I'm adding a router to my existing Win XP Home laptop in order to communicate with a new Dell Inspiron Win 7 laptop and want to be able to access the internet from both. My Netgear Router is setup and working and both laptops recognize the net. How do I get the Win 7 unit to access the net and e-mail?
I use Windstream as my ISP but I use AOL for e-mail. Am I trying to do something that cannot be done?

When IP of both systems are not reserved, each computer can see other network computers and devices, five in total.A good thing that both systems get each time same IPs which even got not changed since I upgraded from E1200.When I reserve an IP for each system exactly that they currently have, both systems loose ability to see other network computers. Network shares not affected, I still can remotely access my XP box remotely from my 7 via RDP by computer name. WDTV Live wirelessly connected to the router can get/update its IP address (no connection issues) but same as others cannot see network resources.
Tried different ways, rebooted, finally ended up with device reset pushing the button.The next day I managed to reproduce the issue, but was able to revert by disabling/enabling of DHCP server.Another issue I got with an external HD connected to the router when some files got converted to folders by uTorrent started from that drive.I had to use Unlocker application to be able to delete folders converted. I can just assume that issue because of anonymous access was enabled to the external disk. No problems when same HD connected to PC USB.
I was wondering if it is possible to install a certain operating system on a network HDD. any possible install a virtual machine or use that as a remote desktop to retrieve on a ipad.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have the D-link DIR-825 router with the dual band, it's never caused me problems, but my wireless laptops can't use it anymore, at first they couldn't even see the SSID even though it was broadcasting. I fixed that and now they connect to the internet but no web pages load. The strange thing is my desktop, itouch and ps3 all connect to it fine. I've tried everything I know how but i'm just stuck now.

It seems like a diversion from the typical Routing/Switching side of networking. Not nessacarly from a technical perspective, how about networking? Ie; being exposed to migration/project teams who wanting to 'migrate' more hardware and sites to the care of the NOC, after the design teams have implemented them? There is also a dvr system on the network for cameras.Each switch is daisy chained together. Everything is working correctly except for the fact that the network drops about 5 times a day. Before they called us, they would just unhook one switch and plug it back in and it would work.At first, we took that switch and exchanged it with another switch in a computer lab to see if just the computer lab goes down. If it did, then that switch was bad. That wasn't the case, the whole network still went down.We had already left, but when we go back, our first choice will to see if there is a loop anywhere within the switch that will flood the network. Then, we were going to see if there was a switch that was getting a lot of traffic on the network to try to track it down.

I sometimes connect my office laptop at home. Though the laptop connects to the network but I am unable to transfer or share files to other computers running Windows Vista/7. After a bit of research I figured this is because the workgroup name of my office laptop is different than the systems at home. I dont want to change the workgroup name of my office laptop as it will create problems at work.
How can I connected my office laptop to the network and transfer files if the workgroup name is different? It does show names of computers on network but when I try to connect a username & password box pops up.

So i was going to install it on a rack in my server cabinet. does the server need to have a wan port and a lan port? Or how does the server get connected? So, so far its the cable modem into the clear os firewall and then into my switch. Is is possible to use the clear os server as the dhcp server for the whole house? From the switch I am going to connect the rest of my servers, and the rest of the house. I was going to connect two wireless routers for my house. Would that work with the clear os server?

One of these machines, the 'host', I want acting as the 'server' which holds all the shares etc.I have a security router which the 3 machines, and a printer are plugged into (via the lan ports). The host machine is also directly plugged in to this.That router hands out IP addresses to these machines using DHCP. The problem is that, I want the internet connection to be shared to these machines through the router, via an active wireless connection on the host computer.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have an AE3000 dual band wireless adapter using the Win 7 Pro OS. At work our routers all use the same SSID, but utilize different channels. In terms of signal strength, the strongest signal is usually, but not always, one of the channels on the 2.4GHZ band (usually 11). However, in terms of speed of connection and lack of overcrowding, the best signal is invariably one the channels on the 5GHZ band (usually 161). My AE3000 will inevitably connect to the strongest signal (channel 11) even though it only slightly stronger than the signal on channel 161 and furnishes a much slower connection than that obtainable on channel 161. Is there any way I can "force" the AE3000 to connect via channel 161 rather than channel 11?

I have 2 laptops that won't connect to the internet through my wireless router. They will connect through the ethernet cable though. When I click on connect, it says "waiting for network" but then closes itself and says it cannot connect. I also have one laptop that will not connect for several minutes after it "wakes up" from sleep mode or is restarted. It shows (No internet access).
