 card run the same IOS image i guess. In my boot flash their is another image c6msfc2-jsv-mz.121-4.E1. o what is the difference between these images c6msfc2-jsv-mz.121-4.E1 and c6msfc-boot-mz.121-4.E1.
I just pulled the AP out of the box and haven't received support contracts yet. I connected the AP to the LAN and added it to my 4402 controller (version 5.2.178.0) with no problems. Once I set it the mode to H-REAP and it rebooted, it went loopy. Actually, it boots up, shows a bunch of debug info, then reboots. The console output is below. I've tried reimaging (image c1140-rcvk9w8-tar.124-21a.JA2.tar) but still have the same problem. I checked and although the controller software is old, the AP is supported.

I'm having difficult getting this switch to boot from flash. I do not understand why it is trying to load "b1" from "bs1" instead of something from flash. [code]
after upgrading IOS image to V15 on four 2960S switches: Should I make the boot loader image to match the IOS version?I never thought about this while upgrading IOS image unless there is boot issue. I googled for answer but no luck there...
I checked download section on Cisco.com for C2960S-48FPS-L switch and there is simply no boot loader image..The running boot loader is C2960S-HBOOT-M Version 12.2(55r)SEThe running IOS is: 15.0 (2) SE2.
We have Cisco 4503-E switch and software version is cat4500e-universal.SPA.03.01.01.SG.150-1.xo1.bin. Now i have uploaded cat4500e-universal.SPA.03.02.01.SG.150-2.SG1.bin IOS-XE software in the switch and want to boot the switch from this image.
I am planning to upgrade BootLoader image of 7206VXR router due to booting issue. The router is not booting .But if I go to rommon and give boot it will boot.So I am upgarding my Boot Loader image. Now the Bootloader image and IOS image are exactly same. Can I upgarde the Bootloader image to latest version without upgarding IOS?
