Use Modem And Wireless Together?
Nov 14, 2012
I live in a remote area. I can get up tp 3.5 Mbps on cable ( Charter, Voted #1 for speed by PC mag ) and 2.4 Mbps on wireless (Verizon) on a perfect day or the middle of the night. I just finished building a nice PC and hoped to do a lot of high speed "stuff"

My Motorola SBG901 Modem/Router combo has stopped connecting to the internet. I have done all the troubleshooting with Comcast and with Motorola and it is out of warranty, so I will have to purchase a new one.In the mean time, I wanted to use it only as a wireless router connected to my Scientific Atlanta DPC2100R2 modem. Is there anyway to do this? Is there a way to disable the modem in the SBG901? Simply connecting with the ethernet cords has not worked. I connected the DPC2100 to the SBG901 via ethernet cord. My computer was able to pick up a wireless connection but there is no cable connection.

i just bought a Netgear WNDR4000 router due to troubles with my current modem/router combo (D-Link DSL2730-B). The router doesnt have in built modem functionality obviously so I need to set up the modem/router as a dedicated modem. Also should I use the current modem/router as the dedicated modem or an older model i own (I think its a DSL 502T)? Because the current one often drops the internet connection. Don't know if its a problem with the modem functionality or something else. Will the older one serve better since i didn't have any problems with that one or will it be outdated? I only upgraded due it not having wireless capabilities. Otherwise it's fine.Or will I be even better off buying a dedicated modem? I really don't want to spend more money but if this is a far better alternative I guess i will.
EDIT: Ok so found out that I have to put the modem/router in bridge mode in order for this to be possible. However, looking up how to do this lead me to a dead end because i need to fill in some fields that i have no idea how to interpret.
VPI:
VCI: These 2 already came with presets. Should I just leave them?
Select DSL Link Type (EoA is for PPPoE, IPoE, and Bridge): Choices of EoA PPPoA and IPoA
Encapsulation Mode: Choices of LLC/SNAP-BRIDGING and VC/MUX
Service Category: UBR without PCR, UBR with PCR, CBR, Non Realtime VBR, Realtime VBR
[code]...

my computer randomly disconnects from my modem and will not reconnect until I restart my computer (do not need to restart modem). When I check the modem, it always is still running. The lights on the modem do the exact same thing whether the internet is working or not. The disconnection is entirely random. Sometimes it will disconnect immediately, sometimes it will take up to a few hours. I do not have a router hooked up to the modem, and the only other thing the modem is hooked up to is our tv. But even when the tv box is off, we still randomly disconnect.
On the previous forum thread that I read, some of the comments asked for the person to paste their entire ipconfig and their entire ping list from command prompt I will post that below: [code] Could it possibly be a virus? I am currently performing a virus scan using Microsoft Security Essentials. I will report the results of that tomorrow, seeing that it will take several (up to 10) hours to finish and it is nearly midnight of me posting this.I should also note that whenever I unplug my Ethernet cord it gives me a symbol that looks like this other than the regular disconnect with the red "X" over the wire symbol.

I'm switching to cable internet service instead of DSL. My Netgear router will not work with my cable modem; but it works like a charm with my DSL modem. Is it a problem with the router setup? Good thing I still have the DSL service.

I currently have a cable modem and it has only one ethernet port and I currently have 3 systems I need to connect. In addition, I would like to also be able to have a wireless router linked to the modem as well.Currently, I have a TP-Link 5 port Unmanaged Mini Desktop Switch with the ethernet cable going from my cable modem into it and from there, I have the other port slots feeding into my desktop pc, laptop, xbox and another then going back into my wireless router.
My problem is that to use the wireless router on any of the 3 systems I am using (PC, Laptop, Xbox) when I choose to go unwired, I have to restart the wireless router every time.Is there a way to just have them all connected and working without having to always having to restart the wireless router when I want to go wireless and having to restart the modem itself when I want to go wired?

I have a wireless modem. Its main connections are power, and phone line. Since its a wireless modem it is not connected to my PC through wire. i have a Data card USB which is plugged in my PC. The wireless modem senses this Data card and my internet was working normally. I live in New-Zealand and I was having a Telstra Clear connection with their modem and Data card. Since it was acquired by Telecom, the internet provider had given me this new wireless modem but the Data card remains the same. Now this new wireless modem is not connecting. But the laptops are getting connected through WiFi. Since my PC has no WiFi, it uses this data card. My PC is not getting connected to the internet. I tried plugging in the USB Data card in and out, updating the drivers and stuff.I want my PC to get connected to the internet.

I just moved into a new apartment where internet is included with rent and can be accessed via an ethernet port in the wall. I was told I could buy a wireless router and get wireless in my apartment, but my router (Belkin N300) is refusing to set up without a modem. Maybe the lack of modem isn't my problem, but I can't figure out anything else it could be.

I have a Sierra Wireless 306 3g Modem, connected with Bigpond. It is working when plugged directly into the computer via USB.I had it plugged into a Netcomm router, which was Ethernet cable connected to the destop and also our TIVO device.I was able to link o the internet wirelessly from my laptop - though not if someone was using the desktop at the same time. I suspect an IP address conflict was at fault here, though had no clue how to fix that.My actual problem is my Netcom router no longer works and I've had to purchase another. When I plug my router into the computer I get an error message saying there is another computer on this network with the IP address but I tried to change the IP address of the router, to no avail....I returned that router and got another and ended up with the same problem.

I can't get traditional broadband services, so I've been making due with Verizon's Mobile Broadband service. Problem is, it's expensive and has a 5GB cap per month. I read about powerline networking and thought it sounded good, so I bought all the adapters and a router. Problem is, I didn't have the prior knowledge to realize I also needed a modem as well. How or if I'd be able to set up any sort of modem in my home, considering services like Verizon can't reach me?

I have a tech coming out tuesday but if it's something i can troubleshoot and fix now i'd rather have that.

I've recently had to unplug my modem and wireless router every time I want to connect to the Internet. Charter suggested that the modem signal was weak, indicating the modem might be bad, so I replaced the modem. The problem persists and they think the modem and router connection is timing out. They want me to lease a modem/wireless router combination for $10 a month. I'd rather buy one.
