Jan 15, 2013I am living in an apartment complex with free wireless Internet and i turned this old pentium 4 computer into a web/media/file server. I want to be able to access my server away from home but i am extremely limited and i can not forward ports and I have no other kind of network privileges. I am a complete idiot when it comes to networking solutions and I am trying to learn. I have a very vague understanding of vpns and dynamic dns services but i do not understand what i need to access my server from a different network. I setup dns services for my home server but still have not been able to resolve hostnames to actual y point to my server or maybe my networks firewall is blocking me.

Mar 10, 2013I'm trying to make a setup on my Cisco 881 router, but I'm having some trouble.I've managed to configure logging in with a Public-Private key pair over SSH, but it's also still possible to log in over SSH with just a username and password. I'd like to prevent this, if possible. I imagine I might have manually configured this to be allowed at some point, but I can't quite figure out how I did this, as no matter what I've tried to remove, it keeps allowing this option. I still need to be able to log in with a username, because I want users to have different privileges.
Once I've logged in using the Public-Private key, I don't automatically go into privilege mode, even though the user is configured with a privilege level. I'd like to configure that users that I've configured to use a certain privilege mode, automatically go into privilege mode without a password prompt. I know it did this before I started using the Public-Private key (or before I used AAA, which was configured around the same time), so I wondered if it's possible to do this still.

I dont know the ip addresses for Cisco 500 switches which are configured as backbone which the ip address assigned on the network is static ip address. Specifically I want to get their configuations inorder to get their specified assigned vlans on the network. I know the ip addresses for their specified cisco 500 switches' gateways. I know that cisco 500 switches can be accesses through web. Is there other ways to solve the problem apart from going onsite and connect to the cisco 500 switches using network cable since cisco 500 swithes dont have console ports?

Jan 23, 2011I'm going to move offices into a shared situation with 3 companies. Each company will want its own private network so there's no snooping between companies. I am planning on using VOIP for the phone system (Nextiva cloud based). Is it possible to set up the system so that each company has access to the VOIP system but yet remains sequestered in the their own network for everything else. I was hoping to do this with one data port at each workstation using Cisco SPA-303 phones. The way I understand this, is that the phone plugs in to the data port and you daisy chain the workstation off from each phone. Is this possible to do this while having the system I described? Another wrinkle is that I'd also like all the networks to be access shared printers.

Mar 25, 2013How to setup 3 SG300-52 (in L2 mode) as per this diagram:Port 1 on all switches should be able to talk to each other and access the blob at the right.The ports 25 on the other hand should only be able to talk among themselves in their own private vlan. They are to carry sensitive traffic. So I created 3 vlans, vlan 78 for ports gi1, gi51 and vlan 10 for port25,49,50 and a dummy vlan: 666 with the intent of segratating vlan 10 from vlan 78. My attempts so far have failed. ports gi49-50 are configured as trunk ports and gi1,gi51 as access ports as the following cli output (excerpts of the startup config):
vlan database
vlan 10,78,666
exit
interface vlan 1
ip address 172.16.10.11 255.255.255.0

Ports gi1 can talk to each other and access the blob but ports 25 refuse to talk to each other. But as soon as I remove the access links to the blob they can! Obviously, at that point port gi1 lose access.Is such a topology feasable or even advisable?

Is this possible?For some context, heres what I am trying to do: I have a microchip (Arduino) which is connected to a laptop, which is not in range of the wireless network, but its connected to a 4g mobile network. Mar 7, 2012I am looking into the possibility of using private vlan's for some dmz implementations however I do have what may be some very rudimentary questions. It seems straightforward how to configure the primary/secondary vlan configuration as well as associating them. However in my case I would be looking to configure the PVLAN on a 6500-vss platform acting as the router while all of the hosts which I would desire to have in the isolated vlan would be spread out across a number of older Cisco switches which only support "protected port" setup or Procurve switches all of which I do not have budget to replace with something newer. So in my scenario I would have a 6500 connected by trunk to multiple switches which only support a protected port setup such as a Procurve (top of rack) or a Cisco 2950. As the Procurve or 2950 would not support Private VLAN setup, do I then just configure the secondary vlan to be allowed across the trunk from the 6500, configure that vlan on the Procurve or 2950 (as vtp will not foward the info for the secondary vlan) and assign that vlan to the host port as well as setting it as a protected port and this will communicate just fine across the trunk to the router as well as stopping the protected port in top of rack switch 1 from being able to communicate to a protected port in top of rack 2,3,etc? If the above scenario is what needs to be done, do I just use a regular trunk or do I have to use a PVLAN trunk?

Jan 12, 2011My work has a main office and a backup office which is off site. What I am trying to do is copy a folder from one computer at the backup site to another computer at the backup site, all while sitting at my computer in the main office. Let's say the two computers at the backup site are called comp1 and comp2.Whether I use Windows Explorer, or .net VB script, or XCOPY from the command prompt, if I try to copy \comp1c_drivefolder to \comp2c_drivefolder from my computer then it takes an extremely long time - around 5 hours for 2Gb of data.
However, if I Remote Desktop into comp1, and from that machine copy C:folder to \comp2c_drivefolder then it only takes 5 minutesI can only assume that when I try to copy the folder from my computer remotely that it is transferring the data from comp1 -> my computer -> comp2, and with the computers being at different sites it's very slow. What I need to know is if I can do this remote copy using VB without the data going via my computer, i.e. straight from \comp1 to \comp2.
I thought this was the way Windows handled copying between networks anyway, i.e. straight from one to the other, my only explanation for the terrible speed is that it is going via my computer. I'm writing a basic folder-backup program in VB and would REALLY like to cut that 5 hour transfer time down to the 5 minutes I know the network can do

Apr 10, 2012I configured a new SG-200-08 with a static IP. I tried to save the configuration as the startup configuration. After 10 minutes, I restarted the switch. It didn't boot with the new configuration, and returned to the default .254 and default pw. Now I cannnot assign a new pw or get past the change the pw page. When I try to save a new pw, the switch reboots and prompts me to change from the default pw. I tried resetting the switch by depressing the reset button for a long time, but results are the same. LED indicators are green with a flashing green indicating the .254 address and a solid green on the port where the switch is connected to the computer. How can I reset the switch or get passed the change your pw page?

Jan 4, 2012We just upgraded our Sg300 series switches to the new IOS so we can get CLI access. The upgrade went fine but it seems we have two login prompts, the first being completely unnecessary as you can just hit return to get by it. IE here is the progression:
1. Connect SSH
2. Receive a "login:" prompt. Anything can be entered here, including just return
3. Login banner is displayed
4. Username Prompt is then displayed. Valid username required
5. Password Prompt displayed - Valid password required
6. Now at CLI 1. Connect SSH
I am trying to get rid of that first login prompt (IE Step 2) as it is causing issues with our configuration software. I have tried every line and authentication command I can think of, the only thing that gets rid of it is using none authentication which obviously we can't stay with. how did you get around it?

The strange part is that it happened for both switches at the same time.But now when i try to login, it gives me a message "password required, but none set". I can login to them via console.Is it because the 0 - 4 VTY connection are being used and there is no password set from VTY 5 to 15?The config has not changed.

Jun 8, 2011The switch functions and operates fine but I can no longer login to the webview(GUI) and when I use a serial cable to console in to it, it shows nothing on the hyperterminal meaning no login. How can I get back into the switch to manage it or reset it back to factory settings? I kept the default IP address and I enabled HTTPS to login by gui, well I got in by HTTPS so I went in to turn that setting off and hit apply and now I can't log into it at all.

Oct 11, 2011I have two Win XP machines. One is connected to the LAN and the other is a standalone. I have installed an additional network card on the machine connected to the LAN. That machine is linked to the standalone through a switch using the 162.198.1.xxx sequence of IPs, with 255.255.255.0 as the subnet mask and no DNSWINS, or anything else. I can ping either machine from the other through the private network, but cannot see the files. I need to pull certain files from the standalone, but have not been able to even see them.
