Cisco Switching/Routing :: 6500 Not Booting Neither From Boot Disk
Jul 23, 2012
One of the 6500 was going in bootrom mode, so I have formated the flash disk using the other Cisco 6500 switch and copied IOS file to the boot disk. But the 6500 booting failed.

I have a 6500 that keeps booting into Rommon, even though it has a valid image file on the sup-bootdisk, and the config register is 0x2102. When it reloads I see this on the screen: [code] It seems like the repeating error is "error - on read during ELF program load". I can boot the system off of a CF card, but I'd like to use the sup-bootdisk.

One of my customer had a problem with A/C and the room temperature reached almost 50 C. We came to the site and saved the configuration, took a backup and shutdown the switch.
After the A/C problem is resolved, we tried to power-on the switch .. and we found that it is going to the rommon.
I put "boot" command to boot from the bootdisk, but I am getting the following error:
Code...
I tried to search it, But it is resulting in that most probably it is a hardware failure on the SUP.

i recently bought a new Supervisor Engine 720 WS-SUP720-3B and 48-port 10/100/1000 RJ45 EtherModule WS-X6148A-GE-45AF. Once i fired it all up i got this error %C6KPWR-SP-4-UNSUPPORTED: unsupported module in slot 2, power not allowed: Unknown Card Type. the System image file is "bootdisk:s72033-ipservicesk9_wan-mz.122-18.SXE6a.bin".
I have a 6509 up and running the same mods and working fine BUT the System image file is sup-bootdisk:s72033-ipservicesk9-mz.122-18.SXF7.bin. Is the boot image what is causing my isses?

Yesterday a coleagu accdently removed the CF card from the router now the router does no longer want to boot completely. It extracts the image from the CF card but when it has to initialize the configuration it stucks there for hours. Can it be that the startup config is somehow corrupted?
When i try to tftpdnld is says that the mac address is illegal.

Yesterday I've faced a Problem that is not letting me boot with the new IOS.
Actually I'm planning upgrade IOS which supports SSH. As part of plan I've downloaded the new IOS image and uploaded via TFTP server to the switch.
After uploading to the switch. I've verified image and MD5 hash also. Everthing is fine. Then after I set the boot variable for the newly uploaded Image.
When I'm rebooting the Device it is not taking the new IOS. It's booting with the OLD image. Even It's not showing any error message while rebooting (ACTIVITY FILE ATTACHED FOR YOUR REFERENCE) I can't take risk by deleting the old IOS.

I'm having an issue with 2 of my 3560s which are not booting. The last thing I did on both switches before it hangs was:
>write erase
>reload
restarted as normal
[Code]....
I've tried powering-off the switch and pressing the Mode button and power on. I got to swtch: mode switch:reset
It restarted past the POST but just hang halfway at the same bootp-up process as shown on the attached. The SYST LED is Green color when it hangs.

I bought a CISCO SG200-18 switch. I added the Switch to my LAN and started the Switch (as described in the manual). The Switch starts the booting procedure (green blinking status LED) After a while, the LED starts to blink orange and green, instead of steady green.
In generally the Switch seems to work. I can access my whole network, but not the web interface of the switch itself. I also can't see the switch in the ADSL / DHCP rooter.
I also tried to boot the switch only connected to the PC. But ping on 192.198.1.254 is not working. The switch is in the same subnet like my other LAN components.
Subnetzmaske . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Standardgateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1
I exchanged the switch. But the new switch shows the same behavior.

I have a brand new 3650x switch that I was configuring via console and left it on overnight; this was friday night ( I forgot to keep the air conditioner on). When I returned Sunday afternoon and checked the switch I realized that the SYS and STAT lights on the front were not on, however the Leds on the PS module were still on. I powered it down and turn it on again but still there are no lights on the front. The PS OK and AC OK leds on the PS module are on but I noticed the leds on the two fan modules are not green or even amber; they are off. When I first turned on the switch I remembered distinctly that there were loud noice and if all fans were in overdrive mode for a few seconds then the went to normal. I'm not gettgin this loud noise phenomenom.

today I received a Cisco 1841 Router with a problem i have never seen before. Maybe this my 1st really, really broken Cisco Router. When I power the Router on, the fan and all lights turn on (green) and that's it. Nothing changes, also after minutes of wating. On console i don't get any messages and I already tried every BAUD rate possible. Switched the router off/on again and again. And no, it's obviously not a console problem of my computer, because i tried with different routers.

As long as I have been doing this stuff, I have never had a clear understanding of all of the 6500 boot images and statements. The more I read online, the more I get confused.
1. What is the boot image "boot-mz" for? Where should it be placed (i.e. bootflash)? what command do I need to issue in order to use the boot image I want?
2. What is the IOS rommon image for? I thought the rommon image was the boot image but apparently these are two different images. Where should it be placed (i.e. bootflash, sup-bootflash, etc). What command do I use to ensure that I am using this IOS rommon image?

The network gods recently updated our 6500 and upon reboot, the FWSM booted to CF:1 maintence partition, which caused an immediate outage. On the router, I ran the following command to set the default FWSM boot partition to the configuration with:Router#boot device module 4 cf:5 However, it appears the "show boot device" command has been replaced with "show bootvar" which doesn't show me which partition the router will boot the FWSM to. Is there a command I can run from the Router that will actually confirm the boot partition for the FWSM if the router reloads.

What would happen if I installed a 32MB (MEM870-32F=) flash upgrade card in to a Cisco 871 router that already had 28MB flash on-board already? Would the router boot seeing 52MB (the max this router can have) or would it fail completely since the combined total would be over 52MB?
I know you can get a 24MB upgrade card but they are quite expensive.
