Cisco :: Same Subnet Error - Configuring Hosts To Router Ports
Jul 30, 2011
If all you have is a high end cisco router available, can you plug in hosts to the router ports, and configure them within the same subnet? (When I try to configure ports within the same subnet, I receive a "same subnet" error.

In Cisco RV110W I configured 2 VLANs, one 192.168.1.xxx(Green Net) and the second 192.168.2.xxx with only one fixed address 192.168.2.100(Server), which is configured in the DMZ Zone. I enabled in Cisco "inter-VLAN-Routing", that is described "routing between the seperate VLANs on the Cisco RV110W" I can Ping the server in one direktion, in the other I got an error. That is all expected and ok! All other expected abilities work well !Now I want to see the server from green net . (firewall in the server is off)I configured Networking/Router with exact the Hint values and got an error : "destination LAN IP cannot be the same as the router IP subnet"

I'm stuck at asa 5505 nat, port forwarding configuration Here is what i need:
host1: 192.168.1.1 service tcp/100 >>>>> public ip 1.1.1.1 service tcp/100
host2: 192.168.1.2 service tcp/200 >>>>> public ip 1.1.1.1 service tcp/200
host3: 192.168.1.3 service tcp/300 >>>>> public ip 1.1.1.1 service tcp/300
So people from remote just need to use 1.1.1.1 public ip to access all the ports on three different inside server.I can do this on my old ASA 5505 with 8.0(4). Looks like there're lots of change from 8.0 to 8.4.

I have currently Ciso4404 WLC installed which is in vlan4001 with the 172.16.10.0/24 subnet
I have bought Cisco 5508 WLC recently as AP count is increased... Can I install it in same vlan and subnet? If yes what would be the setting for APs to join... If no how can I configure it with other vlan and subnet..

I have a RV042 with two ADSL services on it, that is a nice simple thing for this unit. The problem that I am having though is that one of the ADSL services also has a /29 attached to it.
How do you go about configuring this additional sub net? On a previous unit I have had to create IP aliases, and could then port forward and NAT without too many issues, but it doesn't appear that the RV unit seems to work the same way.

I have a Linksys WAG120N Wireless-N ADSL2+ Modem Router. The firmware version is V1.00.12.I run a Windows machine attached to the router which has a certain sub network address. On that same machine I run a Virtual Machine with Linux which has its own address, 192.168.1.102. I've been noticing that whenever I shut down either machine and then turn them back on later, they acquire another address, which makes it annoying for me to make them communicate between each other (by, for example, trying to load a webpage hosted on the VM from the physical machine) without knowing the actual address, which, as I said earlier, seems to change every time.
I'd like to know if there's a way (with my router model) to configure it so that the sub network address of both machines remains the same, no matter whether or not they've been shut down and restarted.

Following instructions on How to add a 2nd router to network. This error will not let me complete and save the definition. Changed 2nd router IP address to 192.168.1.2 static, disabled DHCP, added 1st router IP as default gateway, set subnet mask to same as 1st router. Problem occurs in next frame called 'Network Setup' it is requiring a 'router IP' & subnet mask again and will not accept either the 1st or 2nd router IP address - gives the "IP equals subnet please correct" error or "LAN & WAN IP addresses are identical.

Have our public IP address space masked on /24 at our Internet Router. The router portion of 3845 connects to Internet, while the internal switch connects to my internal network and seeds it with the public address space. The switch had a port configured no switchport (L3) with an ip address with /24 (ie 67.63.145.1 /24) this connects to internal IPS/IDS then to Firewall which NATs to internal, then packet shaper, web filter etc etc etc. I need to test my ISP speed so I need to "break in" to the link between the switch and the IPS/IDS. I figured I could configure another port on the switch on the 3845 but my problem is the port to my network is routed and is masked on entire /24. I tried to configure a port on VLAN 1 and give myself an available address in the L3 address space and this did not work (figured it would not but gave it a try)
Any way to get two ports configured to use the same subnet while one is a L3 routed port and the other is just part of that layer 3 routed network?

I have the BEFSR81 V2 and every day at least one of the ports become inactive and the router has to be unplugged and plugged back in to reset the ports. I was going to upgrade the firmware from version 2.44.2 to the one on the site 2.45.10 but when it is downloading I get a message at the end upgrade file pattern error. There is a problem with the router that the ports go out or will the firmware update hopefully correct that issue and how to I get the firmware to update

Is there anyway to configure a 5508 via the SFP ports? Or do you have to use the service port for autoinstall or NCS auto provisioning? It looks like it grabs a DHCP address but it doesn't seem to like telnet, ssh ,HTTP or HTTPS.

Ihave a 3560 w/multicast support and I'm trying to configure a simple environment. I have 2 ports configured, one for the multicast server and the other for the client. Each are on their own subnet, so I have an ip route between the two. My run config on both ports is:
ip multicast-routing distributed
interface fastethernet 0/3 & 0/4
ip pim version 2
ip pim sparse-dense-mode
I'm using vlc server /client configured to use 224.0.0.1 on my isolated network. I can see the mulitcast traffic going into the port, and I the client is sending reports, but I think the 3560 is dropping the packets, since I don't see them coming in the client port. Need to configure a simple multicast environment using 2 ports on a Cisco 3560.

Can you configure a Cisco 1941 to use an 8 port EHWic module and the 2 onboard GE ports in a single LAN?
I've discovered you can't have the on GE ports associated with a VLan, and I'm when I've previously researched for a solution, bridging was mentioned but I cannot seem to get it to work (or completely understand it)The reason I would like to use all 10 ports on for the LAN is becuase I have 10 devices I need to connect to the 1941?

Model : TL-WDR3600
Hardware Version : V1
Firmware Version : 3.13.26 Build 130129 Rel.59449n
ISP : Virgin Media Limited
when I forward ports I get the following error message:
Things to note:I have the web GUI running on 8080, because I run a file-server on port 80.
I am using a Virgin media branded router in 'modem mode', this would not cause issues.
I did not do anything to change anything, I went to add an additional port to forward and it didn't work.
I am on a Dynamic IP
After it stopped forwarding, I upgraded firmware to: 3.13.26 Build 130129 Rel.59449n.

I have a PC upstairs, let's call it (Peter-PC), my dad has a PC downstairs (Kris-PC) and I just setup a linux home server downstairs as well called (server). Now, Peter-PC is connected through Linksys powerline adapters to the router, and server and Kris-PC are connected directly to the router as well.Peter-PC stays constantly connected to the internet, only until Kris-PC is turned on, then Peter-PC connection goes mental and begins to disconnect, reconnect, can't ping the router. As soon as Kris-PC is turned off,Peter-PC is back to normal. However, if Kris-PC and server are both on, they both operate fine. Seems like Peter-PC is the only unfortunate one.I mean the powerline adapters have been working for over 3 years now, and the Powerline light is flashing meaning they are communicating, I highly doubt it's the adapters.

What I am trying to do is I have one switch with say a 10.1.9.1 sub-net I need to have one of the ports to be trucked with two vlans one for DSL and the other for a local connection with the sub-net of 10.1.5.1 both of the sub-nets are configured in the core as 9 and 5 so I have port 0 set up as a trunk and it is set up as ge-0/0/0.0 vlan_5, vlan_192 on the 10.1.9.1 subnet switch. The DSL is working but the local is not pulling a 10.1.5.1 IP and has no connectivity. Everything looks as if it is configured correctly but still the DSl is working but not the Local connection.

I have a BEFSR41 (wired) router. On the LAN side, I'm using all static IPs, and have the local DHCP server turned off. On the WAN side, I'm using DHCP. When I plug my laptop (which runs Windows 7, and has a static IP set up) into the router, sometimes I can't connect to any hosts on the WAN side, even though other machines on the LAN side can connect to hosts outside. If I run Wireshark, I see the following happening over and over. [code] When this occurs, the laptop can nevertheless connect to the embedded web server running on the router, and, there, I can tell the router to release and renew its WAN-side DHCP lease.

I purchased this router a few days after its release, and I was very impressed with its functions. I came from a DD-WRT flashed router with all the bells and whistles, and the E4200 lacked some features but I felt it was a fare trade off for the GHz & dual band. All was well with all my settings (quite a few to name QOS,forwarded, etc)I also updated the firmware when it came available and re entered same settings.
Approx 3 months after use I had 0 WAN connection via eth0 or WIFI, when I logged into router I was pulling a Public IP from my ISP. I could ping from inside the router but no connection on any hosts, very strange. Powercycling Modem/Router yielded same results.. I then backed up my vast amount of settings, and did a 30/30/30 reset.. With no configs I had no issue browsing on any host on my network. So I restored from backup and the issue was back again..So I did another 30/30/30 reset. Then went and reentered the exact same settings as before and the issue was gone.

I'm using a 3020 to bridge 3/4G to the ethernet port on my computer. Things work fine until I also join wireless hosts (like an iPhone or iPad). The routing of traffic to both the ethernet and wireless hosts seems to cause the 3/4G router to lose the signal and disconnect all hosts. I'm using a Verizon LG USB wifi device that is on the compatible list of 3/4G devices. I'm using the latest version of the firmware on the 3020 (I believe the date is Sep 2012).

I am just setting up a simple scenario with a 1841. Server @ 172.31.1.1 cannot ping 172.31.0.254 or 172.31.0.105. It can ping 172.31.1.250. The router can, on the other hand, ping devices on both networks. This is just for testing routing theory so I don't know why hosts on either side of the network cannot ping each other.
I am only using the FastEthernet interfaces on Router 1841.

The ultimate setup thread mentioned only connecting routers together, and it would be cheaper (would it?) to get a new router and a switch instead of two routers of the same type.I admit I don't know much about networking. I tried Googling, but kept getting results about people asking what the difference between a switch and a router is, or how to set up two subnets on one router or switch. My current router is pretty old, its a V2 WRT54GS. I don't want to let it go but the lack of WiFi-n and Gigabit can get limiting, especially when sending large files across systems on a network or streaming video. However, I have another issue that wouldn't really be resolved by replacing it anyway, the fact that most if not all home routers have 4 Ethernet ports max. The amount of wired devices I use in the same area is increasing, and while I can switch some of them to wireless to make room for the wired-only ones, I would prefer not to. Some of these are multimedia or gaming devices and I would prefer the lower latency as well as higher LAN network speeds of Ethernet for them. I was told that I can connect a switch to my router and have everything act as if its on the same subnet. Will devices plugged directly into the router and those on the switch act as if they are on the same subnet and see each other without issue? Wouldn't this cut down on the speed of the devices if I have several plugged into the switch since they are sharing the single port the switch is plugged into the router with? Would it be better to get a switch with several gigabit ports and just plug everything into that for LAN speed? Its not like the WAN connection will come anywhere even close to 100Mbit, much less Gigabit, but would that still cause a bottleneck if several devices are trying to access the WAN over a switch that is plugged into a single port on the router, or no? Or would it be better to plug as many devices as I can into the router and the rest into the switch?
P.S. I use static IPs because I like to know which device has what IP to communicate with them directly if need be, and the WRT54GS has no way for my to reserve an IP based on port, MAC, or anything. Would that cause a problem? Is there any way to assign/reserve IPs on the newer routers (especially Linksys) with their stock firmware so I can switch to DHCP for guest devices?
