Servers :: Expand A NAS Drive To One With More Bays?
Jul 25, 2012
I have a US Robotics 8700 NAS (4 bay). I have it running Raid 5. I'd like to buy a bigger shell with more bays to expand the drives. Can I do this easily? Is it hot swappable? If I put the 4 bays in say an 8 drive array, can I add additional drives and will the existing drives work in a different NAS

I work as a System Administrator for a small company. Can i share a CD drive to all the computers in my domain. Or does this require any additional software to do all this. Because i tried to do it normally by sharing that CD drive and by which it was also available in my network. But when i was trying to access that it says "The drive is not ready". We use Windows operating system in our network. I even tried to google this but i could not find any exact answer for this till now.

We have 4 computers that all run new versions of Windows 7. Each have been connected to a Mapped Network Drive and they all connect fine to the network. Dragging files throughout windows works fine. When we try to attach a file from the network in the browser (as in a GMail message) or upload a file with FTP it disconnects us from the network and from the Internet. This only happens with 2 of the 4 computer.

I cannot edit or save file on a network drive. When saving or editing it says it cannot save and gives a read only error. I have tried to create a new folder and place files within but I still get the same error over and over again. When I check out the read only tab it comes back again.

I'm running a windows lan that connects 3 computers and a shared storage external hard drive. The whole network, including the external hard drive is connected by ethernet back to my adsl modem/router. I want to convert the external hard drive into an ftp server to enable secure file sharing on the internet by allowing remote access (for the purpose of downloading files) to anyone that I offer a username and password to.The external hard drive is a Western Digital World Edition (blue light)I believe it's a 2008 model. The adsl modem/router is a Billion Bipac 7300(G) RA.Is this doable?

I'm currently in college, and do most things with my laptop, and I have wifi just about everywhere. It has a generous 500 GB of storage, but I'd like to store non-essential files on, an external hard drive. However, lugging around 3 TB of storage isn't exactly feasible, and with my experience with my current 1.5 TB portable drive, me running around everywhere with it bouncing in my bag is just going to abuse it until it stops functioning (which it has...)[URL]

I'm currently using my Acer Aspire x1700 desktop computer running Windows 8. It's connected to my router via Ethernet and gets about 25mb/sec. The problem is, my router can only broadcast the signal to my two front rooms and all of the rooms of the level it's on (Living Room, Sun Room, & Kitchen). All of my devices get full signal in these rooms. The holidays are coming up, so people are going to start bringing cellphones, tablets, gaming devices, etc into my house. My room is about 24 ft away from it (My 2nd floor is 8.5 ft above the 1st). In my room, my laptop, a Dell Inspriron running Windows 7, got about 13mb/sec. But as soon as I walk into the next room, which is about 8 ft away, the signal becomes very spotty on my iPod touch/iPad. My laptop can pick up about 2 bars, and so can my Grandma's HP. If I move another 2 feet into my mom's room my iPod Touch/iPad gets one bar, my laptop still gets two, but it's very slow and spotty. My iPod touch/iPad gets a kind of weak signal in my room.

I have a D-link DIR-655. Which that along side with my modem is located downstairs. The upstairs living room has a crappy signal where loading videos becomes painfully slow. Awhile ago, I just tried to relocate my router upstairs and just drill a hole for a CAT cable to slip through to the modem downstairs from my room(as my room is directly above the router)...3 useless holes later, for whatever reason it is impossible to drill through. What are my other solutions?

I have a netgear CVG834G main router, were my desktop is plugged on to.I pulled a new cable trough the house and garage to have internet access on the other side (cable length is about 80 meters). After the 80meters of cable I placed a Linksys WRT54GS v5.1 router. The problem is that I can connect to the Linksys, but the Linksys cant connect to the netgear. On the Linksys the internet LED is blinking very slowly (what does this mean?). So first I thought that the cable was broken or too long. I tested the cable => not broken. I connected the Linksys with the netgear trough a shorter cable and then connected my laptop via the long cable (80meter) and this works perfectly. Is the maximum distends a netgear can take less than 80 meters? (thought is was 100meter ).

Currently We have an RV016 setup and Setup>Network we have the following settings:
Host Name: pagegateway
Domain Name: mycompany.com
Device IP address: 10.20.181.1
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
DHCP Server is not enabled on the RV016. We currently have a Windows 2003 Server that is acting as Exchange Server, Active Diretory, and DHCP Server. My issue is that we are running out of IP addresses and I have about 20 or so left to assign. Given the above setting can I make changes to my RV016 to give me more than 256 addresses? If yes what do I need to do and do I need to make any changes on Windows Server?

When users from Lan accessing the internet, it goes out to our GW1 but I want the RETURN internet packets will go first to Expand 2 for compression then goes to Expand1 for decompression. see attached network diagram setup. All Expand appliances are already configured. What configuration should be in GW1 and R2, both C2851?

I have a Dlink Wireless N Xtreme DIR-655 I have run out of port 4 on it to a switch with a cat 5 patch cable that is 25 ft long It is connected to the Internet port on a Dlink 4 port switch. When i run from that on any of the 4 ports back to my computer ( Win7). I get no internet access but if i connect the cable straight from the router there is no problem. I even attempted to use a older dlink router for the switches and no luck there at all. Any reason the internet would not be broadcasting through the switch.

I just installed a Linksys WRT160N router. The signal started of good about 50 to 70 feet from the routers location. Now the signal is registering as low to good, about 54Mbps. I was wondering what options I might have to install a wireless bridge for expansion of the signal. I have configured an encrypted network using WPA2. I am wondering what the technical difficulty would be to install and configure it. I setup the WRT160N myself if that means anything.

I have a wireless network in a 2 storey house. The internet access and 1 WRT54GS router is on the 1st floor (using frequency channel 11). The wireless single doesn't do very well on the second floor unless there is a device with a strong antenna. I recently purchased a WET610N Bridge and I have an extra WRT54GS (using frequency channel 1).
I would like to be able to add wireless to the 2nd floor by attaching the extra router to the bridge which would wirelessly connect to the router with the internet.

I'm using a router WAG320N in my home but now i need to expand my lan with another ports and wireless coverage. In a wired point (connect directly to the router) i need 3 ehternet ports and a repetear of a wireless signal. The optimal solution woulb be a switch gigabit with an integrated acces point, but I understand that there is no such thing...So going to buyng the switch SE2500 and the AP WAP610N... but then I realized the existence of the bridge WES610N!But the information on the linksys italian site is not enough and the relative page does not works... i need to now if this object can take a wired lan replicate it in 3 ports and expand the wireless network of my router.

I just picked up a 24 port Catalyst 2950 to expand my home network and learn a bit more about networking. Having just upgraded the IOS software 'm now trying to get this to work as required on my network but I'm having a few issues.
My intentions are to plug my cable router/modem wan connection which is set up as the dhcp server to fa 0/1, then use fa 0/2 - 24 for the rest of my wired network. So essentially all on the same subnet interfacing with the router 192.168.0.1.
So far I have set up all of the security on the switch, and have all switch ports assigned to vlan1 with no IPs. My laptop connected to fa0/2 however is not assigned an ip address. Looking at a few posts I ahve rightly or wrongly played about with dhcp snooping.
