Today I purchased a Motorola SURFboard extreme Cable Modem DOCSIS 3.0 in order to replace my old modem which is out of date and has been very slow as of late. I connected the coaxial cable, Ethernet cable(to Linksys wireless router), and power expecting it to simply work. All four lights came on green (power, downstream, upstream, connectivity). The downstream light turned blue which indicates a bonded connection. The device light was blinking on the modem. I connected to my wireless router, but no internet access. I then tried connecting my laptop to the modem directly via Ethernet cable, still no access. I think that rules out the router being the problem. I also ruled out my laptop being the problem as the same thing is occurring with my other laptop and desktop. I called my ISP (Cox Cable) and had them re-establish connection with my modem, this did nothing. I thought for sure this meant I had purchased a faulty modem; I hooked up my old modem and the results were the same, the modem connected fully with no problem (all four lights were green) but I have no internet access.

My neighbor is using my Belkin Router the basic one and has comcast. We both use his internet and have had no problems until the past 3 days. He just got the home phone service from comcast and the phone line is setup through the modem. Ever since comcast came to his apartment and set this up the home phone service to his modem the router is connected but there is no internet access. What is going on and how can I fix this. He has an HP with windows Vista and I have a Toshiba Satellite L675 that has Windows 7 Home premium edition on it.

Our small business just moved into a new building and I am in charge of setting up the network infrastructure. I am not new to computers or networking but I have never had to deal with this set up before.
Our current set up.We have a cable modem from comcast that has the Coax cable connected to it.The modem has 4 ports on it. The ports are connected to a built in 24 port switch that was already in the building. The switch has it's ports connected to outlets in the walls. Currently we have 4 computers on our network and since the cable modem had 4 ports it worked fine.
What we need? We will have another person join our office so I will need to activate one additional port on the switch that already exists. However, since all 4 ports on the modem are already taken, I have no way to add an additional port. They also want us to get wifi in the building. How I think I have to solve the problem (most likely wrong).I have to get another switch (like 8 port) and connect the cable modem to the switch using a cross over cable (if there is no designated internet port). Since I have the modem connected to the switch, I will have to move the 3 remaining connections to the switch.
Then I connect the 4 remaining ports on the switch to the existing 24-port switch that is already there. I will use one of the outlets in the building to connect an AP for Wi-Fi for better signal. Currently the modem and switches are hidden in a closet away from the office space and would mess up the signal.

I called comcast and they say reset them. But why should I have to constantly reset.... Sometimes I just ignore it and it comes back up later... what is going on??

We have kids in the house and I'd like to limit their internet access to certain times of the day but because of the great amount of devices they use (phones, tablets, laptops, etc.) the only way I could think of doing that easily was to set up two wireless networks: one that the adults could use 24/7 and the other that the kids could access during certain set hours.
Here's the equipment I'm working with:
DLink DIR 615 wireless router
DLink DIR 515 wireless router
Motorola Surfboard cable modem S85101U
I plugged the DLink 615 in, set it up for DHCP client and plugged it into the cable modem. I lef the default 192.168.0.1 IP address for the device. On that router, I also reserved the 192.168.0.199 IP address and assigned it to the DLink 515.I also gave the DLink 515 device the IP 192.168.1.1 so I could administer it.I set the DLink 515 to static IP and made the IP 192.168.0.199 and the default gateway 192.168.0.1.I plugged the DLink 515 into one of the LAN ports in the DLink 615.I set a schedule on the DLink 615 to shut down internet access to the DLink 515 at a certain hour and turn it back on at another time.Everything seems to work ok, but at least once a day we have to unplug and plug the routers to reset them.

I've got a ASUS AC66 router plugged into my Comcast cable modem (regular dumb modem), it's running the Merlin (OEM-modified) firmware.I've got a Netgear 3400 router flashed with DD-WRT (latest build), it's a replacement for another N router that died on me.
Anyways, I went to set client bridge like always. Main router is 192.168.1.1 so I set DD-WRT router as 192.168.1.2, set the wireless modes to client bridge with matching SSIDs for my 2.4/5GHz radios, input the correct security keys on the security page (AES), then I put the router in router mode (from gateway) Basically, I followed the instructions on DD-WRT's website, which worked perfectly until the other router died.
This time around as soon as the DD-WRT router reboots with its bridge information saved it immediately causes some sort of conflict on my network and kills the internet and all network connections. All devices lose their IP address. It's like the DD-WRT router is somehow shutting down the network and my default router.

I have a need to have 2 seperate networks from my comcast cable modem.I was hoping to plug a 5 port hub into the cable modem and then plug both the wrt610n and the wrt54g into the hub. Seem that only one of the routers will get an ip assigned from Comcast. Is there a way to have one ISP cable modem and create two different home networks with the two linksys routers, thus two separate independent networks?
-Network 1: public household use and family (Jane's wireless laptop, household PC's etc).
-Network 2: private household/company use and separate from the public family network (company wireless laptop/company PC, un-secure media server).

A friend recently re-installed windows XP on their HP Laptop. They were connected wirelessly with a Linsys router (model wrt54g.1) and an RCA Cable Modem. The Cable ISP can ping the modem and gave me the IP address over the phone. I cannot ping the modem even when I take the router out of the loop. The network card (i1394) in the Laptop is functioning normally and I can see traffic on the modem (both the Cable Internet light and the PC activity light are flashing green) the ethernet port on the laptop is also flashing (amber). However I cannot reach the internet and cannot even ping the modem. The modem is brand new..

I have another ASA that I would like to use, I have an idea that I could set that one up as a VPN unit, but not sure how I could do that. If that is not an option, can you provide the command line instructions on how to setup the VPN via the console cable. [code]

I can access the internet by Ethernet in the family room just fine. What I want to do is use a WRT31N as a switch in my family room so I can connect Mulitple Ethernet devices to the network. I'm having a hard time doing this. How to set up the linksys router? The airport extreme ip address is 10.0.1.1. I tried setting the linksys to 10.0.1.2 and turning off dhcp, but didn't work.

We have a standard surfboard modem and a standard wired router. I recently purchased a wifi-only tablet thinking I could connect to an ad-hoc hotspot. This however isn't the case and now I can't use my tablet at home.I'm going to buy an inexpensive wifi router and just have that dedicated for my tablet. I've read that you can connect a wifi router into a wired router, but it requires a lot of mucking about with the settings. Then I remembered the USB connections that modems and routers have.can you have one wired router connected to the modem via a standard cable and also have a wifi router connected to the same modem via a USB cable?

I have a Netgear 600 dual band router connected to a DOCIS 3.0 cable modem with a 25mps internet connection from my ISP, should be fast right? When I run a speed test on my comp I get 10-13 mbps download on average. Here's the issue, upon visiting my mothers house and running the same speed test I got very similar results. She is running a Lynksys G router on a DOCIS 2.0 cable modem with 12mps connection. My question is, how can this be so, am I at the limits of my comps g network card? as a disclaimer I would like to note I am connected to the G band on both routers.

I'm planning to set up a network with two routers and one cable connection. One router will be for public wifi at my business and the other will be for my Point of sale system and private use. I think I have it figured out but want to double check the set up. Someone tell me if this isn't correct or if there's a better way of doing it.Cable modem --> connect via ethernet to Router #1 WAN port. Router #1 Lan port 1: connect via ethernet to router #2 WAN. Now, router 1 and 2 will have two different subnets; 192.168.1.x and 192.168.2.x respectively. Router #2 is the one that I should use for my private network and for the POS system since it can't be accessed by users from router #1 correct? I have DD-WRT installed on both routers but I plan on putting Tomato firmware for router #1 to limit bandwidth for public wifi and keep DD-WRT installed for router #2.

My network currently consists of one cable modem, and one linksys router.i was given a Belkin N router as a gift, and instead of returning it for a different brand ive decided to keep it. i would like to essentially use a splitter or switch in between my current router and modem. This is the plan. Keep modem and linksys router in the den, use a splitter or switch to split the signal from the modem to each router. Use a 50+ foot ethernet cord running from the splitter or switch through the attic and into another room.

I have a Linksys e2000 wireless router, my laptop connects fine, but as i keep hovering my mouse over the wireless icon in my system tray, it keeps changing Mbps from 130 at its highest going down into double digit Mbps, then back up to 130. Why wouldn't it stay connected at 130 all the time?Someone said to try lowering the beacon interval, fragmentation threshold, RTS threshold, and mtu size, but will doing that decrease the speed of my connection to the router?

I cannot get my computer to recognize my Netgear WNR1000. I have called Netgear to explain the issue and was on the phone with them for 45 minutes. They did get the laptop to work but my desktop still does not. They told me it was a browser error. If I disconnect the ethernet cable from the router to my computer everything works perfect.I tried to reinstall the CD that came with the router and as I try to get through step 2 it says no router detected.I think this is my hold up but I have no way to know how to fix this. I tried to go on the Netgear website and they tell me that I have to be able to connect to the internet to download through the router. Well I can't do that because obviously that is the hangup. If I click on my Network Connections. It shows my computer connected to a Network with limited capability and then a big red X going to the internet.

Just got home from the Comcast store with a $7 rented modem just to last me until I do research and purchase one. I realize that this modem has only one Ethernet port with no WiFi support so I have another PC and a laptop sitting idle because there's no internet access. Did a quick search using Comcast's authorized modem's list and all of them only have a single Ethernet port and no WiFi. Is there a modem with multiple Ethernet ports with built in WiFi? I am getting almost 20mbps with a download speed of 4mb/s which is a HUGE improvement over my ATT DSL service that I've had since forever at 3mbps with a download speed of 300kb/s. I have no idea what technical specifications to look for in a cable modem to get 100% of full potential speed from my service without disconnects or other various problems.
I have a ATT U-Verse router sitting here right now, I am wondering if I can somehow connect it to my Comcast modem. I tried to connect the ATT router into Comcast modem via Ethernet cable, but I couldn't get past the "Your DSL service is unavailable" in the browser, but in my desktop system tray, it shows I am connected to the internet. If I could use this router, I would rather spend money on a modem instead of getting a combo.

Life was great with my DIR-615 and Motorola Surf Board SB-5100 cable modem, but my D-Link refuses to recognize the Internet signal from the Thomson. The Comcast guy spent an hour trying to get it to work, but I'm stuck watching MLB.tv on a 24" monitor in a stiff office chair in my study, instead of on a 47" LCD in my living room. How can I force the DIR-615 to accept the Thomson ACG905? If you advise me to check settings or manually change them, please do not "assume" that I know how to access those settings.

Looks exactly like the one in this user manual:Page 5 of 8, Wiring Diagram.URL,However, there is NO Sam D8 switch below installed in the wiring closet.
