Cisco Switching/Routing :: Catalyst 2900 XL Console Access Disabled
Jun 30, 2012I just purchased a used Catalyst 2900 XL switch and have not been succesful in connecting to the console via minicom 2.5 running on Ubuntu 12.04 or 11.10, I don’t even get junk charecters in the terminal or echo on input. The switch passes POST according to the LEDs on the front and the network ports are fucntional for switching purpouses.
I’m using a Prolific PL2303 USB-Serial adapter, which works with minicom to console into another device. I’ve tried every baud rate available and tried combonations of hardware flow control, software flow control, and niether.I’ve tested the pinout of the console cable and all pins map correctly according to Cisco spec.I’ve also tried Cutecom, putty, and screen. I have not tried HyperTerminal because I do not use windows.Is it possible that the previous owner disabled console access? Do I need to reboot the switch each time I test a different baud rate?

Oct 25, 2011I just set up a brand new LinksysE4200 router at one end of my home, and a Linksys RE1000 range expander at the other end in order to provide full WiFi coverage to my entire house. Everything is working great except for one important detail.. There is currently no way to disable SSID broadcast on the RE1000 range expander! I just flashed it with the latest firmware (v1.0.01 build 2, Jul 22, 2011) , but I'm still unable to disable it, even though it is disabled on the E4200 from which it's receiving the signal it's rebroadcasting. I am seriously considering returning the RE1000. Linksys. add the ability to disable SSID broadcast on the RE1000 in a (not too distant) future firmware upgrade! As far as I'm concerend, this is a MUST HAVE feature in order for this product to even be considered for use in any sensitive network environment.

Jul 17, 2011I've had the wireless G adapter for a year now, and connections work with both 2.4GHz and 5GHz G connections. I just bought a wireless N adapter (2.4GHz and 5GHz capable), and cannot get an N connection.. On 2.4GHz it connects to G only. And on 5GHz, I don't even see the whole band to connect to it.
I've tried disabling the 5GHz band on the E3000, then even setting the 2.4GHz band to no security. I still get a G only connection.My laptop can connect to 2.4GHz and get 144Mbps N speeds.Router is at latest firmware.I've researched this online, but can't find anything concrete.

Sep 9, 2012My old modem from Roadrunner (Time Warner) died and the service man replaced it with a Arris TG852 modem/router. then my problems began. I would like to have the Arris modem act like a modem and not a router. The network governed by the DIR works fine but none of the clients can connect to the internet. Below are the steps I have tried.in both steps below, The DIR is connected to the Arris using the Ethernet not the Wan port.
1. I tried disabling DHCP on the Arris router and setting a static IP address for the DIR router. This worked for a bit and then quit. Some of the computers said there were duplicate IP addresses on the network. If fact the same IP address showed up in the DNS list of the Arris and the DIR routers.. even though the Arris router had DNS disabled.
2. After reading other forums. I enabled DHCP on the Arris and set it to passout IP address between 192.168.0.2 and 192.168.0.99. I then setup the DOR to pass out addresses between 192.168.0.100 and 192.168.0.200. then moved the DIR into the DMZ of the Arris. Still no access to the internet.

Jul 1, 2011I was quite excited about E4200 I got yesterday. Everything works perfect except front LED light start blinking a few hours later. Don't know why it happens in a sudden and non-stop. After several tries, I found that disabling SSID broadcast for both 2.4 and 5GHz stops the blinking.Of course, before doing that, I upgraded firmware to 1.0.02, reset to factory defaults and finally set up E4200 manually rather than using Cisco Connect. Now the LED light is continuously lit.

I have set the logging level on the 2900 router to informational and see no errors of any kind popping up when I try to scan the router from SpiceWorks. Spiceworks just returns a generic "unable to contact host" message.

I will also have a Cisco ISR 2900 at each site running SRST for my voice system. I have some experience with BGP and am not scared at all to support it if need be. That said, I am currently looking at pros and cons of going with a managed router from this company vs managing my own. Actually, I will manage my own regardless and would just plug it into the managed router. My router is perfectly capable of handling the BGP protocol but I am hoping that I can get some opinions from all of you.

I put back the old router and all is fine which eliminates any cable or switch error. I have the router totally disconnect. I notice the configuration is in place. My question is there any diagnostics that I can run to see if there is any hardware failure. It seems to boot up fine.

Dec 1, 2011I've had a WRT160N v3 for a couple of years, and I've noticed that the wireless security setting is often set to disabled when I go into the configuration, even though I've set to enabled previously. It goes like this....
I've setup the router to have WPA2 Personal security enabled, with a passphrase. I have several devices that use wireless that connect to it everyday. I recently received a new device, so I went into the Linksys configuration to get my passphrase, and the Security is set to disabled. So, I enable it again, configure a the device, and have no problems.
This has happened many times. I just happen to be in the router configuration and check the wireless security tab, and it is set to disabled.
My first thought was that maybe there had been a power loss (although, I can't remember the last power outage we had in my area). However, every other setting was retained, so I can't see why this would be the only one that changes (and it's a rather important setting). Additionally, I was configuring a blue-ray player last night, trying to see if it was better with a wired setting from another Access Point, and the setting was disabled, so I enabled it again. I made changes to the BR player, then changed it back to a wireless connection. I checked the security setting on the Linksys, and AGAIN it was disabled.

He was in middle of configuration, so now at present, only telnet is able to login on "R2>" user mode, enable password is not set, so getting "R2>en % No password set R2>" I have tried different terminal software but no output from Console Port, changed the Console Cables, replace with working console cables, change speed (baud) settings. Also tried to connect same console with "AUX" port and got same error mentioned above. AUX Port responds but I am not able to change mode (R2#) because of incomplete running-config. it seems "Console Port" is physically damaged.
