WRT54GL / How To Setup Repeater
Nov 29, 2011
Trying to setup a repeater down stairs for better wifi signal but am running into a problem. The main router I use for my network is a Linksys WRT54GL. The router I'm trying to hook up as a repeater is a Asus RT-N10+. The issue I'm running into is that they both use the same IP address for the web gui so when I try to configure the Asus it goes straight to my Linksys instead.
I tried to disconnect the Linksys in order to get the Asus going in repeater mode but didn't work. What I'm wanting to do is change the router IP address on the Asus so I can have both of them online at the same time to get the Asus going as a repeater. I tried to change the Asus IP but when I did it asked me something along the lines of whether I wanted to change the DHCP address being it didn't match what I had typed in as the router IP.

I have a newer N Router (Dlink DIR-655) and the wireless signal coming off of it, just isn't strong enough. I was planning on using the WTF54GL to repeat the signal and inturn increase the coverage area. I've installed the latest version of Tomato on there (v1.28) and have gone through setting it up as a wireless client, wireless ethernet bridge (which works for picking up the wireless signal and then plugging something in via ethernet has internet), access point, access point + wds and just wds. None of which I can get to seem to properly repeat the wireless signal with internet connectivity. I have both routers set to G only channel 6, WPA Personal, Is this even possible? Or do I need a router that can run the tomato firmware on the main (host) router that is connected to the net?

I have wrt54gl setup with dd-wrt standard version running hotspotsystem. 3 wrt54g version 5 with dd-wrt micro setup as WDS client of wrt54gl. After the intial setup I can log into the main router wrt54gl (192.168.1.1)and all 3 WDS routers (192.168.1.2 ,3 and 4), but after couple of days of testing suddenly i can not login to 2 of the WDS routers,
I mean I can connect to it and it will get me to internet but I can no longer login, it just says the page take too long to load. I know if I do a hard reset and setup WDS again then it will work, but I dont want to keep doing that. Tried to power cycle the router but still wont work. Is it the load on the router made it inaccessible ?

facing issues with TP-Link TL-WA801ND while setting it up as a Universal repeater. The AP is a Linksys E3200..and I got the TP-Link to broaden my WiFi at home, I was successful in setting it up, however, after a day or two I get prompted to enter a "WPA2 Enterprise" username/password.I DID NOT setup WPA2 Enterprise, mine is WPA2 Personal...it's peculiar that it works for a bit then reverts to Enterprise.

I have a wireless access point/modem at one end of my property (which I cannot relocate). To improve wireless connectivity on the other end of the property I am thinking of placing a wifi repeater (probably a cheap one like http:[URL]... mid-point in the property. However I don't quite understand how these things work. I assume repeaters, extenders, boosters are all the same thing?
Does the repeater actually create a new seperate wifi network, so I will effectively have two wifi networks/SSIDs? or will my wireless devices still see only one wifi network? If it creates two wifi networks what happens when I move through the property with say a laptop, will the laptop need to disconnect from one and reconnect to the other hence interrupting the connection? (which is not ideal).
Also does the repeater take up an IP from my main wireless access point/modem? My setup uses a block of static IPs and hence I would prefer not to waste an IP on the repeater if possible.Homeplugs is something else I'm looking into but that seems to be a more expensive option. With Homeplugs I would disable the wireless on the main access point/modem. Then use the Homeplug to put a wireless access point in the centre of my property hence giving fuller coverage.I've also tried higher DBi antennas (& directional ones) but they have not been effective.

I have a Linksys WRT54GL version 1.1. The firmware is 4.30.11 (European version). In the Basic Wireless Settings I can't change the Wireless Channel. It remains at channel 1, and I simply can't alter it.This is strange, because in earlier firmware versions, I was able to change the channel without any problems at all. I would like to continue to use this firmware version. How can I solve this problem?

I have a Cisco WAP200 Wireless-G Access Point - PoE/Rangebooster with the latest firmware 2.0.2.4-ETSI?I’m trying to set it up as a repeater, repeating the wireless signal from a Cisco 877W.I have configured the WAP200 with the same SSID, WPA key, and channel as the 877W.
I have changed the WAP200’s AP Mode setting to Repeater, and picked up the 877W’s MAC Address. The WAP200 is broadcasting and I can connect to the wireless network, but I don’t get DHCP. It’s almost like it’s still in Access Point mode.

I'm trying to setup a DVR camera system and two web page server boxes behind a Linksys WRT54GL. The problem I have is that all of the devices want to use port 80 to generate the web page. Individually, I can get the boxes to work, but when I try to put it all together everything seems to fall apart. I've got to the DVR set to External port 80, Internal Port 80 IP address 192.168.1.254. The web page server box I try to set to External port 8001, Internal port 80, IP address 192.168.1.200, when I try to save this setting I get the error message Internet IP address and LAN IP address are in the same subnet. If I change the web page server settings to External port 8001, Internal port 8001, IP address 192.168.1.200, it will save the settings, but it won't work that way because it won't actually generate a web page when I try to access that port. The error message doesn't seem to make since as all I'm changing is the port number, not the IP address or subnet mask.

I wanted to amplify signals as the current router is not able to beam signals that far. Hence I wanted to set this up as a WiFi repeater to have a complete coverage. I tried N number of ways but could not succeed.

Does MAC address settings allow the administrator of the router to prevent access of computers and devices to a network at will? Basically, in my household I need to have remote control over wireless devices and allow them to use the network at times and others disable it. In other words, I control when and if a certain device has the ability to use the network or not. I think I found the settings in my router when I log into it, but I'm not sure how to use them or if it even does what i described above.

I just buy a simple hub and keep my wrt54gl as my router or should I put the money toward a wireless N router (or AP) for the better range and use the wrt54gl as my hub?I currently have my wrt54gl as my one and only router. It gives me good range indoors, but I would prefer to get better range outside, if possible. Right now I get range out about 50 feet around the outside of the house but I would prefer that to double, if not more.At the same time, however, I need to move the router to the basement to better facility my network. Obviously, this will affect the wireless range.I have considered DD-WRT, but not sure it will work much from the basement. So, I have considered two options. One, I could keep my router where it is and just get a simple hub and stick it in the basement.Obviously this is the least expensive option, but it doesn't improve the current router's range, although I could try DD-WRT. The other option is I could use the money I would put toward the hub and, instead, upgrade to a wireless N router or AP and move the wrt54gl to the basement to serve as my hub.

I recently hooked my router up to my cable modem and was disappointing to find my internet connection halved or worse. Here's all the relevant information I could think of.
Cable internet through JCOM (in Japan)
Router: WRT54GL V1.1
Modem: Motorola SURFboard SB6180
I have tried disabling the firewall on the router and adjusting the MTU. Both had zero affect.
Is there a possibility that installing a homebrew firmware like dd-wrt?
