Network Card Auto-negotiation Mystery?
Apr 18, 2012I've a D-Link DFE-520TX PCI Fast Ethernet card, which is/was excellent until this first problem. 2 nights ago there was some good lightning/thunders activity, resulting in burning of ISP network switches. This morning they replaced the switches and brought up the network, but here's the problem:1) Under the default card setting with Auto-negotiation, PC looks for DCHP Server address resolution and ends up with YELLOW triangle in the system tray.2) Whereas, when I CHANGE the card setting to 10Base in FullDuplex, then PC gets connected to the ISP network.ISP support said that either the card could be damaged due to lightning strike or it could be due to damaged cable running from port box to the PC (RJ-45). I'm wondering, could lightning strike damage a Network card in such a partial manner (just one feature, i.e., Auto-negotiation)? But that person warned, there will be deterioration in ISP speeds when I use 10Base in Full Duplex (for now) compared to Auto-negotiation speeds. Speeds really came down badly, that's understood.

Jun 11, 2012We are facing to an annoying issue. We have a 6509 running in Catos 8.3(4) with WS-X6548-GE-TX, WS-X6348-RJ-45 and WS-X6148-RJ-45. When we configure the mode in auto negotiation, it comes up in half duplex. We need to configure the speed mode at 100Mbit/Full to make it work. But if the chassis or port restarts (not the server), the link becomes half duplex. This happens only on module in Gigabyte like WS-X6548-GE-TX.
Cable have been replaced but does not work. It is not happened on another chassis running on IOS 12.2(18)SXF17b with WS-X6548-GE-TX.

Jun 28, 2012Building was recently upgraded from cat3 to cat6 wiring and I'd like to ssh into each Cisco C3750 stack and change every port on the stack to autonegotiate. I can release each port one at a time by doing "no speed" and "no duplex" after selecting each port (interface fastethernet x/x/x) , but it's taking forever as there are many stacks and each stack has a number of 24 and 48 port switches. The stacks are a mix of fastethernet and gigabit ports (C3750 and C3750G switches) if that changes anything command wise.

Apr 3, 2012I was trying to enable AutoQoS on my router 3925 GE interfaces, but failed to do so !! But I was able to do so on FE interfaces !! I have Security/K9 and Data/K9 license on this router. Or do I still miss out anything ?? I am on IOS 150-1(M4).
I was able to enable AutoQoS on all my Cisco 2811 and 1841 routers !

Feb 27, 2011We are trying to take ADSL interface into another VRF i.e (ip vrf forwarding VRF2 under dialer interface), the ip address negotiated command disappears, and although the dialer interface becomes up-up state, the adsl interface does not get an IP address dynamically.
Tried:
1) to reenter ip address negotiated again after changing the vrf of the interface, still the dialer interface shows "no ip address" under configuration
2) ppp ipcp accept-address again does not work.

May 18, 2013I have a question about speed negotiation process between interfaces. I have 3650X Sw and 2960S-48port. All ports of two are GigabitEthernet, however the link between them is only 100Mb/s, Full duplex. I try to set the speed 1000 Mb/s manually in the interface then the interface never up. Its status is down/down. I must set back to speed auto. I show interface Gigabit0/24 in Sw 3650-X and figure out that there are many output drop (over 600000). I clear counter then after two days the output drop is over 70000. This link is trunk link between two switches, all ports of access SW are Gigabit and connect to PC. First, I thinks the 3650X is throttled somewhere in output direction of trunk link. But there is another trunk link (Gi0/23) to another 2960S-48port and no output drop number in this interface. This Giga 0/23 speed is 1000 Mb/s (auto speed, auto duplex)
Does any outside things impact the speed negotiation process between 2 interfaces? And output drop number may caused by abnormal speed between two Gigabit interface?

Jun 9, 2013We have an ASA 5505. 5505 comes with two default vlans 1&2 with each of them marked as inside & outside respectively.My query is , if i do not want to use vlans on 5505 and only want to use the Ethernet ports as pure physical layer 3 ports, is it possible?i.e. i want to assign a layer 3 ip address on eth0/0 and eth0/1 and make them as the inside & outside interfaces rather than vlans. is it possible to do away with vlans in 5505 & will it work otherwise?

In my webdmz I use 2 ACE 4710 proxys in FT mode. I used a layer 2 switch to connect firewall and proxys together.
I would like to eliminate this switch if possible..and connect both 4710's (layer 2) direct to firewall.If I could make gi0/2 - 4 part of the same vlan, then I would be good to go.

Head Office A has an ASR 1002, Head Office B has Cat3550 and the Branch Office has Cat3560. Both Cat3550 and Cat3560 at L3 switches.At the moment if one link fails i have to manually disable or activate ports/interface on either Head Office A or Head Office B devices and ammend the default gateway on Branch Office switch to either Head Office A or B device, which ever is working.I am looking for an automated and reliable solution for this so that i dont have to make any changes on the devices and failover happens automatically.

When I try to configure it on a port that is in a channel group, I get the error "AutoQoS Error: AutoQoS can not be configured on member port(s) of a port-channel". I have also tried configuring it on the channel interface, but it is not an available command under the channel interface. Is there a way to do auto qos on the channel interfaces or their member ports or does it have to be configured manually?

Oct 18, 2011I have a 7604 Edge router that connects to our Data centre via Fiber.
but i keep getting input errors on the interface Gi3/5. i also found out that i cannot change the duplex settings on the edge router to auto, i only have two options of full and half and changing it has not worked either.
I have tried to use a switch in between the fiber modem and the edge router to try to manipulate the duplex settings, but when i tried it the port simply shutdown and then i have to reverse the configuration.
The software version of the router is 12.2(33)SRE3, i really need to sort this out as connection to and from the Data centre is quite slow.

TCP/IP auto obtain IP address does not work (LAN status is 'limited or no connectivity'), entered static ip/dns, then LAN status is 'connected'. However, can't access internet (...DNS lookup failed...). After several calls over 5 hours w/ tech support, now only works using a manual broadband connection when cable physically connects modem and pc. Tried once to add wireless router(reset modem, connect and cold boot all 3 devices...) while the tech supporter was on phone, but broadband connection won't work any more. So the service rep said I had connection and could access internet, the router is not his issue.Is this the new modem problem or the provider server issue. I have had SBC DSL for years before swith to the new provider, everything worked fine. I also tried cable connect to a different laptop, got the same problem. Both PCs can still connect to my neibauer's wireless router no problem.

Feb 19, 2013We have a few voip phones, with the voip server in the building. The hard phones have been trouble, with dropouts and occasional bad quality phone calls. The sip provider is absolutely hopeless. The modem router is a DG834Gv5 with fw V1.6.00.33. There is no option in the router interface to edit QoS settings. How can I improve our voip system? have an iphone connected to a handset or something, could that? We are using an iPECS-50A voip server and iPECS LIP-8012D phones.
My second question is in regards to auto attendants. I need to edit auto attendant settings. I assume this is done using the VOIP server. When the IP address is entered, I get a station program option and Admin & Maintenance. Where would I find auto attendant?
Auto-Configuration IPv4 Does Not Match Up
Feb 29, 2012I live in a shared house, and I am the only one who has been experiencing issues connecting to the internet. I have to ask a housemate to reset the server, as this is the only thing that works.
When I am unable to connect, and I use command ipconfig, the following appears: Autoconfiguration IPv4 169.254.23.29 On the occasions when I am connected, the following appears in its place: IPv4 IP Address: 192.168.0.2
One tip that I came across was to check the box (Wireless Network properties, Connection tab) for "Connect even if the network is not broadcasting". I had hoped this simple solution would assist, but to no avail.
PC Gets Auto-IP From Internet Not From DHCP On Router?
Apr 21, 2011I am trying to sort out an IP problem on my mates PC. I have setup a Linksys wireless router on his home broadband and it works fine with my laptop and gives me a DHCP address. When I try to connect his home PC either with a wireless dongle or ethernet connect it gets a Public IP address through the router and not one of the DHCP addresses. Even if you give it a static IP address and setup the router to accept it when you turn the PC on it still gets this public IP address. It is associating with the wireless router but only gives a local connection. I have done the ipconfig and it just renews the public IP address to a different one
