We ordered 2 Cisco AIR-LAP1242AG-E-K9 Wireless Access Points with 4 AIR-ANT5135D-R antennas.We accidentally ordered the 5GHz antennas instead of the 2.4GHz antennas.Would it be possible to use the 5GHz antennas as 2.4GHz antennas?If so, are there any down sides to it?
View 15 RepliesI am wondering if anyone has seen this before. We have about 50 AIR-LAP1242AG-E-K9 access points connected to a WLC5508 running 7.4.100.0. These were all being used as autonomous APs previously and were converted when the controller was installed. About 12 of these have a lovely feature where their radio interface goes down at random. The radio is still in enable mode but the opertational status is DOWN. It seems to happen particularly when there has been a power outage and the AP rejoins the controller. All of the other 1242s are fine and never sees this problem. The APs are all on power injectors.
Once the radio is down, the only way I can get the to come back online is by doing the following:
1. Set the radio admin status to "disable" and apply
2. Turn off CDP
3. Reboot the AP Wait until the AP is back online and registered on the controller
4. Enable the radio admin status and CDP.
If I do not remove the CDP setting I cannot bring the radio back to "UP". I know we had previous issues with autonomous 1242 APs that did not like CDP being enabled. Have I perhaps got a bunch that are like that? Despite these having operated as autonomous APs they are AIR-LAP1242 from the factory.
I'm working in a campus environment that has an existing wireless network using a Cisco AIR-WLC2112-K9 controller.There are 8 AIR-LAP1242G-A-K9 access points connected to the controller. Each access point has a 5.0GHZ 4.5dbi Cisco omnidirectional antenna, although the AP only supports 2.4GHZ.
Q1. Why a 5.0ghz antenna might had been used with a 2.4ghz AP, and if we can expect increased performance if we replace the antennas with 2.4ghz ones?
Q2. On the controller, the antenna gain is set to 0 for each AP. Is there also a benefit to leaving that 0 as opposed to 9 for 4.5dbi?
I am building a BOM for a customer and I need to present cheaper options than 3500 or 3600 APs. I thought of these two models but I don't know what models of antennas to pick.1602 is a 3X3 MIMO with 3 antenna connectors. How many 2.4 GHz and how many 5.8 GHz antennas should I pick for each radio?2602 is a 3X4 MIMO with 4 antenna connectors. In this case I suppose there are 2 connectors per radio.

View 4 Replies View RelatedHow do I know if I'm using 2.4 or 5ghz? I would like the laptop and ps3/net flix to use the 5ghz and everything else to use 2.4ghz. I used the e3000 CD fro the setup. When I was at the last part of the setup, when it gives you a ssid name and password. I deleted it and typed in a name that I could remember. I clicked the button for the next step and everything was complete. I also received another name for guest to use the computer. The e3000 setup just game me some wild name like running water.
I would like to know since I have two different names, which on e is using 5ghz and which one is using 2.4thz? Can you tell me if the e3000 automatically have the first name use 5ghz and the guest just 2.4ghz on the second name?

He is in a remote office with a 1142 which is set to H-Reap talking back to our 5508. Our WLC is running 7.0.166 The laptop has an intel ulitmate 6300agn wireless card with the latest 15.x drivers.
We are using an SSID with wpa2 and 802.1x auth back to our ACS server using PEAP with our windows credentials.attached is what i am seeing on the wcs troubleshooting page.When i do a debug client on the WLC i see many reauthentications coming from the client on the different radio.

Now this may be not be the issue thats causing our dropouts a couple times a day as this is happening every 5 mins.
2 days ago my e1000 died, so I went big and bought the e4200 (due to newness, its already loaded with Firmware 1.0.03 build 14) to aleviate my networking woes. I'm running into an issue where I'm utilizing both the 2.4Ghz bands and the 5Ghz band. My desktop as an AE1000, and I'm utilizing that on the 5Ghz band. Everything else in the house (Dell laptop, 2x iPhone 4 and an HP printer) are all connecting to the network wirelessly.
I have had 0 network issues with regards to my wired connections, or my 5Ghz connection. But my 2.4Ghz connection will continuously be unavailable. I have both bands set to brodcast, they have different names so my AE1000 can connect via 5Ghz band. Both yesterday evening, and this morning, my phones, laptop and printer cannot connect, and for the most part, the network doesn't show up on available networks. When it does show up, the devices can't connect.I'm proficient enough to do the general home networking, but I'm at a loss as to how to fix this, without a daily reboot of the router (which seems excessive and unwarranted for a 2 day old e4200 [or any router to be honest]).
I've just bought an access point AP1141N for my small business but unfortunately there is only Radio 0- 2.4G available through web interface. It is working fine but I would like to have access to radio 1 (5Ghz) as well.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have an AP541N-A-K9. For the past couple weeks it stops work at 5:00pm. The clients can see the SSID but when they connect it fails. The only way to get this to work again, is to set the radio to 5GHz 802.11N. Setting the radio to anything else does not allow the clients to connect.
I have some older clients so I need this broadcast G as well.
I have upgrade the software to AP541N-K9-2.0(1). Does not make a difference. Reset to Factory defaulst and reconfig does not make a difference. There are no Rouge AP's in the area.
Between the issues these have passing DHCP from a Windows server and now this, I'm thinking these devices are not fully baked.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have been using the Asus RT-n53 for about a year now and had little to no problems with it. Lately, my wife's iPhone has been dropping its connection to the RT-n53. It was probably a problem with her piece of apple crap, but I thought I would update the firmware on the RT-n53. I found that my firmware was way out of date, so I updated to the latest version.
With the newest firmware installed, I can no longer detect the 5Ghz band with my PlayBook. Before the update, all of the other devices in the house were not 5Ghz capable, so my PlayBook was the only device that used the 5Ghz radio on the RT-n53. Now, the SSID for the 5Ghz band just isn't there any more. In the configuration settings for the RT-n53, everything points to "it should be working"... 5Ghz radio is enabled, SSID broadcast is enabled. I have tried changing the wireless mode from "N Only" to "Auto" to "Legacy". I have fiddled with channel settings, encryption settings, etc. Even tried changing the SSID a few times. Multiple reboot, and still, the 5Ghz SSID just doesn't appear on any devices.
How come my 2.4GHz client can't see my 5GHz client? Shouldn't they be visible through the DIR-825 router?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a CISCO AIR-LAP1242AG-A-K9 Wireless Aironet 1240AG and i do not have any wireless controllers i just want this to act as a AP and not have to depend on any thing else for its config. I can not get the IOS to TFTP over. Here are the steps i take.
Step 1 The static IP address of the PC on which your TFTP server software runs should be between 10.0.0.2 and 10.0.0.30. The IP address of the AP is 10.0.0.1.
Step 2 Make sure that the PC contains the access point image file (such as c1200-k9w7-tar.122-15.JA.tar for a 1200 series access point) in the TFTP server folder and that the TFTP server is activated.
Step 3 Rename the access point image file in the TFTP server folder to c1200-k9w7-tar.default for a 1200 series access point, c1130-k9w7-tar.default for an 1130 series access point, and c1240-k9w7-tar.default for a 1240 series access point.
Step 4 Connect the PC to the access point using a Category 5 (CAT5) Ethernet cross over cable .
Step 5 Disconnect power from the access point.
Step 6 Press and hold MODE while you reconnect power to the access point.
Step 7 Hold the MODE button until the status LED turns red (approximately 20 to 30 seconds) and then release. You will see the IOS file being TFTP to the AP. Once this is done on the screen reboot the AP by pulling out the power cable.
Step 8 Wait until the access point reboots, as indicated by all LEDs turning green followed by the Status LED blinking green.
Step 9 After the access point reboots, reconfigure it using the GUI or the CLI.
I setup a mini wireless LAN network lab with a not for resale 2106 wireless lan controller and a sales air-lap1242ag access point. I do not have a DHCP and DNS in my lab environment. I have configured the WLC with the basic configuration using the CLI wizard, i also configured the WLC as a DHCP server for clients that will be connecting to the APs associated to the controller.
I powered up the AP and connect the ethernet port directly to the controller, the controller issued an IP address to the AP, the AP downloaded a new operating system from the controller but failed to join the controller.
I check both debug message on the controller console and the trap messages on the controller's GUI and it say the AP could not download a configuration from the controller and it is beacuse of invalid license. Below is the trap message:

Also, I tried to log into the GUI of the AP using the both the username and password ''Cisco'' but I cannot get into the device. I can only get in through the CLI. In the CLI, almost all the commands I enter gives an error the it is disabled. I don't know what to do any more, I want to know if the access point is faulty or i am not doing the right thing.
I have an AIR-LAP1242AG-A-K9. Straight out of the box I thought it would have the GUI functional but this is not the case. I am brand new to Cisco products so it is taking me a while to get use to them and to TelNet but from what I have read in about 6 different manuals none have explained how I can access the configure terminal command when It doesn't show up. I am in privileged mode with access of: AP001c.588e.a266#show privilege. Current privilege level is 15.If I can't get into global configuration mode I cant enable the GUI, turn on the wireless.

Issue: 5 AP's in another building loses connection to the network and drops off from the Controller. Sometimes it's all of them. Sometimes it's just 1 or 2 or 3 of them. Happens very randomly. Somtimes once a week. Sometimes, once every two weeks. Only way that I know how to get them back up is to just power cycle them. Once power cycled it comes right back up.
This has been happening for awhile now and I really need to get to the bottom of this. I understand it can be number of issues, like cabling, or power issues but what I really need is a steps to troubleshoot to narrow down. what to look for, settings on controller? etc...

My desktop PC which has an Asus PCE-N13 Wireless Adapter with two stock SMA antennas receives a very poor signal due to the significant distance between my desktop and the router.In order to improve my signal strength, I thought about buying better 3rd party antennas and specifically external ones which I could place closer to the router that connect to the SMA connections on my wireless adapter via a wire. There's many of these antennas for sale I see, but I'm unsure which is best suited for my situation.

I have a big open area where it is not possible to place ap's.The only placement is a mast in the middle of the area.I have a AP1552 with 5,2 db antennas there.Can i get better coverage if i place 3 or 4 ap's with directional antennas ?Or should i try with a 12dBi AIR-ANT24120 ?
