Wireless G And N Network With Same Or Different SSID?

Oct 18, 2012

Wireless Equipment

D-link DIR-655 router set to only N
Old Netgear Router used as access point set to only G (I set up as an access point by turning off DHCP, changing the IP adresss and set to only G.)
Wireless Printer (only G Capable)
Cell Phone (only G Capable)
2 Laptops (both N capable)
iPad (N Capable)
Roku Media Box (N capable)

Problem: If I put the router and access point on the same SSID then equipment that is N capable will connect to the G network. If I use two different SSID's then the printer is unreachable. Is there a way of either (a) having two SSID's but allow the printer to be seen or (b) having one SSID, with separate access points for N and G but not allow N functioning client to connect to the G access point.

Wireless Network Without Broadcasting SSID?

Jul 16, 2011

Several days ago I had to change my router. The new one works OK except that I can't get the PC to link into the wireless while the SSID isn't being broadcast. Having read that it is a good idea not to broadcast the SSID for security reasons, I thought I would try it!

I am running Windows 7 home Premium and the router is a Draytek Vigor 2710 using WPA2. I can see the network when the SSID isn't being broadcast, it just refuses to connect to it. As soon as I switch on the SSID it connects like a dream.

Linksys Wireless Router :: Wrt160n - Original Network SSID Had Been Changed?

Oct 8, 2009

I have a wrt160n router set up at a friends house that i would connect my windows xp laptor to when i would go there.  it always worked fine. i recently got a new laptop with vista 64 bit OS.  i went to my friends today and connected via wireless for the first time.  i expected to get prompted for the security key.  instead it asked for the pin #.  the pin number was something new i noticed when i replaced an older linksys with the new wrt160n so i had it in my notes.  i entered the pin number and connected to the wireless router.  but then my friend laptop could not connect and said it couldnt find the network.  when i viewed the available networks, i noticed that the original network SSID had been changed to my vista laptop's computer name.  i had to physically connect my laptop to the router and reconfigure the settings of the wireless network. then my friend was able to see the available network and automatically connect..

Cisco Wireless :: 5508 Assign Single Ssid To Multiple Interface Groups By Assigning Ssid To Multiple AP Groups

Aug 26, 2012

Is it possible to assign a single ssid to multiple interface groups by assigning the ssid to multiple AP groups?

I have buildings geographically dispersed that are configured with multiple vlans in interface groups so that I can maintain an addressing scheme of dhcp assigned addresses per building.  Each building is also further grouped as AP groups.  I'd like to know if by assigning the same wlan ssid to each of the AP groups, will I maintain addressing integrity for each building?  I'm thinking it will work.

Do the buildings have to be outside AP range of each other to avoid problems?

5508 controller
7.2.110.0  code
6 buildings
6 interface groups

Home Network :: Having A Second Access Point With A Different SSID?

Apr 22, 2011

i live in a two story townhouse. under the stairs, there is a small closet where the modem and router are. there are also three ethernet ports, one that leads to each of the bedrooms. However, the only one that is being used is my room (my roommates dont need ethernet) so what i decided to do was run the ethernet port from the modem directly to my room and then connect the router to it using the ethernet port in my room. (my room is upstairs)

Now, this setup works great for me. I can connect my HD to the Airport and my printer via ethernet and my desktop as well. BUT ever since i moved the router upstairs to my room, the internet has been EXTREMELY slow downstairs

so this is what i was thinking, I want to get another wireless router and put it downstairs where the modem is, and use my airport Extreme as the "second" router. But, i want to use a different SSID for my airport extreme. is this possible?

I was thinking to connect the new router downstairs like normal, and disable the DHCP server on the airport extreme and change the IP address to make sure it isnt the same as the new router, then connect the new router to one of the three ethernet ports on my airport extreme.

Is that the correct way to set it up? and if i do that, would i be able to connect all my devices without a problem? (in addition to the devices mentioned earlier, i also have a second printer, a PS3, a home entertainment system, and sometimes my laptop, all connected to the airport via an ethernet switch) and lastly, will I be able to access the internet without a problem? will this slow down the internet that i get?

the reason i want to do this is because 1) I dont want any of my roommates or their guests to access my hard drive (i know, i can put a password on it. but still) and 2) if my printers are on the same network as their computers, they like to "accidentally" wirelessly print to my printers. I want to avoid that because they print. alot.

HP G70-250US Notebook - How To Change Network Name (SSID) And Password

Mar 30, 2011

I have an established wireless network, using a wired Dell desktop (XP), wireless HP G70-250US notebook (Vista), wireless HP Officejet 650 E709n printer, and Belkin N600 router. To make a long story shorter, both my cable company and Belkin were involved to set up the router a few months ago, and I was assigned an SSID and password that I now want to change. I've received emails from Belkin on changing it at the router - but when it comes to my notebook computer, how to establish a network - I'd like to know how to change the SSID and password in an already-established network, once I've made changes with the router. I'm assuming this is possible? It is my understanding that I don't need to make any changes with my wired desktop, other than to use it when making the router changes? I'm a little familiar with the network configuration setting process with my printer, so am pretty sure I can handle that.

Home Network :: How To Setup Same Wifi Ssid Over Large Area

Jul 2, 2011

I'm trying to setup my wifi at home and want to cover all the areas under same SSID and allow roaming cross since one router can not cover 20000 sq ft over 3-4 levels.I anticipate at least 8 if not more to cover everywhere. How do I setup a WLAN network for myself. I have a cat6 cable running in quite a few rooms.Basically my end game is have uninterrupted wifi access everywhere in the house Possibly run a SIP based PBX over wifi wherever possible, close to 24 extensions.I also laid down cat6 in most rooms to allow to setup my own central media server with that as well but that's a different topic and forum I guess. Can I use the cat6 coming into the rooms, connect it to the wifi router and provide Internet access over wifi and use the router as a hub to connect a cat6 from the router for the media player and another one to a sip based Pbx extension or have the Pbx extension be on wifi?Damn sorry for such a confusing and loaded sentence.

Netgear WNDR3700 Router - Using Wi-Fi Extender / Different Band With Same Network SSID?

Jul 7, 2011

I have basically the following setup: It's a home network, running with a Netgear WNDR3700 wireless router.

Wireless Devices on the Network:
Google Nexus One: 802.11 b/g/n
iPhone (Original): 802.11 b/g
Main Workstation Laptop: 802.11 a/b/g
"Beater/Other" Laptop: 802.11g b/g

Ethernetted devices on the network:
Logitech Revue: CAT-5e

I'm running both the 2.4 GHz and the 5.0 GHz networks over the same SSID. The goal, obviously, is to get everything over to N if possible. I've heard that wireless N has much better signal and transfer rates, is this true? Also, is running the two different frequencies with the same SSID problematic? It's kind of strange, because my Nexus One is having a difficult time staying connected to the network in my office while the main workstation laptop in the same room is getting a much better signal.

[Code]....

What's interesting is that both are running on the 2.4 GHz networks, essentially both not on the wireless n network, which kind of defeats the whole purpose of things. Is it bad to run both the 2.4 and 5.0 GHz networks with the same SSID? If using a network repeater, is it bad to rebroadcast the original network with the same SSID as the source network? It seems that the 5.0 GHz network is getting "clobbered" by the 2.4 GHz network. Is it really necessary for me to broadcast using different SSIDs?
