View 2 RepliesI am having 5 IP addresses assigned to me. I have one commercial/business modem/gateway/router. If I want to have the advantage of separate lines (go with this for now) how else can the gateway do it other than simply passing the IP directly through, no router function, basically a modem/switch, everything else not there.

View 2 Replies View RelatedMy ISP assigns IP's through a standard motorola cable modem via DHCP server. I can pay extra for a persistent IP which uses the MAC of my switch and assigns an IP. Is there a way to get multiple public IP address's from the modem using a switch? For example. Can I plug the modem into the switch and then plug a computer server into the switch and get an IP assigned to that servers MAC address and then also have another server attached to another port on the switch and get a different public IP for that servers MAC address?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI am a Rogers Customer (Canadian isp) whch uses DHCP IP address. My set up is like so: SMCD3GN2 Modem with gateway and wireless mode disabled. (i'm using it as a pure modem) 2 of its 4 ports are active, one is connected to my pc directly and the other is conencted to a d-link router. The router is connected to 4 other pc's + some wireless devices. What I want to do is change my IP address ( the pc with the direct connection ) in windows 7. I can effectively do this by simply shutting the modem off for about 30 seconds. Luckily my isp pretty much continuously assigns me a new IP address every time I do this.
The issue is I don't want to disrupt my entire network ( the router ) With windows XP I used to be able to go into cmd and ipconfig/release, then go to my ipv4 settings and set a custom spam ip address/subnet and then go back to automatic and then ipconfig/renew and voila I would have a new IP address. With windows 7 I have no luck. I have tried spoofing/changing my mac address of my network card/adapter and it results in my modem not assigning me an IP address. Is there any efficient way to change my DHCP IP address in windows 7 without disrupting my entire network?
I came home yesterday to find that I couldnt connect to the internet, I called my isp, and they said i'm receiving a full signal, but my computer just isn't communicating with my modem. The ip address is 0.0.0.0. Of course the isp can't do anything with this problem, and since my computer is past the warranty, neither can microsoft or hp (not for free anyways). The person at Qwest (isp) said I might have to "reset my netcard"
View 3 Replies View Relatedwe were happily getting along with our RCN cable Motorola modem and DLink wireless 655 until the last couple of weeks. The internet would intermittently not be available, without warning. First couple of times we power cycled the modem and router, and it worked, but then stopped being available altogether. I got some support from RCN, the cable provider (they own the modem and it's old, so naturally that was my first thought). I now have a new modem and the situation is exactly the same. The error message that I get is that the IP address for the network cannot be found.
I got internet access by bypassing the router, connecting the modem directly to my (Windows XP) PC, releasing and renewing the IP address, and power cycling the modem. However, the internet still intermittently shuts down, and of course turning off the computer necessitates the whole procedure again. And now we have no wireless. Should we assume it's the router, and a new one would solve our problem? Of do we just need to reset the IP address of the router?

View 1 Replies View RelatedMy ISP gave me a Thomson THG520 modem when I subscribed to their service. It has 2 links and USB and an Ethernet link. It worked fine with our 2 computers but for several weeks or so I experiencing that it only gives me IP address only on one interface that one that's first plugged into the computer.
If I reset the modem and plug in the USB I get an IP address immediately. If I unplug the USB and plug in the Ethernet cable I don't get an IP address. If I reset again the modem and plug in the Ethernet cable I get an IP address but not on the USB link after I unplug the modem.
EDIT: after entering the modem's administration I realized it's firmware was updated (probably my ISP did it.). Also I read about how this stuff works, there is an evidence that my ISP set the CPE limit to 1. (so it seem only one computer connected to the modem can get IP address while the other can't.). And this configuration is stored on the modem somewhere. Is there a way to view it somehow?
My Speedtouch 516v6 modem does'nt provide gateway adress to the TP-Link router. The modem can work in bridged mode or routed mode and I want to use routed mode. TP-Link has PPPoE mode but I would like to use a dynamicIP mode in which the router obtain network parameters from the modem and it does, but it does not obtain a gateway address.

When I wanted to change my IP i just disconnected and reconnected a dial up connection that does the job instantly! So how would I change it without restarting the router? (When i change something in my router interface page (PVC1.2.3....etc) my IP changed instantlybut how do I do this without accessing the router, like commands and a batch file etc? I just found out that my global IP changed on its own after like 30-60 min :S why is that! and to do so manually???

I've done this before for a friend in a different city and it worked fine, and I felt very proud of myself for doing so. However when I try to connect here, the modem won't assign my Xbox an IP address. I've been into ipconfig/all and tried to manually assign the same IP address to the Xbox but to no avail. Same deal with the alternate MAC address option.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm using a 2wire 2701HG-B wireless router/dsl modem combo. My computer is a Win 7 Ultimate 64bit. The router/modem has been reliable for the last 2 years.. hardly ever needing a reset, reboot, or anything. Then all of a sudden my wifi network didn't show up anymore. I did a reboot, nothing. Kind of weird so I got on the phone with AT&T and they walked me through some simple stuff and they determined it's either the router or my computer. Well I know it's not the computer, I can use the mobile hotspot on my android phone and it gets on just fine. All of the lights on the router are green, AT&T showed that all the tests show the internet connection is working. Since the router is not sending out a wifi signal anymore, I had to plug the ethernet cable in. The system recognizes a connection but says it isn't connected because it is a "public" connection. Additionally, if I go to network connections with the cable plugged in, I can see my DirecTV DVR is showing on the network (because it is connected to the router via ethernet too). So it isn't broadcasting wifi, I can see my DVR over the network in windows, but I can't get the IP renewed.
Here is the ipconfig /all print:
Windows IP Configuration

Node Type . . . . . . . . . . . . : Broadcast
IP Routing Enabled. . . . . . . . : No

When I try to do an ipconfig /renew, it says this:Windows IP Configuration An error occurred while renewing interface Local Area Connection : The operation was canceled by the user.An error occurred while releasing interface Loopback Pseudo-Interface 1 : The system cannot find the file specified. The AT&T rep said I may need a new modem and router. It seems weird because it worked fine one night, then the next night all of a sudden it didn't work.
Reset to factory defaults. DHCP turned on. Status page shows black for router IP, gateway, and DNS addresses. Powered router+cable modem on/off multiple times already. I also have another wifi router (WRT120N) and it works fine.
Pretty simple connection. Just a ethernet cable between the cable modem and E1200 internet port (Cable modem <---> E1200)
there could be complications, but it appears the WPM300N is 'bad'?my wife's computer (XP SP3) recently started freezing at random times. Once while surfing she got a BSOD. The last few days it had gotten much worse, sometimes the freeze occuring during the boot process, and again at random points.
What I tried was determing all new s/w installs and deleting them still didn't fix the problem. Next I used some Norton Ghost back-ups restoration from the time period she had the freezes... still was freezing. Next an image from long ago and it still froze. Got me thinking it was h/w related. She has a wireless mouse and keyboard. Put in wired units, still froze.
A few days ago my router died. It couldn't get a WAN IP Address from the ISP's cable modem. ISP verified the modem was working by having me attach directly to it one of my wired computers. This router was a new (2 months old) ASUS RT-N56U. I put back my old LinkSys WRT600N. In doing so I had to change the passphrase. This turned out to be a big assist to me determining what went wrong.
On each of the restores of an image, the system never froze, not until I connected to the router by giving the proper passphrase, but usually after that. When it happened (I did multiple image restores) when I was in Safe Mode with Network as it was connecting, the implication was clear it was the WMP300N.
As luck would have it, I had another card taken out of my old computer. Put that card in and so far, he computer has NOT frozen up. I've restored all the deleted items and Windows Updates and all other Updates (Norton ISS, Flash, Adobe) and it is running fine.
Attempting to get EA6500 working with TWC Motorola Surfboard SBV5220 modem, which has been working just fine for the last 2 years with a Linksys E3000 router. DHCP client in the EA6500 either doesn't ask for an IP address from the cable modem or the modem just isn't supplying one. With the E3000, you could see the IP address assigned by the cable modem and the primary and secondary DNS server addresses provided, and if the DHCP request didn't work, these addresses would be all zeroes. But, with the EA6500, I can't find an equivalent screen that shows these assignments, or zeroes when the DHCP request fails.

View 4 Replies View Relatedi just bought a Netgear WNDR4000 router due to troubles with my current modem/router combo (D-Link DSL2730-B). The router doesnt have in built modem functionality obviously so I need to set up the modem/router as a dedicated modem. Also should I use the current modem/router as the dedicated modem or an older model i own (I think its a DSL 502T)? Because the current one often drops the internet connection. Don't know if its a problem with the modem functionality or something else. Will the older one serve better since i didn't have any problems with that one or will it be outdated? I only upgraded due it not having wireless capabilities. Otherwise it's fine.Or will I be even better off buying a dedicated modem? I really don't want to spend more money but if this is a far better alternative I guess i will.
EDIT: Ok so found out that I have to put the modem/router in bridge mode in order for this to be possible. However, looking up how to do this lead me to a dead end because i need to fill in some fields that i have no idea how to interpret.

When I check the modem, it always is still running. The lights on the modem do the exact same thing whether the internet is working or not. The disconnection is entirely random. Sometimes it will disconnect immediately, sometimes it will take up to a few hours. I do not have a router hooked up to the modem, and the only other thing the modem is hooked up to is our tv. But even when the tv box is off, we still randomly disconnect.
On the previous forum thread that I read, some of the comments asked for the person to paste their entire ipconfig and their entire ping list from command prompt I will post that below: [code] Could it possibly be a virus? I am currently performing a virus scan using Microsoft Security Essentials. I will report the results of that tomorrow, seeing that it will take several (up to 10) hours to finish and it is nearly midnight of me posting this.I should also note that whenever I unplug my Ethernet cord it gives me a symbol that looks like this other than the regular disconnect with the red "X" over the wire symbol.
I'm switching to cable internet service instead of DSL. My Netgear router will not work with my cable modem; but it works like a charm with my DSL modem. Is it a problem with the router setup? Good thing I still have the DSL service.

I have an internal address that I wish to forward from an external address- so if someone goes to 123.456.789.012:3456 then it will forward to 192.168.1.244:92 (All numbers are arbitrary here- only for illustration). I have and Access Rule and NAT and PAT set up so that I can get in if I originate from outside the LAN. What I am trying to do is to have this work from inside the LAN as well- so that if I am at my desk, and I connect a device and type in 123.456.789.012:3456, it will deliver the content at 192.168.1.244:92. The problem I am having is that it just isn't working, and I cannot figure out why- When I started here, there was an address configured to work this way, and it still works- I just cannot find what is different between what I am doing and what the person who configured it did.
