Cisco Routers :: Quickvpn / Client To Gateway Vpn Rv042 Can Only Ping Router?
Jan 27, 2012
I am setting up remote access using an RV042 router. Using quickvpn or a client-to gateway vpn and shrewsoft client, I can only access/ping the LAN side of the remote router and one machine on the remote network. The PPTP server and native Windows 7 connection provide access to all machines on the remote network.I have 2 possible reasons for this and would like to find the real reason:
1) The remote RV042 is behind another router, and that router restricts access other than the PPTP traffic.
2) The VPN tunnels other than PPTP only allow access to the remote LAN side of the router and remote machines that have the remote router defined as their gateway in the IP configuration.

I have router Linksys RV042 v1.2 with latest firmware Version: 1.3.13.02-tm. And I'm using QuickVPN v 1.4.1.2. I've setup VPN connection with values, below: But every time I'm trying to connect to router by VPN it always popup a window "Remote Gateway not responding".It occurs when I'm trying to connect to VPN behind other router, when I'm connected directly to Internet the connection is established. But I'm connecting to other networks using VPN and it's working properly (behind the same router), so I think it's problem with RV042 configuration but I don't now weher.

I have a RV042 router setup with Client to gateway VPN access, and am connecting with a W7 PC running QuickVPN. We have many PC's that already have the standard CiscoVPN client on them, is it possible to configure the RV042 to allow these clients to conenct? I'm not sure how to get the Mutual authentication to work, or how to import the PEM certificiate into that client. It seems to allow it to import, but I can never select it.

I set up an RV042 as a VPN gateway for a client a year ago. It is running firmware 1.3.12.19-tm (Feb 13 2009 13:03:21). I created a new certificate. When I download the client certificate, It comes as a .zip file. One the can not be opened by a zip utlity (windows, Winzip or 7 zip). It looks like I can just rename the file to a .pem file, but I want to make sure that is right. They were getting QuickVPN timeouts, but that looks like it was fixed in 1.3.13.

I'm trying to set up a RV042 to do the following:
1) Block all WAN connections, except for:
2) Allow all port 80 connections, and forward to 10.4.20.60
3) Allow all port 443 connections, and forward to 10.4.20.60
4) Allow port 22 connections from specific IP addresses, and forward to 10.4.20.60
5) After a remote client has connected using Client to Gateway VPN, allow that remote client to access anything on the LAN
I'm able to do #1-4 above, but I can't get #5 to work. Or I can get #5 to work, but can't implement the restrictions I need in #1-4. Attached are some relevant screenshots. I think the problem is that I have Forwarding rules set up that require me to have a firewall rule to Deny All Traffic from WAN1 (unless I'm specifically allowing it). In the Access Rules screenshot, rule #6 is the problem. If I enable it (thereby denying all WAN1 traffic), then VPN clinents can't access anything on the LAN. However if disable this rule, VPN clinents can access anything on the LAN, but the firewall also opens up all outside connections to SSH, since that's set up in the Forwarding rules. I would have thought that once a remote client is connected using client to gateway VPN, then that client is considered to be on the LAN, as far as the firewall is concerned. Thus a firewall rule (like #6) that is specified for WAN1 shouldn't effect remote VPN clients.

I'm running Cisco QuickVPN on a clients laptop (Windows 7). Windows firewall is disabled because McAfee SaaS is running.I sometimes have the issue that the initial connection attempt comes back with "Gateway not respoding" during the network verification process. You close the program, you open it again and it works. Sometimes it takes 2 or 3 tries. Today I have the issue that my client tried it like 20 times including several reboots and it's just not working. I tried it from my own computer and it connected fine on the 2nd try.I'm thinking that it might be time-out thing, that the VPN client doesn't receive a response fast enough? I know my clients home internet is darn slow.

So have a RV042 VPN router that is directly connected to the ethernet port of our comcast cable modem.
If I connect to it using QuickVPN (1.4.2.1) from a PC that is connected using AT&T 3G Network it works fine!
If I connect to it using QuickVPN (1.4.2.1) from a different PC that is connected using home WiFi (linksys wrtxxx) then it fails. In the VPN log all I see is failure messages for ping.
2011/10/22 15:47:28 [WARNING]Failed to ping remote VPN Router!
If I open a regular command prompt and attempt to ping the VPN router it works so not understanding why the QuickVPN is unable to ping.
how I can troubleshoot this further. Makes me think the RV042 config is fine otherwise it would not work on a 3G connection. Something on the home PC or the home network. Not sure what to check.

I've been working on getting a client to Gateway configuration going for quite some time now. Had it working with a different Cisco single wan router that failed. The user replaced the router with an RV042 and we are trying to get the QuickVPN to once again connect to the router as it did before the replacement. Previously we did connect successfully with Windows 7 clients.
Router: RV042 v3 firmware 4.0.4.02-tm Quickvpn version 1.4.2.1
what i keep getting in the log is the following :

A client of mine has a Cisco RV042 Router. I've configured it to run VPN and it works, sort of. Some clients can connect, others can't, for no discernible reason.
Specific machine issues are Windows 7 x64 or x86, Quick VPN latest release, unobtrusive (Avast or Microsoft Security Essentials) security, etc. 2 separate machines on the same home remote network, 1 can connect just fine, the other can't. My laptop (Win7 x64) connects just fine, one of my techs can connect OK, the IT support guy that works for this client can connect.
Particulars of the router: Firmware version: v4.0.4.02; PID VID : RV042 V03; Firmware MD5 Checksum : 1f84d8d0a2a8b99f9bfa4409e64547aa

I am trying to install a Cisco VPN Router RV120W behind this router. I have setup the Cisco and can access the internet from the device. I also setup the Actiontec router with the DMZ host as the Cisco router. When I try to connect to the VPN tunnel however I connect but receive an "Gateway is not responding" error message after 30sec. Is there anything else I need to setup on the actiontec router to allow VPN passthough or something like that?
Actiontec Lan IP: 192.168.1.1
Cisco Wan IP: 192.168.1.2
Cisco Wan SN: 255.255.255.0
Cisco Wan Gateway: 192.168.1.1
Cisco WAN DNS: 192.168.1.1

I used to have the problem where QuickVPN keeps on trying to verify the network because the RV042 cannot get the final ping to the client.I then bought a RV042 HW version 3 on the VPN side and I installed RV042's at the clients as well. This may look like overkill but believe me, it gives peace of mind, it made things a whole lot better, everybody happy.I am going to set up tunnels but for the time being the clients use QuickVPN. The above setup is all good if people access the vpn from the same source.
I now have a problem where one of our people is in Vietnam and she cannot access the vpn due to the "verifying network" loop.Looking at the log everything looks great, I compared a successful connect with an unsuccessful one and the logs are identical. The only difference is that the final ping is blocked (recorded in the QuickVPN log on the client side). The client uses W7 with firewall on.No need to repeat suggestions, such as turing printer sharing off, I have been through all that. isn't this simply caused by the ISP in Vietnam blocking pings ?

I have two Cisco RV042 Routers, they are being used to connect two offices, i have created a standard gateway to gateway connection, fixed public ip addresses on both sides and everything works fine, except when the tunnel gets disconnected, it does not connect back automatically, i have to log into either router console and click the connect button to get the tunnel working again, this is really annoying since it happens once or twice a day at least.

I have a RV180 router and i am trying to use the Quick VPN Client version 1.4.2.1. It works fine on my Windows 7 pc, and worked successfully once on the windows XP sp3 pc. But now the XP pc will not work.
What looks strange is in the VPN Client Connection Status on the router I see the status is Online, however the XP pc will not ping anything on the network or connect to the RDP pc i want. The QuickVPN Client hangs on "Verifying Network".
I tried the suggestions i saw online:
Disabling Firewall
Enabling Firewall
Making user name shorter
Allowing for PING on WAN (replies all come back fast)
Reboot Router
Upgraded firmware to 1.0.1.9
I did not adjust the MTU rate as i was not sure what to change it too. AV is AVG 2012.

So here is my issue. I have two sites, each with a Linksys RV042 on thier site.
Site 1:
External: 142.142.142.142
Internal: 192.168.25.0/24
Site 2:
External: 143.143.143.143
Internal: 192.168.26.0/24
We have setup a site-to-site VPN between these sites, and all traffic is running back and forth without isse.
At Site 1 we have configured the Client VPN for use with the QuickVPN software. Again, for site 1, this is not an issue. We are able to access all internal resources at Site 1 without issue (expect for some DNS related problems).
The problem that we have is attempting to access Site 2 resources via the QuickVPN connection at Site 1. Even though they are not suppose to exist, we are able to ping 192.168.26.1-6 (which are ghost addresses likely created by the RV042's) but no actual systems on at Site 2.
I have added the Client VPN connection at Site 2, but it has the same problem accessing resources at Site 1.

We have 2 remote locations that are connecting to a server at our home location. Each remote computer uses quickvpn utility to establish a vpn with the home location. Our problem is that sometimes the vpn disconnects while we are working in remote desktop on server 2008. Luckily our sessions in remote desktop stay put but we lose the vpn connection. Most of the time we get a message that the remote gateway is not responding. Our dsl internet connection seems to work and we have previously had no trouble with connecting to the home location. We have 3 computers that connect simultaneously to the server at each remote location and sometimes one computer will stay connected while others disconnect.

We recently upgraded from a Linksys WRT54G router to a Cisco RV042 to gain "gateway-to-gateway" automated VPN access. However, we are unable to get "client to gateway" access working.
With the Linksys WRT54G we used a "username" "password" pair for remote client authenication. This worked for both Windows and Mac OS X users using the built-in PPTP client. We found we had to set "encryption" value to "none" on the client side.
I am confused by the setup screens on the RV042. It looks like I must setup a "tunnel" (VPN->Client to Gateway), there is (VPN->VPN Client Access) where I can enter a username/password, and also (VPN->PPTP Server) where another username/password pair can be entered. I have tried all sorts of combinations but "no love". I am particularly mystified by the (VPN->Client to Gateway) settings for "Remote Client Setup"; the client can be calling in from anywhere and there is an option for "Dynamic IP + Email Address" but I'm not sure how that maps onto the client (do they use the email address as their account name?). I have also looked at defining a "Group VPN" where I am given other options. But nothing works from the client.
I just need to come up with some setup that works, that I can document to both PC and Mac users at a miniumum.

Is there a safe way to use the Cisco VPN Client (V5.x) and Cisco Quick VPN (V1.4.1.2) on the same Windows PC? I need to access my office RVS4000 and my customer's PIX 506 from the same laptop (but not at the same time).
Perhaps I should be asking "Is there a single Windows VPN client that works with both the Cisco RVS4000 and Cisco PIX 506? I have seen these questions asked on various forums but have yet to see a definitive answer.

I have a new WRVS4400N VPN router and have set it up for VPN. On a separate computer I have a Verizon EVDO card so I have used that with a separate computer to access the internet on a public, routable IP address off of my network.
When I use the QuickVPN client, I wasn't able to get into my network (using ddyns.org) because I didn't have the "BLOCK WAN REQUEST" setting disabled so the router could be ping'd. Once I did that, I verified I could successfuly ping my ddyns name abc.xyz.com.
In the error log of the QuickVPN client, I still see:

I HAVE been able to make the connection successfully without any other changes to the environment. It's hit or miss, but usually a miss. Restarting QuickVPN sometimes works on the next try, but then fails if I disconnect and try again. Even when that ping error message is appearing, I am able to ping the host name at a command prompt without a problem.
Is something else on the router possibly blocking the ping requests? My router is behind a Westell F90 6100 DSL modem operating in bridge mode. The 4400 is obtaining the WAN address from Verizon(DSL) and that is also where I have my PPOE info entered to obtain the internet connection.

I've got half a dozen RV042 routers in various locations. They are running v4.0.0.07. Seemingly randomly, I got the 502 Bad GatewayThe CGI was not CGI/1.1 compliant. error when attempting to log into the web interface with google chrome (same with IE too). This happens from the LAN side. I actually didn't notice it until my Opsview monitoring software threw up a critical when it didn't get an http response. The router is otherwise actually working just fine.Since the first occurrence, more of my routers have developed the same error.
I've tried different browsers, clearing caches, though I'm not surprised those efforts were fruitless, as there is clearly a problem even when no browser is involved (nagios). The nagios http check also returns a 502 Bad Gateway.
