Cisco WAN :: Dial Backup To ADSL Service Using 877 / External Analogue Modem
Jan 4, 2011
I'm trying to get a solution together for a dial backup to an ADSL service, using an Analogue modem. The kit list is as follows:
Cisco 877
Multitech MT5656ZDX External Analogue Modem or USR 5630D External Analogue Modem
Rolled patch cable RJ45 to DB25M adapter (pinout from a cisco guide)
So far I am unable to get the router/modem to dial out at all. I know the modems work, I have tested them from Windows.
I have attached a couple of outputs from "show line" and "show line 1" from the router and also what I think are the relevent lines of config although it will be too much config and probably jumbled by now as I've tried quite a few things to try and get this working.
I am more concerned with the config relating to the connection of the analogue modem than the routing element.

configuring my new Cisco 881 Router with my existing ADSL modem. At the moment, i am connecting to the internet using tp-link modem router, all PPPoE/DHCP/Wireless is set up there...and that connect to the switch where all my computer connected to.
Now i want to connect this new Cisco Router to it to basically do the firewall/filtering/dhcp...leave the authentication thing on my Modem. Can i get a head start what to configure here on the cisco? since it does not work as easily as other Router where I can just plug a cable from modem LAN to Router LAN.

The PPPoE connection can be successfully established only if the PC dials up, but not if the router replaces the PC to do so.Both the PC and the router are identically configured for this purpose, i.e. using the same ADSL dial-up account(usr/passwd pair). As a whole, we can exclude any wrong configuration on the router itself.

I've moved a Cisco 887 router from a site where it was used to dial up on an ADSL line to a new site where we have a EFM circuit which terminates at a Cisco 1841 router managed by our ISP. I therefore need to re-configure our 887 router to work as a conduit from our servers back to the Cisco 1841 as its gateway.
I have asked from our ISP and they told me that i need to configure the 887 to use IP address 176.35.140.65 255.255.255.248 and its gateway should be 176.35.140.70. That's great advice in theory but I don't know how to configure this correctly
Our internal network is using subnet 192.168.42.XX which will need to be retained for local devices.

I got two offices about 150KM from each other,i need to backup 10 to 20GB / machine, the data ranges from accounts package to doc files etc.i suggested a vpn, then backup from one side to the other and vice versa as this ensures backups are swapped over and are off site.Would you recommend this, or am i better off using a hosted backup service i pay for / GB?

I have two pcs not connected other than keyboard and monitor. Both have identical USB dial up modems. I PC running Windows XP connects every time, the other running Windows 2000 connects only sometimes. Like this morning it connected on the third attempt and I was able to move a lot of files. When I tried again later I got five attempts and then "no answer".

Each site also have Internet connection using ADSL connected to firewall, we are using pix 501 and ASA 5510.My question is, can i use the existing ADSL line to be use as a backup line if the leased line is down on any of the site??
And i want it to trigger itself, once the leased line is down, the firewall UP the backup line? something like that..

We have a few WAN connecting sites to ISP using BGP. we are looking at getting backup link for 1 site.
We have decide to use an IP WAN ADS L link. we will have 877 and 2800 for each link. from understanding, we have a static routing on IPWAN service. means when both BGP WAN and IP WAN connected to the ISP. ISP will use ADSL as primary ignore the BGP link. so other sites will see a BGP route coming from ISP via the ADSL link for this location.
So we have find a manuel solution, leave ADSL unplugged of power but setup same LAN ip address and connect the cable towards the core switch. when WAN link fail, switch on ADSL. So the static route will advertise to the rest of sites.
just want to know is there any auto solution can disable the ADSL link/ ppp link when the 2800/WAN route is up. and enable the ADSL port when the WAN is down. not sure if HSRP/backup interface/tracking will work? and how?
site office switch - > 2800 - > ISP - > ADSL -> ISP
(need this link to be backup and protocol down, so the ISP will not able to connect to this link and advertise as next hop)

I am not sure whether this is the right category to which I should submit my question, but I couldn't find a section for "other software support" or anything like that.I am running Windows SBS 2003 at one of my clients and we are using Syncback as the backup software to backup important files and folders that gets written to the server on a daily basis. Now we are using two external drives for this purpose, alternating the two every second day, for improved security.However...I have set up the backup profiles exaclty with the same configurations and everything...everything is identical. But the backup to one of my drives does not want to perform giving the error : "the folder on the destination drive does not exist and can't be created"The folder does exist though, and what puzzles me is that running the backup manually or even copying files manually from the same server backup folders to the drive works perfectly, but when running the scheduled backup, it fails...and yes, the logon and authentication is set to "run as administrator" and the username and password is entered correctly.Like I said, the configs of the two drives are exactly the same, and the backup to the other drive works perfectly.I am using the Syncback free version, and support for the free version on the 2Brightsparks website is unavailable

Have installed an 887VA on the end of a ADSL connection. The provider has specified EF 150 on the link. The router is configured using a Virtual Template.
If the Virtual Template has a service policy applied, we don't have connectivity to their main site - although the CD and PPP lights are lit. As soon as the service policy is removed, we have connectivity.
We've had three sites with the same problem. Two of the sites don't have QoS specified on the link but had the same problem if the service policy was applied.
Hardware - CISCO887VA-SEC-K9
Software - 15.1(4)M4

My daughter is on an Army Base in the South Pacific. They have Dial up internet on their home telephone not DSL. They have high speed wireless at the base community center/coffee shop. I will be going there in 9 days to install the dir-615. She has a Dell Desktop with Vista Basic SP1, laptop with XP, IPAD2 and a NOOK Tablet. The dir-615 HVE1 with firmware 5.00na on the bottom sticker. She said she was able to go to web address, login, change the user name and password, started on the wireless configuration and she paniced. My question is basically this. by using a cat5 cable from the desktop to the dir-615 with dialup internet connected can the router be setup using the automatic method as opposed to manual. Our first priority is to be able transfer files to the 2 tablets without being connected to the internet like a switch and secondly If possible go on to the internet from a Tablet or the Laptop. I assume the second option would reuire internet sharing option when setting up the network and performance would be ugly.
Can get I get this router to work this way with just dialup to set it up

Region : United Kingdom
Model : TL-WR940N
Hardware Version : Not Clear
Firmware Version :
ISP : BT
I've been having some issues with my BT Broadband for a while, so decided to switch to a new router, a TP TD-W8960N, however setting up QOS isn't as easy as I had anticipated (I'm fairly new to this!).
My main issue is that we have a fairly limited broadband connection, but I need to backup work using backblaze. This is a pain because as soon as it starts to backup it eats what bandwidth we have. What I want to know is can I just limit the range of ip-addresses which they use for their backup? Is there a simpler auto-QOS approach I could use? The router is currently running the latest firmware that isn't in beta. Also - do these routers auto-update firmware?

I have got a 1TB external HDD...I want to use this to backup my data (dokuments , pics , video) that are on 2 desktops and one laptop---
AS I understand the terminology a I won't have enough room to do image backups (these back up all info incl OS ??) as on pc is usingb 677 gb and the other 400 gb ---- and anyway I can re-install windows if anything goes wrong...
SO---am I able to do this-
1. connect the ext- HDD to PC running win 7 64 bit....create a folder called "win 7 64 bit" and then drag and drop filesand folders into that folder(or use windows backup..which i am unfamilar with)
2. then connect to PC running Vista 64 bit ..create a flder called "Vista 64 bit" and do as above....
3. Do the same for the laptop running win 7 32 bit
Am I right in assumming that because it's just data I can put info from different OS on to it without and conflicts when connecting it to different Pc's?

Two desktop computers with windows 7 home premium.Router: Netgear WNR2000v2 (which is NOT IPv6 compliant).External HD: 2TB Fantom.I have the external HD connected to one of the desktops via USB. I'd like to use it to back up the second computer to this HD.How do I get the second computer to recognize this as a backup target?Incidentally I've had problems getting HomeGroup setup since IPv6 is required for HomeGroup. I assume the problems are because the router isn't IPv6 compliant. I've tried the Microsoft Fixit 50410 (Use IPv4 instead of IPv6 in prefix policies. I've also reverted using Microsoft Fixit 50440 (Enable IPv6).

So I have a really neat computer sitting here, 2500K, P8z68-v, samsung 830 64gb ssd, corsair vengeance 16gb, deskstar hdd, firepro v5800
I have a non-descript trendnet 56K v.92 dial up modem installed to pci slot1 on my mobo. The phone company says they can't get a quicker connection than 31.2 Kbps established to dial up users in this area. The real issue is the data transfer rate.I have seen it reach as high as 6.xx Kbps but generally hovers around 2.5 Kbps. Now it is down to 1.xx Kbps and I took the last 48 hours downloading all the updates for windows and several other updates for hard ware etc.Now I need the ATI firepro update and 114 Mb will take over 16 hours at my average speed, and some 32 hours at the new slower speed

We are currently using Cisco ACS 5.3.0.40.2. One of the Services Selection Policy it hosts is:
Receive Authentication request from a wireless controller for a wireless userIf the wireless user's username contains a particular domain suffix, the request is proxied to an external proxy server using an External Proxy service (configured for both local/remote accounting)On receiving an Acccess-Accept from the external proxy, the user is given access and ACS 5 will start logging account packets for the username (nothing appears in the RADIUS authentication logs - ACS 5 it seems doesn't log proxied authentication requests) The above setup works fine in most instances. We start to have problems when an external proxy server strips the domain suffix off the username in the Access-Accept packet e.g.
ACS 5 proxies an Access-Request to an external proxy server (with Username = someuser@somwhere.com)The external proxy replies with an Access-Accept (with Username = someuser)The user 'someuser' is given access but subsequent accounting attempts fail because their username (without the domain suffix) doesn't match the Service Selection PolicyIs there any way to get ACS 5.3 to log proxied authentication requests? If not, can I configure ACS 5.3 to use the username in the Access-Request packet (rather than the username in the Access-Accept packet) for accounting?

This network has a peer network with a mixture of Win 7, Vista and XP computers. The network problem I am having is with an XP computer that was able to access network shares on a Win 7 Pro (64-bit) computer yesterday, but cannot today. I tried repair steps that have worked for me in the past, but didn't today.
1. Rebooted.
2. Turned off Windows Firewall.
3. Re-ran the Network Setup Wizard and select turn on file and print sharing.
4. Changed IP configuration to choose NETBIOS over TCP/IP.
5. Uninstalled AV software.
Error Messages that I have been receiving:
1. When attempting to connect to a share on Win 7 PC: "Microsoft Windows Network: The specified server cannot perform the requested operation. The connection has not been restored."
2. When trying to view the computers in the workgroup: "Workgroup is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. The specified server cannot perform the requested operation.
3. When using the command, "NET VIEW" from the command prompt: "System Error 58 has occurred.

I'm trying to set up an IPSec tunnel between 2 3845 routers that each sit in a private LAN behind an ADSL modem. Each modem does have a static public IP address from the ISP.
Thus:
Cisco 3845-1 <-> ADSL modem <-> WAN <-> ADSL modem <-> Cisco 3845-2
3845-1
