Linksys Wireless Router :: WRT54g2 Handing Out Wrong Default Gateway
Jan 19, 2012
I'd like to add a WRT54g2 to my LAN. I'd like it to communicate with my existing LAN router, and not to talk directly to the LAN. Therefore, in Basic Setup, I don't have the top part (Internet Setup) configured. Is that a mistake? But, it seems that when I enable DHCP, it hands out its own IP as gateway, and then doesn't seem to send the traffic on upstream. When I configure clients manually with the real router IP, they work fine.
So, I'd like, I guess, Linksys to forward traffic on a static route to real router. How do I do this? Adding a route to real router yields the error, "maybe default route already exists."

So network was running fine for about a year or so. Network consists of 1 Motorola SB6120 cable modem attached to a D-Link DIR-601 wireless router. All settings were default except for SSID and WPA password. One day I just couldn't access internet anymore. I've narrowed it down to the default gateway that is being given out through DHCP. The default gateway that is being given out is the IP of the modem (192.168.100.1) and not of the Router (192.168.0.1). I can't find any option on Wireless router to be able to force the gateway address when handing out the gateway IP. Theoretically I thought I should be able to put router on same subnet as modem as 192.168.100.2 but that still doesn't work. If I set the IP adresses statically on the PCs and give it the Gateway of the Router everything works fine. I should mention this is for my boss' house and basically I dont want him calling me everytime he has a friend come over and I have to talk em through setting up a Static IP.
And just for an example this is what I get if I use DHCP:
IP Address: 192.168.0.155
Mask: 255.255.255.0
DNS: 192.168.0.1
Default Gateway: 192.168.100.1
And If I want it to work I have to change the default gateway to 192.168.0.1 I've tried updating routers firmware and reset to factory default numerous times. Is it possible for a router DHCP stop working?

I've configured a VPN IPSEC on my ASA5510. It Assigned IP/NETMASK/Gateway via a DHCP Server on the LAN.The problem is that when a client is connected to the VPN , it takes the right IP and NETMASK. ( 192.168.1.109 / 255.255.255.0) but the Default Gateway is wrong ( 192.168.1.1). It should be the default Gateway of my LAN router ( 192.168.1.229).

This is terminating on an ASA c5510 sec+ running 8.3(2) Client devices running XP with the same VPN client get an address from the ASA pool e.g. 10.10.50.1 with no default gateway. Users are able to connect without a problem. Windows 7 (32bit) clients with this same VPN client get this address but get a default gateway 10.10.50.2 and are unable to connect for obvious reasons.

I have a RV042 router. The problem that I am having with it is that the DHCP is giving out the wrong Default Gateway and DNS Server. There is no option to change the DHCP server IP on any of the settings pages on the router. I am begining to think that there might not be a way to do it. I see that there is an option for the DNS under the DHCP page but the Public IP that is being handed out is not the one on that page. I also have 2 WAN connections hooked up as well a DSL link and a Cable link (the cable link is the primary one).
The following information is provided in an effort to resolve this issue:
IP of Router 10.0.0.2
IP of DHCP Server (the one that is being handed out):10.0.0.1
IP of DNS (the one that is being handed out): 10.0.0.11
What I want to it be.
IP of Router: 10.0.0.2
IP of DHCP 10.0.0.2
IP of DNS 10.0.0.2

I have a WRT54GX2 router and my laptop is connected wirelessly to the router. It worked fine before but now, the connection is only local, it's not connected to the internet. On the router, it says: Default Gateway: 0.0.0.0.I think that it should say 192.168.1.1 instead.I tried dhcp release and renew but it didn't work. The firmware version is 1.01.22.

I am currently using an E900 wireless router. The router is on the second story so I have to use a wireless router booster to enhance the signal strength. I have been using the booster for well over a month with no issues whatsoever; however, tonight I attempt to get onto World of Warcraft and I keep getting disconnected every 5 minutes. After I run the diagnostic it fixes the problem and says that the "default gateway not available". I tried restarting the router, restarting the booster, unplugging the wireless adapter, checked the firewall, and also restarted my computer.

I have upgraded the firmware on my Linksys BEFSR41 V4.3 router. On this router i used Statis IP (so DHCP enabled). This worked fine on my network, until this upgrade. Now when i try to ad another static IP , or when i want to change something in the Routing-tab, i get this message ' Wrong Gateway Input! It should be the same subnet with WAN IP'. Strange because i haven't changed anything in the settings.I already did a complete reset on the router, still the same problem.

How can I change default gateway and DNS's for L2TP type of connection? I've tried to specify them in static IP address first and then switched to L2TP as adviced in one forum, but it didn't work. I don't understand why such settings as Gateway and DNS servers cann't be specified as for PPTP connection. Firmware is 2.0.37.

I am using a WRT310N. I have a Cisco ASA5505 as my firewall and don't need the routing capabilities of the WRT310N. So I just plug the LAN port on the WRT310N directly to my LAN switch. I just need the WRT310N to have an IP address for management. So I configure the LAN with an IP address, but there is no way to set the default gateway on the LAN. You can only set the default gateway on the WAN interface, which I don't use, since I am using this in an AP only type of configuration.

We were hit by hurricane Sandy a couple weeks ago and lost power for a week and a half. Now that our cable has been restored I noticed that the wireless internet wasn't working. The wired internet works fine to this computer but no Wi-fi.I think the problem is the routers default gateway. It's supposed to be 192.168.1.1 but right now it's 24.191.112.1 .So far I have tried:
-Powercycling everything
-ipconfig/ flush DNS
-ipconfig/ release and ipconfig/renew
-Checking all the wires are pugged in fine (They are).

I have my E1200 connected to my Netgear FVS318 router (which is a wired router) and the Netgear is connected to the internet. When a wireless client attempts to connect to the internet after automatically receiving an IP from the E1200, they do not have internet access as the default gateway that gets assigned is the IP of the E1200 192.168.2.100, which is not correct. It should be assigned 192.168.2.1, which is the IP of the Netgear router. Thefore, I have to manually set their IP addresses to use 192.168.2.1. How do you configure the E1200 to assign the correct Default Gateway IP to wireless clients who want to use DHCP?

I have a WRT54G2 router (V1) with the most recent firmware that serves as the gateway between my Internet connection and my home network. Over the past few months, I've noticed that the router seems to consistently become unusable due to high latency when it runs for any period of time. The internet connection is working, but the latency is sometimes as high as 2000ms to ping Google or to run a test from Speedtest.net. When a computer is directly plugged into the cable modem provided by my ISP, the problems resolve.
Restarting the router proivdes a resolution of the problem, but over time the latency issues increase again until it needs to be restarted. Right now, I have it on a mechanical (plug) timer that restarts it every morning around 4AM, but this still doesn't seem to fix the overall issue; I've had to restart the router manually twice today. Before restart, my ping will be over 1000ms; afterward, it will drop back to 20-60ms.Note that the download and upload speeds don't seem to be affected by this, just the latency itself.
The problem appears on both wireless and wired connections.I'm not sure if this is a sign that our router is failing (it was purchased in 2009, so as far as consumer-grade solutions go, it's lasted a pretty decent span), or if there's some misconfiguration on my end, or if something with my ISP is making my router flip out. What can/should I do to fix this issue (please note that flashing the router with DD-WRT is not an option, this version generally sees decreased performance when DD-WRT is installed).EDITED TO ADD: I have ruled out internal traffic causing the problem (I reviewed the log files for the router and tried to identify any unknown stuff, but it seems fine). I can't quite figure out exactly what causes the router to develop the issue, but once it does, I've noticed the following:
Extremely high latency (1000ms+) for pings from any computer inside the network to an outside destination? The router itself cannot ping or traceroute once it has started developing these high latency issues - if you use the router's PING feature, it returns all timeouts. It does not seem to correlate with any specific type of traffic.

I just purchased a Buffalo WZR-600DHP router and have been having a weird issue. When using the router on the shipped DD-WRT firmware I consistently get "The default gateway is not available" error and I have to reset my wireless adapter on my laptop. This issue doesn't occur on my hardwired desktop or interestingly enough when the Buffalo router was switched to the "user-friendly" firmware the issue didn't occur either. Both times the router was on the DD-WRT firmware I've had the default gateway issue.

I have an Amilo Pa1510 (Windows XP) and I can connect to the router but not surfing (browser doesnt load any website). I have tried the commands "ping" to my IP address and it works but ping to the default gateway IP address doesnt work either.I am using the same wireless connection right now with my smartphone. I have downloaded an app that executes the ipconfig command in my Android. I have used the same gateway IP address in my laptop but it didnt work either. I have tried to set automatically the IP addresses in my laptop without success too. I have turned off and on both laptop and router and also checked in the system window that all the processes such as DHCP and DNS servers are automatic and enabled.

hrome threw me a DNS lookup failed. I go into my network settings and I noticed that I had limited connectivity. It would switch between no network access and no internet access every few seconds. After a bit of fiddling around, I got it to connect through assigning myself a static IP. This isn't exactly convenient because I use this computer on multiple networks. When I try to have it on automatic IP, I get no IP address or default gateway when I do an ipconfig /all. It would appear that my router quit assigning my laptop an IP for no reason whatsoever. DHCP is enabled on the router, and all other devices work fine. What could possibly be the problem here? I'm 99% sure it's not an IP conflict either. It's not being MAC filtered because I'm on the thing right now posting this through a static IP. It's not my A/V because it's worked great in the past. Perhaps I should also mention it occasionally says "unidentified network" instead of the SSID

I have a central office and two branch offices, these offices are connected by a private routing service that has no connection to the Internet, the telecommunications operator in each office installs a router with a LAN and a WAN IP and configuration of these devices cannot be changed except the LAN IP. Only the central office network that is 192.168.0.0 have a router that has internet access. Remote offices have no access to the internet, what is needed is that remote offices can access the internet using ADSL router 192.168.0.254 at the central office. There are a small devices in each remote office that must connect to the internet and do not support any configuration except IP, mask and gateway, for example you cannot add a static route. Currently the pc's at remote offices has IP communication with the server from the central office using a static route. put some VPN routers between each LAN and the operator's routers (where RT yellow star appears in the diagram) and put the hosts of the two branch offices same IP range that the central office network? I had thought to use RSV400 routers?

Does ip default-gateway have any effect on a L3 device such as a 2811 router? I always thought that on a L3 device the default route would supersede any such command assuming it is accepted.
We have a client device that cannot be reached for managment directly and wanted to add that statment only if it might work.

I have a 2511 TS linked into my CCNP lab and configured it with default gateway pointing to my ADSL router. The TS has a staic local IP in my LAN also I have port forwarding set up on my ADSL router to direct all Telnet (not cofigured for ssh yet) sessions to the TS.
The TS is linked to the ADSL router via the transceiver module ( CentreCom AT-210TS) which feeds the ADSL router with ethernet connection.I have tried to access the TS from a remote location but with no joy, fortunately I also have it consoled to my PC so I SSH to the PC and then run my terminal emulator from there. Using SSH to the PC and then minicom to the TS when doe this way (Remote Location>Ubuntu>minicom>TS) I can see the ethernet interface has no MAC address when i do a sh internet eth 0 mac is set to 0000.0000.0000.
I don't want to be connecting via ssh to PC before accessing the TS but instead just want to connect to the TS; for the life of me I still can't explain what's going on.

I have a E3000 with newest firmware that has a VOIP by Velcom. It's a Grand stream HT–286.My device is working perfectly with the router. Can call and recieve calls. the caller ID (Name and number that appears is accurate). The only problem is the caller ID's time and date are always wrong. When I unplug device, it goes back to Jan 1 and time 12:00am.Any call I then get is wrong.
In the router, I've enabled SIP ALG. And the firewall is only filtering ident (port 113) and Anonymous Internet requests. The device has a hard coded internal IP (192.168.123.110). and I reserve the IP using mac filtering. The device has an administration page that is unavailable to users as it's locked by a password. On this page has an NTP server setting that the device uses to get it's time/date.I see on the information page of the device that iot's registered to a sip server. The company is saying that it's a firewall issue. I'm not too sure how to proceed.

Environment: Internet (external IP say 24.x.x.x) ISP provided modem+router (192. 168. 1.x/ 24 IPTV network) E4200 (192.168.0.x/24 my home network).
The DDNS option page did report update succefully and shown the external IP address correctly on the page, however when I login to dynDNS it shows 192.168.1.x, which is the E4200 IP dhcp from the ISP's router.I know that it's double NAT, but the 192.168.1x/24 subnet is the IPTV subnet, and my old Dlink router did support and update the dynDNS entry properly.
