Cisco WAN :: Why Does Automatic DHCP Configuration No Longer Work On 1900 Series
Jan 8, 2013
We have been using a dhcp and tftp server to automatically configure branch WAN routers such as 1751's and 1841's for years but, have recently purchased a 1921 and 1941 as possible next generation replacements. The problem is when the 1900 series power up instead of getting a dhcp address directions to the tftp server it boots up and asks for the user name to be immediately changed or you will be "locked out". Any workaround to this so that I can again go back to download my common configuration? Or any other way of automatically configuring the newer version ios? Doing extra steps for 500 WAN branch routers is time consuming. Doing configurations without automation for that many is moving in the wrong direction.

I bought 1921-SEC-k9 so i have security license installed: Technology Package License Information for Module:'c1900' [code] Now I'd like to know if SSL VPN comes with that license or do I need to buy additional VPN SSL license to use it? If so.. i'd just use IPsec... i need client-to-site configuration.. can you point me to tutorial or just a basic config.. because for ipsec i just find site-to-site tutorials on internet.

I can see the console on the router. (Using the USB console connected to a Macintosh.) I was configuring the router though this console connection, and I created a new user (priv level 15) and removed the default 'cisco' user. So I'm stuck at the username/password login prompt now.
I decided to do the password recovery procedure (via the cisco doc I found etc), but I cannot break into ROMMON during the boot process. I'm not sure if that's because my Mac isn't sending the break, or what.
The pw recovery doc says you can "remove flash" if you can't break into the boot sequence. However, I cannot find any instructions on how to remove the flash. I've opened the router, and I see one very small daughter card on the main board that I think is the flash, but I'm not about to start arbitrarly prying parts off.

Sure this is a simple one. New to the 1900 series routers, have a 1921 with IOS 15.1. Noticed that there is a standard interface labeled Embedded-Service-Engine0/0. What the purpose of this is? Cannot seem to find any detail on it. See extract from default config below.

Is there a router (1900-3900 series router) that will support a 100FX fiber connection. We use to use 2800-3800 and 2600-3700 series routers with FX fiber interface now these routers are no longer available and our need for 100Mbps FX is still a requirement.

I've got a problem with DHCP running on a cisco 1900 series router, 1921 to be precise. The Data VLAN works perfectly, i configured a ip helper address and its working. Problem tough is VLAN 20. This is the voice vlan. As u can see in the config below, this has been configured using VRRP and VRF for failover purposes. I did more of these configurations, and they all worked fine, just not with this particular router!
As u will notice i deleted all the not needed to know information or i X'ed it!

I'm a bit new to Cisco and i find this AAA a bit confusing..I've turend on AAA by:aaa new-model
Can I use this "default" list for WebVPN ? And what would be a different if i create new "sslvpn" list..Also when I'll be creating user for VPN remote access.. that user will also exist in local database and have access to router via SSH?Because the research I've done it doesn't seem you can group users in different "aaa groups" e.g. user admin belongs under "admin" aaa group which can do ssh to router, users for VPN can only do remote VPN access and not SSH and login into router.i saw ASA has some attribute for users called remote-user
•admin, in which users are allowed access to the configuration mode. This option also allows a user to connect via remote access.
•nas-prompt, in which users are allowed access to the EXEC mode.
•remote-access, in which users are allowed access to the network.
But i can't find this option in IOS on my 1900 Series ISR router.

I have a Buffalo WHR-G300N router & I am having probs with assigning a static address to a nas device.I have set up the static ip address i want to use in the nas When I look at the dhcp leases in the router, the device shows up as having an automatic assignment with a different ip address to the one set in the nas.If I manually assign the ip address which I want to use, or, if I edit the automatically assigned entry, the old one stays as an automatic assignment. This means that I then have 2 ip addresses for 1 mac address. When I try to access the nas, with only the automatically assigned address present in the router settings, I can still access it using the ip address I have manually assigned to the nas, even though the manual ip does not show in the router. How can I delete the automatically assigned dhcp lease & just keep my static one??

I am trying to determine the best way to setup my E4200 V2 so that it is “uplinked” correctly to a Comcast Dory Modem/router. Currently we have the E4200 V2 router plugged into the Comcast Dory Modem/Router using a CAT6 cable from one of the Ethernet ports on the Comcast device to the WAN port on the E4200. The E4200 is set to “Automatic Configuration - DHCP.”
We are trying to do two things. First better WIFI in the center of the house and for a TV located next to the Comcast device, and second, have all devices in this house see and access all other devices including the Samsung SmartTV, my son’s two systems upstairs, the 3 systems in the room with the E4200, and the one network printer. In the room with the E4200 we have 3 computers and one network printer. 3 of those 4 devices support WIFI so we don’t have to use all 4 Ethernet ports on the E4200.
I see others talking about running the CAT6 cable to an Ethernet port on the E4200 instead of the WAN port and setting it to “Bridge Mode.” Right now the system appears to be working fine although we are sometimes experiencing brief dropped connections with the devices hardwired into the E4200.
Should I be running the E4200 in “Bridge” mode or “Automatic DHCP” mode and which port on E4200 should the CAT6 from Comcast be plugged into?

Why is it that the dhcp on my router is no longer able to give out ips or rather it assign them as for as it concerned as it will list say 199.170.0.102 but the device will have none or make up one for it's self and never get the ip that the routers dhcp gave it this happens on all devices. I know power cycling will fix it temporally but usually it will start doing it again in a few hours also I know that I can use a static ip this was my way around this problem but I have one device that won't use nothing but dhcp a printer. I had an old linksys router that did this and I figured it's old it's slow time for a new one after a few months it started, some computers are on the fringe of being able to get a signal but are still fair also even with static ips they sometime stop connecting and we have to disable the connection then reconnect to fix it the router is a dlink 615 dual band set to only G/B because 1 most devices only g 2 the one computer that has a wireless n is 70 ft away and works better with g.

I have been using the same Toshiba A105 for the past three years at work. Recently I had to reinstall XP and since then have not been able to connect to my works wireless/wired internet most of the time. I have no trouble connecting to my wireless at home or basically anywhere else except work. Once in a rare while it will connect to work but if it's wireless it's low connectivity and if it's wired it's prone to just drop out again randomly. Everyone else at work is able to connect wirelessly/wired without issue. I've tried static IP and changing my MAC addressThere are some unsecured wireless networks in range that I can connect to but don't want to for work transactions.

I have upgraded a C3750G-12S-E to c3750-ipserviceslmk9-tar.122-55.SE5This switch is a distribution layer switch for one of my remote sites. it contains an ip helper-address on the site vlan's SVI.DHCP relay is no longer functioning for client PCs. Static address assignment allows full network functionality. I enabled debug ip dhcp server packet. [code] Actually I am betting you upgraded your IOS from something before 12.2(50)SE to 12.2(50)SE or later. We added enhancement CSCso19800 which will validate DHCP options when we are a relay agent.

I'm trying to fix the network at a student housing building and the system is kind of a mess. We bought a new E4200 to replace our old Linksys router which no one knows the admin pw to. We have four switches for 50 connections throughout the four story house and when switching the connections over to the new E4200 all of the wired connections no longer work. Switch back to the old router and presto. How do I need to change the settings with the E4200 to get it to work?
Also, as it's a thick old house the E4200's wireless only covers maybe half of it...I purchased two wireless repeaters to put on the 3rd and 4th floors, are these simple to install with the router?

DHCP is handing out correct IP info and DNS info. How do I route the new private network (10.1.9.*) out to our existing 10.1.4.1. (management IP is 10.1.4.253) Can this be done within the WLC ?

Will the 3500 Series Access-Points work? (Of course without the spectrum intelligence feature)?
The Q&A says the following: Are there any concerns with supporting the new Cisco Aironet 3500 Series Access Points with the older Cisco 2000, 2100, 4100, or 4400 Series Wireless LAN Controllers?

I have a small, simple small business network. There are 2 switches - an 8-port switch connected to my main Windows server (which is the DHCP provider for the network), and a 24-port switch which is plugged into the 8-port switch.
I replaced these switches (Dell unmanaged switches) with the Cisco 200 series smart switches (the 8-port and 26-port models). When I plug the 26-port switch into the 8-port switch, it is unable to get its DHCP address from the Windows server. Also, any device plugged into the 26-port switch cannot communicate with any other device, and all of the ethernet port lights flash at the same time at the same frequency - quite a light show!
If I plug the Windows server DIRECTLY into the 26-port switch it receives a DHCP address.
I have tried a 2nd Cisco 26-port swtich and it does the same thing, so I assume it is not a hardware issue.

I have just bought my first non-domestic router, a CISCO 887VA-K9 which needs basic configuration to get it working. I have a copy of the configuration guide (334 pages) and CP Express user's guide (94 pages) and have spent an hour reading but either they are missing something or my brain is too small to figure out step 1. How to get started. Perhaps from where to download a CP Express installation kit for Windows.
Is the only way via a terminal emulator connected via a serial port ? Is there a graphical interface I can use ? Are there any basic tutorials for beginners ? This is probably the only non-domestic routrer I shall work on so I don't want to invest in a full training course. I just need enough to plug in the ISP credentials and set up DHCP.
